March 7, 2008 — Cota Boxing Promotions is proud to announce that it has recently added Gabriel “Rey” Martinez and Rodolfo “Bam Bam” Armenta to its growing stable of fighters. Both fighters are under management of Venki Cantua and will be making their debut on March 29th at the “Gymnasio Tigre Garcia” in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

Martinez (17-0-1, 9 KO’S), who hails from Empalme, Sonora, Mexico is a four-time National Amateur Champion, has participated in the Pan American Games and was chosen to the Mexican Olympic Alternate team. Martinez is looking to take over the Welterweight Division in the near future.

Armenta (4-0-0, 2KO’s), who hails from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico is a young fighter with great punching power. Look for this young prospect to be a force in the Light Welterweight Division.

These two fighters join WBC CABOFE Middleweight Champion and former Contender TV Series Star Miguel Espino as well as undefeated Bantamweight prospect Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West to the Cota Boxing Promotions family. All four fighters are scheduled to appear on the March 29th fighting card in Mexico.

Saturday’s Showtime Cage Rage 25: Shamrock-Berry Quotes, Weigh-In Photo/Weights

Posted on | March 7, 2008 | No Comments

The legendary Ken Shamrock and Robert “Buzz” Berry will fight in the main event of “EliteXC Presents Cage Rage 25” tomorrow/Saturday, March 8, on SHOWTIME, in London.

The four-bout mixed martial arts event will be televised immediately following the world cruiserweight title unification fight between champions David Haye (WBC/WBA) and Enzo Maccarinelli (WBC/WBA) live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) in London.

Friday, in London, the legendary Shamrock (left) weighed 216 pounds. Berry weighed 240 pounds (quotes below).

Weights for other SHOWTIME televised fights:

Jean Silva (144 pounds) vs. Masakazu Imanari (144 pounds)

Pierre Guillet (184 pounds) vs. Tom Watson (185 pounds)

Rob Broughton (282 pounds) vs. Neil Grove (273 pounds)

KEN SHAMROCK QUOTES:

“Competition. The minute you stop, your whole life changes and it’s the thrill of competition that has kept me going. When you’re done as an athlete, you have to know it, and I don’t know it yet.

“There were a couple of times when I had injuries — one to my knee, one to my shoulder — when I thought I would be forced to quit. But rehab got me stronger and stronger every time. I have never imagined myself retiring.

“It’s an honor to be considered a pioneer in this sport. And it is inspiring to see these young guys coming up to carry the torch.”

BUZZ BERRY QUOTES:

“I have a lot of respect for Ken Shamrock, but when it is fight time and the first bell rings, it’s time to explode. I have to stay within myself; my strength is that I am an all around fighter and my power is my (main) strength.”

APRIL 3 BALLROOM BOXING PREVIEW

Posted on | March 7, 2008 | No Comments

From Ballroom Matchmaker Chris Middendorf…

Tyrell Samuel (9-2) vs. Thomas Snow (10-0) for the Maryland State Featherweight Title, 10 rounds

“All I can say is that I am excited. Ballroom Boxing has always been about quality match-ups, the best area talent and bringing in great prospects from around the country and even around the world. And every once in a while there will be a local match-up at four rounds or six rounds that is compelling. But what is so rare is a fight like this between two of the best young fighters in the area over ten rounds, The thing that I realized when Joppy retired is that for a while we had the best middleweights in the country with Keith Holmes and William Joppy, we never got to see them fight each other. And for a while we had some of the best junior welterweights with Reggie Green, Demarcus Corley, Daryl Tyson and Teddy Reid, and Sharmba Mitchell. And out of all their fights, and they each fought the best fighters in the world, when Reggie fought Tyson and Sharmba or when Tyson fought Corley late in his career, these were some of the most talked about, argued about and anticipated fights in the area,

So I give real credit to both of these young fighters that they have agreed to fight each other. In many ways it is a crossroads fights for each of them, even though they have too few fights to be at a crossroads. But Tyrell lost on Showtime to Eric Hunter, took some time off and now is really ready to get his career back on track in a big way. And Thomas, who has been roundly criticized for fighting soft opposition, actually called me and asked me if I could make that fight. And even though he would prefer to be fighting at 122, and Tyrell is well on his way to fighting at junior lightweight, they both agreed to fight at 126 and then realized at that weight that we could make it for the Maryland State title at ten rounds, a distance neither one of them has gone.

