Catchpole Predicts Sweet Revenge Against Spence On Saturday
Posted on | June 15, 2011 | No Comments
This coming weekend Dagenham’s Joe Catchpole will be looking for retribution against Scunthorpe’s Steve Spence, the man who put the only blemish on his otherwise perfect record when they last met.
The rematch, between Catchpole and Spence, will take place at York Hall in Bethnal Green this Saturday, on the undercard of two time World Featherweight Champion Choi Tseveenpürev bout against Australia’s former IBO World Featherweight Champion ‘Action’ Jackson Asiku at Spencer Fearon’s Hard Knock Boxing promotions ‘Summer Smash’ event.
When the pair first locked horns, back in November at the Magna Centre in Rotherham, Catchpole had a perfect three wins in three outings and was quite rightly the bookies favourite. However Spence, whose record stood at two wins and four losses, had very different ideas and took the fight to Catchpole.
For four long hard rounds the pair traded hard and fast. Catchpole being the busier of the two but Spence was landing the more meaningful punches to keep the fight close throughout and no one was too surprised when referee John Foster declared the bout a draw.
Earlier today Catchpole spoke briefly on the upcoming rematch with Spence as well as about their previous meeting, “I’m looking forward to a good fight, it’s going be exciting and sweet revenge.
It will definitely not be a draw this time. Last time I struggled to make weight quite bad, I had a nutrition plan which unfortunately didn’t work, it made me crash diet at the last minute and I just had no energy left after the weigh-in.
I was quite happy to get the draw last time but this time he’ll be lucky to hear the final bell”
Joe Catchpole versus Steve Spence will feature on Spencer Fearon’s Hard Knock Boxing Promotions ‘Summer Smash’ event, headlined by the WBU/WBF Featherweight Champion of the World Choijiljavyn ‘Choi Tseveenpürev, better known as Choi The Mongolian Warrior against former IBO Featherweight Champion of the World ‘Action’ Jackson Asiku from Australia, at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday 18th June 2011
Main support, for Choi versus Jackson Asiku, sees Newly crowned Southern Area Light Welterweight Champion Darren ‘Mr R&B’ Hamilton take on Midlands Area Light Welterweight Champion Dave Ryan for the British Masters Light Welterweight title.
A top class undercard in support of the two featured bouts that includes West Drayton’s sensational Light Middleweight prospect Steve O’Meara who takes on Newark’s heavy hitting A.A. Lowe in a highly anticipated eight rounder.
Worthing, Sussex’s unbeaten Lightweight prospect Alex Dilmaghani is set to face a tough battle against former Irish title challenger, West Ham’s own Mickey Coveney.
Hayes’ resident Light Middleweight war lord Robert Lloyd Taylor is back in action against Leeds hardman Tommy Broadbent.
Philadelphia, USA based Irish Middleweight Simon ‘Slick Fightin Irish’ O’Donnell makes his first visit to the York Hall to take on Doncaster’s Jason ‘Daddy Cool’ Ball.
Finally the highly rated London based Slovakian Heavyweight Marek Onda will be making his professional debut.
Tickets, priced £35 (Standard seated) and £60 (Ringside) for the ‘Summer Smash’ event are available on-line now at www.tkoboxoffice.com, in person at The TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or The Real Fight Club, 2-6 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3NQ or from any boxer appearing on the show. THE LATE GENARO “CHICANITO” HERNANDEZ TO RECEIVE INAUGURAL LOPEZ FAMILY “SALUTE TO GREAT CHAMPIONS AWARD” SATURDAY, JUNE 25 AT FIRST PICO RIVERA SHOW
Posted on | June 15, 2011 | No Comments
Pico Rivera–It is only fitting that one of the great Los Angeles boxing champions will receive the very first Salute To Great Champions award, and that champion will be Genaro “Chicanito” Hernandez. On Saturday, June 25th in the boxing ring at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena as part of Opening Night of the Inaugural Boxeo en El Pico Rivera boxing and MMA series presented by Roy Englebrecht Promotions; Leonardo Lopez Sr. and Fernando Lopez, the operators of the arena will present the Hernandez family with a specially designed sculpture to signify the Salute To Great Champions award.
