KARMAZIN DEDICATES FIGHT TO FALLEN NYPD OFFICERS

Posted on | January 9, 2008 | No Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 8, 2008

Former 154-Pound World Champion Boxer
Roman ‘Made in Hell’ Karmazin
Dedicates Madison Square Garden Fight
To Fallen NYPD Officers Timoshenko and Marshalik

Russian Fighter in Featured Bout on Trinidad vs. Jones Event;

National Pride and Respect Compels Him to Honor Fellow Compatriots

NEW YORK–When former IBF 154-pound world champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin, steps in the ring on January 19 at Madison Square Garden to defend his WBA Intercontinental super welterweight championship, he will be fighting for much more than himself. The Russian-born immigrant from St. Petersburg, who came to hte United States to pursue his dreams of becoming a world champion boxer, will dedicate his fight to slain New York City Police officers and fellow Russian immigrants Eugene Markshalik and Russell Timoshenko, who were killed in the line of duty in March and July 2007, respectively.

“These guys, Russell, Evgeni, they were immigrants like me,” Karmazin said. “Their families came here to realize happiness, to stand on their own two feet and to be proud of what they accomplished in life. That is why I am dedicating this fight in their memory?to make sure they and their bravery are not forgotten.”

Karmazin (36-2-1, 23 KOs), now living in Los Angeles, will defend his title against Alex Bunema (26-9-2, 14 KOs), from Kinshasa, Zaire, in a match featured on the HBO Pay-Per View telecast during the “Bring on the Titans” event headlined by Felix “Tito” Trinidad vs. Roy Jones Jr.

Karmizin realized his professional dream by capturing his first world title in 2005, winning a unanimous decision over champion Kassim Ouma. He is coming off a sterling third-round knockout over former two-time 154-pound world champion Alejandro “Terra” Garcia on Nov. 23 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Karmazin, 35, proved why he has always been considered one of the best junior middleweights in the world with an absolute destruction of Garcia where the Russian looked fantastic.

“As fighters, we take risks every time we step in the ring as it is hard to become champion and stay there when the competition is so strong,” Karmazin said. “But it is nothing compared to putting your life on the line to protect people and hope that you live to see another day.”

Karmazin will wear the name of the fallen officers, as well as a NYPD patch, on his robe and trunks when he enters the ring. Karmzin’s attorney Steven Bash hopes to get in touch with the families of both Russell and Eugene, and have Roman meet with them and personally invite them to the show.

“What we are doing, should be something that all people should do no matter their background and affiliations, and that is to honor the families of those who have sacrificed to make the lives of others better and safer,” said Bash, himself an immigrant from the former Soviet Union whose mother brought him over in her arms.
“Roman would like to show his great respect and appreciation for these two young men and fellow immigrants, Russel Timoshenko and Eugene Marshalik, whose unfortunate sacrifice is part of our ongoing freedom to succeed in the United States.”

TRINIDAD VS JONES

The event is being promoted by Don King Productions in association with Madison Square Garden. The Trinidad vs. Jones domestic pay-per-view telecast will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and is being produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View, available in more than 61 million pay-per-view homes. ELITEXC SIGNS EDDIE ALVAREZ TO A LONG-TERM CONTRACT

Posted on | January 8, 2008 | No Comments

Promising, Exciting Youngster Faces Ross Ebanez; Paul Daley Faces Sam Morgan
In New Co-Features Friday, Jan. 25, On ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series
At Trump Taj Mahal Atlantic City On SHOWTIME

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 8, 2008) ? Popular, flamboyant and charismatic former Bodog star, Eddie Alvarez, has signed a long-term contract with Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live division, EliteXC, and will co-headline on Friday, Jan. 25, at Trump Taj Mahal Atlantic City Hotel & Casino.

“This is another great signing for EliteXC and we?re thrilled to have Eddie with us,” said EliteXC Live Events President, Gary Shaw, who made the announcement today. “Eddie is definitely a promising kid with a great future, but what truly amazes me is his incredibly devoted fan base.

“He’s a phenomenon on the East Coast where he may fight on a show that draws 5,000 fans, but two-thirds of them are there to see him. He is like a rock star in some respects. In an around Philadelphia, he is as popular as Philly cheese steak and is the best thing they have going as far as mixed martial arts goes. I look forward to introducing him to the world on SHOWTIME.”

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

A two-time high school All-American wrestler, Alvarez (11-1), of Philadelphia, will make his EliteXC debut against Hawaiian favorite Ross “Da Boss” Ebanez (16-5), of Hilo, Hawaii, on ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The Alvarez-Ebanez fight, which will be contested at 170 pounds, replaces one slated to include Yves Edwards. In the other ShoXC co-feature, England?s Paul “Semtex”? Daley (16-6-2) will meet Sam “The Squeeze” Morgan (19-9) of Minneapolis, Minn., in a 160-pound bout.

Tickets for Jan. 25, starting at $40, are available at the Trump Taj Mahal box office and online at www.ticketmaster.com. The live card begins at 9 p.m.; doors open at 8.

In other SHOWTIME-televised fights, Bobby McMaster (8-2), of Boston, Mass., will try to regain his winning ways against the dangerous Bao Quach (11-8-1), of Irvine, Calif., at 150 pounds; “The Hawaiian Rocky Balboa,” Kala Kolohe Hose (4-1), of Honolulu, faces Fred Belleton (5-1), of Easton, Mass., at 185 pounds; and Julie Kedzie (9-6), of Greenwood, Ind., will attempt to make it four victories in a row when she battles Tonya Evinger (5-3), of Oak Grove, Maryland, at 140 pounds.

An explosive striker, Alvarez battled his way into MMA from the mean streets of Kensington, Pa., a blue-collar neighborhood near Philadelphia.