April 3rd is shaping up to be one of the best Ballroom cards with this main event, and an exciting series of fights and fighters underneath: Mike Paschall will be fighting an 8 rounder which we will announce early next week and it will be his stiffest test yet against a fighter with world class experience. Also on the card will be the undefeated at 8-0, Carney Bowman from nearby York, who will have a very special guest supporting him. That announcement will be made as we get closer to the fight.

More announcements will follow in the next couple of days, but you can be assured that it will be a very good show.”

Arnaoutis schools Cuello with impressive win!

Posted on | March 7, 2008 | No Comments

12 round unanimous decision earns “Mighty Mike” USBA title.
By Mike Indri
Retired Boxers Foundation
March 6, 2008

NEW YORK – In front of a packed house at the Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, Mike Arnaoutis out hustled and out boxed the usually difficult Harrison Cuello; making what was thought to be a competitive fight, for a regional title belt, into a one-sided boxing clinic.

While the scrappy Greek fighter’s humungous legion of proud fans banged their drums, screamed their chants and waved their flags; which turned the capacity-filled building into a sea of blue and white, Arnaoutis’s punches eventually turned his Dominican opponent’s face into a bumpy red mess.

Quickly establishing himself as the quicker and heavier handed fighter, Arnaoutis was relentless and fought hard for the entire three minutes of every round. Cuello resorted to fighting in spurts, and along with getting bullied and beaten, was only able to win a single round in the eyes the judges, as all three scored this welterweight contest 119-109 for Arnaoutis.
Several times the two fisted attack by Arnaoutis appeared to have Cuello ready to be taken out, but to his credit the gutsy 30 year-old managed to survive.

The dominant victory for Arnaoutis puts the Atlantic City resident back in the win column following two disappointing decision losses; a unanimous decision loss to Kendall Holt last April and the highly debated split decision defeat against Ricardo Torres (11/18/2006), who currently holds the WBO light welterweight title.

Arnaoutis improved to 18-2-2 (9 KO’s) with the win, while Cuello slips to 15-6-2 (11KO’s).

In the co-feature bout of the evening popular heavyweight slugger Vinny Maddalone needed little time to dispose of Jeff Yeoman, now a winner of three of his last ten bouts. The trip from Lafayette, Indiana must have taken most of the fight out of Yeoman, because it surely did not look like the soon-to-be forty-three year-old boxer (03/23) was in any mood to defy the dangerous native of Flushing, NY. After slipping, sliding and holding to make it through round one Yeoman was dropped to his knees by Maddalone’s first solid body punch. A right to the chin sent the now 21-9 (7 KO’s) fighter back down to the canvas but somehow a slip was ruled. Never the less Maddalone put a punch of clubbing shots together early in round two and the overwhelmed Yeoman was on his back in a heap and referee Dick Flaherty obviously had seen enough and waved off the mismatch without even bothering to count, at the 2:11 mark. The technical knockout win improved the genuinely likable Maddalone’s record to 29-4 (20 KO’s).

There was no need for any judges during the Star Boxing undercard as all four of the bouts ended via stoppages.

Curtis Stevens managed to pull himself up off the canvas late in round two, and weathered the storm before finally wearing down seasoned veteran Thomas Reid. Coasting early, Stevens was putting in his usual workman-like effort and driving the forty year-old Tennessee native around the ring before Reid stunned the crowd by hurting the powerful Stevens with a quick left and followed with a big overhand right which sent the young prospect to the canvas. Still dazed and confused Stevens beat the count and luckily the round was over. While still a bit foggy going into round three, the twenty-two year-old Brownsville fighter was clearing up as the moments passed and Reid could only blame himself for letting his chance slip away.

Stevens would regain his wits and forge on. The pounding finally wore down the cagey veteran and a heavy barrage wobbled Reid midway through the eighth and final round. Leaving nothing to chance Stevens continued the pounding and unleashed a vicious left hook, which had Reid unconscious while still on his feet. Referee David Fields had to pry the knockout minded Stevens off of Reid at the 2:55 mark for the TKO win.

Definitely possessing the talent and power, Stevens did not look as sharp or potent as he has earlier. Looking to be carrying a bit too much weight, Stevens appears to be short changing himself battling light heavyweights.

Finding the discipline to get down to 165 pounds would make Stevens a better prospect.

Promising Philadelphia welterweight Raymond Serrano, Jr. pummeled a game, yet severely overmatched, Abe Bruno for two minutes and fifty nine seconds before referee Dick Flaherty finally waved off the beating. While proving to be a resilient, big-hearted opponent, Bruno withstood tremendous punishment before finally dropping to the canvas late in the first round. Bruno, who has not won a fight since his 3 round TKO victory over a winless Manuel Bruno (maybe a relative!!) in 1998, and going 0-7-1 since then, struggled to his feet but not before Flaherty’s count reached 10. Serrano remains undefeated 4-0 (3 KO’s), while Bruno drops to 6-11-4 (3 KO’s).

