When the Super Six began, neither undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Andre Ward(24-0, 13 KOs), of Oakland, Calif., nor his World Boxing Council (WBC) counterpart, Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KOs), of Nottingham,England, were among the favorites.

But through career-defining fights and remarkable drama both in and out of the ring, Ward and Froch have persevered and emerged as prominent members of boxing’s exclusive Pound-for-Pound list and are now poised for global stardom.

The Super Six World Boxing Classic was conceived by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®, to match the best fighters in a deep, talent-laden division in a series of fights to see who would come out on top. Now, Ward and Froch are just one victory away from earning the distinction of being the undisputed No. 1 super middleweight in the world.

“I can’t think of two more deserving men than Andre and Carl to represent this tournament in the Final with a chance for one of them to hoist high the inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup,” said Hershman. “The two survived the gauntlet – fighting one elite athlete after another – and rightfully deserve the division’s top billing.

The winner of the 12-rounder will claim super middleweight supremacy, both world championship belts, The Ring magazine championship and the coveted Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup.

“Going into a fight of this magnitude, I expect the toughest fight of my career,” said Ward.

Froch echoed Ward’s comments regarding the enormity of the Super Six Final. “Not only is it for two world titles, but it’s for the tournament trophy and The Ring belt is also on the line,” said the WBC champion. “It makes this the biggest and the most prestigious fight to happen for as far back as I can remember.

“This has been a fantastic tournament. It has produced some amazing fights in our division, fights that certainly would not have happened otherwise. For the Final, we have a great fight between two superior athletes.”

Ward said, “The Super Six has given me the opportunity to fight the best and, so far, I’ve been fortunate to beat the best. It’s also given me the chance to do what I’ve always wanted to do and that’s become undisputed champion. This fight brings me closer.

“I salute SHOWTIME and everyone involved for allowing me into this tournament. We’ve all put our nose to the ground, and we’re still standing and heading to a grand finale. I’m excited to be part of it.”

The last boxer from the United States to capture an Olympic Games gold medal, the six-foot one, 27-year-old Ward won the WBA belt by upsetting Super Six co-favorite Mikkel Kessler with an impressive 11th-round technical decision in Group Stage 1. Ward retained the crown with lopsided 12-round unanimous decisions over Allan Green, Sakio Bika and, most recently,Arthur Abraham (last May 14) in a Super Six Semifinal. Ward will be making his fourth defense against Froch.

Coming into the tournament off a 12th-round TKO over Jermain Taylor, Froch took a 12-round split decision over Andre Dirrell in Group Stage 1. The 33-year-old Froch then lost the WBC belt on a close decision to Kessler in a thrilling Fight of the Year candidate in Group Stage 2, but regained it in his subsequent Super Six start when, after an eye injury sidelined Kessler and forced him to relinquish the belt, he masterfully outclassed a determined Abraham en route to a unanimous decision. Froch defended his strap and secured a berth in the Final with a convincing, hard-fought decision over Glen Johnson last June 4.

In what will be an intense, highly charged affair, Froch fully expects his power to be the difference.

“Ward is a boxer and mover who can be messy up close,’’ Froch said. “I can box when I need to and I have proven time and again that I can fight with the best of them. I have my natural fitness, a big heart, experience at the top level and the ability to take a punch.

“My punching power is far superior to Ward’s. This will prove to be the deciding factor.”

Style-wise, Froch compares Ward to an earlier Super Six victim, Dirrell. “They are similar,’’ Froch said. “Both can’t punch and both are frightened of getting hit hard.’’

It wouldn’t be a major fight involving Andre Ward without an upcoming opponent questioning his ability or legitimacy. Ward is accustomed to it. In some ways, he almost expects it and, up to now, thrives on it.

“I don’t think Froch gets the attention he deserves in his country so he tries to get it in the United States,’’ Ward said. “Fine, if it sells a few tickets. He’s certainly not the first to speak out against me and he won’t be the last. I think Froch likes to hear himself talk – except he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

“My thoughts going into this fight are plain and simple: I want to retain the WBA belt, win the WBC belt and The Ring belt and bring home that Super Six hardware. I’m a pro and locked in on that and being one of the best in the world. Froch can dominate through his tabloids; all I want is to dominate the night of the fight. What he must understand is it looks totally different on the inside of those ropes than the way it looks on the outside.

“But Froch is absolutely right (about my elusive style),” said Ward. “I don’t get paid to get hit. It’s not my job. I was taught right away not to get hit or take unnecessary punishment. I’m not in it to be Fight of the Year; I’m in it to be Fighter of the Year.”

The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Antonio Leonard Productions and Matchroom Sport in association with Caesars Atlantic City.

Angel McKenzie Ready For Title Clash With Mikaela Lauren This Saturday

Quirky former Big Brother star Angel McKenzie is taking a break from her busy television schedule to travel to Spain this week, where she is determined to wrench World Welterweight Champion Mikaela Lauren’s coveted WPBF title from her grasp.

Brixton, London based Angel has traveled the World and fought some of the biggest names in the sport, including GBC World Champion Lyndsey Scragg, two time World Champion Conjestina Achieng, former European Champion Daniela David, WIBA World Champion Jessica Balogun (twice), recent World title challenger Olivia Boudouma, five time World Champion Anne Sophie Mathis and in February this year Angel challenged Lucia Morelli for the WIBF World title.

