Graham Earl: Official Statement on Michael Katsidis Rematch

Earlier today the internet was buzzing with the news that Earl-Katsidis II is possibly on the cards. The news broke after Michael Katsidis posted on his official website a statement regarding an e.mail to Michael’s manager Brendon Smith from Graham Earl, challenging Michael to a rematch of their 2007 Battle Royale.

With the approach now very much out in the public domain Graham today issued the following statement. “Ever since our last fight together I was promised a rematch and the chance to get my revenge.

Obviously I understand that there were obligations from that fight and he had the opportunities to move on.

He got the win that night. He put me down a few times then I put him down. We were having a war in the fourth and fifth and I believe I won those two rounds and the fight was in the balance at that stage. If the fight had continued I believe I would have won.

Last time it was in my own back yard, this time it looks like it may be in his. I love the challenge and will do the job properly and get the result.

A lot of people are saying that Graham Earl is finished, what they forget is that I fought at such a high level, I was a Championship fighter. I didn’t fight that many four rounders in my career they were mainly ten and twelve round Championship fights.

I recently opened my own gym and started my own promotions business, but I’ve always remained training. The last three months I’ve stepped the training up, I’m pushing myself that bit harder and I intend to go into full training for this fight shortly. I’ll be more than ready.

Most fights these days are not great at all, people are paying good money and not getting the fights they deserve.

Earl-Katsidis II will give fans the kind of fight they want and deserve. It would be a great fight and I believe the public deserve this fight to go ahead. “

Further announcements regarding the the proposed Earl-Katsidis II are expected from both Michael Katsidis and Graham Earl in the near future.

Boxing Channel continues it’s series of live boxing shows with the match between the 23 year old Vasquez and Michael Carrero. Vasquez, from San Jose, Costa Rica, is 25-0 and highly regarded in the super featherweight division. Carrero, a 28 year old Nicaraguan, is gunning for the upset.

Changes in the life of Rashad Evans? Not really. Evans is a former UFC champion who’s looking for what’s been promised to him. An opportunity to win back his title. He’s a father of 2, little Rashad and his little princess Nia. One of the changes that may be evident is his departure from Greg Jackson’s MMA camp. Now he trains in Florida along side former Iowa State wrestler and NCAA Champion and now coach Mike van Arsdale.

Light heavyweight champion

On December 27, 2008 at UFC 92 Evans faced champion Forrest Griffin for the UFC light heavyweight belt. Griffin controlled most of the first two rounds with effective striking and low kicks. In the third round, however, Evans caught a low kick and countered with a straight right hand that dropped Griffin. Evans followed Griffin to the ground and eventually managed to finish the stunned champion with ground and pound. With the victory, Evans became the new UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion. It capped off a year in which Evans won Fighter of the Year honors from Sherdog.com.

Losing the title

Evans’ first defense of the UFC Light-Heavyweight title against challenger Lyoto Machida ended in a knockout. During a flurry of punches from Machida, Rashad started trash talking Machida telling him ‘his hands were made of pillows’. Machida continued his onslaught, knocking Rashad out. This was the first loss of his career and the 15th straight win of Lyoto Machida’s career. Then, Evans went on to coach against Rampage Jackson in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights. Evans was scheduled to fight Jackson on December 12, 2009, at UFC 107, but this was cancelled due to Jackson being cast for the A-Team movie.

Meet Team Puerto Rico Five Across The Lip: Five Quick Questions For Jose “Sniper” Pedraza

Getting into a boxing ring in front of thousands where everything can go wrong at any second is pressure.

 

Getting into a boxing ring also being labeled a “super prospect” doesn’t make it any easier. But that’s what 2009 World Amateur Championships Lightweight Silver Medalist and former Olympian Jose “Sniper” Pedraza is handling remarkably well, thus far.

 

22-year-old Pedraza (2-0, 2 KOs) has already headlined a show in New York City and is one of the young fighters on the lips of boxing insiders as a certain future champion.

 

In the first of a series, he sat down for Five Across the Lip: Five Quick Questions for the members of Team Puerto Rico.

 

When did you start boxing?

 

I started boxing when I was little about 12 years old because it looked fun and its a great sport. I’ve always been involved in sports. When I started boxing, I was also a runner with the Puerto Rican National Team and then left it to only do boxing.

Tell me about your life in Puerto Rico.

 

Well my life is all my family and boxing. What I do is go to the gym everyday and stay home with my family. One of my favorite hobbies is to run. I find it liberating. I live in Cidra, Puerto Rico, with my wife and my kid and we’ve got another on the way.

Describe your boxing style.

 

Well, my style is basically to move laterally, avoid punches and connect punches. I think that’s what I do best in the ring is move laterally to avoid punches.

Name a few boxers you admire and tell me why.

 

I admire Felix “Tito” Trinidad for being so humble and giving glory to our beautiful country. And I also think he was a really great boxer. I also think Mayweather is out of this world and his ability is unparalleled.

