Sakikabara-san Laughs Last

Posted on | June 9, 2008 | No Comments

In March of last year the UFC attained its ultimate victory over longtime MMA nemesis PRIDE when Zuffa owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta purchased the Japanese organization for 65 million US dollars. It was to signal a new era. Loyal fans of MMA and fans of the now defunct Japanese organization were promised Superbowl caliber fights between the best MMA practitioners on the planet. With mixed feelings, spectators salivated over the thought of Fedor Emelianenko fighting Tim Sylvia, of Minotauro Nogueira facing off against Randy Couture, and of Wanderlei Silva going blow for blow with Chuck Liddell. Zuffa, it seemed, would hold the MMA universe in the palm of its hand.

Since then, less than a year after the ultimate victory for the Ultimate Fighting Championships, substantiated rumors have begun to circulate that the Fertittas are looking to possibly sell the UFC brand. The Fertitta Brothers and Zuffa are locked in litigation with former PRIDE owners for failing to produce a PRIDE event as promised. PRIDE 35, complete with a diapered Takada and a familiar banshee-like announcer, appeared under the alias “Sengoku,” while PRIDE 36 came in as “Dream.” The network television premier of Mixed Martial Arts occurred on the Fertittas’ watch, but without their branding. An upstart clothing company called Affliction has a card upcoming which, unless a rash of injuries break out, will outstrip the talent of even the best UFC shows this year. And to make matters even worse for a hubristic and over-competitive Dana White, a line up of current UFC belt holders looks suspiciously similar the Blue Corner roster of PRIDE 25: Body Blow (except for BJ Penn, of course).

How could this happen? This certainly isn’t the vision Zuffa’s top Brass had for the future of their companies. Could UFC’s ultimate victory actually have shaken loose its own stranglehold of American MMA?

What didn’t occur to Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta at the time, probably because this can’t happen in a Parker Brothers game of monopoly, was that the foreign organization was actually helping to maintain Zuffa’s dominance in the US. Fighters who sported a large fan base and/or great talent but who weren’t signed by the UFC were mystically whisked away across the ocean to a far off land where they would be paid, shelved, and could never threaten to bolster a Stateside fight card or pay-per-view broadcast ever again. Even the American fans of MMA who chose to look elsewhere for their fight entertainment were left picking between King of the Cage type events and Pride. With this choice before them, most fans picked the Japanese based fight organization, leaving Zuffa firmly in control of Western MMA.

But with this outlet for talent gone for almost a year before Dream and Sengoku debuted, fans and fighters were forced to turn to other organizations. Organizations like the IFL, Elite XC, and Affliction. Rogue international talent, which might have been drawn to Japan during an earlier era, flooded the United States.

Elite XC found some much needed wind added to their sails in the form of Pride veterans Phil Baroni, Charles “Crazy Horse” Bennett, Renzo Gracie, Murilo Ninja, Alistair Overeem and many others. PRIDE prospect KJ Noons and a PRIDE deified Nick Diaz also joined their ranks. On the Affliction card Fedor Emelianenko, Aleksander Emelianenko and Josh Barnett add their personalities to the broadcast. With them is Pedro Rizzo, a UFC fighter who had been contracted by PRIDE and might have otherwise been fighting in Japan. So too might have Andre Arlovski signed with Pride in days gone by. For these fighters, Sengoku and Dream simply do not cut it. Without PRIDE, they will fight in America.

MMA is on the rise in the world, and undoubtedly a host of new and talented fighters would have eventually put an end to Zuffa’s domination… but with Pride gone, that day will come sooner rather than later.

MONTELL GRIFFIN FIGHTS IN CHICAGO ON JUNE 20TH

Posted on | June 7, 2008 | No Comments

CHICAGO, IL (June 6, 2008) “Nine years is a long time to be fighting out of town, I’m thrilled to be fighting at home on June 20th” said former world champion Montell “ICE” Griffin after a training session in his native Chicago .

‘I’ve been on the road for while and it’s nice that my kids and family can come see me fight in Chicago ,” continued Griffin who was tutored by the legendary Eddie Futch.

Griffin, 48-7 with 30 knockouts over his illustrious 15 year career, will battle Baltimore native Corey Cummings, 16-2 (12KO’s) in a ten round light heavyweight bout at FEARLESS, an evening of world class professional boxing presented by Dominic Pesoli’s Productions, 8 Count Productions, HOME OF THE BEST IN CHICAGO BOXING, on Friday, June 20th at the Aragon Ballroom.

Tickets for FEARLESS are on sale now through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster) and the 8 Count Production offices at 312-226-5800. The Aragon Ballroom is located at 1106 W. Lawrence Ave. Doors for this event will open at 5:30pm with the first bell at 6:30pm.

About the current status of his career, Griffin was candid, “I know the deal at this point. I want to get to 50 wins and another shot at the world title. I’m training for Cummings like I would for a world title fight, there is absolutely no way I’m going into this fight at anything less than 100%. Hopefully a win here puts me in line for a bigger fight”, said the 1992 US Olympian.

