Rigondeaux Targets Ramos

CORK, Ireland (July 11, 2011) – No sooner had new World Boxing Association (“WBA”) Super Bantamweight Champion Rico “Suavecito” Ramos had his arm raised victoriously after his seventh-round knockout of defending champion Akishumni Shimoda last Saturday night in Atlantic City, WBA Interim titlist Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux issued an instant challenge to the 24-year-old Ramos for a supreme 122-pound showdown.

The Shimoda-Ramos fight was on the verge of being called off when Rigondeaux’ Irish manager, Gary Hyde, through renown boxing lawyer Patrick English, lodged an objection to the WBA. The action resulted in the promoters for both Shimoda and Ramos being instructed to make a deal with Team Rigondeaux or their fight wouldn’t be sanctioned.

As WBA world Interim champion, Rigo should have been the next challenger for Shimoda’s title, but the Japanese champion by-passed Rigondeaux in favor of an easier title defense against Ramos.

Top Rank-promoted Rigo will now fight Ramos (20-0, 7 KOs) and the Cuban sensation has vowed to take the title belt from Ramos. “I stepped aside and let the fight go ahead,” Rigondeaux explained, “even though they ignored the fact that I was next in line. Ramos will soon regret that he won the title when we get it on.

“Ramos is a tough, aggressive fighter but those types of fighters suit me. I promise he will not have enough time to enjoy this victory because I will be taking that belt from him when we meet in the ring. My goal is to be the undisputed 122-pound world champion and I want to achieve this goal by the end 2012.”

Rigondeaux, arguably the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, defected from Cuba and made his pro debut May 22, 2009, won the NABA super bantamweight title in his third action as a pro and last November in only his seventh fight, he won a 12-round decision against Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2) to become the WBA Interim 122-pound divisional champion. His last fight was an opening-round destruction of former European champion Willie Casey (11-1) last March in Dublin.

A crafty southpaw and deadly body puncher, Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs) now fights out of Miami, and trains in Houston with Ronnie Shields. Rigo is a 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist, as well as a 7-time national champion who captured a pair of World Championship titles during his amazing 243-4 amateur career.

Hyde also manages promising prospects such as British welterweight Mark Heffron (5-0, 4 KOs) and Georgian junior welterweight Levan Ghvarmichava (4-0, 3 KOs), as well as the newly-signed former European Super bantamweight champion Willie “Big Bang” Casey (11-1, 7 KOs), of Ireland.

Bittner looking at Gomez win as fast track to UFC

Lemoore, Calif. –Tachi Palace Fights “Let the Chips Falls” on Friday, August 5 has a different meaning for two fighters on the 9-bout card.

For Drew Bittner, it’s the Soledad, Calif. bantamweight’s big break in mixed martial arts and the fight he believes can get him to the next level.

For Ulysses Gomez, it’s the road back up the mountain. The former flyweight kingpin works to make his way back up the ladder after losing the TPF Flyweight title in February.

“Ulysses is a world recognized flyweight. I believe he is still ranked Top 10 in the World and this is the type of win that will put me in the big show like the UFC,” said Bittner (4-0). “It could also make me a title contender at Tachi.”

Bittner offers several challenges to Gomez, who is coming off of a 5-round decision loss to current TPF Flyweight champ Darrell Montague. Bittner has trained with Montague and Millennia and believes he has the better wrestling as well as the size and strength advantage over Gomez (7-2).

Although Gomez is a highly ranked flyweight the bout will be contested at bantamweight.

“I think Ulysses might think I’m scared to take the fight to the ground because he is such an accomplished grappler,” Bittner said. “But I’m really not all that concerned with his ground game. I think I’m stronger than he is and I have the better wrestling and can dictate where the fight is going to be. I believe I can pound him out on top.”

Wrestling has proven to be the Achilles’ heel in Gomez game, but the Las Vegas grappling ace has opted to make some changes to his camp to make the necessary improvements to bring his game to the next level.

“Drew is a pretty good wrestler and is bigger than me. He has decent hands,” Gomez said. “But I’ve been doing a lot of wrestling. I think that’s something that I’ve neglected in my training camps. I’ve had enough wrestling to get by, but I’m not just trying to get by anymore.”

Gomez moved training camps to Xtreme Couture, while he continues his Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Sim Go and Cobra Kai.