“Trouble seemed to find me and I wound up getting into fights on the street, so I decided to take it a little more seriously and really learn how to fight,” said Alvarez, who won his initial 10 MMA starts before losing his Bodog Fight welterweight title belt to Nick “The Goat” Thompson on a second-round knockout (strikes) on April 14, 2007.

Although he is not a true 170-pounder, Alvarez has coveted a rematch with his bitter rival. A return bout had been scheduled a couple times but after a February ’08 fight with Thompson fell out, a frustrated Alvarez, after weighing other offers, signed with EliteXC.

“We know Eddie wasn’t happy where he was, but I truly believe he’s found a home here with EliteXC,” Shaw said. “With Eddie eventually dropping down to his more natural weight class, 160 pounds, and with the fighters we have at 160, he has a chance to be a big star if he keeps winning.”

A top-notch wrestler who can move fast, sprawl, and shoot, Alvarez is also a non-stop puncher with quick hands ? he delivers uppercuts from every possible direction — quick feet and excellent head movement. He won his last start with a unanimous decision over Matt Lee on July 14, 2007. But while he dominated, Alvarez’ streak of winning inside the distance (eight knockouts, two decisions) ended.

Ebanez is a BJ Penn fighter unbeaten in his last three outings (2-0 with one no-contest) and 6-1 in his last seven (with the NC). Nicknamed “Da Boss” for his intimidating, aggressive style, Ebanez is an experienced, fan-friendly MMA fighter with solid skills. In his lone defeat since March ’06, Ebanez lost to Mike Pyle on the historic EliteXC “DESTINY” fight card on Feb. 10, 2007, on SHOWTIME.

Scheduled non-televised Jan. 25 fights include: Zach Makovsky (3-0), of Philadelphia, vs. Wilson Reis (2-0), of Philadelphia, at 140; James “Binky” Jones (4-5), of Baltimore, Md., vs., Mark Getto (1-3-1), of Philadelphia, at 150; Sergio Vinagre (2-1), of New Jersey, vs. Brett Linebarger (2-1), of New Jersey, at 170; Joe Shilling (debut), of Los Angeles, vs. Matt Makowski (1-0), of Philadelphia, at 170; and Doug Gordon (6-4), of New Jersey, vs. an opponent to be determined, at 170.

The fights are scheduled for three, 5-minutes rounds with the exception of Kedzie-Evinger, which is slated for three, 3-minute rounds.

Fights for 31st Ballroom Boxing Card Taking Shape

Posted on | January 8, 2008 | No Comments

January 8th, 2008

“The Persecutor” Mike Paschall (15-0-1) will be featured in an 8 round Super Middleweight battle against Andre “Da Heat” Hemphill (6-6-2). Don’t let the record deceive, “Da Heat” has only fought two opponents with losing records; both early in his career. His opponents have a combined record of 70-14.

The co-feature matches “The Arsenal” Ishmail Arvin (14-1-3) against Jesse Orta (7-11-1). Jesse is another guy with an upside down record but who comes to fight.

It’s important when looking at fights to look at the records to see how, when, and where the fights to place. There are plenty of fighters with pretty records against average opponents, while in the same, there are even more guys that can flat out fight that have less appealing records. When making fights these things must and are being taking into account.

One of the Beltway’s hottest prospects Bayan Jargal (5-0-1) will meet Eric Washington (2-1).

New to the scene heavyweight Askia Snyder (2-0) will really step up to meet Jonathon Felton (5-9). Anyone who has seen Jonathon knows he can flat out roll.

There will be another pro fight or two added soon as well and 3 amateur fights to kick off the evening.

Tickets are on sale at Michael’s by calling 410-766-7474.

THIS FIGHT JUST KHAN’T WAIT

Posted on | January 8, 2008 | No Comments

For Immediate Release
England – January 8, 2007

KHAN’T WAIT
“Be a man Amir or my name for you will be the Bolton Bottler!”

? Thaxton vs Khan for the prestigious British & Commonwealth Titles
? Purse bids to be held Wednesday 9th January 2008 at Midday at the British Boxing Board of Control.
? One Day to go and I’m still counting!

John Thaxton would just like to make it clear that tomorrow’s purse bid has now been made for both the British and Commonwealth titles.

John goes on to explain:

“Where I’m British Champion, I’m also mandatory for Khan’s Commonwealth title, so the board and commonwealth council have been really fare and made this a 50/50 split with both titles on the line. If Khan bottles it and pulls out of this purse bid and still continues to fight on February 2nd then not only will he lose his right to fight for the prestigious British Title, he should definitely be stripped of his Commonwealth Title.”

“I believe that the recent major upsurge in British boxing is down to British boxers, fighting for traditional belts like the British and Commonwealth titles. I hope Khan does not do these titles a disservice and start fighting for interalphabetty titles. After calling me out and disrespecting me I believe Amir and his team know that in a 12 round fight I’m bound to catch him clean, knock him spark out and it will be curtains Khan.”

“I hope that ITV do the right thing in my opinion and insist on traditional titles and follow a similar policy that SKY has implemented which has obviously worked very well for British boxing.”

Jon Thaxton ? British Lightweight Champion

Please see below official Championship Circular issued by the British Boxing Board of Control 3rd January 2008.

The Commonwealth Boxing Council has ruled that the British Boxing Board of Control bid can be accepted as a Commonwealth Boxing Council bid as well.

2. Notice has been given by Promoter Frank Warren that Commonwealth Champion Amir Khan is scheduled to take part in a contest at the Excel Arena, London on 2nd February 2008. Accordingly the contest cannot take place prior to the 2nd March 2008 but must take place by the end of April 2008.