In regards to the some of his biggest battles of his career including the DQ win over Roy Jones Jr., the wins over James Toney and controversial Rico Hoye decision loss Griffin said, “I never got the credit for the win over Roy because he got DQ’ed. The scores were close at the time of the stoppage and I believe I would have won if the fight had gone 12.

When I fought Toney in 1995 he was coming off the loss to Roy Jones. I beat him and folks said it was a fluke, so I beat him again the following year.

Against Rico Hoye everyone who watched that fight on Showtime saw what happened. It was a waste of time having to fight him and then not get the title shot against Clinton Woods.”

Said promoter Dominic Pesoli about Griffin , ‘I’m proud to have him on our card on June 20th. He’s been a great fighter for many years and Chicago fight fans are in for a real treat in seeing him fight.”

Headlining FEARLESS is an outstanding bantamweight clash as world ranked Alex Valdez, 20-2-1 (15KO’s), of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico battles Accra, Ghana native Anyetei Laryea, 17-4 (8KO’s) over ten rounds. Valdez is currently ranked # 4 by the WBC, #7 by the WBO, # 10 by the IBF and # 15 by WBA.

In the co-main event, Salinas , California super bantamweight Alejandro Perez, 12-0-1 (7KO’s) squares off against Mexico City ’s Adolfo Landeros, 17-10-1 (8KO’s) in a scheduled eight rounder.

On the outstanding under card, Chicago favorite Ivan Popoca, 6-0-1 (5KO’s) will face Khristian Geraci, 3-2-1 (2KO’s) in a six round welterweight bout. Also on the undercard, Michigan native Frederico Flores Jr. 4-2 (2KO’s) faces Chicagoan Gustavo Palacios, 2-3 (1KO’s) over four rounds.

Rounding out the card is a four round junior lightweight battle between Chicago native Juan Bailon, 2-0 (1KO) and Mexico ’s Gerardo Alarcon, 0-1.

Along with Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions and Bob Arum’s Top Rank Incorporated, FEARLESS is presented by TCF Bank, Tecate Beer and AeroMexico , Mexico ’s premier airline travel headquarters. The SOLO BOXEO TECATE broadcast will be viewed in 42 US markets and 70 foreign countries.

MAYWEATHER BOWS OUT OF BOXING EARLY

Posted on | June 7, 2008 | No Comments

Dear Media:

It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport.

I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision.

I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn’t matter. I just can’t do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.

Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had.

It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life.

DANA WHITE HAS AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WILL “ROCK THE MMA WORLD!”

Posted on | June 7, 2008 | 1 Comment

by: Jack Bratcher

[mpinpage]

Ryan Hockensmith over at ESPN The Mag, has a great new interview with the president of the UFC, Dana White.

In the interview Dana says they are planning to make an announcement next week that will “rock the MMA world.” What in the world could it be? Any ideas? Usually, when Dana sees other MMA organizations getting alot of attention he will say something like this. I believe last time the “big announcement” was the Bud Light sponsorship. If it’s something that is really going to “rock the MMA world” I would venture to guess that it could be a new TV deal. If I were the president of a Television network such as FOX or NBC and I saw the numbers that the sub par performance of the Elite XC show on CBS did, I would be willing to do just about anything to get the major league of MMA, the UFC, on my network. The only other “world-rocking” news I can think of would be a major fight announcement such as a George St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva fight or even an Anderson Silva vs. Roy Jones Jr. boxing match. Something like that could also shake up the MMA world.

Dana talks about the upcoming fight with Matt Hughes and Thiago Alves which takes place this Saturday, June 7th at UFC 85 in London and can be viewed on pay-per-view here in the United States. He says, “Hughes is either going to take a step forward and say, ‘I’m still here and I’m not going anywhere.’ Or Alves will say, ‘No, I’m the guy now.’” Dana also adds that Hughes will most likely fight Matt Serra this fall.

Dana speaks about the Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick fight which is also on the UFC 85 card and says that if Davis wins he will be in the running for a title shot with George St. Pierre.

Dana states that he thinks a B.J. Penn vs. George St. Pierre fight has to happen. That’s very interesting and I think that very well could be the “world-rocking” news he is referring to when he says they will make a big announcement next week. Just a guess. It would definitely be a history-making fight because they are two of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world and B.J. is the lightweight world champ and GSP is the welterweight world champ. The difference in their weight class is fifteen pounds so most likely B.J. would move up in weight if that fight were to happen; something B.J. has done before and would have no problem doing in my opinion. The only thing some people worry about, and with good reason, is B.J. cardio at welterweight.

