“DYNASTY II: PASCAL-HOPKINS” FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Posted on | May 18, 2011 | No Comments

Montreal, Canada (May 18)…Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Jean Pascal made it clear at today’s final press conference in Montreal, Canada that they both want to let their fists do the talking when they meet this Saturday, May 21 at the Bell Center in Montreal in a bout that will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing® in the United States and on pay-per-view in Canada. Hopkins spoke first, repeating the statement he made at the final press conference in December prior to his first fight against Pascal. Pascal then approached the podium and made the same statement. Both fighters immediately exited the press conference venue, showing they are 100 percent focused on Saturday night’s WBC, WBC Diamond and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Championship fight.

Jean Pascal, WBC, WBC Diamond & Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion

“Enjoy the fight.”

Bernard Hopkins, Former Two-Division World Champion

“Enjoy the fight.”

Yvon Michel, President of Groupe Yvon Michel

“We have almost arrived at our destination. With Dawson vs. Diaconu combined with Pascal vs. Hopkins, this weekend’s event is going to be a huge.

“[The staff at] Golden Boy Promotions are people of their word, people of vision and people of action. We are very proud to be associated with them.

“We are also happy to be associated with HBO. The fact that HBO decided to buy this fight shows the high regard they hold for Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins.

“This is the fifth time that HBO has done an event from Canada and the third time on their World Championship boxing series.

“The table is set. Seven months ago when Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal met, they were like old pals and now it seems like they are mortal enemies. They can’t wait to bring their differences into the ring and give it all they have. It is no longer just about the championship; it is about which fighter is the best and which fighter is going to make history.

“I am kind of sad because I am a big Bernard Hopkins fan. I am sad because he made a bad decision to take on Jean Pascal again. It was a genius decision when he answered Jean’s call last year. It was the right decision, but now he has made the wrong decision.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

“It is a pleasure to be here in Montreal and return to Canada. The people in Canada are amazing. The fans are amazing.

“I did want to do the fight in Los Angeles, where our offices are and where Bernard has a lot of fans, but I was vetoed by Bernard. He said, ‘I want to beat Pascal in his hometown.’

“This is a historic week. This is not just history-making for boxing. It is history-making for sports…period. Bernard will make history as the oldest athlete in any sport to win a world championship again.

“This is an opportunity we don’t want to miss because we can’t turn back the clock. You want to be able to say ‘I was there. I witnessed it.’

“It is a very important moment for all of us. This victory is not going to just be for Bernard. It will be for all of us as he shows that we can do whatever we want to do if we live life the way it should be lived.”

Both Humboldt Born and Raised Kevin Dresser Talks of Frank Gotch to Takedown

Posted on | May 18, 2011 | No Comments

From Humboldt, Iowa to being the head coach of Virginia Tech, Kevin Dresser has never forgotten his roots. Dresser and his brother were some of the first to purchase a large stone for the walkway leading up to the soon to be built statue of Humboldt’s Favorite son, Frank Gotch.
In the early 1900’s Gotch was one of the best known and most competitive athletes in the world and as much as he traveled around the globe he made his home in the NW corner of the state of Iowa. Dresser told me that Gotch is one of the reasons that wrestling is strong in the Iowa.
Thursday May 19th we’ll celebrate the life and times in Gotch’s home town. You can join us from 5 to 9 PM.
Special guests include Tom Brands, Mike Chapman, Jim Raschke, Bob Steenlage, Brad Rheingans, Tony Ersland, Bill Smith and many others. Silent auctions, collectable’s hors d’ oeuvres and more.
Be a part of the future as we salute the past at Rustix restaurant at 716 Sumner Ave, Humboldt, Iowa on May 19th from 5 to 9 PM.

Connor Beats Grimes, Next Up Tough Test Against Todd On June 4th

Posted on | May 18, 2011 | No Comments

On Sunday evening Carshalton Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor scored his first professional win, over Luton’s Duane Grimes, which sets him up nicely for his upcoming showdown with former WBF Intercontinental Welterweight title challenger James Todd, at Olivia Goodwin’s Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ double title headlined event at York Hall on Saturday 4th June  2011.

With the Todd fight looming Connor was back in training, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, first thing on Monday morning in order to prepare for what is possibly his toughest fight to date.

Following a grueling workout, under the ever watchful eyes of his coach Alec Wilkey, Connor spoke briefly on the victory over Grimes before moving on to give his views on the 4th June date with Todd, “Yeah, I got my first win, boxed a guy that had one fight before, been stopped in the fight. He was a bit of an unknown quantity, I didn’t really know anything about him.

It was a bit of a double edged sword, if I won it’s a first win but there’s nothing from it really. If I lost obviously I would have lost to a guy that had lost one before and was last in the rankings.

I’m just happy to have get the win, which I always knew I was capable of, it’s still not me at a hundred percent, probably not even seventy percent. I know I’m better than that and can do a lot more even though I got the win. So it’s onwards and upwards from this point. Hopefully I’ll get another win on the 4th June

I’ve seen a video of James Todd, he’s more like a come forward type. A guy that keeps his hands high. From the video I have seen a few things that I can work on, along as I’m fit, which I will be, there’s no reason why I wont get another win and then I can move on to bigger and better things.

There’s no way I’m losing this one, I’ve built up a bit of momentum now and it’s time to capitalise on that. I’m going to move forward and start getting somewhere now.

It don’t bother me at all that he’s fought for a title, what does that mean, nothing, he got beat anyway, he got well bashed, he got stopped. If things go the way I want them to go it’ll be a repeat result. Hopefully I’ll stop him again.

I’m going out there to win obviously,I want to do it in style and show everyone what I am capable of. “

Danny ‘Cassius ‘ Connor versus James Todd will feature on the undercard of Olivia Goodwin’s Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’, double title headlined event will take place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.

Co-headlining the show are International Masters Lightweight Champion Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett, who will be defending his crown for the first time against former Kenyan Super Featherweight Champion Geoffrey ‘The Tiger’ Munika, and former Super Middleweight supremo Toks Owoh, who was originally due to face Tony Conquest for the British Masters Cruiserweight title until Tony damaged his hand in training.

The massive 16 bout card also features Connor’s TKO team mates Beckton based Dutch Cruiserweight sensation Mitchell Balker, who gets a stern test against Welsh hardman Hari Miles, Chelsea based Iraqi Heavyweight Ali Adams, Thamesmead Light Middleweight Nathan Weise, Islington Welterweight Brett O’Callaghan and Plumstead Light Middleweight Sam Standing, all against yet to be named opponents.

Amongst the established stars taking part on 4th June are Luton’s Michael ‘The Real Chunky’ Devine, who takes on Trowbridge’s ‘Dirty’ Dan Carr in a four round Lightweight contest, the sensational Woolwich based Albanian Super Middleweight Eder Kurti, Brentwood Middleweight Kris Agyei-Dua and Minster Kent’s popular Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate.

Making their professional debuts at the ‘Search & Destroy’ event are Lightweight Billy Lavelle, who is sure to be tested hard by the experienced Sid Razak, former unbeaten unlicensed fighter Mark ‘PeeWee’ Adams, who will face Louis Byrne. As well as Finchley based Polish Lightweight Marcin Marczak, Middleweights William Cayzer and Diego Burton, who all face yet to be named opponents.

Tickets, priced £35 (Standard seated) and £50 (Ringside) for the Search and Destroy event are available on-line now atwww.tkoboxoffice.com, in person at The TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA or from any boxer appearing on the show.
