PROMOTER FRANK MALONEY SAYS WATCH OUT FOR SCOTT BELSHAW

Posted on | February 14, 2008 | No Comments

Maloney Bets On Belshaw

As the architect of Lennox Lewis’ meteoric rise to the undisputed world heavyweight title in the late 1990’s, brash promoter Frank Maloney knows a thing or two about the big men and doesn’t mince words when it comes to his take on the glamor division. “There are two categories in boxing; the heavyweights and then everyone else,” he said. “As the heavyweights go, so go the fortunes of the sport.”

The colorful Londoner is well aware that British fans will be looking for a heavyweight they can pin their hopes on when the current rotation of Matt Skelton, Danny Williams, Michael Sprott and Audley Harrison run their course and Maloney has rested his long term aspirations on the broad shoulders of big punching Irishman Scott Belshaw, who will appear on two of Maloney’s fight cards this spring.

At just 22 years of age, Belshaw has quickly amassed a record of seven wins against no losses since joining the professional ranks in October, 2006 but the promoter knows there’s still a long way to go in the maturation process of Belfast prospect.

“Scott has just made a successful return to the ring after an absence of seven months and he’ll be looking to make a statement in the division, but he’s still a young heavyweight who needs to be brought along,” said the promoter.

“Unlike other weight classes, a lot of heavyweights don’t mature until they’re in their late 20’s or early 30’s and provided Scott’s handled right, he could be a name to watch in the future.

One thing that is already evident about the skills of the 6 foot 7 inch Belshaw is that he can punch with definite authority. Of the seven opponents that have faced the Ulster heavyweight, only granite-jawed Yorkshireman Paul King has finished the fight on his feet.

With Maloney keen to continue Belshaw’s learning process, the towering youngster will make his next appearance in the squared circle on a Maloney show taking place at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, England on Friday, March 7 and then it’s right back to the grindstone at York Hall in London on Friday, April 18.

Should the spring campaign of Belshaw pan out, Maloney has plans for his heavyweight hopeful that should reach fruition in 2009 but the seasoned fight figure is taking a patient approach.

“My track record is good in the heavyweight division and this process has to be done the right way,” he said. “Even the most experienced amateurs coming into the pro game can fail miserably, as we saw with Audley Harrison.

“It’s my job to bring Scott along and he’s still a long way off from fighting for major honors. He’s still only in junior school at the moment and I’ll make his fights accordingly; I’m not going to rush him but we’ll be looking for domestic type titles over the next 18 months.”

Scott Belshaw will appear on the Frank Maloney event, ‘The Bull vs. The Matador’, headlined by Rendall Munroe’s European super bantamweight title challenge of reigning champion Kiko Martinez at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, England on Friday, March 7, 2008.

Chief support features Commonwealth bantamweight champion Jason Booth making his maiden title defense against steel-chinned challenger Lante Addy of Ghana.

Ex-IBO champion Brian Magee meets British Midlands Area titlist Tyrone Wright at light heavyweight and Derby’s flashy Scott Haywood takes a step up against Potteries powerhouse Gary Reid at light welter.

Leicester middleweight Kevin Concepcion and Leeds featherweight Danny Wallace are also scheduled to appear.

Tickets are priced at £75 and £35 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508. For any further press information please call 0208 467 7647.

Sky Sports will televise live on SS2 starting at 9:30PM.

Frank Maloney Promotions announce a new show featuring British super flyweight champion Chris Edwards defending his crown against English titlist Andy Bell at the Metrodome in Barnsley, England on Friday, March 28, 2008.

On Friday, April 18, 2008, Frank Maloney Promotions present British light middle champion Gary Woolcombe meeting the challenge of big punching southpaw and former titleholder Ryan Rhodes at York Hall in London. Also featured will be seasoned vet John McDermott and the explosive Pele Reid, who will argue the vacant English heavyweight title.

IFL VISITS NEW JERSEY ON APRIL 4

MATYUSHENKO, HIERON, FABIANO TO DEFEND TITLES AS INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE RETURNS TO NEW JERSEY ON APRIL 4

Miletich Fighting Systems, American Top Team and Renzo Gracie Academy, Midwest Combat Battle In Camp Matchups At Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

NEW YORK, February 13, 2008 – IFL titleholders Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (Belarus), Jay “The Thorobred” Hieron (Freeport, N.Y./Las Vegas) and Wagnney Fabiano (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) will defend their belts when the International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI) returns to the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., with a nine-bout card on Friday, April 4. In addition to the three Championship bouts, competition between camps will feature athletes from Renzo Gracie Academy, Midwest Combat, Miletich Fighting Systems, and American Top Team.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday, Feb. 25, and will be available at the IZOD Center Box Office (located at the Meadowlands), www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (201) 507-8900.

