DUANE “BANG” LUDWIG TAKES ON TAKANORI GOMI

Posted on | March 4, 2008 | No Comments

Developing a game plan for the one of the world’s toughest fighters – on a few weeks’ notice – would be a challenge for any athlete. But trying to cut down to an extra weight class in the process could be called madness.

But that’s exactly what Duane “Bang”Ludwig (16-7) is trying to do for his upcoming fight with former PRIDE lightweight champ Takanori Gomi (27-3).

The Ludwig-Gomi fight headlines the World Victory Road’s debut show, which takes place Wednesday, March 5 at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. The co-main event bout takes place at 154 lbs.

“When I got the call, I was 183 lbs.,” said Ludwig, a two-time UFC fighter. “I was supposed to fight Steve Berger (at a Strikeforce show) at 170 lbs., so I was trying to keep on some weight. The call came, so it was time to start dropping the weight.”

WVR actually called up Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker to inquire about Ludwig for the fight, and once Ludwig got assurance that Berger wouldn’t be left without an opponent, he accepted the fight.

However, will such a drastic, unexpected cut affect Ludwig’s performance?

“Probably,” Ludwig admitted. “But we’ll see what happened. I couldn’t pass up the fight because it’s such a great opportunity.”
A win over Gomi, arguably the world’s top lightweight fighter, could be the biggest victory of of Ludwig’s career, though a January 2003 first-round KO of Jens Pulver (when Pulver was in his absolute prime) is right up there.

So, how do you fight Gomi, a fighter who likes to stand and trade but is as equally dangerous with submissions?

“I’m just going to see where the fight goes,” Ludwig said. “If I can get a submission, of course I’ll take a submission. Ideally, though, I’d like to keep it on the feet and see what I can do there. But if I get cracked or don’t have luck there, I’ll be happy to take the fight to the ground. But it’s MMA, so we’ll just see what happens.

SHIMMERS “HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT NIGHT” TO AIR LIVE AT 2:00 PM EST

www.GoFightLive.tv

On Sunday, March 9, White Lightning Promotions brings boxing to Shimmers in Ft. Wright, KY, and GoFightLive.tv’s “World Fight Night” will be there, as well, to webcast all the action LIVE!

In the 8 round co-feature main event Jeremy “Half Man-Half Amazing” Williams (42-5-1, 35 KO’s), Season 1 and 2 star of The Contenders, takes on Dayton, Ohio spoiler, and hard-punching Paul Rocky Phillips (21-14, 19 KO’s).
Williams, an all action, aggressive boxer is on his way to a big return as a cruiserweight. Williams is planning on entering the ring at Shimmers just on, or above the cruiserweight limit and take on the heavier, hard punching Rocky Phillips.

In the evening’s other co-feature bout, the heavyweight action keeps on coming, as Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell (18-1, 17 KO’s) steps in the ring with Cincinnati, Ohio journeyman Dione Craig (4-12-1, 1 KO). Having been forced to the final bell in his last outing (A 10-Round unanimous decision win over then unbeaten Teke Oruh) Abell is itching to get back on the KO track. Craig will certainly test the punching power of Phillips, as the Ohio native has only been stopped once in his professional career, and that was at the heavy hands of John Poore (20-2, 18 KO’s).

In a special undercard attraction, 2000 United States Olympian, Dante “Inferno” Craig (17-7-1, 13 KO’s) returns to the ring to take on West Virginia super-middleweight journeyman, James North (8-19-2, 3 KO’s). Craig, the younger brother of Dione, looks to resurrect his heavily touted professional career, after having been idle since suffering a knockout loss to the unbeaten, and heavy-handed, Michael Walker back in August, 2007.

Also slated for action, in a 4-round heavyweight bout, is the return of Billy Walker. The Newport/Ft Wright KY, KO artist returns to the ring after a 10-year layoff, to take on Science Hill, KY’s Alex Medina. When he left the ring at 6-1 5KO, Walker was known as a heavy hitter…10 years later Walker is aiming to prove that punching power is the last thing to go. Although 0-2-1, Medina has fought 3 fighters with an accumulative record of 68 rounds of boxing. Medina has not been off his feet, Walker needs to walk through Medina to prove his 42-year-old value and move on to his next step.

In other undercard action Kentucky fan-favorite, Corey “The Cobra” Phelps (11-3, 6 KO’s) takes on 58-fight professional veteran Carlos “Psycho” Bates (31-26, 13 KO’s), Oregon heavyweight Chris “The Hammer” Brammer (5-3, 4 KO’s) vs. TBA, and Raleigh, North Carolina light middleweight, Rashad Holloway (7-1, 4 KO’s) vs. TBA.
*All bouts are subject to change.

Munroe And Johanneson Join Forces

Posted on | March 4, 2008 | No Comments

Rendall Munroe, “The Fighting Dustman”, who challenges Kiko Martinez for his European super bantamweight title on March 7 at Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, has finished his hard training with four competitive sparring rounds with British super featherweight champion Carl Johanneson, who is also finishing up his own training ahead of his eagerly anticipated title defense against Commonwealth champion Kevin Mitchell on March 8 in London.

“I’ve driven up to Leeds three times in the last week for sparring with Carl Johanneson,” said Munroe. “Although it is an hour and a half each way and I’ve had to change my training program, it has well been worth it.

“Johanneson gives no quarter and takes no prisoners while sparring and I am tipping him to be successful this coming weekend, just as I believe I will be against Martinez. Don’t be surprised if Johanneson knocks out Mitchell. The sparring has been of great value to me; it has taught me what I need to know to defeat ‘The Bull’ from Spain”.

Chief support in Nottingham will feature the first defense of Commonwealth bantamweight champion Jason Booth, who takes on dangerous African Lante Addy. A young, iron-chinned warrior from Ghana, Addy has taken no chances and arrived in London this past weekend, where here will spend three days before driving up to Nottingham.

The card also sees young Belfast heavyweight Scott Belshaw looking to state his claim on the domestic scene. Added to this great value card is Celtic lightweight champion, Gary Buckland, who has signed a contract with Frank Maloney’s FTM Sports and will be looking for his new promoters to push him into the lightweight mix.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “The Bull vs. The Matador”, Rendall Munroe vs. European super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez, at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre on Friday, March 7, 2008. Tickets are priced at £75 and £35 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508. For any further press information please call 0208 467 7647.

Sky Sports will televise live on SS2 starting at 9:30PM.

Frank Maloney Promotions also announces “Northern Rock”, the first title defense by British super flyweight champion Chris Edwards, who faces Doncaster’s English champion Andy Bell at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England on Friday, March 28, 2008.

On Friday, April 18, 2008, Frank Maloney Promotions return to London when British light middle champion Gary Woolcombe faces the challenge of former titleholder Ryan Rhodes at historic York Hall on “Divine Retribution”. Also featured will be John McDermott and Pele Reid, who will argue the vacant English heavyweight title.

Tickets to these shows can be purchased by calling the Box Office 0871 226 1508 or by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com