Heavyweight Tim Skolniek, making his pro debut, opened the show in a big way. Getting dropped by his taller opponent, Shawn Mclean from Freeport, NY, in round two, Skolniek came out quickly in round three and crushed Mclean, now 1-2 (1 KO) with a monster right hand that incapacitated his devastated foe. Skolniek picked up the entertaining KO win in the scheduled four rounder.

The knockout of the night belonged to undefeated heavyweight prospect Nagy Aguilera, from Newburgh, NY. Taking on 284 lb. Mike Jones (6-14 with 2 KO’s), a late replacement, Aguilera went headhunting early. Looking in better condition than his last NY appearance this past December, Aguilera whistled a pulverizing right hand that nearly decapitated his overmatched, and under conditioned, opponent who was out before he hit the canvas at 1:35 in the first round, of the scheduled six round bout. The very quick handed, powerful and popular “Dominican Dynamite” stays perfect at 7-0, with Jones his 5th knockout victim.

The Joe DeGaurdia, Star Boxing, show filled the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom to its limit, a good sign for NY boxing, especially with a boxing show the night before at the Hammerstein Ballroom, located right downstairs!

Curtis “Showtime” Stevens will step into the ring at the Manhattan Center on March 6

Posted on | March 6, 2008 | No Comments

Curtis “Showtime” Stevens

Bronx, NY- For the first time since signing a multi-year deal with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, Curtis “Showtime” Stevens will step into the ring at the Manhattan Center on March 6. Stevens will appear as part of the action packed under card which features a USBA Junior Welterweight title fight between “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis vs. Harrison Cuello. Also, featured in the co- main event is fan favorite New Yorker Vinny Maddalone battling veteran Jeff Yeoman in an 8 round Heavyweight match up. Sports website www.GoFightLive.TV will web cast the entire event online.

One half of the famed “Chin Checkers”, Brooklyn, NY native Stevens (17-2-1, 12KO’s) is a throwback to the old days of boxing with his killer left hook and crippling body punching. Curtis presents a danger to anyone who stands opposite him in the squared circle. On this occasion, it will be journeyman, Thomas Reid (35-21-1, 13KO’s) of Jackson, TN, who in his own right is not to be taken lightly. Stevens will have his hands full as he will be facing a fighter who has gone up against some of the best in the business. Taking on a who’s who of the 175-pound realm, Reid has fought the likes of former WBC light heavyweight champion and Roy Jones Jr. conqueror Montell Griffin, WBO 175-pound titlist Julio Gonzalez, and light heavyweight contenders Elvir Muriqi, Yusaf Mack, and Prince Badi Ajamu.

The bout is scheduled for 8 rounds in the Super Middleweight division and promises to be an all action affair.

The balance of the exciting undercard will be announced shortly.

LUDWIG FALLS TO GOMI DUE TO CUT

Posted on | March 6, 2008 | No Comments

“Duane Ludwig had said he was excited to be competing against the best in the world in Takanori Gomi but unfortunately for him and for fans, the fight was cut short before it could really develop.

Both fighters started out with sporadic jousting while circling the ring. Gomi, shifting his stance between orthodox and southpaw throughout, eventually caught his opponent with a good left hand that knocked him to the mat momentarily. However, Gomi couldn’t capitalize on the advantage before Ludwig got back to his feet.

Ludwig, while relatively unfazed by the punch, began to bleed heavily from a cut opened by the impact. The fighter was directed to the doctor, and it was determined that the cut was too severe to continue, giving Gomi the TKO at the 2:28 mark of the first.