Angel, who is one of the contestants taking part in the all new ITV quiz show Red or Black, today spoke briefly about the upcoming fight, “It’s good to fight Mikaela, she’s a world class boxer.

She fought Cecelia Braekhus for her three belts, she lost but that was her only loss.

I like fighting the best, I fought two time champion Jessica Balogun just before she won the WIBA title and fought the best pound for pound fighter in the World, five time champion Anne Sophie Mathis.

I fight my best against the best.”

Supporting the headlining Mikaela Lauren versus Angel McKenzie title fight is a name that should be be familiar with British boxing fans, Francisco Javier Gonzalez Torres, better known by the simplified Fran Gonzalez tag – who I’m sure many will recall put on a gritty performance against ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese in Dagenham back in March – On the 23rd July Fran will be facing Marcos Munoz.

Also featured on the show is a six round Light Welterweight contest between TWBA Light Welterweight Champion Torrevieja’s Emiliano Casal and Valencia’s Ruben Cupe.

The final professional fight on the card sees big hitting Paterna based Ukrainian Light Welterweight Ivan Grynyuk against fellow Ukrainian Artem Ayvazidi.

Prior to the professional bouts Spanish Olympic boxing squad members Dani Cuevas (Middleweight) and Jhonathan Saavedra (Heavyweight) will open the proceedings against tough opposition from David Cámara de Torrevieja and Russian Oleg Tricolich respectively.

KEA Boxing and Ennis Return to Philly!

Andre Kut’s KEA Boxing Promotions brings another night of professional boxing to the South Philly Arena in Philadelphia PA on Friday July 29th. Headlining the show is an eight round junior middleweight bout, featuring the return of former USBA title holder and nationally ranked junior middleweight sensation Derek “Pooh” Ennis (22-3-1, 13 KOs).

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ennis knows his run for a world title begins right here in the “City of Brotherly Love” and he is fully focused to put on a fight to remember that will once again put him back in line for a possible world title shot. Ranked number ten by the IBF and coming off his first loss in over five years, Ennis of The Germantown section of Philadelphia knows a good showing is imperative to his career. The slick boxer-puncher last fought in Philly exactly a year and a day to the date in the very same South Philly Asylum Arena, capturing a stirring twelve round unanimous decision victory over “King” Gabriel Rosado (16-5, 9KO’s). The importance of the bout has Ennis preparing as if he were fighting for a world championship. One thing is for sure, you will see the best Derek “Pooh” Ennis has to bring, when he steps into the ring on the 29th.

The co-feature of the evening, will also bring back another Philly regular in exciting featherweight Coy Evans (10-0-1, 2KO’s) against an opponent TBA. The featherweight with fast hands, deceptive power and a crowd pleasing style, knows a victory is a must if he is to continue his rise up the featherweight ladder.

Also featured on the card is explosive six round welterweight battle showcasing hard punching welterweight KEA Boxing prospect Juan Rodriquez (6-0, 3KO’s) against Philly’s own Greg Hackett (2-8). Rodriquez has made a home at the Philly arena having captured three of his six victories in the venue.

Also on the card is an intriguing four rounder featuring the Philly debut of explosive Miami heavyweight knockout artist and MAK Boxing prospect Jose Luis Roque (3-0, 3KO’s). After two years of inactivity and the birth of his kid, Roque is ready to show the people in “The City of Brotherly Love,” the explosive power that the sunshine state has become accustomed to. Standing at 6’ 4” Roque has the height and reach to contend with almost any heavyweight in the division, but he knows it all starts right here in Philly.

Another heavyweight from the past who is set to return to action after several years outside of the ring is Gerald “The Jedi” Nobles (26-1, 21KO’s) who is set to swap punches with an opponent to be determined in a six round contest. The former WBA inter-continental heavyweight title challenger looks to make one more run at heavyweight stardom and knows a good showing will put him right back on the path to glory.

There are several top local prospects scheduled for the card in separate bouts, including the likes of Philly welterweight Ardrick “The Hit man” Butler (6-4, 3KO’s), Heavyweights John “The Breed” Lennox (5-0, 2KO’s) and Georgie Garulnik (1-0) along with the Philly debut of debut of Harrisburg PA super bantamweight Josh Bowles (1-0).

MCCLOSKEY’S “PERFECT” SEPTEMBER OPPONENT ANNOUNCED TOMORROW

Dungiven fighter back in WBA eliminator in Belfast live on Sky Sports

Paul McCloskey will fight at the Odyssey Arena live on Sky Sports on September 10 in a WBA eliminator, with promoter Eddie Hearn is promising to announce an exciting opponent at tomorrow’s press conference (July 19).

The Dungiven fighter is aiming to get back on the trail of a World title shot after his fight with Amir Khan in April ended in controversial circumstances, as chaos ensued in the ring after a cut above McCloskey’s left eye was deemed severe enough to stop the fight.

Back on home turf and with a world class opponent in the opposite corner, Hearn believes McCloskey will put the Khan fight behind him and prove he is ready to challenge for a major belt once more.

“Paul is keen to put the Khan fight in the past and move on,” said Hearn. “We cannot change what happened on the night but Paul is in control of his future, and a victory on September 10 in front of a packed crowd in Belfast against this perfect opponent will put him back on top of the pile for a World title shot.”

Ticket details for the September 10 fight at the Odyssey Arena will also be released tomorrow, while a top class undercard to be announced soon.
