The Inwood Boxing Academy: Keeping the Youth of Washington Heights off The Streets

Posted on | March 23, 2008 | 2 Comments

By Matt Yanofsky

As you walk off the streets of Uptown Manhattan and down the steps at 651 Academy Street, the first thing you may notice is the diminutive size of the Inwood Boxing Academy. The Gym’s owner Joe Brender says even though his gym is small in size, it has a big impact on many at risk youths in the Inwood and Washington Heights area. “We are servicing the community as plenty of young people are coming to the gym and working hard. We have troubled kids joining the gym because their parents want them off the streets. We are training them to become boxers, but not fighters. We are their mentors and we are professionals”, said Brender.

The gym which mostly is used by amateurs training for the Golden Gloves does host a few pros. Former IBA cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn and USBA title challenger/Edgar Santana conqueror Harrison Cuello have trained at the Inwood Boxing Academy in preparation for their licensed bouts. When asked about the gym, Gunn was happy to discuss his experience at the Inwood Boxing Academy

“Joe Brender is one of the nicest and most honest people in New York boxing today. He is a dear friend of mine and if any boxer is looking for a nice place to train, you have to look no further then the Inwood Boxing Academy”, said Gunn who just fought to a bloody draw March 22nd in Arizona.

The Inwood Boxing Academy has not only kept many youths who were once looking for trouble in a positive atmosphere but the gym also acts is an excellent example of what is needed to keep children away from potential dangers in a tough city environment.

Gunn Battles to 6 Round Draw, Requires 36 Stitches

Posted on | March 23, 2008 | 1 Comment

For Immediate Release

Former IBA cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn 18-3-1 (15 KO’s) battled to a six round draw with Cory “The Cobra” Phelps 11-3-1 (6 KO’s) in the main event at the Fort McDowell Casino in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Gunn was cut over his eye only 30 seconds into the first round as an accidental headbutt immediately caused him bleed profusely in addition to receiving some unexpected problems from Phelps. Knowing that he may be in some trouble due to the cut as well as Phelps jab and move mentality, Gunn managed to hurt Phelps in the fourth and fifth round with body shots before his opponent began to retreat.

After the fight, the bloodied Gunn knew he had to rally in the last few rounds due to the circumstances, which also included the fight being changed from a ten to a six round contest at the weigh in. The hard hitting Canadian also revealed that doctors told him the headbutt caused him to fracture his eye socket.

“Phelps is a good game opponent but I wish the fight was a ten rounder as initially scheduled. I couldn’t see out of my eye for the first three rounds and I would love a rematch as soon as possible. I know that I would have stopped this kid if it was a ten rounder and he knows it too!

HATTON VS. MALIGNAGGI ON THE TABLE FOR MAY

Posted on | March 23, 2008 | No Comments

NEW YORK– IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi hopes to ink a pact early next week to confirm his dream deal: a two-fight arrangement culminating with a showdown against the world’s recognized No. 1 junior welterweight, Ricky Hatton, The Ring magazine and IBO title-holder.

Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi

“I’ve got to admit that, after the Cotto fight,” Malignaggi said, “I never thought that I’d get the chance to fight another great champion again. I believed in myself, but it was almost like I proved too much to everyone, that I had skills, but most of all, that I’m as tough as anyone who ever laced on gloves. I’m really grateful that Team Hatton looks like they’ll give me the opportunity to fight on Ricky’s big card in Manchester in May and then against him in the Fall in the United States.

“Ricky and I have a lot in common. Both our fathers were soccer players – his in England and mine in Italy – and we’ve both paid our dues and earned the respect of the fans and other fighters. The only marks on our records came against two great fighters, Mayweather and Cotto.

Ricky Hatton

What makes it so exciting is the big difference in our fighting styles. Ricky is rough and tough; an all-action fighter who takes advantage of everything he can to get the win. You’re never going to see a Hatton fight that doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat. Most of my fights have been boxing matches. The excitement was dictated by how aggressive the other guy wanted to be. If they brought it, they got it back times 10. I know I’m at the top of my game right now and that’s what it takes to have a chance against a great champion like Ricky Hatton.”

