USBA heavyweight champ Maurice Harris seeks redemption

Posted on | July 8, 2011 | No Comments

July 16 title defense vs. Derric Rossy in Atlantic City

NEW YORK (July 8, 2011) – Much more than his title belt will be on line Saturday night , July 16 when USBA HeavyweightChampion Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris makes his first defense against Derric“The Shaolin Fist”Rossy at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Harris needs to erase the memories of his last fight in order to keep his roller coaster-like career alive.

Harris (24-15-2, 10 KOs) was stopped in the third round by Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (36-2, 24 KOs) in May, live on ESPN Friday Night Fights in their IBF Box-Off.

“I was used to taking last minute fights and didn’t know how to handle two months of training for that fight,” Harris said.“I left it in the gym and on the roads running. That wasn’t me. I wanted to look so good fighting on television for my family and those supporting me. I put too much pressure on myself. I take nothing away from Tony Thompson. I respect him and he was the better man that night, but he was fouling (rabbit punches) me throughout the fight. No excuses, though, I blame myself. I’m a man. I know I need to focus on the task at hand and not worry about my last fight.”

The 35-year-old Harris, winner of the 2002 Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament, has defeated world champions (Sergei Liakhovich) and challengers but he’s also lost to several club fighters during his up-and-down career.

“I was so confident Maurice would beat Thompson that I would have bet my house,”Harris’ promoter (Boxing 360 CEO/Founder) Mario Yagobi remarked.” His last fight was a fluke. Maurice was hit behind the head so many times that he had double, even triple vision. Otherwise he would have been able to have a much better performance. I know how talented he is and I believe in him.”

“No way Derrick Rossy beats Maurice, but he also needs to come back strong to show people that this is the real Moe, not the fighter people saw in his last fight. Maurice has it all over Rossy: boxing IQ and experience. He’s motivated because he needs to win. . His boxing career is at stake. There’s no place for him to go if he doesn’t win.”

Rossy (25-4, 14 KOs), rated No. 15 by the WBA, was a standout college football player at Boston College. He also lost in this year’s IBF Box-Off to Eddie Chambers by 12-round decision. His most significant victories have been versus former WBO champion and 1988 Olympic gold-medal winner Ray Mercer (DEC12) and world title challenger Carl David Drummond (DEC10)

“Rossy is a good fighter and it should be an interesting fight,” IBF No. 8 rated Harris commented. “I know he’sinexperienced – he’s been fighting six years and I’ve been doing this for 20 –and he makes a lot of mistakes. I need to beat him to get back where I was. He’s in my way and I don’t plan on giving up my belt.

HDNET’S “INSIDE MMA” TACKLES STEROIDS AND JUDGING ISSUES

Posted on | July 8, 2011 | No Comments

Dennis Hallman, Frank Trigg, and Ovince St. Preux join the panel – TONIGHT at 9:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (July 8, 2011)  Tonight on “Inside MMA,” Kenny and Bas tackle two of the hottest topics in mixed martial arts – steroids and judging – with an all-star panel featuring UFC Welterweight Dennis Hallman, HDNet’s own Frank Trigg, and Strikeforce™ Light Heavyweight Ovince St. Preux.

Nate Marquardt’s controversial dismissal from the UFC due to testosterone replacement therapy has put the issue of performance enhancing drugs back at the forefront of the MMA world.

Hallman helped ignite that controversy last year on “Inside MMA” when he said that over 50% of fighters use steroids. He subsequently recanted that account in a post-fight interview.  On Friday, Hallman shares his current opinion, and our panel engages in a heated discussion about PEDs in MMA.

Judging has also been a near constant topic of conversation in the sport in recent years and another recent string of debated decisions has only served to further stir the pot. Our panel shares their thoughts on what can be done to fix the problem.

A clip of the program can be found here:

http://www.hd.net/blogs/inside-mma-tackles-steroids-and-judging-inside-mma-preview/

Plus, the panelists discuss upcoming fights and “Inside MMA” takes a special look at the unique personality of Matt Horwich as he gets set to fight Jake Rosholt in the main event of “HDNet Fights: Shark Fights 17” next Friday on HDNet.   And, Ron Kruck has a full recap of UFC 132 and we hear from all the big winners.

