MATT MITRIONE RESPONDS TO TITO ORTIZ TONIGHT ON HDNET’S “INSIDE MMA”

DALLAS (July 1, 2011) There is no love lost between UFC fighters Matt Mitrione and Tito Ortiz due to a recent altercation at the UFC Fighter Summit. Ortiz addressed his beef with Mitrione on a recent edition of “Inside MMA,” saying that Mitrione had made inappropriate comments about his girlfriend Jenna Jameson and that Ortiz’s family is off-limits.

Tonight, Mitrione responds to Ortiz.  Will his words bury the hatchet or just rub salt in the wound?

The heavyweights are making noise again.  Once known as a boxing’s glory division, it has fallen on hard times the last few years.  The Klitschko brothers are the dominant heads of the class.  Vitali is the older, more stoic brother, while Wladimir is the more athletic, yet at the same time, more vulnerable younger brother.

Enter David Haye, a brash competitor from the United Kingdom, who has set his sights on both brothers since entering the heavyweight division in 2008.  He has gone so far to have t-shirts printed with the severed heads of the Klitschko brothers.  He has called them out and insulted them.

Wladimir will be the one to finally get Haye in the ring and there is no love lost between these fighters.  The Imtech Arena in Hamburg Germany will be at full capacity with many Klitschko faithful in attendance along with some rabid British fans following their hometown hero and hoping to see him leave Germany with Klitschko’s head and belts on a silver platter.

Klitschko has an ability to take a very good opponent and make them look like an ordinary fighter.  The question to pose is “Can David Haye be extraordinary?”.  The heavyweight division matters again!

Klitschko:

Klitschko is a patient, stand-up boxer who likes to utilize his thunderous jab to keep opponents at bay and keep the pace steady.  Coupled with a devastating right hand and above-average left hook, Klitschko has the ability to finish an opponent with either hand.  Likes to keep the pace slow due to concerns about his chin and conditioning.

 

Haye:

Haye uses exceptional hand and foot speed to create angles and punching opportunities against larger and slower opponents.  Has power in both hands and is capable of scoring a knockout with a single punch but most damage is usually the result of fast two-fisted combinations.

 

STRENGTHS

 

Klitschko:

* Jab – Klitschko possesses an educated left hand and can dictate a bout with his jab which is delivered with a force similar to the great Sonny Liston.

 

* Experience – Klitschko was a former decorated amateur, winning the Olympic Gold Medal in ’96 and has competed at a championship level for the last 12 years and has improved exceptionally under the tutelage of Emmanuel Stewart.

 

* Athletic – Klitschko is an amazing athlete for a man his size combining a unique blend of size, speed, and agility.

Haye:

* Speed – Haye has retained his speed after moving up to the heavyweight division.  He owns fast feet and quick hands and that gives him an advantage over many of the plodding heavyweights.

 

* Confidence – Sometimes bordering on overconfidence, Haye has a supreme belief in himself and his abilities.  He doesn’t show any fear even in the face of a much larger adversary.

 

* Fresh – Haye has not gone through many punishing wars.  Even fights that have lasted longer were examples of Haye dishing out much more than he was taking.  He is fighter squarely in the prime of his career.

WEAKNESSES

 

Klitschko:

* Chin – Klitschko is a fighter who looks to be cut out of granite but his chin has shown serious cracks in it.  Corrie Sanders demolished him and in his first win over Samuel Peter, he found himself on the canvas on three occasions.

 

* Conditioning – Klitschko’s conditioning has let him down in the past, most notably in a fight he was clearly dominating when he ran out of gas and was stopped by Lamon Brewster.  Sometimes, he will wear himself out trying to box at a fast pace.

 

* Fragile Psych – While he has scored a number dominant victories since his last scare against Peter in ’05, you can clearly see that Klitschko still has concerns about his chin and conditioning and he shows and unwillingness at times to step on the gas when an opponent his vulnerable.

