Godfrey: My Experience Will Power Me Through

Cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (20-2, 14 KOs) is remarkably honest about his upcoming fight.

 

The Providence, Rhode Island, native will face the formidable Lateef “Power” Kayode (16-0, 14 KOs) on June 10 in the 10-round main event at Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, California, and live on the popular SHOWTIME series ShoBox: The New Generation at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

 

Why, does Godfrey think, would Kayode’s team choose him as an opponent, coming off what some called a disappointing performance against Nick Iannuzzi in which he was taken the distance for the first time.

 

“They have a lot invested in him,” he explains. “They have a lot of confidence in him and they have to move him along. They can’t put him in with guys who are going to fall down. They’re taking a huge step up in facing me and I applaud them for it.”

 

In fact, Godfrey says despite his wealth of greater experience, he’s not at all bothered by being chosen as an opponent that Team Kayode thinks will make their fighter look good. “Not at all. I understand the business of the game. I’m coming off a knockout loss. He has a lot of power probably and they’re probably hoping to capitalize on something they saw in my last fight. I don’t feel any disrespect at all.”

 

Godfrey even admits he’s a fan of Kayode’s work.

 

“For the limited amount of experience, he really can fight. He’s good with the basics. He uses the fundamentals really well. He has a great jab. He works behind certain punches and doesn’t seem to get rattled in there. I’m impressed with him. He makes for a dangerous fight because he has power.”

 

Despite all the respect he pays his foe, Godfrey says he’ll prove to be too much to bite off for the red-hot, but relatively new prospect.

 

“I think in this fight, my experience is going to take over. I’ve been trough some adversity in my fights, getting off the canvas, having my eye shut in the first round and coming back to win it. That experience will help power me through this fight. He has had an easy time all the way through. I haven’t.”

All tickets for tonight’s York Hall showdown have gone

Boxing fans have snapped up all the tickets for tonight’s Eddie Hearn promoted Prizefighter Welterweights II show at York Hall, Bethnal Green – the final show of the series is a complete sell-out.

The 19^th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournament sees an all-star cast of fighters line-up to claim the £32,000 winner’s cheque, with the action live on Sky Sports 2 and HD2 from 8pm.

Fans with tickets for the night should get there early to get a seat, with doors opening at 6.30pm.

The opening quarter-final of the night sees former British champion Kevin McIntyre face unbeaten Essex man John-Wayne Hibbert. The winner of that bout will take on either former WBC World champ Junior Witter or Aylesbury’s Nathan Graham in the first semi-final.

Witter’s old foe Colin Lynes is in the third quarter-final, and the Prizefighter Lightweight runner-up takes on unbeaten Cheshunt fighter Bobby Gladman. The winner of that bout will reach the second semi-final against fancied Moroccan-born Islington boxer Yassine El Maachi and Bermondsey-based Irishman Peter McDonagh.

Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford or Nick Hinchliffe to compete for vacant titles

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada): Aggression MMA and Armageddon Fighting Championship (AFC), two of Canada’s top fight promotions, today announced an unprecedented agreement that will affect upcoming events. Here are the details:

 

Nationally-ranked welterweight stars Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (15-3) and Nick “Juggernaut” Hinchliffe (18-7) will be facing off with one another in the main event of Aggression’s “Confrontation”this Friday, June 10^th, at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton. If Ford wins the fight, he will face off with one of Aggression’s top welterweights for the vacant Aggression MMA Welterweight Championship at an Aggression event this fall. If Hinchliffe takes home the victory, he will tangle with one of Armageddon’s top 170-ers for the vacant AFC Welterweight Championship at an AFC event in the fall.

 

This business development is quite unique, in that most MMA promotions don’t cross-promote or work together. However, the heads of both promotions are excited at the opportunity to work together and benefit one another.

 

“I like the Aggression guys a lot,” explained Darren Owen, AFC President. “I like Moin and Harvey and their vision, and true intentions, and I have no problem working with them more in the future.”

 

“Darren has helped us out several times in finding last-minute opponents, putting us in touch with managers…their spirit is very much cooperative. And working together for the fans and the sport…it just makes sense,” stated Moin Mirza, Aggression MMA Co-Owner. “I don’t think either of us have a ‘crabs-in-a-bucket’ mentality, trying to pull other promoters back in. There is room in this sport for promoters that are well-intentioned, and have the best interest of the fans in mind.”

 

In regards to the Ford-Hinchliffe fight, Owen had this to say: “It’s two very tough, top Canadian welterweights in a title-worthy fight. It’s a fight Canadian fight fans want to see. I think the winner is well-deserved of a title shot.”