Of particular interest is the addition of Florida-based American Top Team, which is “outside” of the core IFL camps to compete under the new IFL format which encourages challenges from the top MMA camps across the world.

Matyushenko, who defected to the U.S. while a member of the Belarus national wrestling team in the early 1990’s, was the IFL’s first individual champion, capping an unbeaten 2007 by winning the light heavyweight title by defeating Alex Schoenauer last November in Chicago. On April 4, Matyushenko will battle Jamal “The Suit” Patterson (Jersey City, N.J.), a Colgate Univ. graduate who now serves as regional sales manager for an orthodontics company in addition to his MMA career.

Hieron, a Long Island native who will be fighting in front of a decidedly hometown crowd, knocked out Delson “Pe de Chumbo” Heleno (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in Connecticut in December to claim the welterweight crown. His opponent in New Jersey will be Mark Miller (Chicago), a former machine gunner in the U.S. Marines who was one of the big surprises at 170-lbs. last year in the IFL.

Fabiano is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert who used that skill to record five submissions, four of them in the first round, in a perfect 2007, culminating in a win over LC Davis (Kansas City, Mo.) in the featherweight championship in December. He takes on Shad Lierley (Seattle), a former collegiate conference wrestling champion at New York University who moves to 145-lbs. after impressing with two victories and a well-documented thrilling battle with Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (London, Ontario) last year.

“I like the local feel of this card,” said Bas Rutten, IFL Vice President, Fighter Operations. “In addition to three outstanding championship matchups, featuring fighters from New York and New Jersey, you have Renzo Gracie’s camp, which was the champion last year, Midwest Combat, which features our top fighters from the Chicago area, and great battles with the Miletich camp and American Top Team, which we are very excited to have on board.”

Among the intriguing matchups in the Miletich-ATT pairing are those between welterweights Rory Markham (Chicago) and Emyr Bussade (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and light heavyweights Mike Ciesnolevicz (Williamstown, Pa.) and Lew Polley (Coconut Creek, Fla.). L.C. Davis will also compete against a yet-to-be-determined featherweight opponent.

The Gracie-Midwest bouts include a rematch of last year’s exciting Deividas Taurosevicius (Lithuania) vs. Bart “Bartimus” Palaszewski (Wonderlake, Ill.) matchup. Delson Heleno will also fight at 170 lbs; his opponent is TBD.

Outside of the camp matchups, Chris Horodecki will battle a yet unnamed lightweight for a planned minimum nine-bout card.

QUINTANA UPSETS PAUL WILLIAMS

QUINTANA PUNISHES WILLIAMS
By Armando Cabrera

Paul “The Punisher” Williams came out bang up plus loses his WBO Welterweight belt to Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana on Saturday night in Temecula, Cal at Pechanga Resort & Casino in front of a near sell-out house.

Williams [33-1, 24 KO’s] making his first title defends against Quintana [25-1, 19 KO’s] was in shape for the fight, but Quintana had his own fight plan. He quickly lands a few good solid shots to put Williams, the champion on alert that he is hungry for the title.

Williams with his height and reach advantage seems to keep on walking into Quintana’s left hand punches. In the third round Quintana was working the body more with occasionally going upstairs to the head of Williams, who by this time was fighting from the outside trying to land his long range punches.

By the fifth round Williams the Punisher was getting a tastes of his own medicine…punishment that is as the shorter Quintana kept putting up a fight. Midway past the halfway points Williams started to win some of the rounds as he became more aggressive.

Both boxers were going toe to toe from round to round exciting the crowd. In the eight round Williams suffers a cut on his upper left side eye. The next round a cut on his right side eye has opened up. Now Williams is more combated in trying to finish the fight but Quintana just hangs in there absorbing the punches as well as counterpunching back.

Bleeding on both sides of the eyes in the eleventh round, Williams fought his heart out as the challenger Quintana slugged out with the champ to the final round. In the end the judges score it for Quintana winning a unanimous decision and becoming the new WBO welterweight champion.

Berto TKO Trabant in six

The Co-Main Event was a 10-round welterweight bout between Andre Berto [21-0,17 KO’s] versus Michael Trabant [43-3-1, 19 KO’s]

Berto began taking control of the fight early with his speed and punches. Trabant with his guard up protecting his face had limited possibility to punch making hard for him to land punches. The third round Trabant who show no action started showing sign of life by throwing punches. The faster to the draw was Berto outgunning him to the punches hurting Trabant toward the end of the round.

