SAY IT AIN’T SO, JOE: IS JOE ROGAN QUITTING THE UFC?

Posted on | April 15, 2008 | 9 Comments

By: Rich Bergeron

Will Joe Rogan (L) be replaced as Mike Goldberg’s Sidekick?

[mpinpage]

The official word on the street is that Joe Rogan will not be commentating for this weekend’s UFC 83 event in Montreal, leaving decorated UFC Veteran Kenny Florian to take over temporarily. However, chatter coming into the Fight News Unlimited offices point to more than just “unspecified previous obligations” preventing Rogan from lending his comic voice to the Pay-Per-View broadcast, and his absence may not be temporary.

Fight News Unlimited received information from a reliable source recently pointing to a possible Carlos Mencia-esque rift between Rogan and UFC President Dana White. No, Dana White’s not stealing Rogan’s jokes, but rumor has it that White recently mandated that there be absolutely no mention of Randy Couture’s name in any future UFC broadcasts. Rogan has been outspoken about Couture and the impact of Captain America’s departure on the UFC and the sport of MMA.

The comedian/commentator may have also gone way overboard in pissing the bald guy off with his latest ESPN Interview:

When it comes to Dallas Mavericks and HDNET Fights Owner Mark Cuban’s thoughts about Joe Rogan, it’s pretty clear he appreciates Joe’s candor. Fight News Unlimited contacted Cuban recently, and he gave the comedian/actor/commentator much respect.

“Joe Rogan is the real deal,” said Cuban. “He loves the sport and he has the balls to say what’s on his mind. That is what makes him great at his job.”

As for Rogan’s HDNet Fights future, Cuban neither confirmed or denied any intention on his part to pursue Rogan’s services. “Who knows what the future might hold,” was all Cuban would say about it.

According to a friend of Rogan we contacted, he’s doing a comedy show this weekend. The show has something to do with “April 20th, AKA 4:20” festivities. The majority of the Rogan fans and haters alike commenting on a Sherdog thread we started keep getting the idea that this buzz all started because Rogan won’t be commentating for UFC 83. Our attempts to contact Joe have so far yielded no confirmation or denial that Joe gave his notice to Dana White and will not be renewing his UFC contract.

A source close to White reported recently that the ornery, outspoken UFC president has been incensed over the Couture debacle. Mark Cuban’s recent victory in getting part of the dispute remanded to the Texas courts obviously couldn’t have helped alleviate White’s frustrations. There are also reports of layoffs at UFC headquarters, though they don’t appear to be at all related to the Couture case or Joe Rogan.

Though there have been many theories as to why the UFC’s talks with HBO broke down over the broadcasting deal that never got done, reports pointed to HBO requiring their own commentators in order to ratify the agreement. Dana White reportedly balked at the suggestion at first, but in the interest of getting something signed he later agreed. Somewhere down the line, between April and October of 2007, the whole deal fell apart. UFC officials also failed to get anything wrapped up with CBS, which instead signed with EliteXC.

Rogan’s willingness to speak his mind about controversial issues, his understanding and appreciation of the sport, and his name recognition would likely make him an easy fit for any other organization in the industry looking for an influx of star power. He did call Mark Cuban a “bad MoFo” on ESPN, so maybe there’s a possibility he could wind up at HDNet Fights somewhere down the line. Perhaps he’ll follow Tito Ortiz and go wherever “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” decides to call home after his next fight.

Though it’s not yet official by any means, Rogan’s retreat (even if it is only rumored) illustrates the serious issues looming for the UFC. I haven’t been able to verify what kind of contractual obligations Rogan might have to the UFC, but I don’t foresee a dispute anywhere near the level of “Couturegate” if Rogan does depart the league. However, if even a comedian can’t have a sense of humor about the situation, there could be big trouble ahead for the top dogs of the MMA circuit.

We’ve sent word to ESPN asking if they were asked by White to remove the video from their site’s players on a host of MMA sites: Like these ones??

Tony Penecale’s Ringside Report for Cotto/Gomez and Margarito/Cintron

Posted on | April 14, 2008 | No Comments

Atlantic City Boxing Results – 4/12/08

Cotto Punishes Gomez; Margarito Destroys Cintron;

By Tony Penecale (Ringside)

The welterweight division is boxing’s hottest right now. On Saturday Night, in front of a raucous crowd in Atlantic City, Miguel Cotto defended the WBA welterweight title by punishing former “Contender Series 1” star Alfonso Gomez, forcing a stoppage after five one-sided rounds. On the same card, Antonio Margarito thrust himself back into the picture by brutalizing defending IBF welterweight titlist Kermit Cintron before knocking him out in the 6th round.