Malignaggi (24-1, 5 KOs) captured the IBF title last June, defeating champion Lovemore N’dou (45-8-1) by 12-found decision, and Paulie successfully defended his belt in January with a 12-round decision against No. 1 contender Herman Ngoudjo (16-1).

“Everyone was blown away when they heard Ricky was going to fight at City of Manchester Stadium,” Paulie continued. “It’s going to be crazy over there! They’ve had a lot of quality fighters in Great Britain – Joe Calzaghe, David Haye, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. They also had Lennox Lewis, but nothing like what Ricky means to them. Vegas was crazy last December and I know we can bring that atmosphere back when we go at it in the Fall. This won’t be a Friendly, more like a World Cup match, wherever we fight.

“My goal has always been to make the biggest and best fights, just like my great friend, Floyd Mayweather, has told me to do. A match-up between me and Ricky will be a Super Fight, one talked about for as long as there is boxing. No other fight at 140 matters.

Paul Malignaggi and Aaron Baraunstein

And before the fight, well, everyone knows that I talk a lot of smack, so Ricky’s not going to get any breaks there, either. Like with Floyd, me and Ricky can save seeing if we’re cool until once we’ve earned each other’s respect at the only place it counts – in the ring. There is no one, I repeat, no one I want to fight more than the No. 1 guy in the division – Ricky Hatton. Forget the money, forget the titles, this is about being the best. I know that if I get in the ring with Ricky Hatton, I’ll show him and everyone else what I’m made of, that I am the best 140-pound fighter in the world.

“I want to thank Ricky, his father, Ray, his lawyer, Gareth, who I met in Vegas, my team and everyone at Golden Boy and DBE for working so hard on this. I know I’m not always the easiest guy to deal with because I get so emotional over stupid stuff and open my mouth. I want to hype things up and get my chance to prove to everyone that I can walk the walk with the best. I’m ready to sign on the dotted line and prove to the Hattons and everyone else that Paulie Malignaggi is ready and up for the task of making this the biggest and best promotion that it can be. The best versus the best!
‘Magic Man’

If Ricky Hatton can beat me, then he can close the book on the 140-pound division. But no one’s beating the ‘Magic Man’ ever again. Me and Ricky are both professionals and know we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We both know that if we don’t win in May, our fight can never happen. Let everyone know that Paulie Malignaggi will do his part to make this happen and I’m counting on Ricky to do the same.”

ANDRE WARD STAYS UNBEATEN, PUNISHES WILLIAMS

Posted on | March 23, 2008 | No Comments

The Associated Press
Published: March 21, 2008

Andre Ward stopped Rubin Williams late in the seventh round of their super middleweight bout Thursday, keeping the Olympic gold medalist unbeaten as a professional.

Ward (15-0, 10 KOs) and the only American champion from the last two Olympics, had control from the opening round in his first fight since stopping Roger Cantrell last November.

He did it mostly with one arm, hitting the sluggish, overweight Williams with jabs and straight left hands almost at will. But Ward didn’t answer the questions about his killer instinct, failing to put away his overmatched opponent despite nearly seven rounds of target practice.

A cut over Williams’ left eye eventually did what Ward couldn’t. The cut opened in the second round, and the injury grew until the referee stopped the bout with 5 seconds left in the seventh round of Ward’s fifth straight KO victory.

“I had to bring my best game in order to beat him,” Ward said. “I had to take my time, and then I knew I had to step it up from the fifth round on.”

Williams (29-4-1), a veteran best known for losing to Jeff Lacy in a March 2005 title shot, couldn’t make the 168-pound (76-kilogram) weight limit, but the fight went on anyway. Williams is winless in his last three fights, yet he’s still the best opponent Ward has ever faced – but Ward plans to change that soon.

