FORMER CONTENDERS BATTLE IT OUT
Posted on | August 28, 2007 | No Comments
Los Angeles 8/24/2007
WBC CABOFE middleweight champion Miguel Espino, of North Hollywood Ca, puts his title on the line against former “Contender” season one classmate, Juan De La Rosa, as they both square off in a 10 round main event, September 21st 2007, at the Double Tree Hotel in Bakersfield Ca. Manny Cota of Cota Boxing Promotions is ecstatic about promoting the clash between the former “Contender” stars, and believes this bout has all the elements for a classic showdown as he stated, “Matchmaker Benki Cantua help put this fight together and I’m excited about this bout being that they’re both young, hungry, warriors. Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard did a great job showcasing these talented fighters in season one, and I plan to do the same with this fight. Although both have moved on from the “Contender” series, I do believe the public will inquire to see who wins this fight, as well as the media. Being that the fight will be a ten round bout, those in attendance will get to see the real talents of both Espino and De La Rosa.
Espino, who recently got the word that he’s fighting a fellow member of the show, mentioned, “This is a great fight for the fans. We both throw a lot of punches, so it will be an exciting bout. Juan is a real good guy. We were on opposite teams during the show, but we got along. Although I will do my best to stop him, it’s not personal, just business.
De La Rosa, who will attempt to put a stop to Miguel’s 7 fight winning streak and take his WBC CABOFE belt, declared, “Like every other fight I come for the victory. He has something that I want and I’m sure he feels the same way. We’re both going out there to give it our best and the best man is going to win.”
This bout is promoted by Cota Boxing Promotions. Tickets priced at $50 (ringside) $35 (general) can be purchased by calling (818) 274-7129.

This will be Juan Manuel Marquez’s first defense since winning the title from Marco Antonio Barrera earlier this year. Marquez is known as one of boxing’s best, pound for pound fighters and has thrilled fans for over 14 years. Rocky Juarez is a hard working strategic and tactical brawler who has the confidence to beat a very accurate, talented and experienced boxer in Marquez. This fight is a compelling match-up of ring experience and desire.
Marquez was born in Mexico City and is one of eight children whose father was an ex-pro boxer with 35 fights to his credit. Entering the gym for the first time at the age of eight, Juan and his brother, current bantamweight world champion Rafael, quickly took to the sweet science, with his boxing career starting in amateur tournaments at age 13. With his brother’s recent ring loss to Israel Vasquez, Marquez is planning on winning this not only for his Mexican countrymen, but more importantly, for his entire family .
Juarez is a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and has been involved in some tough battles in the past, including two hard fought wars against Marco Antonio Barrera. But most importantly he is on a quest to beat Marquez for his 91 year old grandfather who has been by his side and in the gym with him throughout his entire career. Juarez will be fighting to prove to himself, his grandfather and his fans that he is a true world champion.

Kassim Ouma looks to end Sergio Mora’s “15 minutes of fame” and Mora looks to prove he is a legitimate fighter and put his Contender days behind him, solidifying his unbeaten record. An interesting battle in the making—a former child-soldier for a Ugandan Army, Kassim Ouma’s story is well known (and well respected) in the boxing community. Ouma, the former junior middleweight champion will take on The Contender’s first season winner and undefeated Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora in what looks to be a fast-paced fight, with many punches thrown.
In fact, Ouma holds the Compubox record for most punches landed in a junior middleweight title fight with an amazing 502. Don’t let that stat fool you into thinking this will be a lopsided fight though; Mora made himself a household name by his fighting style of a high-volume of punches thrown. This looks to be a true slugfest. Jermain Taylor’s (who faced both fighters) take on the fight? Ouma lost to Taylor in his last fight and Taylor beat Mora in the 2000 Olympic trial finals. Also, Mora declined a fight on March 15, 2007 vs Taylor.