As the fight went on you could clearly see Berto was out punching, out boxing, and out styling Trabant and at the time its seems like a sparring session rather than an actual fight. The six round is where Berto picked up the pace, landing a flurry of punches stunning Trabant. Once the round ended Trabant’s corner advised the referee that their fighter cannot continue. Berto wins a 6th round TKO.

Lowther unanimous against Lopez

This 6-round junior welterweight bout between Omri Lowther [10-1, 8 KO’s] and Braulio Lopez [6-7-1, 2 KO’s] was an action pack from the start. Lopez proved he is a much better fighter than his record showed. He threw the first punch but Lowther read his opponent’s mind in no time and applied his boxing skills, hurting Lopez in the process of the first round with his speeding punches. Lopez quickly recovers to survive the round then settles down in the following round.

A cut opened up on Lopez’s right upper eye in the third round and his punches were landing with more accuracy. Lowther fighting more cautious from the outside with his speeding punches landing more as well.

What seemed to be an easy fight for Lowther turned out to be a brawl fight that went the distance. A low blow to Lopez in the fourth round allowed him a few moments of rest by the referee but the toe to toe battle soon continued. In the end this two fighters put on a great fight.

The three judges scored it [59-55] for Lowther winning a unanimous decision. I scored it [58-56] for Lowther.

Arreola takes care of Courser

In a special attraction bout local favorite fighter from Riverside, CA undefeated Cristobal “The Nightmares” Arreola [21-0, 21 KO’s] faced Cliff Courser [26-15-2, 14KO’s] for a 10-rounder in the heavyweight bout.

Arreola started to exchange early as Courser moved back managing to brush off the fire of punches coming at him. Courser is hurt but stands in front of Arreola only to receive more powerful punches; then Courser decides to take a knee that’s when referee halted the bout. Arreola improved to 21-0 winning a first round TKO.

Biggs Jr. KO Mullis in three

Raymond Biggs Jr. [7-0, 6 KO’s] faced Bryan Mullis [4-3-1, 2 KO’s] in a 4-rounder junior middleweight bout.

In a fast active fight, Mullis had landed several good punches when he was dropped by a clean punch by Biggs in the first round. Mulls moving forward with limited aggression in the third round, then Biggs let him have it with a solid hard punch sending him to the canvas. Mulls gets up but referee halts the bout. Biggs remains undefeated winning a 3rd round Knock out.

The fights were promoted by Goossen Tutor promotions, and HBO boxing after dark.

Pete Spratt MFC Sponsorship opportunity

Posted on | February 12, 2008 | No Comments

Pete THE SECRET WEAPON Spratt travels to Canada next week to take on Ryan Ford on “HDNet Fights Presents: Maximum Fighting Championship: Rags to Riches”

Spratt, known for his vicious knockouts – enters the contest after two consecutive wins. The most recent was a TKO of Tristan Yunker at “HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon”, and prior to that was a KO of TJ Waldburger at “HDNet Fights: Initiation Night”

“I fully expect to rip him a new one,” Spratt said. “I want to finish his career before it starts.”

The UFC veteran said he’s been training hard for this event – and since Ford is new to MMA, he doesn’t have an established style so, Spratt doesn’t know what to expect. In addition, returning to Canada doesn’t bring pleasant memories for Spratt. On previous trips, he’s been bogged down with paperwork, and experienced visa and border entry troubles. Not to mention, a loss to UFC Interim Welterweight Champion George St. Pierre in November 2003 in Canada.

Spratt said there is no comparison between his bout with St. Pierre and his upcoming match.

“George St. Pierre was good,” he said. “Ryan Ford ain’t no good.”

Ford carries an unblemished record into the ring. He most recently fought at MFC 14 where he finished off Mike Sorenson via TKO in the first minute of the second round.

Spratt has fought some of the best in the welterweight ranks during his eight-year career and has beaten such notables as Robbie Lawler and Rich Clementi. A devastating striker, Spratt was part of the cast of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4 – The Comeback and twice fought for Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights in 2007.

The bout will headline the “HDNet Fights Presents: Maximum Fighting Championship: Rags to Riches” event and will be broadcast LIVE Friday, February 22nd on HDNet.

DON’T MISS OUT!!!

There is still time to be included as one of Spratt’s promotional sponsors for this event. There are a few sponsor positions still available. Your company logo and/or website address can appear on Spratt’s fight shorts, Team Shirts, and Team Banner inside the ring.