Cotto, 146, Caguas Puerto Rico, electrified the large continent of Puerto Rican fans with his dominating performance against an outgunned Gomez, 147, Tustin California by way of Mexico.

Cotto, known for his punching power and body attack, opened the bout by boxing and moving. Gomez steadily moved forward in pursuit but was unable to land any meaningful punches, while Cotto snapped his head back with several searing jabs, easily winning the 1st round and causing some early damage to Gomez’s right eye.

The action picked up in the 2nd round as Cotto started to unleash his famous body work and each shot to Gomez’s ribcage thundered throughout the arena. Late in the round, a right hand deposited Gomez on the canvas and another combination at the bell sent him stumbling across the ring.

Unlike Gomez’s last appearance in Atlantic City, when everything went perfectly in his win over Arturo Gatti, nothing seemed to go right for him against Cotto’s relentless attack. That attack paid more dividends in the 3rd round when a double left hook from Cotto sent Gomez to his knees.

Whereas Cotto was gaining momentum, Gomez was losing his will in the 4th and 5th rounds. Without the fear of Gomez’s offense, Cotto attacked without concern and another short hook sent Gomez sprawling again early in the 5th. At the end of the round, Gomez slumped back in his corner a beaten man, his face a grotesque mask of blood and swelling. The ringside physician advised Gomez’s corner to stop the fight as he had taken an overwhelming amount of punishment.

With the victory, Cotto retains his title and improves his record to 32-0 (26) while Gomez falls to 18-4-2 (8).

In the chief undercard bout, Antonio Margarito again proved too much for Kermit Cintron, annexing his IBF title in the process.

When they first met in 2005, Margarito was too experienced and after surviving Cintron’s best, he took control and battered him for a 5th round stoppage. Since that time, Margarito looked to be on the downside, losing to Paul Williams and struggling with Joshua Clottey, while Cintron was on the rise, teaming up with legendary trainer Emmanuel Steward andwinning five straight bouts by knockout. Going into the rematch, Cintron was favored to avenge his only professional loss.

Cintron, 146, Reading Pennsylvania, tried seizing control early by attacking Margarito, 146, Tijuana Mexico, with power punches. Margarito, a notorious slow starter, started much faster, landing several jabs and finding the range on his overhand right.

Both fighters stood toe-to-toe in the 2nd round and began exchanging power punches with Margarito getting the better, repeatedly landing his right hand over Cintron’s low left and digging body shots. Margarito kept pressing in the 3rd and by this time Cintron was now retreating, his only respite was when an unintentional headbutt caused a cut over Margarito’s left eye.

The blood seemed to inspire Margarito as he pursued Cintron, firing booming right hands and head-snapping uppercuts that kept finding their mark as Cintron was clearly in retreat mode. Cintron was wobbled in the 5th and blood started leaking from his right eye.

By the 6th round, it was clear that the body punches had drained Cintron’s energy as he found himself against the ropes, taking punishment. Margarito put an exclamation point to his performance, deflating Cintron with a devastating left hook to the liver, which left him in a crumpled heap where the referee counted him out 1:57.

Margarito improves his record to 36-5 (26) while Cintron falls to 29-2 (27), with both losses coming against Margarito.

It has been announced that Cotto and Margarito will meet July 26 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, with not only the WBA and IBF titles at stake, but also a chance to be next in line for a mega showdown with Floyd Mayweather.

In other bouts:

Jesus Rojas, 122, Caguas Puerto Rico, destroyed Andres Ledesma, 123, Cartagena Columbia, dropping him twice for a 4th round TKO. Rojas had Ledesma hurt on several occasions before dropping him with a big left hook and follow up combination early in the 4th. After Ledesma rose on unsteady legs, Rojas had no mercy, attacking Ledesma and finished him with another booming left hook.

Rojas remains undefeated at 11-0 (9) while Ledesma falls to 14-9-1 (9).

Omar Coffi, 165, Caracas Venezuela, and Don Mouten, 164, Houston Texas, fought to an entertaining split draw. Mouten tried to neutralize Coffi’s height and reach advantage by attacking with wide punches but left himself open to precise counter punches. Mouten finally found success by staggering Coffi in the 3rd round but it was Coffi who landed better punches in the 4th. At the end of bout, Coffi was favored on one card 40-36, Mouten on another 39-37, while the deciding judge had it a stalemate at 38-38, while this reporter favored Coffi by the score of 39-37

Omar, making his pro debut, now has a record of 0-0-1 and Mouten is now 3-2-1 (3).

