PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
WBO 130 POUND CHAMP JOAN GUZMAN
CHALLENGER HUMBERTO SOTO
Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007,
Old Homestead Restaurant, New York City
After nearly one year of inactivity, WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs) makes his highly anticipated return to the ring when he battles the veteran Humberto Soto (43-5-2, 27 KOs) on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, N.J., on HBO “Boxing After Dark” at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The 12-round championship bout is for Guzman’s WBO junior lightweight title. The fight is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Top Rank. Guzman and Soto addressed the media in the promotions’ final press conference Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Old Homestead Restaurant in New York City. Here is what they had to say:
JOAN GUZMAN
“I am anxious and ready to get in the ring. I am very happy and excited and it’s my time now. Soto is in the same position as me. He’s coming up like I am looking for the big fights. We hold the key for each other
“I have spent the last four months training in Las Vegas and the only thing on my mind during camp has been this fight.
“I know I am a dangerous fighter. No one wants to fight me either. I keep wining titles but nobody wanted to fight me at 126 (lbs.), and now I move up in weight and won title at 130 pounds. I won’t run away from anyone. I’ve said it time and time again that I will fight anyone, anywhere.
“Soto presents a tough challenge but I feel I have what it takes to beat him. I feel like I can beat any 130 pound fighter out there.
“Its going to be a great show and also I am glad the Dominicans will be able to see me on regular television on HBO.
“We are both hungry fighters who want to show the boxing world what they’ve got. Every fight is emotional, but for whatever reason, the emotional level for this fight has been kicked up a few levels.”
“Soto is a powerful fighter coming forward. The fans are going to see a great fight I think it is going to be like Leonard and Duran (Soto interjected “Camacho vs Chavez”.) Guzman responded “Don’t forget who’s Champ.”
HUMBERTO SOTO
“I am a man of few words. I just want to thank everyone for being here today at the final press conference.
“We’re ready for a great battle with Guzman. Why I haven’t gotten the opportunity before I don t know but there’s a lot of opportunity now. I know there’s a lot of guys are there way out and the new generation is here. We want to show the new generation just as good as the old with a great fight.
“A lot of people have asked why I haven’t fought someone like Guzman before. This division is retiring a lot of its legends and the new ones need to step up.
“Guzman is a great fighter. He is a lot of skills and as far as I am concerned, he maybe the best 130-pound fighter out there.
“I love a challenge and that’s why I took this fight. I want to be world champion.
“This is my second opportunity against a Undefeated fighter. A lot of people didn’t expect me to beat Rocky Juarez the first time. He had Olympic credentials and no one gave me a shot, but I proved everyone wrong. Maybe Guzman is the favorite for this fight, but that doesn’t mean much to me because I have been scratched off before and I’ve succeeded.”
The November 17 HBO Boxing After Dark telecast will be headlined by WBO World Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman defending his title against former WBC Interim Featherweight Champion Humberto Soto, while the telcast’s co-feature bout will include undefeated 2004 Olympian Abner Mares making his HBO debut in a bantamweight fight against Argentinean Damian Marchiano. The event, which isbeing promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Top Rank Inc., and will air live from Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, NJ, will air on HBO’s Boxing After Dark starting at 9:45 PM ET/PT.
Tickets for this event are priced at $225, $175, $145, $115, $95, $75 and $45 are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 866-900-4TIX (4849) or online at www.theborgata.com.

Savarese Joins Ring Promotions
NEW YORK (November 14, 2007) – Former world heavyweight contender Lou Savarese has become a partner in New York City-based Ring Promotions, joining former New York boxing commissioners, Bob Duffy and Tony Mazzarella.
Savarese was a two-time New York State Golden Gloves super heavyweight champion, winning the novice division in 1985 and defeating Alex Stewart the following year in the finals. In 1987, Lou was scheduled to fight future world champion Riddick Bowe in the finals, but Savarese was injured and unable to box.
As a pro, Savarese won his first 36 fights, 46 of 53 (38 KOs) during his 18-year career, which ended this past June with a 10-round loss by decision to Evander Holyfield. Lou’s 36th straight win was a seventh-round TKO of highly-touted Buster Mathis, Jr. (21-1) for the USBA heavyweight title in 1996. “Big Lou” then dropped a 12-round decision to George Foreman for the WBU crown, bounced back with a sensational fist-round knockout of Buster Douglas for the IBA belt, and rose from the canvas to knockoff previously unbeaten Lance “Mount” Whitaker.
“Lou Savarese is one of he most honest, respected boxers to ever come out of New York City,” Duffy said. “He’s a former world-class fighter with integrity who has always been good for boxing. We’re very happy that Lou’s now part of Ring Promotions. Boxing has been good to Lou and he wants to see the sport grow and make things better for everybody.”
Ring Promotions and Gotham Boxing, will co-promote “Holiday Hits” on December 13 at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, showcasing some of the Big Apple’s best young fighters including 3-time New York Golden Gloves champion and WBC rated No. 18 Bronx lightweight Jorge “The Truth” Teron (18-0-1, 11 KOs), in his first scheduled 10-round fight; Brooklyn middleweight Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (15-0, 12 KOs), New York State lightweight champion Freddy Soto (9-3-2, 5 KOs), also fighting out of the Bronx, and Newburgh heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (4-0, 2 KOs), 2-time New York Golden Gloves champion.

“HE’S COMING TO AMERICA! . . HE’S COMING TO AMERICA!”
RICKY “HIT MAN” HATTON SET TO TOUCH DOWN ON AMERICAN SOIL NOVEMBER 23 AS HE BEGINS FINAL PREPARATION FOR DECEMBER 8 MEGA-FIGHT AGAINST FLOYD MAYWEATHER AT MGM GRAND
LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW
LAS VEGAS, NV (November 14, 2007) . . . Ricky Hatton, nearing the end of his 13th week of training camp in Manchester, England, is starting to pack his bags as there are only 10 days left before he leaves his hometown and heads to Las Vegas to set up the final weeks of preparation for his December 8 mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather at MGM Grand. The fight will be broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Hatton estimated that he has experienced the most intense training camp ever training seven days per week rotating between sparring, road-work and weight training. “Without a doubt sparring is the most important part of my training,” said Hatton. “It allows me to judge my timing and practice maneuvers and tactics.”
In addition to his extremely hard work in the gym, Hatton has paid close attention to his weight and diet. Reports from camp estimate that Hatton is close to fighting weight and feeling good. “Dieting has got to be the worst part of training for fights,” said Hatton. “My favorite food is Chinese, but I have to stay away from the rice and Chinese sauces during training camp.” Hatton’s diet is supervised by his long-time strength and conditioning trainer Kerry Kayes.
Promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions, and sponsored by Rock Star Energy Drink, Tecate Beer and Southwest Airlines, “UNDEFEATED” is headlined by the welterweight championship bout between Mayweather and Hatton.
Closed circuit tickets, priced at $50, are still available and can be purchased at MGM MIRAGE properties’ box office outlets or by phone with a major credit card at 866-799-7711. For MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay venues, tickets also are available by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 702-474-4000. Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person and all seats are general admission.
The Mayweather vs. Hatton pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $54.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 61 million pay-per-view homes.