Also, don’t miss “HDNet Fights: It’s Showtime 2011 – Spain” immediately following “Inside MMA” at 10:00 p.m. ET.

Tom “Kong” Watson and Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg to Headline BAMMA 7 in a Battle for the Organizations World Middleweight Title

Posted on | July 8, 2011 | No Comments

London, England – July 8, 2011 – Europe’s largest and most prominent Mixed Martial Arts promotion, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA), announced today that BAMMA Champion Tom “Kong” Watson and UFC veteran Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg will headline BAMMA 7 in a battle for the organizations World Middleweight Title.  The organization also revealed a high-octane welterweight bout between Strikeforce veteran Joey Villasenor and top UK contender Che Mills.  BAMMA 7 is shaping up to be the popular UK fight organizations most impressive card to date. The event will take place on Saturday, September 10 at The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, UK.

According to Liam Fisher, Head of Business Development at BAMMA, “Watson said he was open to fighting Trigg if the fans were interested in the match-up …and the fans were definitely interested. The fans wanted it, so we made it happen. After Trigg’s impressive performance against John Phillips and Tom sending Ninja Rua into retirement, this is going to be a very interesting fight to watch.”

Over the past year BAMMA Middleweight Champion Tom “Kong” Watson (14-4-0) has made it very clear that he is at the top of his game. In May 2010 Watson defeated UFC veteran Matt Horwich at BAMMA 3 to become the first BAMMA Middleweight Champion. Four months later, more than 835,000 TV viewers in the UK tuned in to watch him defend his title against Alex Reid at BAMMA 4. In 2011 Watson continues to reign. Most recently Watson successfully defended his BAMMA championship belt for the second time, defeating one of the top middleweight contenders in the world, Murilo “Ninja” Rua.

Kong had this to say about his upcoming bout with UFC veteran Frank Trigg “It is funny how Frank Trigg see’s on my Twitter that I’m injured and can’t train and then all of a sudden decides he wants the fight. I highly doubt I will even get a week’s worth of solid training in for this bout, but I’m sure a week is enough to beat an old man who calls himself ‘Twinkle Toes’. I apologize to the BAMMA fans in advance that I won’t be able to prepare like I normally do, but it is what it is, a man’s got to eat.”

Watson’s opponent UFC veteran Frank Trigg (21-8-0) recently made a successful return to the middleweight division, quickly defeating John “The White Mike Tyson” Phillips at BAMMA 6. Trigg destroyed Phillips with brutal elbow strikes that lead to a first-round TKO victory (doctor stoppage.) With that victory, Trigg earned a shot at Watson’s 185-pound belt. Before returning to the UFC and the 170-pound division in 2009, Trigg had an impressive run as a middleweight, defeating Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Kazuo Misaki. Trigg plans to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the 185lb division by emerging as the new BAMMA Middleweight Champion.

BAMMA 7 marks the organization’s third visit to the city of Birmingham. The highly anticipated fight card is stacked from top to bottom with well-known marquee fighters and two title bouts. In addition to the highly anticipated match-up between Watson and Trigg, the card features a Lightweight Championship bout between BAMMA’s World Lightweight Champion Rob Sinclairand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Leonardo Santos. Also joining them on the card is Ultimate Fighter Season 8 winner Efrain Escudero (15-3-0), who will face reigning UCMMA Lightweight Champion Tim Radcliffe (11-4-0) and Gloucester’s Matt Ewin (22-9-1) who will collide withValentino Petrescu (11-2-0) in a Middleweight bout with fight of the night potential.

Additional bouts will be revealed over the coming weeks so stay tuned! BAMMA 7 will take place on Saturday September 10, 2011 at The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. Tickets are on sale now at www.bamma.com. Limited VIP packages are available for £150 and include a ringside seat, entrance to the VIP after party and more!
