Maryland MMA Fighters Wanted For IBL Team

Maryland’s only MMA competitive team, The Baltimore Renegades has scheduled a pre-season fight on August 23rd in clear water Virginia against an all star team of “Fighting Chance” and “Busted Knuckles” of Virginia.

We still need fighters in a lot of our weight classes. You need to join our school to be on our team. If you think you got what it takes hit me up. Serious inquires only, if you are a keyboard warrior don’t waste my time. Our first fight is August 23rd, I am looking to fill the slots ASAP.

At most gyms and dojos women fighting MMA is kinda frowned upon. We are looking to break some ground and potentially have a womens mma team. If you are female, want to fight and live in Maryland, look me up.

Bertos Fighting Family Make History at RFC XIII

Fight History was made in Tampa, FL as the First Family of Fighting Champions, the Bertos from Winter Haven, FL added yet another fighter to their family legacy…..

Revelina “Nana” Berto won her Pro MMA debut at Real Fighting Championships’ (RFC) XIII “Title Bound” at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, FL on Friday, July 11th.

Nana is the daughter of legendary Trainer and former fighter, Dieuseul “Tiger” Berto and sister to Undefeated WBC Welterweight Boxing Champion Andre Berto (22-0, 18 KOs), RFC MMA Lightweight Champion Edson “Little Tiger” Berto, and Cleveland Berto, the former Florida Wrestling Champion.

Andre and Edson also made Fight History last year becoming the first brother team to ever have their fights televised nationally on the same night – Andre in New York On HBO Boxing and an hour later Edson on Showtime fighting for EliteXC in California.

RFC Matchmaker Joe Valdez paired Nana against Jessica Bednark, an IFL Kickboxing veteran. Nana’s victory came via squeezing the air out of her opponent like a giant anaconda. Submission via front choke is the “official” term from the Battlebase network coming at 2:36 in the first round.

Of course the whole Berto clan ringside and Tiger’s World of Martial Arts’ J. Lee and students who were there to support Nana went berserk along with the entire partisan sold out crowd.

And as usual at an RFC Event the audience was packed with sports celebrities such as Shaquille O’Neal (there to support his Gracie Orlando Team); WEC bantamweight champion, Miguel Torres; Kickboxing Legend Olando Rivera; Pro Boxer (and now movie star). Jeff Lacy; UFC TUF’s Matt Arroyo, RFC, IFL veteran Chris Baten, Carlos “Rooster” Gonzalez; and of course Fight Zone’s own Jay Adams and Nancy Evans.

Proud papa Dieuseul Berto was seen smiling from ear to ear the rest of the night.

Congratulations to Nana and also Andre who now holds the belt vacated by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and to the entire Berto family on their hard work and contribution to the sport.

Tiger’s World of Martial Arts, located in Winter Haven, FL, is the home of the World famous “Family of Fighting Champions,” the “Berto’s.”

Father Dieuseul “Tiger” Berto, is a former “Pride” fighter and “Pride” Judge, who trains at his “Tiger’s World” facility with his sons, James “Edson” Berto, the very first RFC MMA Lightweight Title Belt holder, Undefeated Pro Boxer and former 2004 Olympian Boxer Andre Berto, and Cleveland Berto, the State Wrestling Champion of Florida, who also managed to place second as National Wrestling Champion.

Just one Champion in a family would be something, but to have so many, is almost unheard of today.

So to what does this Family of Fighting Champions attribute their great achievements? Believe it or not, an accident…some would call it a tragedy…or was it?

Father “Tiger” Dieuseul Berto was well known as a “Pride” fighter in Japan, Japan Ring Wars, and the UFC Battle of Atlanta, and did plenty of MMA/NHB until he almost died in a serious car wreck about seven years ago. He was in a coma for several months, and not expected to live, even to the point that the Doctors had his wife make his funeral arrangements for him. Now, that’s as close to death as you can get.

But, what the Doctors didn’t know is that this is one tough hombre. Tiger may have lost a round, but he wasn’t out of this fight, not just yet. And, fight he did! Not only to stay alive, but to live his life with his family!

Then, when Berto came out of his coma, they said he wouldn’t walk or talk again. That’s when Berto did what he did best. He fought-once more-to prove the Doctors wrong, and, he fought through the excruciating pain that came with each and every step he took as he learned how to walk, talk, and feed himself again. Things once taken for granted were now daily triumphs.

Berto told me that this accident was the best thing that happened to him, and he made “lemonade” out of lemons. He said that this was a “mental” fight for him, and he now had a focus and a goal, and realized he could do anything.