 

In addition to the Ford-Hinchliffe main event, “Confrontation” will also showcase two-time world Muay Thai champion Shane “Shaolin” Campbell (4-1), KO artist Rio Wells (4-1), submission wizard Luke Harris (6-1), and the MMA debut of world Muay Thai champion Levi Krupe. More details will be announced shortly.

The main event will be an eight round bantamweight fight featuring undefeated Juan Dominguez of Brooklyn, New York via Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic taking on an opponent to be named for the New York State title.

Dominguez has a perfect mark of 7-0 with five knockouts and the twenty-five year old has taken out his last five opponents within three rounds.

In his last bout, Dominguez stopped undefeated Gabriel Gomez in three rounds at the Cordon Bleu on March 4th.

The eight round co-feature will pit popular Eileen Olszewski taking on Melissa McMorrow in a battle for the New York State Super Flyweight bout.

Olszewski of New York has a record of 7-2 and has fought all over the world and is a former world champion

She has won two in a row which includes an eight round unanimous decision over Anastasia Toktaulova on December 17th in Miami

McMorrow of San Carlos, California has a record of 4-2-3 has fought good competition.

She held undefeated fighters, Amaris Quintana (1-0 & 2-0-1) to draws in their two encounters.

McMorrow will be making her second consecutive trip to New York as she lost a unanimous decision to Keisher Mcloed-Wells (3-1) on February 9th at BB Kings in Times Square.

In a third New York State title bout, Jonathan Cuba (5-3, 4 KO’s) will take on Ariel Duran (7-2, 4 KO’s) in an eight round bout for the New York State Lightweight championship.

Cuba of New York is known as a tough hard punching fighter who is willing to take on all comers.

Duran of The Dominican Republic won his first six bouts and now he will be making his American debut as he as previously fought all of his fights in his homeland.

In a six round Welterweight bout, current New York State Welterweight champion, Martin Wright will compete in a non-title bout against Willie Walton.

Wright (9-1-2, 4 KO’s) of Brooklyn won the New York State championship with an exciting split decision victory over Mike Ruiz on May 19th.

Walton (4-4 with all of wins coming by stoppage) is from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Popular Welterweight Tommy Rainone (14-4, 4 KO’s) of New York will look to make it two in a row when he takes on an opponent to be named in a six round bout.

Edward Valdez (4-8-2, 3 KO’s) of New York will take on Nalo Leal (3-11-1, 1 KO) of Airway Heights, Washington in a six round Lightweight bout.

Super Middleweight Travis Peterkin (2-0, 2 KO’s) of Brooklyn will look to stay perfect when he takes on Terrence Anderson (2-4, 1 KO) of San Antonio Texas in a bout scheduled for four rounds.

Rounding out the card will be the dynamic Burrell Twins in separate bouts.

The Burrell’s from Brooklyn, New York via London, England in four round bouts that will feature Deano (2-1, 1 KO) & Scotty (3-0, 2 KO’s). Each will see action in Lightweight bouts against opponents to be named.

Eight contenders for Tuesday night ready for York Hall showdown

The eight contenders for Prizefighter Welterweights II live on Sky Sports 2 and HD2 at 8pm tomorrow night (June 7) weighed-in today – with rivals Yassine El Maachi and Peter McDonagh exchanging words before their quarter-final clash.

El Maachi and McDonagh meet in the fourth bout of the night and the pair goaded each other as they hit the scales. The winner of their grudge match will face the winner of Colin Lynes and Bobby Gladman in the second semi-final, and former British and European champ Lynes reckons that Prizefighter is a make or break night for his career.

It’s a second attempt at Prizefighter glory for Lynes after he lost in the Light-Welterweight final to Gavin Rees in 2009. After his runner-up showing in the tournament he challenged Ajose Olusegun for the Commonwealth title in April 2010 and was knocked out in the eighth by the champ, but he bounced back with a tight points triumph against Bradley Pryce in February.

“If I don’t do well in this, you could ask ‘where does someone like me go?’ but I’m not even asking that question,” said Lynes. “I’ve been in Prizefighter before and that’s an advantage and I’m feeling really good right now after eight weeks solid training.

“I was thrown straight back in after losing to Olusegun, there was no warm-up fights, and I did a number on Pryce. I was in the gym within three months of the Olusegun fight. I was helping out Paul McCloskey with some sparring over in Belfast and that proved to me I still had it.

“I then changed my training regime and went with Jimmy Tibbs. It’s given me a new lease of life and I feel a young man again.

“I’ve got great movement and am throwing punches accurately. Age has never been a problem for me and I will go on as long as my body tells me I can, and right now I’m feeling great.”

Kevin McIntyre faces John-Wayne Hibbert in the opening bout of the night and the winner will face either Nathan Graham or former WBC World champion Junior Witter in the first semi-final.