In a mismatch, Ronny Vargas, 159, Bronx New York, dominated Roberto Irrizarry, 162, New York New York, winning by TKO in the 3rd round. Vargas used his advantages in reach and athletic ability to keep Irrizarry at bay and punish him with a variety of punches, including booming right hands, before Irrizarry’s corner threw in the towel, signaling surrender.

Vargas ups his record to 5-0 (4) while Irrizarry drops to 2-4.

Luis Cruz, 125, Las Piedras Puerto Rico, was able to keep Olvin Meija, 126, Laredo Texas at bay, using his six-inch reach advantage, over six rounds. Meija had a good opening round landing straight lefts but Cruz dominated over the last five rounds, landing a variety of impressive punches and staggering Meija on several occasions. The judges awarded Cruz the decision, all three scoring the bout 58-56.

Cruz is now 5-0 (3) while Meija falls to 3-2-1 (3).

In an entertaining opening bout, Richard Pierson, 161, Paterson New Jersey, outboxed Angel David Gonzalez, 163, Guaynabo Puerto Rico. Pierson, a very skilled boxer used some excellent footwork and angles to control the pace and pick his shots, often counterpunching the wide open Gonzalez. Both boxers were staggered in the 5th round and Pierson coasted in the 6th, knowing he was well ahead on the cards, despite the boos and catcalls from the crowd. Pierson was victorious on the cards by scores of 59-56 (twice) and 59-55.

Pierson improves to 7-1 (4) while Gonzalez dips to 6-5-1 (3).

INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE CAMP TRAINER AND AUTHOR MARTIN ROONEY TAKES MMA SKILLS TO THE NFL

Posted on | April 14, 2008 | No Comments

Training For Warriors Breaks Into Top Ten Among Sports Titles As Renzo Gracie Aide Readies Next Generation Of Stars For The NFL Draft

New York, April 14, 2008: As the International Fight League (IFL) readies for its next event at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 16, IFL Camp Trainer Martin Rooney has his eyes set on several additional goals, including the top of the sports bestseller list and the top picks in the NFL Draft. The Fair Lawn, N.J., resident, one of the most sought-after fitness professionals in the world, has spent a good part of his non-IFL training work this winter readying many of the potential top picks for the upcoming NFL Draft (including potential top pick Chris Long and Rutgers standout Ray Rice) for selection weekend, as well as promoting his MMA-style workout book Training For Warriors, which has rocketed up the sports best seller list (it was at No. 7 this week on ESPN’s list).

Rooney, who was a member of the United States Bobsled Team from 1995-1997 and in 2000, and a four-time All Conference MVP performer in Track and Field at Furman University, is also a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Ricardo Almeida and a black belt in Kodokan Judo under Sensei Matsumura and Olympian Teimoc Johnston-Ono of the prestigious New York Athletic Club. He has used all that training to perfect hand-eye coordination conditioning tactics that many of the elite MMA athletes in the world (including top IFL athletes and coaches like Renzo Gracie, Jamal Patterson, Delson Heleno, and many UFC and PRIDE MMA stars) and now apply them to the elite athlete, especially those in the NFL and top collegiate programs.

“The mental discipline, quickness and flexibility training that makes Mixed Martial Arts the phenomenon that is has become and has helped forge so many recent successes like the athletes from Renzo Gracie’s New York-based Academy are skills that we have seen translate very well to other sports, especially football,” Rooney said. “It has been great to see how the MMA success story, through a book like Training For Warriors, can help make so many elite athletes even better.”

In addition to his draft training and his work with the IFL, Rooney has been the martial arts consultant for the New York Giants and New York Jets and is a speed and conditioning consultant to a host of colleges and many athletes from the NFL, MLB, NBA and WNBA. He has also trained numerous Olympians, including one gold and four silver medalists.

Currently, Martin is COO and director of training of the Parisi Speed School. The Parisi Speed School is launching its national franchise opportunity under Martin’s leadership, and there are already over thirty franchises in twenty states across the country sold in addition to five company-owned stores in New Jersey.

Details of the book can also be found at trainingforwarriors.com.