Seeing his children grow up and “make it to the top” was the inspiration that kept him going, and they have indeed been successful!

Berto said “he no longer wastes time on ‘useless things’ that don’t matter.” He works harder, and feels he’s a better husband, father, teacher and trainer, and that the positive change in him has also changed others.

Tiger also said “that before the accident his family always went to Church, but that since the accident, they all realize that God has a plan for them. God comes first in whatever they do.” He credits his wife with being the driving force of faith in their home, and he and his sons do ministry at their Church and counsel other kids as well.

James “Edson” Berto, the eldest son, and his dad both have the same goal. To see him become a Champion in the next couple of years. Edson told us last year to keep your eye on him, and since them, he has won the RFC (Real Fighting Championships) Lightweight Title Belt at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fl and several EliteXC nationally televised fights.

Edson is such an athlete, and so talented, that he was also at one time a Professional soccer player for several years while living in Haiti. Like father, like son. Dad Dieuseul also used to play professional soccer.

Edson has about 6 years of Karate training, and prefers the Muay Thai style of stand up fighting, but, I can assure you, his ground work is just fine, and his fans have seen him win both standing up and down on the ground, no problema.

If he is standing, watch out for his devastating leg kicks to his opponents-he chops them down to the mat like he’s wielding an ax!

Edson trains extremely hard, six days a week, with his dad, Berto, and his boxing brother Andre, doing MMA, boxing, sprints, plenty of stretching exercises, and just to round things out, some weightlifting. He has also been training with Ross Kellin and Ralph Garcia of Team High Performance/World Class Martial Arts.

In the MMA world, I have never seen such a close bond, even between teams who will fight each other. They will train together, and even cover each others corners if needed. It’s remarkable. (But once they are in the ring or the cage, it’s a different story-it’s all business.)

When Edson’s not fighting, he likes to watch both the MMA fights or boxing, or be at Church with his family.

In addition, dad Dieuseul Berto has always wanted to have a Doctor in the family, and he would like to see Edson become the family “Doc” besides being a “MMA Champion.” I’d say that Edson has been working especially hard for the past year, and his results has been astounding, to say the least. Just give him a few more years and this young man will be off the charts!

His middle son, Cleveland, the State of Florida Wrestling Champion, is attending Cinematography school on a full scholarship at the University of San Francisco in California. He is pursuing an acting career, and has aspirations to become a producer or a director in the future, especially of fight movies. With his family’s talent and good looks, he has a built in cast, including himself!

When Cleveland is on break from school, however, he joins right in with his two brothers Edson and Andre and the Tiger’s MMA Team, and you can find him at the weigh-in’s, backstage with the fighters, and then ringside lending support or being a “cornerman,” he’s right there in the thick of things.

Youngest fight son Andre, is the former 2004 Olympian Boxer who saw his dream come true with teammates such as Rock Allen and Andre Ward. He didn’t medal, but boxing is his heart’s love, and since turning Pro back in December of 2004, he remains undefeated, and has amassed a record of 16-0 with14 of those wins via KO’s.

Andre has fought on “Big Cards” such as the Tarver/Jones III card at the St. Pete Times Forum, in Tampa, and his fight in December 07 in the Welterweight division vs. Miguel Figueroa on the Jermain Taylor/Kassim Ouma card. Miguel was the more experienced fighter, with a record of 24-6-2, and 14 KO’s, but Andre chalked up yet another win with a TKO in the 6th round.

He not only wants to be a Champion, he wants to be a role model inside and outside the ring. Since he’s been one of the top amateurs in the world, he has fought in World Championships in front of crowds as large as 40-50 thousand in attendance. He “wants to impress every time he steps into the ring,” and with the KO’s he’s racking up, he’s doing a great job!

Editors Update – Only four years and 22 fights into his professional career, Andre Berto is on top of the WBC’s welterweight division as he recently stopped Miguel (Mikki) Rodriguez in the seventh round to capture the WBC welterweight title and belt vacated by Floyd Mayweather Jr’s retirement.

Both sons, Andre and Edson, say that their father’s fight to recover from that near fatal car accident has been the main inspiration in their lives, and has left an unforgettable impression on both of them.

Andre refers to his dad as “Pop,” and said he has no excuses for anything because of the adversities his father overcame. He said his dad works “crazy hard” every day, and that he’s “an animal,” as well as being Andre’s conditioning and every thing else coach. (Tony Morgan in Winter Haven is Andre’s boxing coach.)