 

Haye:

* Chin – Haye was only stopped once, by Carl Thompson at cruiserweight but he has been knocked down on other occasions.  He is another specimen built from granite with a chin that has some cracks.

 

* Size Disadvantage – Haye is a well proportioned boxer but he will be giving up nearly 4” in height and approximately 30-40 lbs in weight.  He could wear down against the size and strength of the larger Klitschko.

 

* Heavyweight Competition – Since moving to heavyweight, Haye has beaten the smallish Monte Barret, the large-but-limited Nicolai Valuev, the old and ordinary John Ruiz, and the frightened Audley Harrison.  This will mark the first time, he has met a heavyweight who owns all the tools that Klitschko does.

PREVIOUS BOUT

 

Klitschko:

(9-11-10) Klitschko methodically wore down Samuel Peter, finally finishing him in the 10th round.  In their first meeting in 2005, Klitschko won a unanimous decision but had to climb off the canvas three times.  In the rematch, Klitschko was dominating punishing a tiring Peter before finally flooring him in the 10th and forcing the referee to stop the contest.

 

Haye:

(11-13-10) Haye impressively destroyed rival Audley Harrison, a former Olympic Gold-Medalist.  Harrison fought in a defensive shell and Haye broke through in the 3rd round, blasting him to the canvas and forcing him into retirement.

3 BEST PERFORMANCES

 

Klitschko:

* Chris Byrd (4/22/06) – In a rematch from Klitschko’s unanimous decision win in 2000, he was dominant from the start punishing Byrd, flooring him in the 7th and leaving him bloody and beaten, annexing his IBF title.

 

* Samuel Peter (9/11/10) – Another rematch where Klitschko much more impressively asserted himself.  After Peter’s early aggression, Klitschko took over and issued a methodical beating before sending Peter into defeat in the 10th round.

 

* Ray Mercer (06/29/02) – Klitschko floored the iron-jawed Mercer in the 1st round, and continued punishing him in a surprisingly one-sided affair, becoming the first man to ever stop Mercer.

Haye:

* John Ruiz (4-3-10) – Ruiz is usually lambasted as a slow, boring fighter, but he has been remarkably durable during his career.  Haye made mincemeat out of him flooring him four times in scoring a dominant 9th round victory.

 

* Enzo Maccarinelli (3-8-08) – The ultra hyped cruiserweight title unification showdown between two once-beaten champions was a showcase bout for Haye as he impressively demolished Maccarinelli in two brutal rounds.

 

* Monte Barrett (11/15/08) – Haye made his assault on the heavyweight division with an eye-opening win over fringe contender Barrett.  Haye opened up flooring Barrett five times in stopping him in the 5th round.

PENECALE PREDICTION

Haye will enter the ring with a confident smirk while Klitschko will step between the ropes with an icy, focused glare.  Even during the introductions, Haye will keep trying to instigate and Klitschko will be burning holes in him with a stare.

At the opening bell, Haye will start on his toes, moving in and out of range, and throwing single punches.  Klitschko will keep his distance, trying to set the range with his jab and corner Haye.  The first few rounds will be tense but overall uneventful.

The jab will start become a more dominant weapon for Klitschko in the 3rd round as he uses it to keep Haye off balance and affect him with his superior strength.

By the 5th round, Haye will start to shown the signs of desperation.  He will throw wild haymakers.  Klitschko will counter with solid shots to the face with will cause Haye’s eyes to swell and blood to seep from his nose.

Klitschko will be in firm control by the 7th and Haye will be in retreat mode, his eyes blinking and confidence waning.  A long jab followed by a big right hand will buckle Haye’s knees and he will fall back into the corner and stumble to the canvas.  Haye will rise to his feet and try to survive, but his survival will be short-lived.  Klitschko will force him back to the ropes, landing a double left hook to the head and a short right hand that will send Haye to all fours as the referee is jumping in to wave off the fight.