Robert Guerrero is the two-time and current featherweight champion of the world. He will defend his title against a game Martin Honorio, who steps in on short notice for the chance to realize his dream of becoming a world champion. Guerrero wants to prove he can defend and keep the title that he traveled overseas to regain. Guererro also has a fight pattern of rebounding after setbacks. He is now trying to set a new course by staying on top of the game. Martin Honorio, coming off a 12 round split decision over Joe Morales, will look to prove that he is the bigger stronger fighter that can make “The Ghost” disappear for once and for all.
When Martin Honorio began to box, he didn’t have dreams of glory or world titles dancing in his head, he just wanted to learn how to defend himself from the daily beatings he endured in the crime-infested streets of Iztapalapa, Mexico. Since turning pro in 1999, Honorio has had a very exciting career and over time he has impressed insiders with his gritty style and his ability to lift his 5’10” frame (huge for a featherweight) from the canvas to win bouts.
THE COMEBACK

Both fighters are at a momentous point in their careers. Francisco Bojado is coming back after a break from the sport and at the end of his “first” career that was failed by ring loss and weight gain. He is a rejuvenated, lesson-learned fighter and he knows this time around it’s different. Steve Forbes was known as a competitor even before his days as a “talent” on the Contender. Many felt his recent loss to NABF Champion Demetrius Hopkins was an unfair decision. He knows he has to win this one and re-establish himself as a legitimate contender. This fight will act as a catalyst, slinging the winner forward in their career and getting them back on track for a championship run. Whoever wins this fight will start on his way to a “comeback.”
The “Fireworks” pay-per-view telecast featuring Marquez vs. Juarez will take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF HATTON VS. MAYWEATHER
Posted on | August 27, 2007 | 3 Comments
THINK FLOYD WILL WASTE HATTON? THINK AGAIN!
BY: Patrick McElligott
The final four months of 2007 will provide boxing fans with many outstanding fights. Some, like the Maskaev vs Peter match, will help determine the future of a division. Others, such as the recently postponed Vargas vs
Mayorga fight, are attractive as tributes to warriors long past their primes. All in all, from September to December, it is going to be a great time to be a boxing fan.
In the next few weeks, it will be fun to take a closer look at a number of these outstanding contests, and to speculate on what factors will play the most important role in determining the outcomes. Two things will come into focus: First, that styles make fights; and second, that what the great Cus D’Amato called “the intangibles” are very real. And what better “super fight” to illustrate that could we ask for, than the December 8 contest
between Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and Ricky Hatton?
Mayweather is widely recognized as the pound-for-pound best in the sport today. He is at his peak today. Hatton had been considered a tough potential opponent for him, until his May 2006 fight with Luis Collazo. But since then, most experts have concluded Mayweather would easily defeat the rugged Englishman. In fact, one television personality has said that Floyd should fight him before someone else stops Hatton on cuts.
This is a case of where the “smart money” is wrong. Read this with an open mind, and remember that you heard this on Fight News Unlimited first.
Mayweather is indeed in his prime. I think he is the most gifted athlete –in any sport – of this generation. And he should beat Ricky Hatton, but it is not a given. Ricky Hatton actually has a greater chance of defeating
Mayweather than any other fighter in the welterweight classes.
Let’s take a look at the historical example of Sugar Ray Robinson, the man that many believe to be the greatest fighter ever to lace on a boxing glove.
And let’s look at Ray in the context of styles and intangibles.
Ray went 85-0 as an amateur. He had 69 KOs in those 85 fights. Still, I remember the story of Steve Kukol, an amateur boxer from Johnson City, one of the neighborhoods where my family boxed for generations.
Steve fought Ray four times, and these are 25% of Robinson’s amateur decisions. Steve also played a role in one of Ray’s trainer George Gainford’s decisions.