Dad Berto wants the fans to know that they are a “competitive family,” and he considers every one of his children “Champions,” and wants to be remembered as a “Family of Champions” that never quit, no matter what the obstacle, they will make it to the finish line. Not only in fighting, but in life itself.

Berto says “Life is a combat.” “There is an opportunity in every obstacle and we need to learn to find it.” He said he can see it from what happened to him.

“If there isn’t an obstacle to your goal, it’s not a goal.” “If it’s too easy, then you won’t have any feeling of accomplishment.”

Some really great words and advise from a great man who still battles daily with the pain he endures from his old injuries, without a complaint, instead living each day with a gusto some of us will never know in a lifetime of living.

Now, you would think that his Champion sons and Tiger’s World MMA school was enough to keep Dieuseul occupied, but, if you thought that, you’d be wrong.

Dieuseul Berto also plays host to “Submission” Grappling Tournaments several times a year in Winter Haven with the top men, women, and children’s grappling division athletes in attendance.

These are the best local grapplers in the state, as you would expect from a tournament by Berto, but, he has also managed to get some of the finest grapplers in the nation as well as from around the world to participate in his events!

I have learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to great Champions, and Dieuseul Berto and his Family of Champions go well beyond our wildest expectations! I can’t wait to see what happens in the future!

10:40 Ryan Kocer- Ryan was a defending three time state wrestling champion from Wagner, S.D. and ESPY Nominee- best male athlete with a disability).Ryan lost his leg (below the knee) in a tragic accident during football season and literally only had a few months to get mentally, emotionally and physically prepared to wrestle. Prior to the accident was the favorite to win it all in his senior year. With his family and faith providing him with strength and support, Ryan was determined to return to the mat. Obviously he knew the moves, the problem, his balance and new style of attack/defense. Amazingly, Ryan qualified for the state championships and eventually gutted out a 4th place finish. Tony Marinozzi contacted me about this tremendous young man and I knew I had to have him on the show to share his inspirational story.

Apparently just minutes ago, guns were drawn on Quinton “Rampage” Jackson after being chased down by police. Quinton allegedly was involved in a car accident in Newport Beach and left the scene. The cops chased him down and it ended with Quinton laying face down with guns drawn. He has been charged with felony hit and run and felony evading arrest. Talk about a bad couple of weeks for the former champ…geez. He lost his UFC Light Heavyweight Title last week to Forrest Griffin and now this. Our thoughts are with Quinton and his family during this time. Hopefully it will all turn out to be some big misunderstanding.

Fire and Ice! The whirlwind, all-action style of Aaron Pryor against the icy calm, seemingly unstoppable Julio Cesar Chavez. Two warriors who in their primes did not know the meaning of defeat. Who would win the showdown between “The Lion of Culiacan” and “The Hawk of Cincinnati”? Would Pryor’s fire melt Chavez’s ice? Or would Chavez be the one to extinguish Pryor’s flame?

STYLE

Chavez:

Chavez was the master of breaking an opponent’s body and spirit in a seemingly effortless manner. Boxed from a conventional stance, with a high guard, Chavez would systematically win the war of attrition, creating openings and unleashing a calculating offensive arsenal of straight rights and hooks to the head, along with a punishing left hook to the body.

Pryor:

Pryor was a whirlwind with gloves on, moving forward and churning punches from all angles, smothering opponents and forcing them to wilt. Boxing from a conventional stance, Pryor was the aggressor, firing long right hands from the outside and hooks and uppercuts on the inside. Often intimidated opponents with his relentless attack.

STRENGTHS

Chavez:

1) Body Attack – Like many Mexican legends before him, Chavez took pride in wilting his opponents with a two-fisted body attack. The right hand, either to the ribs or under the heart, was effective, but his bread and butter was the left hook, which he fired to his opponent’s liver with paralyzing effects.
2) Chin – Chavez fought some very impressive punchers of the era, including Roger Mayweather and Edwin Rosario. He walked through the best punches any opponent could offer which was attributed to the abnormally thick skull he possessed.
3) Stamina – Chavez came into his fights in excellent condition and would get stronger during the course of the bout. He was a tremendous finisher, even in the later stages of the bout.

Pryor:
1) Aggression– Once the bell rang; Pryor only knew one direction and one speed: forward and full-throttle. Pryor would charge head-first, throwing punches, and setting a breath-taking pace that would overwhelm his opponents.
2) Unorthodox – Pryor threw so many punches from so many different angles, I don’t think he even knew where the next one was coming from, which made him very difficult to defend against.
3) Chin – Coming straight forward, often with his hands at his side, Pryor took his fair share of punches. But he had a very good chin that allowed him to stand up to the bombs that he faced.