MMA AND BOXING SHOW LOOKS TO BREAK NEW GROUND HOPING TO PUSH MIXED MARTIAL ARTS CLOSER TO THE MAINSTREAM

Posted on | April 14, 2008 | No Comments

4/14/08 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Airs Monday Nights LIVE on TheStream.TV
Simultaneously Syndicated on Live.Yahoo.com, BlogTV.com, Stickam.com, ProElite.com
Archives of each new show available the following Tuesday morning

In February 2008, The Yac & J’s MMA and BOXING SHOW launched as a part of a line-up of new Internet TV Programming on interactive, fledgling network, THESTREAM.TV. The series is co-hosted by ProElite.com Correspondent/Commentator ‘The Yacman’ Ron Yacovetti, Pundit and Practitioner Randy Johnson (aka Randy J) and MMA.TV’s Underground Queen Miss RaRa.

Amongst a handful of quality MMA television shows, The Yac & J Show offers the unique characteristic of being fully interactive while broadcasting LIVE. During the webcasts, airing on four to five online syndicates, viewers can instant message into the show or chime in via the chat functions that accompany the video players. Each episode is immediately available to view the following Tuesday morning.

Preparing them for this venue, Ron Yacovetti and Randy Johnson tout full time careers in stand-up comedy, having toured nationally, appearing in major comedy club chains such as THE IMPROV, CATCH A RISING STAR and DANGERFIELD’S in NYC. This unique background in the comedy world is something that Yac & J did not want to exclude from their MMA endeavors. Instead, it provided them an avenue to produce a show in a manner unlike anything else in MMA or BOXING. The recipe is one part comedy, one part combat sports.

In addition to their comedic efforts, The Yacman and Randy J have always been involved in the fight world in one way or another. Both have trained in various fighting disciplines over the years. And Yacovetti also wrote and produced for a couple of syndicated boxing shows, as well as penning an online column for BoxingInsider.com.

Miss RaRa (whose real name is Tamara) was drawn into MMA by her close friend Drea who had become acquainted with one of the most celebrated Jiu-Jitsu experts around, Eddie Bravo. Once she took one step into the world of the cage fighter, Miss RaRa never looked back and the MMA community online embraced her. Tamara also put herself in a position to give back to the sport of MMA in an amazing way within a very brief time frame, as she is one of the organizers of the annual North American Mixed Martial Arts Expo – known as NAMMAE.

Their collective reason to do this show, besides a shared passion for the sport, may surprise you. The vision Yac and J’s MMA and BOXING SHOW has for itself, is to help push both sports, though mostly MMA, further into the mainstream. The Yacman says you need not look far to see the blueprint for such a thing, already producing that result in another venue.

Ron Yacovetti, of ProElite.com, says, “All you need to do is look at how unappealing politics were a number of years back, both with young and middle-aged people, and how informed and involved those generations are regarding it now. Why the change in this arena? I’d undoubtedly say in large part thanks to ‘The Daily Show’ and ‘The Colbert Report’ on Comedy Central — and HBO’s ‘Real Time with Bill Mahr’. These are comedic based shows that entertain, lampoon and still get the word out mainstream. If we can successfully build our own brand, from this type of model within the combat sports world, it could help make MMA far more digestible to the masses. Nothing would make us happier than to make a difference that way.”

Yac and J’s MMA and BOXING SHOW is currently sponsored by ProElite.com, Melee Fight Gear and it airs LIVE every Monday Night 10pm PT / 1am ET, with archives available the next morning, on TheStream.TV.

About Melee Fight Gear

For Fighters, Fans, and Friends of MMA

In 2006, the founder of Melee Fight Gear began training at the renowned Legends Training Center in Hollywood, California. Melee was formed out of the MMA and Jiu-Jitsu community at the gym and was inspired by the presence of superstars like Bas Rutten, Randy Couture and Eddie Bravo. As friends climbed the ranks of the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system, the Melee team began designing ranked no-gi shorts that would mirror traditional belts. With the input of fighters, grapplers, and friends, the Melee ranked no-gi shorts were born. From there came a catalogue of quality fight shorts featuring the Melee dual split-seam design.

A line of everyday sports apparel was a natural progression from short production. Melee took the principle of using quality fabrics and an eye toward modern graphic design to make real clothes for real people. “We wanted to make clothes that we would wear,” says Melee Founder Steven Moreno. “We wanted to represent the sport without looking like gangsters or pirates.” Melee continues to serve fighters, fans, and friends of MMA and hopes that you will find our equipment and apparel of exceptional quality and design.