PROMOTER BOB ARUM CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

BRANDON RIOS & URBANO ANTILLON,

NEW YORK (June 30, 2011) – Team Rios and Team Antillon spent time with the boxing media on a teleconference call hosted by Top Rank’s Bob Arum on Thursday, a week before their upcoming world title showdown on Saturday, July 9, LIVESHOWTIME^® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The undefeated Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., by way of Lubbock, Texas, will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title against Antillon in the main event of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader.  Arguably the division’s most exciting fighter, Rios is coming off the biggest win of his career – a 10^thround TKO of defending champion Miguel Acosta on Feb. 26 to capture the WBA title.

Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., has given sensational performances in recent fights.  In his last outing, he lost a controversial decision against World Boxing Council lightweight champ Humberto Soto last December in the consensus “Fight of the Year.”  Though he lost to Soto, Antillon emerged from that fight a world-class contender.

In the co-main event, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, will square off with Carlos Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), of Chicago, by way of Mexico, in a 10-round junior middleweight fight.  The event is promoted by Top Rank.

BOB ARUM:

“Brandon Rios and Urbano Antillon – you don’t have to sell that fight. Everyone knows they are going to see a really great and entertaining fight. We are ready to set the standard and the record as far as ratings are concerned on SHOWTIME this year.

“Urbano Antillon has fought for a number of years under the Top Rank banner. One thing we can be sure of with Urbano is that we’re going to get a great, great fight. He’s a terrific fighter and has a lot of determination and is a terrific talent. He knows that this is a big, big opportunity for him. A lot of people think he won the fight against Soto but the controversial decision went against him.

“I’m personally looking forward to seeing this fight because I love an all-action fight. I personally predict that when all is said and done and we’re sitting around discussing fights of the year, this fight will be right up there as one of the candidates as 2011 Fight of the Year.”

BRANDON RIOS:

“Camp is going very well and I’m working with my new strength and conditioning coach. I know he (Antillon) has said the third time is a charm for a world title but in this manner it will not be a charm. He’s a helluva fighter and a tough challenger so we’re ready for the best. I’m just really happy to be fighting back in California again. I haven’t fought here since 2005. I just can’t wait to give the hometown fans what they came for and have paid to see – just two warriors going out.  That’s exactly what they are going to get: two guys beating the crap out of each other.

“In the (Miguel) Acosta fight I think I showed the world that I have a lot of heart and that I love boxing a lot and that I love the business. After the first couple of rounds the way Acosta was doing his job, I kept to my game plan and I overcame it and I knocked him out. I think I impressed a lot of people. Two years ago I wasn’t doing the right things outside the ring, but I’ve changed my life around.”

What do you mean that Acosta was doing his job?

“What I mean by that is that he came in to fight. I was always doing my job. I’m pretty much a late starter. I was putting on the pressure from the start and we knew the first couple of rounds were going to be pretty hard because of the way he is. We knew that the momentum would shift as the rounds went on and I would get stronger. He was doing his job but I was just putting the pressure on more and following what my corner was telling me to do and I knew I would come out victorious.”

Can you describe the personality clash between you and Antillon?

“We were supposed to fight a year ago and unfortunately I got cut in sparring. He was running around saying I didn’t want to fight him and that I was chicken. He was just running his mouth and after awhile he just started to get to me. And then when this fight started he was doing it again, just running his mouth and talking all kinds of smack. At the press conference he mentioned my wife. Fighters shouldn’t bring families into it.

“I love it when I have a beef with my opponent. I needed something in the gym because lately it’s gotten a little boring. I have to have that little excitement, someone talking smack about me, someone doing this or that to me. I have to go to the gym mad so I can get a get a good workout and it’s not going to affect me during the fight. I love that. The gym was getting boring until this and now I’m ready to go out and handle my business.”

On watching the Antillon-Soto fight:

“I’ve been watching that fight. (Antillon) came out and showed a lot of heart. He came out and was determined to win that title, but Soto just out-punched him and out-classed him, I guess. To me, I think I hit harder than Soto so it’s going to be a different story. This is just going to be one helluva fight which the fans are going to love. I’m very excited to be fighting against someone who’s going to give me a war. That’s that stuff that drives me. That’s the stuff I live for. That’s why I love boxing. It’s something I can’t wait for.”