WEAKNESSES

Chavez:
1) Speed – Chavez was technically sound but he did not carry great speed in his hands or feet. Faster boxers would sometimes trouble him and he would need to slow them down by weakening them with body punches.
2) Easy Target – For Chavez, the best defense was a good offense, and there would be occasions when opponents found him easy to hit. But while easy to hit, he was difficult to hurt, and nearly impossible to stop.

Pryor:
1) Balance – Pryor found himself on the canvas several times, but it was rarely a case of his chin failing but, but his balance instead. Punching off the wrong foot and sometimes square, Pryor would sometimes almost fall down without getting hit.
2) Lifestyle – Pryor lived as fast and as furious as he fought with escapades of substance-abuse being legendary.

CHAVEZ:

1) ** Greg Haugen (2/20/93) – In front of a crowd over 132,000 in Mexico City’s Eastadio Azteca, Chavez made Haugen pay for his pre-fight remarks, by brutally pummeling him over five one-sided rounds. Haugen had remarked that Chavez’s legendary record was built against a lot of “Tijuana Taxi Drivers” but on this night, he found out how devastating an enraged Chavez could be.
2) Meldrick Taylor (3-17-90) – While many feel that Taylor was robbed when the fight was stopped with two seconds remaining and with him ahead on the cards, the punishment that Chavez dished out is undeniable. Taylor was fast and flashy, landing combinations and outworking Chavez, who kept steadily applying pressure. With Chavez trailing on two of the three cards, he finally cashed in against a swollen and bloody Taylor, dropping him with only seconds remaining and winning when Richard Steele made the controversial call to stop it.
3) Edwin Rosario (11-21-87) – Chavez outclassed hard-punching and highly-respected Rosario. He forced Rosario to fight off of the ropes and didn’t give him room to fire his heavy arsenal. Chavez punished Rosario down the stretch, landing an astonishing 61% of his punches throughout and swelling Rosario’s left eye shut, and forcing the corner to throw in the towel to save their fighter.

Pryor:

1) ** Alexis Arguello (11-12-82) – Arguello was a legend from Nicaragua, a champion boxer with explosive power. Pryor showed no fear in engaging Arguello in a slugfest which saw a total of 238 punches thrown in the opening round. Pryor was successfully able to walk through Arguello’s potent punches and gradually wear him down. Ahead on two of the three cards, Pryor came out furiously for the 14th round, some believing he was aided by the contents of a mysterious black bottle in his corner, and battered Arguello until the referee finally stopped the contest.
2) Akio Kameda (7-4-82) – Kameda was an undefeated Japanese southpaw who came into Pryor’s hometown of Cincinnati and found success early, dropping Pryor in the 1st round. From there, it was all Pryor as he swarmed Kameda with an all-out attack. Pryor floored a weary Kameda in the 4th, and twice more in the 6th, and keep attacking him until the bout was finally halted.
3) Antonio Cervantes (8-2-80) – Pryor’s title shot came in his 24th fight against 100-fight veteran Antonio Cervantes. Despite going down in round 1 and losing the first two rounds, Pryor would not be denied as he ramped up his offense, slicing Cervantes open in the 3rd round and annexing his title in the 4th.

QUESTIONS

Chavez:
1) Can Chavez keep Pryor from smothering him?
2) How will Chavez’s chin hold up to Pryor’s offensive output?
3) Can Chavez match Pryor’s speed and work rate?

Pryor:
1) Will Pryor wilt from Chavez’s body attack?
2) How will he survive an effective finisher like Chavez?
3) Can Pryor keep a blistering pace against the durable Chavez?

THE PREDICTION

With both fighters in the ring, awaiting instructions, the demeanors of each is evident as Chavez stands there in icy calm while Pryor bounces like a caged animal, ready to be unleashed.

At the opening bell, Pryor springs from his corner and takes the fight to the notoriously slow-starting Chavez, throwing punches from all different angles. While Chavez is able to slip or deflect most of them, it is clear that the opening round belongs to Pryor.

Chavez is looser in the 2nd round and he stands toe-to-toe with Pryor throwing one or two punches to combat Pryor’s volleys of five and six. Pryor keeps charging forward but Chavez is holding his ground and countering with short uppercuts on the inside and hooks to the head and body.

The first real moment of drama unfolds in the 3rd round and Chavez meets Pryor’s rush with a well-timed left hook that sends him backwards, followed by a right hand that deposits him on the canvas. Pryor is up at the count of five and he continues his kamikaze assault, but with more respect Chavez’s offense.