Genaro is the first recipient of this award not because he was a eight time world boxing champion….not because he just recently lost his life with a rare form of brain cancer….he is receiving this honor because he is one of the classiest, most decent champions Los Angeles has ever produced!
With a sterling 38-2 pro record with his only losses coming from Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, and super featherweight world titles in the WBC and WBA, Hernandez has been a true Los Angeles warrior. Genaro was born in South Central Los Angeles, trained in South Central, sparred in South Central, and has kept himself grounded over the years by his ties to South Central LA.
The opening night action will feature a hybrid fight show promoted by Roy Englebrecht Promotions that will feature three pro boxing bouts and three pro mixed martial arts bouts, and will have a real local flavor. Headlining the six bout card will be two local fighters in separate bouts. Whittier prospectHumberto Zatarain who is trained by Oscar Muniz will look to stay undefeated and move to 2-0 and will face Martin Delgado out of Ontario in a lightweight matchup. In a junior lightweight female bout, Maywood’s Lissette Medel at 2-1 will face Coachella’s tough Adriana Leal.
MMA action will feature Pico Rivera’s own Matt Ruiz (1-1) facing Duarte’s Brandon Michael (2-2) in a heavyweight three rounder, and Long Beach’s Sebastian Lopez (1-1) meets North Hollywood’sCarlos Urquilla (1-1) at middleweight.
Other local fighters on the Saturday, June 25th show include Maywood’s Rigoberto Flores in his pro debut, and South Gate heavyweight Martin Santizo also in his pro debut.
Tickets priced at only $35 for floor seats and only $10 for Grandstand general admission. Tickets are on sale by calling 562-695-0747. Pico Rivera Sports Arena is centrally located off the 605 Freeway at the 60 freeway between Los Angeles and Orange Counties

SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino Goes On the Record with Takedown Wrestling
Posted on | June 15, 2011 | No Comments
In a revealing interview, SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino goes One on One with Takedown Wrestling’s Scott Casber. Voicing his support of wrestling, Iamarino talks of additions to the Southern Conference, challenges facing college sports, athletic directors and their tough decisions. Iamarino also talks about conference realignment and what the future may hold for the athletes served by the SoCon and other great conferences around the country. On a personal note, Commissioner Iamarino’s candid remarks and open thought process made this an interesting and revealing interview for me, one I think you’ll enjoy. Thanks for listening. Scott Casber
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has added three universities as associate members in the sport of wrestling, it was announced Monday. Campbell University, Gardner-Webb University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will join the league beginning with the 2011-12 season.
The addition of the three schools, in conjunction with UNCG’s discontinuation of its program following the 2010-11 season, will bring the conference’s wrestling membership to eight schools.
“The addition of these three programs should help solidify the sport of wrestling in the Southern Conference,” said conference commissioner John Iamarino. “We are confident the new members will lead to a more exciting championship and greater opportunities to advance SoCon wrestlers to NCAA postseason competition.”
Campbell, located in Buies Creek, N.C., and Gardner-Webb, situated in Boiling Springs, N.C., are familiar to SoCon teams, as four of six league teams competed against the Camels in dual meets last season while the Runnin’ Bulldogs faced each conference team. Campbell and Gardner-Webb are full-time members of the Big South Conference.
Campbell, which has an enrollment of 3,000 students on its main campus, has fielded a wrestling program since 1968.
Gardner-Webb, boasting a student population of 4,300, is entering its 23rd season of wrestling in 2011-12.
SIUE, a school with 14,107 students located in suburban St. Louis, has a rich wrestling tradition, including three consecutive Division II national championships in 1984, ’85 and ’86. The Cougars are members of the Ohio Valley Conference for the majority of their sports.
The Cougars, which are in their final year of transition to full Division I membership status, will become eligible to compete for the Southern Conference championship starting in the 2012-13 season.
The three new institutions will join with Appalachian State University, The Citadel, Davidson College, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Virginia Military Institute as the eight schools in the Southern Conference for wrestling.
The Southern Conference, which first held a wrestling championship in 1930 and has done so in each season since 1947, will conduct its 75th wrestling championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. next March. The league itself, founded in 1921, is entering its 91st season in 2011-12.