What fighters did you look up to when you were growing up?

“I looked up to Julio Cesar Chavez. I liked the way (Diego) Corrales fought. I liked the way Arturo Gatti fought. I liked the way Castillo fought. That’s the type of fighters I looked up. Even in the amateurs, those are the fighters that had I had a similar style with. I took a little bit of everything from Chavez.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Rios’ Trainer:

“We are going to go in there and have some fun. That’s what we like to do. We know Antillon is going to be very prepared as he’s been training up in Big Bear with Abel Sanchez. We expect the best from Antillon. But you will see the best Brandon Rios. This is a helluva fight and hopefully no one misses it and this one breaks the (ratings) record.

“I know what type of fighter I have. Two years ago we wanted to take it little by little. But just a month before the (Anthony) Peterson fight I told (Rios manager) Cameron (Dunkin) that right now is the moment when Brandon is going to surprise the world and make everyone believe in him and we did it.

“Brandon’s such a hard worker and his mentality is to not only to be great in this sport but to be one of the all-time greats and be considered a helluva fighter. He told me, ‘I don’t care if I’m ever in the pound-for-pound. I may never be. But I just want to be remembered for being a tough fighter that I am.’ “

On the trash talking:

“That’s the first thing that people mentioned to me after the press conference. That’s the best thing that could have happened. I know Brandon. Now he’s training harder and he’s loving it. Now he wants to go out there and basically kick his ass. That’s what he wants to do. When Antillon came up to shake his hand after the press conference Brandon said, ‘Why do you want to shake my hand. I f—in hate you right now. Dude, get the f— out of here.’ People think that might hurt Brandon but no, that actually helps him train harder and perform better in the fight.”

URBANO ANTILLON:

“Our training is going great. If you thought I was in great shape against Soto, I’m probably even in better shape this time. I’m in a different state of mind, a positive state of mind and just looking forward to this fight.

“I’m not feeling any sense of urgency. Are these chances to fight for a world title going to keep coming around? Probably not. But God works in mysterious ways and I have to think that more than ever I’m mentally, physically, emotionally ready to move forward and win this world title.

“I’m not going to change my style. I have boxed in the past but it wasn’t my first choice. It was just something that I had to do. It was more of a survival thing that I did. I made little tweaks here and there with Abel Sanchez and hopefully we’ll be able to adapt them into our game plan. That’s the plan. You’re going to see the best plan for a guy who is aggressive and comes forward.

“I don’t feel pressure whatsoever fighting at home. It won’t be my first time fighting at home and hopefully won’t be my last. It’s always been an honor and, if anything, very motivating. It’s always great to have people backing you up. Sometimes the water can get pretty deep so it’s always good to have people to pull you through those moments and give you that little extra push to come forward. I’ve always had great support from my hometown and hope to bring them a world championship.

“The difference between Humberto Soto and Brandon Rios is that Rios is not a mover, he’s not a boxer. If he tried to do that I’m sure he’s not going to do that great a job at it. You just don’t change things from day to night, I guess. If he wants to stand there in front of me he’s going to get hit. And the ones that have stayed there I’ve been breaking them down or knocking them out. Brandon Rios is nothing special. He’s no different than anyone else. We’re going to go in there with the mission to bring him in and break him down and come out with the victory.”

Is this a personal fight for you like it is for Rios?

“No, not at all. It’s kind of mind boggling the way he’s taken it. I did mention his wife but never in a way that should upset him. He can play victim to whatever he wants and say I said this or I said that. It doesn’t matter to me. But I know why I said it and I know my intentions behind it. He could take it personal but he’s nothing special. He’s just like any other opponent. It’s nothing personal to me except that he’s holding my world title and that’s the only thing personal behind it.”