What do you know about your next opponent?

 

Basically, not much. Judging by his record he seems that he can withstand punishment because his fights have all gone the distance. I saw a video of him of YouTube and he seems like a good fighter.

Back-to-back, on June 10 and 11 (Friday and Saturday before the 2011 National Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday) at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, Gary Shaw Productions and DiBella Entertainment will present Boricua Invasion I and II, featuring members of Team Puerto Rico Boxing, the eight-man team of Puerto Rico’s future ring stars.

 

Friday’s Boricua Invasion I will feature the unstoppable welterweight on everybody’s “one to watch” list, Thomas Dulorme (11-0, 10 KOs) vs. former world champion DeMarcus Corley; Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico’s highlight-reel welterweight KO specialist Kenny “Battlestar” Galarza (14-1, 14 KOs) vs. Puerto Rican compatriot Irving Garcia and the future superstar already fighting in main events after just two bouts, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (2-0, 2 KOs). The main bouts of Boricua Invasion I will be televised on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

 

Saturday’s Boricua Invasion II will feature four more members of Team Puerto Rico: featherweight Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle (12-0, 10 KOs) vs. Dat Nguyen; junior middleweight Jonathan “Mantequilla” Gonzalez (12-0, 12 KOs); and light welterweight Hector “El Flaco” Sanchez (19-1, 9 KOs) vs. Vincent Arroyo. Also scheduled for action are Team Puerto Rico light welterweight Jorge “Machito” Maysonet Jr. (3-0, 2 KOs); plus a special off-TV appearance by Puerto Rico-born light welterweight Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (15-0, 1 KO) of Brooklyn. The main bouts of Boricua Invasion II will be broadcast live on Showtime: The New Generation.

 

Tickets for Boricua Invasion I on Friday, June 10 are priced at $175, $125, $75, $45 and are available through Ticketmaster.com, charge-by-phone, or at any Ticketmaster outlet. On Friday, doors will open at 6:00 pm and the action starts at 6:30.

LOS ANGELES (May 27, 2011) – Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion “Bam Bam”BRANDON RIOS will make the first defense of his world title when he takes on two-time world title challenger and current Top-Five-rated contender URBANO ANTILLO, Saturday, July 9, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The co-main event will feature former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion KERMIT CINTRON and CARLOS MOLINA in a 10-round super welterweight fight.  Both bouts will be televised live on SHOWTIME®, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast.)

The four warriors have a combined record of 105-9-4 (73 KOs) – a winning percentage of 89% and a victory by knockout ratio of 70%.

The SHOWTIME Championship Boxing telecast will also include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs), defends his title for the eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs), from France.

Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), a native of Lubbock, Tex., now fights out of Oxnard, Calif. Arguably the division’s most exciting fighter, he returns to the ring on the heels of his biggest professional victory, a 10^th round TKO of defending champion Miguel Acosta, on February 26, to capture the WBA lightweight title.  An all-action fan-friendly fighter, Rios, who is trained by former IBF junior lightweight champion Robert Garcia, possesses a self-described “throwback” style and a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement as proven by the fact that eight of his previous nine victories have been by knockout.  Highlights of that streak include victories, all inside the distance, over Acosta (28-3-2), Anthony Peterson (30-0), Jorge Teron (23-1-1) and Omri Lowther (14-2), who had a combined record of 95-6-3 when they were defeated by Rios.

Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., has given sensational performances in recent fights, most notably his last one, against World Boxing Council lightweight champion Humberto Soto last December, the consensus “Fight of the Year.”  Though he lost to Soto by one point on two of the judges’ cards due to a controversial point deduction by the referee, Antillon emerged from that fight a certified world-class contender.  Trained by Abel Sanchez, 10 of Antillon’s last 11 victories have been by knockout.  Notable scalps hanging from Antillon’s belt include Rene Gonzalez (27-1-1), Tyrone Harris (23-4), former world title challenger Daniel Attah (24-4-1), and Bobby Pacquiao (28-13-3), the younger brother of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, captured the IBF welterweight title in 2006 by knocking out Mark Suarez in the fifth round.  He held the title for close to two years, successfully defending it against Walter Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano, both by knockout, before losing it to Antonio Margarito in 2008.  Since moving up in weight in 2009 Cintron has become a force in the superr welterweight division where he is still the only man to defeat top-rated contender Alfredo Angulo.  He also boasts a Draw against 2010 Fighter of the Year and World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez.

Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), a native of Michoacán, México, who fights out of Chicago, enters this fight riding a three-year, 11-bout unbeaten streak.  In 2011 he knocked out Allen Conyers (12-4) in the seventh round and had a 10-round Draw against undefeated contender Erislandy Lara (15-0).  Other highlights of Molina’s unbeaten streak include an NABO junior middleweight title victory over Danny Perez (34-5), and 10-round decision victories over Ed Paredes (21-2), and Alexis Camacho (17-1).