“I’m ready for my time to shine, but I’ve got to be realistic,” Ward said. “Hopefully I’ll bring a breath of fresh air to the sport of boxing.”

Though a generation of past gold medalists got relatively quick title shots, Ward’s professional career has proceeded deliberately in the 3 1/2 years since he trounced the light heavyweight division in Athens. His management has carefully chosen his matchups, and Ward also missed seven months in 2006 with a thumb injury.

His pace is expected to pick up soon, however. Ward, who still trains at historic King’s Gym in Oakland, is hoping for several bigger fights this year, with a title shot among his short-term aspirations.

His Bay Area fans made up most of the crowd of 4,588 at HP Pavilion for Ward’s fourth bout in San Jose, but the fight didn’t get underway until 10:40 p.m. Pacific time because of a lengthy television broadcast beforehand.

“I gotta work tomorrow!” a fan shouted from the stands during a dull period of the seventh round.

Midwest Cage Championship Brings MCC 13: Contenders to Bucs Arena on April 2

Posted on | March 21, 2008 | No Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Des Moines, IA- March 21, 2008- Victor “Superman” Moreno, former Midwest Cage Championship (MCC) welterweight champion, returns to the cage to settle a grudge match with local up and comer Ben Crowder on Friday, April 25. Moreno has faced some of the toughest competitors across the country during his five year pro career.” I’m more excited about this bout than anything and anyone I’ve faced throughout my career.” stated a confident Moreno. Crowder, a well known and tough competitor, has a reputation for his heavy hands and ” I’ll take on anyone, anytime” attitude. He’s looks to boost that reputation with a big win over “Superman”. Both fighters have pledged this fight will not go the distance and there is bound to be plenty of fireworks with an unfortunate ending for one of these warriors.

In the featherweight division, undeniably one of the most exciting weight classes in mixed martial arts today, Will Shutt lost his title to Josh Atwell during the previous MCC 12 event in one of the most exciting fights ever witnessed by an Iowa crowd. This time, MCC delivers a four man featherweight tournament where the winner will face new champion Josh Atwell in a future bout. Nick Walker, Brad Floyd, TJ O’Brien and Will Shut will battle in back and forth, non-stop bouts that will determine the contender to the belt. MCC picked a favorite category and doubled the action. This tournament alone is worth the price of admission.

In the Lightweight category, MCC Champion Teddy “Red” Worthington had been scheduled for a title defense bout with number one contended Bryce Teager. That match-up has been moved to MCC 14, with a date will being announced soon. Midwest Cage Championship sends best wishes to Bryce and his wife as they prepare to welcome their second child into the world. We know everyone is excited to witness Teager vs. Worthington, and please stay tuned for details. Worthington, vowing to remain active right up to the Teager bout, will fight in a non-title welterweight bout at MCC13. “Teddy goes 110% and 100 miles an hour every time he enters the cage. We’re always happy to have him in the promotion.” offered John Halverson, MCC partner and one of the MCC13 matchmakers.

Additionally, rising star Paul Bird, owning a win over Nick Walker in MCC 12, is quickly working his way toward the top of the fight game. Relentless training and fierce competition fuels his fire as his improved skills are put to the test. Bird, known as the “Gingerbread Man” is one of the most exciting fighters in the lightweight division and holds the dream of competing in the UFC in his mind at all times. Bird is the complete game. His precision striking combined with dangerous submissions create huge challenges for competitors and total excitement for fans. MMC 13 works to push his dream closer to reality. Bird is clearly a fighter with his eyes on the prize, and all eyes in the crowd upon him.

Midwest Cage Championship is held on Friday, April 25 at the 95KGGO/Bucs Arena at 7201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Fights start at 7:30 PM.

Tickets can be purchased at the Bucs Arena box office, by calling (515) 278-9757, and on-line at www.midwestcagechampionship.com