After talking about the B.J. vs. GSP possibility, Dana says that he doesn’t like these superfights between different weight classes. Rather, he says, he would rather the fighters stay at their own weight class and dominate. I really have to agree with Dana on that. Unless a fighter has a very personal reason for wanting to do so such as B.J. does in the case of George St. Pierre. GSP has a win over B.J. and B.J. would love to fight him again to make up for that and prove he is the better man. But as a general rule, I would much rather see champions stay at the weight class where they won the Title and leave their mark on history. That is the place they will leave a legacy and where people remember them. I think people in general people are more impressed with a champ who can defend their Title for years and years instead of a guy who is always jumping around weight classes here and there, winning some and losing some.

Well, in response to my previous notion that the “world-shattering” news could be a possible superfight with Anderson Silva vs. George St. Pierre, Dana White clearly says, “Don’t hold your breath on that one.” Another problem with these superfights between champions is often it’s between two guys in which you really don’t want either one to lose as is the case with B.J. and GSP. I really hate to see either of those guys lose and I would feel the same way if GSP and Anderson Silva fought.

Then Dana says something that makes me very happy. He says that UFC 88 will be in Atlanta and Chuck LIddell will be on that card. Are you kidding me? I was making plans to attend that event if indeed it was going to be in Atlanta like the rumors were saying and now the Iceman will be there….YES!

Then Dana lays out something that just may blow all my theories of what the big announcement could be in the water. He says, “There’s something no one else has heard. You have no idea some of the stuff that we have planned. I’m going to make an announcement next week that is going to blow people’s minds. That deal is done, but my employees don’t even know yet. I’m renting out a place next Thursday and I’m going to tell them. Then we’ll make the announcement later that day. It’s an indicator of where this business is going over the next five years.” What the hell does that mean? An indicator of where the business is going? The only thing I can think of is a MAINSTREAM TELEVISION DEAL involving the UFC.

Dana goes on to say that he was very disappointed ESPN did a fifteen minute piece on Kimbo Slice. Then White says, “I think the show that happened on CBS the other day was a complete embarrassment for CBS and for the sport of mixed-martial arts. Urijah Faber is 145 pounds. He’ll beat Kimbo Slice. Kimbo Slice sucks. He’s terrible. If I had a heavyweight The Ultimate Fighter show, I don’t think he’d win the show. And he’s headlining a show on CBS?” That’s funny stuff but probably true. Urijah Faber would beat Kimbo Slice. Dana says he thought the Elite XC show on CBS was so bad for the sport that it hurt the UFC. I don’t know about that. The jury is still out on that one for me personally.

When asked about the possibility of Urijah Faber moving up to 155 and coming into the UFC, something Urijah has stated he would like to do, White said he would prefer he stay at the WEC in 145 and become a superstar and that “he’s so talented at that weight and he doesn’t even have to cut to make it.” That is something I didn’t realize. I had no idea Urijah didn’t have to cut weight to fight at 145 lbs. That makes what he’s done at that level even more amazing.

Dana says the UFC roster is at about 180 fighters now as opposed to 250 which they were at. He says that as long as they have enough fighters to fight three times a year is what they want. Then Dana makes a statement that really surprises me. When pressed, Dana informs that more than 75 percent of the 180 fighters on the UFC roster make more than fifty-thousand dollars a year. If that is true, that is really huge and I think it’s great. I think it’s awesome if it’s true.

Finally, on a last note Dana says there’s still a chance we could see Randy Couture back in the UFC. He said the chances are “better than zero.” Personally, I would say the chances are about a .5 percent, but that’s just me. And that’s not a knock against the UFC, I just think Randy has his mind made up.

The UFC is doing some great things. They’ve already given us some of the best cards and fights in the history of the sport this year and we’re just at about the halfway mark. So what could this earth-shattering news be the UFC is about to unveil? Let’s brace ourselves for not only what the UFC is about to do but the whole world of MMA is about to become! Hope you’re on for the ride.

Battle of the Midlands

Posted on | June 7, 2008 | No Comments

Darren McDermott claims his British Middleweight Title showdown with Wayne Elcock on June 20th is the biggest all-Midlands clash for 28 years.

Dudley’s ‘Black Country Body Snatcher’ argues there has not been a bigger Midlands boxing derby since former world title challenger Pat Cowdell and Dave Needham faced each other in Wolverhampton for the British featherweight title in 1980.

Undefeated McDermott (14-0) is aiming to end Birmingham banger Wayne Elcock’s reign in his first defence on a Hennessy Sports show in association with GoldenPalace.net at the SkyDome Arena Coventry on Friday 20th June 2008.

The ‘Battle of the Midlands’ derby had to be delayed from April 25th due to Elcock falling ill with a severe chest infection and McDermott says he is now in even better shape for his first British title opportunity.

“There’s a lot of interest in this fight in the Midlands area and I reckon it’s the biggest all-Midlands fight since Cowdell versus Needham,” said gas engineer McDermott.

“It’s Black Country versus Birmingham and I’m going to have a lot of fans down in Coventry on the night. It should be an electric atmosphere that will help.

“Cowdell and Needham were awesome fighters, but this fight is great for Midlands boxing too.

“I’m a pro and the postponement didn’t really bother me. I was 100 per cent ready for it then, but I’m 120 per cent ready for it now.”