Steve had a lead over Ray in their first war, in the Madison Square Garden. But Ray dropped Steve in the final minute for a 9-count, and pulled out the victory in this semi-finals bout in the Eastern Golden Gloves. The two then became sparring partners for a two week period. Then, they fought more 5-round battles in Syracuse and Watertown. In their last match, many people believed Steve deserved the decision. It was, as far as I know, the only controversial win in Ray’s amateur career.
Eight days before his pro debut, Robinson was scheduled for a high profile last amateur match at the Garden. But that afternoon, when the promoters said it would be against Kukol, Gainford said no. “Kukol knows Ray’s style too good – he always makes Ray look bad,” he told reporters.
Ray told Steve that he was willing to fight him, but that he had to obey his trainer’s decision. And that’s the difference between being an amateur star and a professional champion – because everyone in the Mayweather camp knows that Hatton is the single toughest fight that Mayweather could pick today.
To illustrate why, we will move ahead in Ray Robinson’s career, to when he fought two wars with an onion farmer from rural upstate New York.
The first fight between Robinson and Carmen Basilio was Ring magazine’s Fight of the Year in 1957; their rematch was the Fight of the Year in 1958.
When we read the reports from those days, or even watch the films of those wars, we appreciate why. Clearly, Carmen’s style presented problems for Ray.
More, when we watch the recent interviews with Basilio on ESPN-Classic, we begin to get a feel for the intangibles. Carmen had attempted to introduce his wife to Ray in New York City, and Robinson insulted him. The intensity of Carmen Basilio’s dislike for Robinson is clear decades later, even after Ray’s death. It isn’t the same type of bitterness that Joe Frazier expresses towards Ali; instead, but it is passionate.
Ray had the physical advantages: he was taller, heavier, and had a longer reach. He was a more gifted boxer, starting with his jab, his ability to deliver combinations from any angle, and his extraordinary defensive skills.
Carmen was considered easy to hit, because he frequently failed to jab or to bob and weave while coming straightat an opponent. His face often showed the results of getting hit, and he had lost to lesser fighters than the great Ray Robinson.
But Carmen Basilio beat Robinson convincingly in the first fight, and lost a split-decision in the return match. How did this happen? Styles make fights.
Why did it happen? The intangibles came into play.
Even the people who dislike Floyd Mayweather recognize that he has uncanny defensive skills. His fights against warriors like Zab Judah and Oscar De La Hoya showed that. But he also has offensive skills that are often overlooked. These were displayed in his knockout victories over Diego Corrales and Phillip Nduo.
Mayweather also showed a rate of accuracy against Arturo Gatti that was similar to Muhammad Ali’s when he butchered Cleveland “Big Cat” Williams. Before their fight, Floyd had called Gatti a “C+ fighter.” Afterwards, he
explained that he had only said that to “sell tickets.” He has said similar things about Ricky Hatton, but to be frank, he does not need to in order to sell any tickets. There are other issues coming into play.
Hatton did not look his best in either the Collazo or Urango fights. But that isn’t the Ricky Hatton that will step into the ring with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. It would be an error to use those fights alone to measure him. Instead, let’s consider two more important fights: his devastating victories over Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo. His emotional intensity translated into physical force against Tszyu, and the great champion’s reign ended on his stool, with a fractured cheekbone, when he could not answer the bell for the final round.
The tough Castillo was counted out after taking a vicious left hook to the liver. Hatton’s punch had broke four of Castillo’s ribs. That is the type of passion and intensity that makes Ricky Hatton the most dangerous opponent Floyd Mayweather could fight.
Mayweather vs Hatton is not the rubber match of Robinson and Basilio. But it is as close to it as this generation will ever get.