“It’s a completely different camp for me. I’m trying some different stuff and training with different guys. I’m working with a lot of different people for this fight. I’m no longer at the top of the food chain and it’s been a real humbling experience,” Gomez said. “I’m training harder and getting better.”

Tachi Palace Fights will stream live and free on Sherdog.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST).

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight champ Darrell Montague (9-1) will defend his title in the most significant 125-pound fight to take place on U.S. soil. The Chino, Calif. will take on San Clemente, Calif.’s Ian McCall (10-2) in the main event. McCall is currently ranked No. 3 in the world and Montague is No. 6.

In the co-main event, Porterville, Calif.’s Joe Soto (9-1) makes his return to Tachi after suffering his first career loss and is returning from several eye surgeries. Soto will take on San Diego, Calif.’s Eddie Yagin (13-4-1).

Also, in another pivotal flyweight bout World No. 2 ranked Mamoru Yamaguchi (26-5-3) faces No. 4 Jussier da Silva (9-1). Brazil’s da Silva will be back in action for the first time since suffering his first loss and losing his top ranking. Meanwhile, Japan’s Yamaguchi will be making his second consecutive appearances for TPF.

Tachi Palace Fights Middleweight champ Canada’s David Loiseau (20-10) defends his title for the first time against Irvine, Calif.’s Giva Santana (15-1).

22 year old ‘Bazooka’ Joe Linenfelser

Already veteran pro boxer for nearly 6 years

CHICAGO (July 11, 2011) – Junior middleweight prospect “Bazooka” Joe Linenfelser (9-1-1, 6 KOs), a 22-year-old boxer from Rockford, Illinois who lived a few years in Florida before returning home, has already been fighting professionally for nearly six years.

 

When he made his pro debut October 8, 2005, stopping 181-fight veteran Donnie Penelton in the opening round of their fight in Iowa, Joe was only 17 years old, the youngest pro boxer in the United States at that time, and a high school senior in Port Richey, Florida.

Most states require professional boxers to be 18. Iowa, however, licensed Linenfelser at 17 but only after he received special permission, which included a review of his grades and a letter from a teacher, an evaluation in terms of possessing exceptional boxing ability for his age, and undergoing an interview with Iowa Athletic Commissioner Dave Neil to convince authorities that Joe’s decision to turn pro was his own.

“I was going to the gym and the only guys there for me to spar with were pro heavyweights or pros,” Joe explained. “They took it easy on me because I was so young, but I was able to hang with them and decided to turn pro when I turned 17. I just love boxing. I tried to get away from it a few times because I had to make money working. It’s tough putting in a tough 40 hours of work and then go train at night, but boxing sucked me back in. For about 5-6 months, I was the youngest professional boxer in the United States.”

Joe first got the boxing itch when he was only 6 ½, while watching his father Jeff workout. “I bought Joe a pair of Sugar Ray Leonard boxing gloves when he was four,” explained Jeff, who manages his son’s career. “Right away, I knew he was a boxer by the way he threw an overhand right. The other little kids would get hit, cry and stop. Joe always took a good punch and, when he threw that overhand right….all done! He started learning how to box at 6 ½ and had his first amateur fight when he was nine. Joe (36-12 amateur career record) won a few Illinois State championships and reached the final of the Florida Silver Mittens. But Joe didn’t learn the art of boxing in the amateurs, gaining invaluable experience from gym workouts with pros like Pat Coleman.

“Joe’s always had heavy hands. He may not look fast, sort of like watching Kelly Pavlik, but he can really hit. Punching power is about timing, not speed, and Joe has an incredible sense of timing. When he gets moving, he goes one way and throws in motion; his opponent is gone. He played football and wrestled in school. He finished third in the state in wrestling and set a junior high record for interceptions, but I knew from the start that he was a boxer. Joe was a national 140-pound kick-boxing champion when he was 15, but he wasn’t challenged enough and stuck with boxing.”

Jeff has coached his son up to this point, but he just reached an agreement with “Irish” Micky Ward and his brother, Dicky Eklund, to start training “Bazooka” Joe.

In October of 2008, Linenfelser registered his signature victory to date against former NABA & NBA champion “Fearless” Fernando Hernandez, who Joe had previously defeated in a kickboxing fight. Linenfelser put Hernandez to sleep in the fifth round and then into retirement right after their fight in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Next up for “Bazooka Joe” was an eight-round throw-down with 1996 Cuban Olympian Ivan Leden (12-8-1), in Milwaukee, that Linenfelser won by decision.