Gomi apologized to fans afterward and said he definitely wanted to fight Ludwig again.”
Ludwig had the following comments:

“He landed a good shot but I popped right back and was ready to go. We exchanged again and then the ref stepped in to look at my nose and they stopped it. I really wanted to keep fighting and I felt I was winning. There was a rule for this show that no Vaseline can be used at all, even a little on the face like all other shows. I think that had a lot to do with the cut. I respect Gomi a lot, he is a great fighter, but we didn’t get to really finish this fight. I want to fight him again, he wants to fight me again. I hope we can set up the rematch as soon as possible. ”

FULL RESULTS:

-Josh Barnett def. Hidehiko Yoshida by Submission (Heel Hook) at 3:23, R3

-Takanori Gomi def. Duane Ludwig by TKO (Cut) at 2:28, R1

-Kazuo Misaki def. Siyar Bahadurzada by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 2:02, R2

-Kazuyuki Fujita def. Peter Graham by Submission (North-South Choke) at 1:32, R1

-Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos def. Makoto Takimoto by Submission (Heel Hook) at 4:51, R1

-Ryo Kawamura def. Antonio Braga Neto by Unanimous Decision, R3

-Nick Thompson def. Fabricio Monteiro by Unanimous Decision, R3

Damage control for hungry Manfredo vs. Benfield

Posted on | March 6, 2008 | No Comments

“Rumble at the River,” March 14 at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE (March 6, 2008) – World super middleweight challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr. (28-5, 13 KOs) is hungry again and planning to do some damage to Shane “The Irish Hitman” Benfield (17-1, 9 KOs) on March 14 in their 10-round main event, headlining “Rumble at the River,” part of “The Budweiser Night at the Fights,” at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Vinny Paz and “Irish” Micky Ward are serving as honorary captains of Team Italy and Team Ireland, respectively, for the Italian-Irish themed “Rumble at the River” pro boxing show, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., in association with Twin River, Budweiser and Tournament of Contenders.

Manfredo, 27, has starred on The Contender I reality television show, fought for the world title, and earned a healthy living in boxing. But something was missing after his loss by controversial stoppage to Joe Calzaghe for the world championship in Wales. “I’m hungry again,” Manfredo explained. “I didn’t really care about boxing last year. The (Jeff) Lacy fight woke me up. I realized I have to be mean, not trying to go in the ring to really hurt my opponent, but to do some damage. That’s what I plan to do against Benfield – take him out – and show everybody that’s who I really am. I love what I do. I don’t love the behind the scenes part of boxing, but in the real world it’s tough to take out your frustrations like you can in the ring. I’m the boss in the ring. We have the toughest job in the world; there are no guarantees in boxing, but I’m a fighter.

“I’d like to go back down to 160 (pounds) because I feel I’m too small fighting some of these guys.
It’s not that I can’t fight at super middleweight, but I want to be the best I can, and I think that’s at middleweight. I only plan on boxing until I’m 30, so I have three years left to make one last run at aworld title. Let’s see how I do against guys my size. I’m not sure when I’ll be fighting at 160. I’m thinking maybe my next fight will be at 165. Benfield’s a big guy who fought as a cruiserweight.”
Since graduating from his role in The Contender I, Manfredo’s fought in Wales, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, but he enjoys fighting at home. “It’s the best,” Peter said about fighting in Rhode Island. “There’s no place like home. It’s all about being comfortable in your surroundings. At home, I have my family and friends, sleep in my own bed, eat food I like…..everything is comfortable. One of the reason’s Joe Calzaghe has been so successful is because all of his fights have been at home.”

Three-time world champion Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (18-4-1, 7 KOs), fighting out of Cranston (RI) defends her IWBF lightweight crown against GBU junior welterweight title-holder Belinda “Brown Sugar” Larcuente (23-21-3, 9 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature. Twenty-one of Larcuente’s last 22 bouts, dating back nearly five years, have been against world champions, including 10 world title fights.

Stoughton (MA) cruiserweight Chris McInerney (9-1-1, 6 KOs) squares-off again versus former New England title-holder Tim “The Hammer” Flamos (19-4-1, 7 KOs), of Brockton, in a six-round rematch of a fight McInerney won by sixth round TKO last December.

Undefeated Russian middleweight Andre Nevsky (3-0, 3 KOs), of Worcester (MA), meets Eric Pinarreta (2-1, 2 KOs), of New Bedford (MA), in a four-round match. A pair of popular power-punchers, USBA No. 4 super middleweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (20-1-1, 15 KOs), of Providence, and Lowell (MA) light heavyweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (6-1, 4 KOs), are also on the undercard.

Undefeated Lynn (MA) flyweight Isander Beauchamp (3-0) faces Gabriel Cruz (2-1), while Providence junior welterweight Diego Pereira makes his pro debut. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
Manfredo, Spina, Flamos and Pinarreta are on Paz’ Team Italy; Benfield, Clampitt, McInerney and McCreedy are captained by Ward on Team Ireland.

Tickets for “Rumble at the River” are priced at $35.00 (ADA stage seating only), $40.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $75.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and may be purchased by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Rumble at the River.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by an adult and they must enter through the West entrance.)
