Trout Ready for First Defense!

WBA Light Middleweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout (22-0, 13 KOs) is primed and ready for his latest mission to Mexico.

 

Trout will make his first title defense against Sonora, Mexico’s David “The Destroyer” Lopez (40-12, 23 KOs) on June 11 at the Auditorio Miguel Barragan in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

 

It will be business as usual for Trout – most of his career highlights, thus far, have occurred south of the border. The Las Cruces, New Mexico, native won the WBA Continental Americas championship in Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico, in 2009 and then won the world title in Jalisco, Mexico, last February.

 

“For some reason, I think they like me down there,” he laughs. “I don’t know why. I keep going to Mexico and beating up Mexican fighters. I like it down there because they are still so passionate about boxing. Boxing is alive and well in Mexico. They flock to the weigh-ins and press conferences. During the fight they will boo and throw stuff, but it’s all good. I really enjoy that part. You don’t get that in the States anymore.”

 

Trout says winning the championship has given him a boost in training.

 

“When I won the title, I felt like my job had just started. I felt like I had just entered the big leagues, so I worked even harder in the gym for this fight. Winning the championship, for me, was like graduating from high school. I feel great. I brought in some good fighters to spar with from the Baltimore and Washington area, Cecil McCalla, Maxell Taylor and Siju Shabazz. They’re all quick and they got me sharp and strong.”

 

The personable 25-year-old southpaw claims it took him a while to realize he was a champion. “For the first three weeks, it didn’t even sink in. Then one night, I was looking at the belt and I said ‘holy smoke. I’m world champion!!! I ran out onto my street and yelled ‘The champ is here!’ It was amazing; something I dreamed about since I was a kid.”

 

Trout says he looks at fighting Lopez as another step toward his ultimate goal.

 

“He’s a very tough guy. He’s much avoided and for good reason. His losses were early in his career. He’s strong. But, I’m not impressed. He’s had some impressive wins, but I’m not impressed. I take nothing away from him, but I’m smarter and a better fighter. I can figure him out, but if he does something to upset my game plan, I have three hundred more I can go to. He has no answers for me. I’m the best and I’m ready to prove it against the best. Until they give me that chance, I’ll beat up guys like this and wait.”

Gonzalez Named Prospect of the Month by Prestigious Latino Boxing Site

Considered one of the top young prospects from Puerto Rico, Gonzalez was impressive in knocking out former The Contender contestant Rudy Cisneros in seven rounds at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California, and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights on May 13. The 21-year-old’s record now stands at an eye-catching 13-0 with 13 KOs. When the undefeated Tyler King (3-0, 2 KO’s, 1 submission) takes on Bellator veteran Randy Smith (11-9-1, 5 KO’s, 5 submissions) June 17^th in Mansfield, Massachusetts for the vacant AFO heavyweight championship, it is believed that he will be the first NFL veteran to fight for a professional mixed martial arts title.

“Tyler King has always been an impressive athlete, but has really rounded out his mixed martial arts game over the past year and become the heavyweight prospect to watch out for in the New England scene.” AFO President Pete Dilorenzo said recently.

King, who had NFL stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Diego Chargers, is part of a list that includes Herschel Walker, Matt Mitrione and Marcus Jones as NFL vets who have tried their hands at MMA. However, he’ll be the first of any of them to fight for a title.

NFL players have found mixed success inside the MMA cage. The afore mentioned Walker has done well against carefully picked opposition in Strikeforce, Jones did well on the regional circuit before retiring after his lone official UFC bout and Mitrione is considered one of the fastest rising prospects in the UFC heavyweight division. Former Detroit Lions Wide Receiver Johnnie Morton was KO’d in his lone MMA appearance so bad that he needed to be taken out of the ring in a stretcher.

Prior to turning pro, King accrued an unbeaten record in a brief amateur career. He made his pro debut at AFO New Year’s Redemption this past January. He trains out of Connor’s MMA in Norwood, MA and is a graduate of the University of Connecticut where he was a standout on the football field. His father, Steve King, played for the New England Patriot’s in the 70’s and famously intercepted Joe Namath twice in one game.

Undefeated Amanda Serrano Fights for NABF title

NEW YORK (June 6, 2011) – Undefeated super featherweight Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano fights at home for her first professional title Saturday night, June 11 at the historic Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

 

The 23-year-old Serrano (9-0-1, 5 KOs), a native of Puerto Rico who is now fighting out of Brooklyn, faces Jennifer Scott in an eight-round bout for the vacant North American Boxing Federation title.

 

“I’m the best female fighter in New York City and I’m going to prove it June 11^th,” said the slick-boxing younger sister of former world lightweight contender, Cindy Serrano. “My sister fought for a couple of titles and I won the New York Golden Gloves, but this is my first title shot as a pro and I’m ready and prepared to win. My goal is to win the world title and then fight in Puerto Rico. (Amanda was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Brooklyn when she was one)

 

“This is my first fight in New York City as a professional boxer. I’m very excited to know that I’m going to have a lot of family, friends and fans there supporting me. I want them all to see how far I’ve progressed. It’s going to be a fun night.”

 

Serrano would have preferred to fight the former NABF champion, Maureen Shea, but she was stripped of the belt. “She has no heart,” Serrano blasted Shea. “She was offered a fight against me but turned it down and was stripped. Maybe if she has a heart transplant we can fight in the future. It would have been nice – Brooklyn vs. Bronx – if she took the fight.

 

“I want to be the face of women’s boxing. I can box and brawl. I want to be a role model for girls to look up to. My opponent for this fight doesn’t have a great record (2-3, 2 KOs) but she’s tough and coming to fight. She’s an undefeated MMA fighter, too. I never take anybody lightly. Look what happened to Maureen Shea. She was knocked out by a fighter with a 2-2 record. My last opponent (Ela Nunez) had never been knockout until I stopped her and I want to be the first to knockout Scott.”

 

Serrano also wants to be proudly displaying her new NABF title belt around her waist the day after her fight, hopefully, on a float in the New York City Puerto Rican Day Parade.

 

“No female fighter sacrifices like Amanda,” Boxing 360 Founder & CEO Mario Yagobi noted. “She’s an exciting fighter with a great future. Bob (Duffy, Boxing 360 Director of Boxing) worked very, very hard to make this title fight happen. We’d like to thank the NABF for sanctioning it. Amanda is working hard to be world champion. Amanda is presently rated No. 4 by independent source WBAN, as well as No. 6 by the WIBA.

 

“Amanda’s main goal is to win a world title and this is her first step,” Duffy commented. “She’s fighting at home the night before the Puerto Rican Day parade. I want to thank the show’s promoters, Lou DiBella and Gary Shaw, for having this title fight on their card.”

It’s Day 5 of the grueling journey across America on a bike! Two very ambitious cyclists, former Cyclone wrestler Nels Matson and and cross country and track standout Nick Busta, are crossing the United States, over 3,800 miles from San Francisco to New York City to raise awareness and money. They’ll venture nearly 100 miles a day with one solid goal in mind – To raise $75,000 in funding for The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF).

The mission is “Bike4theCHF,” and the cause couldn’t be nearer to their hearts…