Bobby Gunn Destroys Benito Fernandez!

For Immediate Release
World ranked Cruiserweight Bobby Gunn 18-3 (15 KO’s) earned his second straight knockout victory by taking out veteran Benito Fernandez 19-15 (6 KO’s) in the second round of their scheduled ten round contest. Gunn put Fernandez down for the count with a straight right hand in the main event of Saturday’s card which was held at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia. Gunn, who initially weighed in 183 lbs was once again forced to put on weight due to disapproval by the commission as Benito Fernandez stepped on the scale at 203 lbs. Gunn went to a local buffet then came back onto the scale with jeans, boots, a walkman, and change in his pocket which enabled him to weigh in at an unnatural 201 lbs.
“I felt good going into the fight and I used the first round to feel him out. I was not very familiar with him since he was a last minute replacement” said the former IBA Cruiserweight king. “As soon as I hit him with the straight right, I knew the fight was over. Antonio Tarver’s people are looking for a fight and they need to look no further then The Gunn”!
Clips from the fight can be seen at youtube.com/watch?v=M3uycuRhzRg. Plans for Gunn’s next fight will be announced shortly.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“JOE BOXER’’ VALENZUELA GETS IN THE LAST WORD,
CONVINCINGLY DEFEATS “KRAZY HORSE’’ BENNETT
IN FIRST ROUND ON SHOXC: ELITE CHALLENGER SERIES
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Saturday, Aug. 25, at 11 p.m. ET/ 8:00PT on SHOWTIME
Vicksburg Conventon Center, Vicksburg, Mississippi
VICKSBURG, Miss. (Aug. 26, 2007) – For two agonizing, long years, Victor “Joe Boxer” Valenzuela waited to get fast-talking, loud-mouth Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett back in the cage.
It was worth the wait.
In an impressive performance, Valenzuela (6-2-2) rallied from an early knockdown to register a stunning 3:23 first-round submission (tap out due to strikes) over Bennett (18-14-2) of Ocala, Fla., in their highly anticipated grudge rematch in the main event on ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series Saturday.
EliteXC presented the event from the Vicksburg Convention Center. It aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
“This is as good as it gets,’’ said a jubilant Valenzuela. “I shut the ‘Horse’ up and then shut him down and out. This was vindication for me like you would not believe.”
“It doesn’t get any more personal for me than this. I am on cloud nine. All I heard from the time we fought our first fight (Aug. 5, 2005) was what he was going to do to me in the rematch.”
“I showed him and the world what I am all about. I dealt with adversity and kept my composure after going down. I was stunned but not hurt. I weathered the storm and the best he had to offer.”
“I showed the heart of a champion. Champions get up.’’
Bennett (http://krazyhorse.proelite.com/) dropped Valenzuela in the bout’s early moments, but “Joe Boxer’’ (http://joeboxer.proelite.com/) rebounded to score two knockdowns of his own. Moments after the last knockdown, the abbreviated but exciting fight was over.
“I knew he was through and had nothing left after his barrage of punches,’’ Valenzuela said. “I proved I could talk the talk. This is just the greatest feeling in the world.’’
A disconsolate Bennett had little to say afterward. He made no excuses. “I should have not been in such a hurry after I knocked him down. I should have allowed him to get up. Instead, I got a little excited and maybe punched myself out.”

SHOXC: ELITE CHALLENGER SERIES – Aug. 25, 2007
“I tip my hat to ‘Joe Boxer.’ He was the better man tonight. But that doesn’t mean I respect him. Sure, he beat me, but that’s all he did.’’
In the co-feature of a live two-hour telecast that included five competitive, action-packed, crowd-pleasing fights between determined, offensive-minded fighters, Seth “The Dr.’’ Kleinbeck (8-3), of Stuttgart, Ark., knocked out Jaime Jara (16-6) of North Highlands, Calif., with a picture-perfect left-right combination at 4:59 of round two.
“There was no doubt that the fight was over,” Kleinbeck (http://sethkleinbeck.proelite.com/) said. “I caught him perfectly. This is probably my best win and I am obviously very happy. I was surprised he tried to box for as long as he did. I figured he would be trying to take me down. I kicked him so hard I think I might have broken my left foot. Right now it hurts a lot.”
Jara (http://jaimejara.proelite.com/), who lost for the first time in three years, said, “You have to give him a lot of credit. He is one really tough dude. I came to win. I am confident in everything I do, but he had me seeing the lights. I can’t complain about the stoppage. Losing is a new experience to me, but I’ll be back.”
Each of the athletes in the televised bouts was presented with a plaque after their fights.
In a performance that earned him “EliteXC Fighter of the Night” honors, Jon Murphy scored a spectacular second-round knockout over David Huckaba.
Murphy (4-2), of Minersville, Penn., dropped Huckaba (5-2) of Sacramento, Calif., with a series of punches, the most damaging of which were four vicious right hands.
“This is the greatest feeling and by far my biggest win,” said Murphy. “I really appreciate EliteXC giving me this opportunity. I know a lot of people were watching and pulling for me.”
“I was surprised he stayed up as long as he did, but he was really strong. Huckaba is an iron worker and all the iron workers I know are really strong and tough whether they are in training or not.”
Offered Huckaba: “I am very disappointed. I let a lot of people down tonight.”
In a tactical fight in which both warriors gave their best, Hector Urbina (9-3), of Chicago, Ill., registered a close, unanimous decision over Ray Lizama (8-6) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
“This was a new experience for me,” said Urbina who triumphed by the scores of 29-28 on the three judges’ scorecards. “It was the first time I have ever gone three rounds.”
“Usually my fights are over in one round. Overall I am very happy. In some ways, I out-struck the striker. I think I might have been able to finish him if I had been in better shape.”
Said Lizama: “I like to fight guys who stand up in bang. That’s my game. I want knockouts. With this guy, I had to concentrate more on defense. I thought the decision could have gone either way, but I can’t complain. When you leave it in the hands of hands of the judges, anything can happen.”

