THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS ANNOUNCES HARD HITTING THIRD INSTALLMENT OF “FIGHT NIGHTS”
Posted on | June 16, 2011 | No Comments
Return of Boxing Series Live on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” July 29 Featuring Bouts Between Edison “Pantera” Miranda &Yordanis Despaigne and Joel Casamayor & Jorge Luis Teron
LAS VEGAS (June 16, 2011) – On July 29, “Fight Nights at The Cosmopolitan” returns to The Chelsea Ballroom featuring matchups between four of professional boxing’s toughest and hardest-hitting warriors and airing live on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights.”
In conjunction with Warriors Boxing Promotions and Blue Wave Group, “Fight Nights at The Cosmopolitan”combines the mystique and excitement of legendary Las Vegas boxing matches with a new and socially dynamic experience. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. and are priced at $250 for VIP tables, $150 for ringside seats, $100 for floor seats, $50 for grandstand seating and $20 for general admission tickets and are available for purchase by calling 877-551-7778 or at www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com.
In the night’s main event, former world title challenger and universally feared power puncher Edison “Pantera” Miranda (34-5, 29 KOs) of Colombia will face former Cuban Olympian Yordanis Despaigne (8-1, 4 KOs) in a guaranteed thriller of a 10-round light heavyweight showdown. In a 10-round super lightweight battle where sparks are sure to fly, former three-time world champion Joel Casamayor (38-5-1, 22 KOs) will face Bronx, New York’s Jorge Luis Teron (25-2-1, 17 KOs).
A fan favorite the world over for his brilliant mix of amazing punching power and a unique flair for showmanship, 30-year-old Miranda will have just his second fight in the light heavyweight division after having challenged for world titles in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions.
Despite having just nine professional fights, 31-year-old Despaigne can rely on the wealth of experience he gained during his impressive 300-fight amateur, with victories over several future world champions including Andre Dirrell, Jean Pascal and Károly Balzsay.
Given both fighters aggressive styles of fighting, this exciting battle will almost surely end with a 10 count for one of the contestants.
Heading into his showdown with Teron, 39-year-old former three-time world champion Joel “El Cepillo” Casamayor knows that every fight is a “do-or-die” affair and his sensational career will be over should he lose again.
For New Yorker Teron, a third loss would put a major damper on his plans to someday challenge for a world title. Teron began his professional boxing career on a tear and was undefeated in 23 contests before losing two of his last five to strong opposition.
Casamayor will not have to look hard to find Teron, as both fighters are known for their love to trade leather.
“This is another sensational show at the most dazzling location in all of Vegas,” said promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. “Both of the main televised fights are certain to be all-out conflicts between men who have never given an inch of ground up easily. It’s an honor to be bringing this show to such a world-class resort as The Cosmopolitan.”
Undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

Ring 8 Notebook: Silverglade, Serrano & Parillo guest speakers Tuesday in NY
Posted on | June 16, 2011 | No Comments
NEW YORK, NY (June 16, 2011) – Gleason’s Gym owner Bruce Silverglade, NABF featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano and award-winning boxing artist Gabe Parillo, Jr. will be special guest speakers Tuesday night (June 21, starting at 7 PM/ET) at RING 8’s monthly meeting at the historic Waterfront Crabhouse in Long Island City.
“We’re very fortunate to have such a diverse group of speakers this month,” RING 8 president Bob Duffy said. “They have a lot of valuable experience and interesting stories, both in and out of the ring. All of our members are looking forward to listening and meeting this boxing trio.”
Silverglade, a former boxer, is a well known, highly-respected member of the New York City boxing community. He owns and operates the oldest active boxing gym in the world (circa 1937), historic Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn.
Undefeated Serrano (10-0-1), fighting out of Brooklyn, captured the women’s NABF featherweight title last Saturday via a first-round knockout of her opponent at Roseland Ballroom.
Parillo is recognized as one of the foremost painters in boxing. His works include legends such as Muhammad All, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier and many more. His book is entitled, “The Boxing Art of Gabe Parillo.”
Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, RING 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association — hence, RING “8” — and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.
RING 8 is fully committed to supporting less fortunate people in the boxing community that may require assistance in terms of paying rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.
Go on line to www.Ring8ny.com for more information about RING 8, the largest group of its kind in the United States with more than 350 members. Annual membership dues is only $25.00 and each member is entitled to a buffet dinner at RING 8 monthly meetings, the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August.