“I was very surprised the way he reacted actually. I’ve never seen someone lose it like that in front of me so bad. It really took me back to my elementary school years being flipped off by a fifth-grader on the playground or something. It was something else and pretty funny to watch. I’m sure Oxnard and the City Council who gave him a key to the city are pretty proud of him that he reacted like that. He’s a great example to them and the community, I’m sure.”

How can you compare Soto with Rios?

“There’s not much to compare other than they’re both world champions. Soto’s a boxer, a mover and has better defense.”

ABEL SANCHEZ, Antillon’s Trainer:

“We are looking forward to a spectacular fight. Both guys are going to be very prepared and I know Robert is a great coach. I know Rios is training very hard and is a tough opponent for us but you know what, that’s what these fights are supposed to be. A world championship fight is supposed to be this tough. Urbano has had a great camp and we are looking forward to July 9 and that boxing will have a new superstar. LAS VEGAS (June 27, 2011) – Due to injuries suffered in a car accident involving former lightweight champion Joel Casamayor, the lineup for the July 29 “Fight Night at The Cosmopolitan” event at the Chelsea Ballroom has changed.

 

The Casamayor vs. Jorge Teron match-up has been cancelled. In its place, will be a 12-round IBF Super Lightweight Elimination bout between the Dominican Republic’s once-beaten IBF #3-rated Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (20-1, 18 KOs) and Washington DC’s IBF #4-ranked Lamont Peterson (24-1-1, 14 KOs).

 

The 10-round light heavyweight showdown between Edison “Pantera” Miranda (34-5, 29 KOs) and Yordanis Despaigne (8-1, 4 KOs) will remain on the card.

 

In conjunction with Warriors Boxing Promotions and Blue Wave Group, “Fight Nights at The Cosmopolitan” combines the mystique and excitement of legendary Las Vegas boxing matches with a new and socially dynamic experience. Cayo and Peterson will be fighting for the #1 world ranking and the right to face the winner of July 23 bout between current IBF king Zab Judah and WBA champion Amir Khan.

 

Victor “Mermelada” Cayo is an excellent fighter with good power, speed and incredible elusiveness.

 

The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native started boxing at the age of 11 after finding himself in several street fights. “One day I was walking by this boxing gym in my neighborhood and I asked the coach to teach me how to box and defend myself. I have been doing this ever since and won’t stop till I become a world champion.”

 

Cayo had over 300 amateur fights and won numerous tournaments including the Dominican Republic Military Games and won a Silver Medal in the Cupa Independencia De Boxeo, fighting against boxers from Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Haiti, Ecuador and Italy.

 

He is managed by Caesar Mercedes and trained by Gabriel Sarmiento and co-promoted by Warriors Boxing and Samson Boxing. He trains at World Crown Sports Facility in Oxnard, California.

At the age of 27, Lamont Peterson is a six-year pro. He is the older brother, by 14 months, of lightweight contender Anthony Peterson – both were amateur standouts before they turned pro.

The Petersons have been regularly featured on ESPN and HBO boxing telecasts and their story has been frequently discussed on the show. They were left without parents at an early age, with their father in prison and their mother suffering personal issues. The brothers were reportedly homeless on the streets of Washington, DC for several years.

While homeless at age 10, they were noticed by Barry Hunter, a boxing coach. Over time Hunter developed their boxing skills while mentoring them and both brothers morphed into amateur boxing stars.

Lamont (28-1-1, 14 KOs) is a former WBO Interim Junior Welterweight World Champion. He won the title in April 2009. He is coming off a 10-round draw on December 11, 2010, with top-rated contender Victor Ortiz at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and live on HBO. He suffered a 12 round decision loss in a WBO junior welterweight world title challenge against defending champion Timothy Bradley Jr. in December 2009.

 

Peterson was last seen in December fighting to an HBO-televised draw with now world champion Victor Oritz. Cayo’s most recent appearance was a first-round knockout over Javier Gomez on October 29.