SHOXC: ELITE CHALLENGER SERIES – Aug. 25, 2007
In the opening bout of the telecast, promising, once-beaten middleweight Umar Love dealt previously undefeated Brendan Tierney his first loss by submission (choke hold) at 4:08 in the first round. Love, of High Desert, Calif., improved to 6-1 while Tierney, of Tempe, Ariz., fell to 5-1.
“I am always happy, but never satisfied.” Love said, “There is a lot of work to be done. This was a good win for me and I want to continue to build on it. Once I got comfortable I was able to do what I wanted to do. It’s like a chess match in there, as a tactician I always try to stay one step ahead.”
Said Tierney, “For a minute it looked OK. He was a little stronger than I thought he would be. I don’t make excuses, but I felt a little weak.”
EliteXC announcer Mauro Ranallo called the action from cage side with The Fight Professor, Stephen Quadros serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoXC is David Dinkins, Jr. with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
EliteXC will make a gigantic wave when it returns to SHOWTIME on Saturday, Sept. 15 from Blaisdell Arena in Oahu, Hawaii. It is the biggest MMA event in the history of the 50th state.
In an excellent main event, the first EliteXC champion, Murilo “Ninja” Rua will make his initial middleweight title defense against always-dangerous ICON Sport titlist, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler.
One of the top fighters pound for pound in MMA, the well-regarded Nick Diaz will make his anxiously awaited EliteXC debut and first start in six months when he faces Hawaiian star Mike Aina in the semi-main event.
In other televised bouts, streaking top-10 welterweight Jake Shields meets Renato “Charuto” Verissimo; The Golden Girl of MMA, sexy Gina Carano will face tough-talking Tonya Evinger in a 140- pound fight and Joey Villasenor will be opposed by Riki Fukuda at 185 pounds in the other televised bouts.
With the exception of “Ninja”-Lawler, which is scheduled for five, 5-minute rounds, the televised bouts are slated for three, 5-minute rounds.

Berto trains out of Tigers World of Martial Arts located in Winter Haven Florida and comes from a strong family of well rounded fighters. His father and trainer Dieseul Berto is a former Pride and UFC fighter, his brother Andre is a 2004 Olympic boxer who has since turned professional with an undefeated record of 19-0, and brother Cleveland is a Florida state wrestling champion and also placed second in the National tournament.
Recently an unprecedented sporting event occurred which saw Edson fighting in a nationally televised Showtime event the same night that Andre was boxing on ESPN. The fact that the strong knit Berto Gamily was split on opposite sides of the country may have contributed to Edson’s sole ProElite loss.
Also featured on the card will be Chris Holder, a St. Petersburg standout wrestler from The Grind who will be taking on Chino Duran and Jack “The Giant Killer” Murphy, a local favorite who will be making his return back to RFC for a Featherweight contention.
Other undefeated RFC fighters include: Ralph Garcia, J Lee, James Austin, Miguel Gonzalez and Shamal McMillian.
RFC owner, Jason Freyre says “This is our ninth event in Tampa Bay and we will continue to give our thousands of fans the quality and entertainment value they have come to expect from RFC. Accordingly we are proud to announce that there will be a special Guest Appearance by UFC Lightweight Champion Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk who will be signing autographs from 6:30 to 7:30 so be there early to meet the Muscle Shark!”
The event will be taped for a future broadcast.
