Malignaggi Update: Cast off, rehabilitation begins, ready for Hatton in the Fall

NEW YORK CITY (July 7, 2008) – IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs) had a cast removed from his right hand last Tuesday and he has started rehabilitation.

Malignaggi underwent hand surgery May 28 to repair a fractured metacarpal bone of the middle finger on his right hand, suffered during his title-defense win by 12-round decision against Lovemore N’dou.

“I feel good about the whole situation,” Malignaggi said yesterday from his Brooklyn home. “Getting the cast off was the first step, now rehabilitation starts. There’s no pain or swelling of the hand. I’m moving forward, thanks to Dr. Margles, who has saved my career several times. I’m looking ahead to a big showdown in the fall. I’ll be ready to rock ‘n roll against Ricky Hatton.”

Renowned boxing hand specialist, Dr. Steven Margles, operated on Paulie at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. He has also repaired the hands of former world champions Vinny Paz, “Irish” Micky Ward and Harry Simon, to name a few of his more notable boxing patients.

“I removed his cast and took x-rays,” Dr. Margles explained. “There was no pain and the fracture is healing like magic. Right now, he’s on or ahead of schedule.”

JOHNNY LIRA NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

United States Lightweight Boxing Champion Johnny Lira is in one of the toughest fights of his life. For the past few months, unbeknownst to many other than a few family members Johnny has been a regular patient at the Walter Payton Liver Center at Chicago’s UIC.

As you know, Johnny devoted years to trying to secure a retirement and pension plan for former boxers. Through all of his efforts and connections, the plan has yet to be put in place. A fact well known and very disappointing to the people in the know… now Johnny needs more than a good cut man in his corner. He needs us, all of his friends and other members in the boxing community to give him our support.

Johnny never asked much for himself in his quest for helping his fellow boxers and political friends in their journey to becoming future champions or winners of various elective offices. In this pursuit Johnny always portrayed a man on the go and a man of vision.

On Saturday, July 19th, 2008 the Degerberg Academy is hosting a benefit for Chicago’s former Golden Gloves, AAU, CYO, and United States Lightweight Boxing Champion Johnny Lira The event is endorsed by his immediate family and is scheduled to be held at the Degerberg Academy of Martial Arts.

Heavyweight John McDermott Primed For British Title Challenge

English heavyweight champion John McDermott says the talk of Danny Williams getting a title shot against world champion Samuel Peter later this year is disrespectful.

McDermott is slated to challenge British champion Williams on Friday, July 18 at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, England, and is furious at being considered a formality to be disposed of.

“If people are thinking that I am just turning up, they’re wrong,” said McDermott. “I want the opportunity to fight for a legitimate world title, so I’ve been preparing for this for a long time and I also want to banish memories of my British title fight against Matt Skelton a few years ago.”

McDermott, 25-3 (16), knows that this is a golden opportunity to gatecrash the world ratings and has left nothing undone in his quest to defeat Williams, 39-6 (31). “I’ve sparred over 130 rounds and I am physically and mentally ready for this crack at the British heavyweight title,” said the 28 year old Essex man.

The bill at the Goresbrook on July 18 also sees Commonwealth light welter champion Ajose Olusegun, 23-0 (12), making an appearance. The Nigerian born, London based southpaw is ranked #4 by the WBC and promoter Frank Maloney has made an offer for Olusegun to face WBC champion Timothy Bradley, but so far there has been no response from the Bradley camp.

The undercard features former British bantamweight champion Martin Power, 19-3 (8), who is on the hunt for his former title. Power knows that should he win his bout on the 18th, he will get a chance to challenge Commonwealth title holder Jason Booth.

Also scheduled to appear is the 5 foot 10 inch tall bantamweight version of Tommy Hearns, the world ranked South African sensation, Tshifhiwa Munyai, 16-0-1 (8), as well as fast-handed London featherweight Akaash Bhatia, 11-0 (2), big punching Belfast heavyweight Scott Belshaw, 8-1 (7), and Kent welterweight Scott Woolford, 7-1 (1).

Nadeem Siddique aims to prove he is one of Britain’s top lightweight contenders with an emphatic win over Steve Saville on Friday, 11th July 2008.

Unbeaten star Siddique’s eight round contest is chief support to the vacant British Lightweight Title battle between Manchester duo Lee Meager and John Murray at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan on a Hennessy Sports show in association with GoldenPalace.net.

Ghana’s Alex Brew lasted just two rounds against Sid at the Nottingham Arena in May and was due to meet Canadian Julius Odion last month before the bout had to be postponed.

The Bradford boxer will now box Saville (Walsall), who made a successful comeback last month after six years out.

After campaigning at welterweight earlier in his career, Siddique is now aiming to face the likes of the winner of Murray-Meager.

“Steve will be fired up after making a good comeback but I intend to look good in this one like I did in my last fight,” said Nadeem, who is unbeaten in 22 fights.

“It was difficult having the fight with the Canadian kid canceled, but that’s boxing and I can’t wait for my chance against Saville.

“I want to put on a good display for the Sky Sports cameras and it’s a chance for me to show people that I’m getting closer to title contention. A British title fight could happen soon.

“People had better start to spell my name right because I’m going to be making a name for myself in the next year. It’s only a matter of time before I prove myself.”

Also in action on the Wigan bill is two-time British title challenger Brian Magee, who will be aiming to win his third fight in a row on the comeback trail.

The Belfast boxer was held to a draw in a challenge for Tony Oakey’s British light-heavyweight title in Dublin a year ago but has since out-pointed Tyrone Wright and Mark Nilsen since drawing with Oakey.

Manchester light-welterweight Darren Askew looks for his fifth win since making his professional debut in October 2007. Southpaw Darren, 23, bounced back from his first loss his last fight with a six round win over Kristian Laight.

Walsall light-welterweight Martin Gethin hopes to keep his unbeaten record intact against John Baguley (Rotherham) over six rounds while Blackburn welterweight Ali Shah has his second pro fight and welterweight Khurram ‘Iceman’ Hussain (Bradford/Sheffield) hopes to improve his record of 6-1-1.

“Affliction Banned” Announces All-Star Broadcast Team

SIGNAL HILL, California (July 7, 2008) – “Affliction Banned,” the greatest MMA show of all-time, will feature an all-star broadcast team for its July 19th pay-per-view event, featuring the WAMMA heavyweight championship fight between the most lethal MMA heavyweight of all-time, Russian M1 superstar legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (27-1), and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (24-4), live from Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Veteran television sports reporter and announcer, Jay Glazer, will handle blow-by-blow action while MMA fighter Frank Trigg serves as color analyst.