From rounds four through seven, it is Pryor who is getting the better of the action as his hand speed is making the difference, landing series of crisp and impressive punches to Chavez’s head, sending sweat flying and bringing the crowd to their feet. But Chavez is keeping a steady pace and countering with inside body shots that are gradually sapping Pryor’s strength.

Both fighters are showing signs of battle by the 8th round, with Chavez cut over the bridge of his nose and an abrasion under his left eye. Pryor is bleeding from the mouth and his right eye is starting to swell, courtesy of several crisp Chavez hooks. Throughout the 8th through 10th rounds, Chavez is starting to assert his command, keeping pace with Pryor and landing the more telling punches to both Pryor’s head and body.

Pryor tries to will himself back into the fight, dropping his hands to his sides as he jukes Chavez and fires lead right hands and uppercuts. Unlike other opponents, this tactic will not back Chavez up, who will hold his ground and take the opportunity to counter with short and precise punches inside of Pryor’s wild offense.

By the 13th round, Pryor is seemingly exhausted, with his right eye nearly swollen shut and is now less inclined to press the action. Chavez, stronger but also a bit arm weary, is patient in his attack and even pins Pryor in the corner at one point, landing several hard punches, and forcing Pryor to clinch as the round 14th ends.
After they touch gloves to start the 15th and final round, Pryor comes out with one more offensive blast, throwing wild punches from an assortment of angles. Chavez lands a right hand to stymie Pryor’s attack and they clinch again. As the final seconds tick down, both Chavez and Pryor are letting it all hang out, and a furious exchange punctuates the final seconds. At the bell, both fighters raise their arms in triumph, as Chavez’s handlers parade him around the ring.

The three judges turn in their score cards and the verdict is unanimous for Chavez by scores of 145-140, 144-140, and 145-139.

Your winner by Unanimous Decision is Julio Cesar Chavez

For the next installment of Fantasy Dream Fights, it will be a battle of the big men as George Foreman squares off against Lennox Lewis. This matchup will be available on July 28.

CUNNINGHAM GIVES AN UPDATE ON NEW VENTURES ON HIS 32ND BIRTHDAY

PHILADELPHIA (July 15, 2008)—Today on July 15th, IBF cruiserweight champion, Steve “USS” Cunningham is celebrating his 32nd birthday by doing what he does everyday and that’s train hard to prepare for his next title defense.

“I want thank God in Jesus name for another year of health for me and my family” said Cunningham who sports a record of 21-1 with eleven knockouts.

“I feel like I am getting better each day and I am excited to get back in the ring.”

Heavyweight Scott Belshaw Added To Williams vs. McDermott Bill

Danny Williams, current British heavyweight champion and the most likely Briton to win a heavyweight world title since Lennox Lewis, gets into the ring on Friday, July 18 to defend his prestigious Lonsdale belt against Essex man John McDermott at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, England.

Williams, 39-6 (31), is the favorite of the bookies and knows that a good performance could see him sharing the ring with WBC champion Samuel Peter before the end of this year, but William’s likable opponent, John McDermott, 25-3 (16), has something to say about this.

“People are writing me off, saying I am just here to make up the numbers,” said McDermott. “But this is my opportunity to prove that I can fight and I do have the heart, determination and skill to go to a new level. I’ve worked hard and sparred many rounds for this fight.

“Although I respect Danny Williams, I’m in the ring to beat him. If I have to outbox him, I will. If I have to outpunch him, I’ll do that too. July 18 will be my moment of truth.”

Also on the bill will be young Belfast heavyweight, 6 foot 7 inch tall Scott Belshaw. The 23 year old has relocated to Chislehurst and changed his entire training team since losing to Daniel Peret, 13-16 (4), this past March but will get the opportunity to avenge that defeat when he meets Peret in Dagenham on July 18.

Belshaw, 8-1 (7), spent 10 days in a Portuguese training camp, employing new conditioning coach Carl Kemp, who is working alongside Belshaw’s new boxing trainer, Brian Lawrence.

Lawrence has told promoter Frank Maloney not to expect too much at the moment but in the next two or three years, Belshaw can become a threat in the heavyweight division.

“People forget what Brian Lawrence has done,” said Maloney. “But he’s worked with former European super middleweight champion James Cook MBE, former WBO heavyweight champion Henry Akinwande, current British bantamweight champ and man of the moment, Ian Napa, not to mention the revitalized Anthony Small.

“Lawrence is probably one of the best trainers to emerge in Britain over the last few years and has never been given the credit he deserves; but I’ll make sure that he does if he can turn Belshaw into a champion.”