Linenfelser was inactive the for 14 ½ months (2010-2011) due to an injury suffered in the ring, until his triumphant ring return this past April against Jeremy Marts in Chicago. Linenfelser dropped Marts twice from body shots in the final round en route to a win by unanimous, six-round decision.

“I started fights cautiously for the first few rounds,” Joe described his style of fighting. “I don’t like to miss. I feel one missed punch counts as getting hit with 10. I time my punches and, when I hit them, they’re out. I have a little possum in me. I do a lot of baiting and breakdown my opponents with hard body punches. The last two years I’ve worked hard on body punching with my dad. Fights often come down to body punches landed, when they start holding their elbows down to protect the body, and then it’s time to go upstairs to finish ‘em off.”

Linenfelser’s nickname, “Bazooka Joe,’ was this father’s idea. Jeff went so far as to ask The Topps Company, Inc. for permission to avoid any trademark infringement. “Joe’s was a kid who liked to chew bubblegum,” Jeff explained. “Nobody had ever used that name, which had been around for a hundred years, and Joe does hit like a bazooka – it just kind of fit.”

“Bazooka” Joe Linenfelser is promoted by Bobby Hitz’ Hitz Boxing Entertainment, managed by his father Jeff Linenfelser, and now co-trained by “Irish” Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund.

Graham Earl To Showcase Local Fighters On His 31st July ‘Renaissance’ Show

With the rematch of his classic 2007 ‘Fight of the Year’ encounter with Michael Katsidis firmly on hold for the foreseeable future, Graham Earl is keeping busy by presenting his third event of the year, ‘Renaissance’, which will take place in his home town of Luton on Sunday 31st July.

Heading up the card at the ‘Renaissance’ event are a pair of Graham Earl’s prodigies, Stevenage’s Terry Holmes and Belfast’s Joe Hillerby.

Terry Holmes has proved to be nothing short of sensational on his three previous outings, his last outing, against Jason Nesbitt at York Hall in May, is a fine example of the Stevenage teenager’s battling spirit

Holmes started strong and took the fight to the much more experienced Nesbitt. Each attack by him was met with strong resistance, Nesbitt countered with precision forcing Holmes to rethink his fight plan. It was a close round but Holmes had done the better work to earn the points.

Round two see Nesbitt take a leaf out of Holmes’ book, by starting fast and taking the fight to the Stevenage man. This worked to Holmes’ favour, Holmes is a classy boxer and Nesbitt’s new tactics allowed him to turn on the style. The later half of the round was all Holmes who plain boxed Nesbitt’s head off.

Round three and four produced more of the same, with Holmes utilising his superior boxing skills to easily secure the rounds, and the bout as the referee declared Holmes victorious by a shutout 40-36 points margin.

Belfast’s big hitting Joe Hillerby, will also be getting his fourth outing. Hillerby has also made quite an impact since turning pro in October last year. No surprise really, after all he’s an all action heavy hitter with a knockout finish, as proved on his debut against Gavin Putney, which lasted just 43 seconds!

His second fight, against tough battler Ryan Clark, went the full distance and proved to be one of the most exciting action packed fights of the night at Graham’s excellent ‘Capital Punishment’ event back in January.

Hillerby’s third bout, against last minute replacement Bheki Moyo – and I do mean last minute as Moyo took the bout with less than ninety minutes notice after the original opponent failed to show – also went the distance, although it did look like the ‘Belfast Banger’ may have been showing his appreciation, for the game Earl’s Court based South African stepping in to save the fight, as it looked like he could have stopped Moyo on a couple of occasions but pulled back.

Joining Terry Holmes and Joe Hillerby on the show is Luton based Floridian Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Oshundrinde, who will be looking to get his career on track, following his loss, due to retirement after injuring his hand, to Tichfield’s Danny Couzens back in May.

On the 31st Oshunrinde, who is coached by Barry Smith at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in London, will be facing Jahmaine Smyle for the second time in his fledgling career.

Their first meeting, at the magnificent ‘Capital Punishment’ event in January, had a highly contentious finish which see Oshunrinde robbed of his first win on British soil, when the referee declared the bout a technical draw and not the clear first round stoppage finish it was, following the fight being stopped due to a serious cut over Smyle’s right eye.

‘Renaissance’ will also feature the debut of three of Graham Earl’s newest signings, Luton’s James Smith, Hatfield’s Tom Little and Donegal’s Danny Mulhern.
