UFC AND STATION CASINOS FACING NEW BATTLES

The UFC and Station Casinos have both been making headline news over the past few weeks. The two entities typically keep their operations wholly unique without any major overlap. Yet, in many ways these two companies with brothers Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta III at the helm have been suffering from some of the same woes. While the brass at Station Casinos grapple with local Culinary Union workers and a massive National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Complaint against the casino chain, the UFC recently held a fighter summit at Red Rock Casino (A Station Casino property) and announced measures that appear designed to make sure a fighter’s union never materializes. The unspoken message to the MMA practitioners in attendance seemed to say to all of them that the one thing UFC definitely doesn’t stand for is Union Friendly Company.

Mitchell Embarrasses Quinn via First Round Knockout

PRIMM, Nev. (May 14, 2011) – Up-and-coming lightweight prospect Sharif “The Lion” Bogere fought to a close – and bloody – unanimous decision victory over Ray Beltran by the scores of 97-93 and 96-94 twice from Buffalo Bill’s Star of the Desert Arena inPrimm, Nev. In the co-feature, top American heavyweight prospect Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell knocked out Evans Quinn at 2:38 of the first round on ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME.

Bogere (20-0, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas, Nev., and Beltran (24-5, 16 KOs) of North Hollywood, Calif., battled for ten blood-filled rounds before the judges declared Bogere the winner. Bogere had the momentum early as both men established their game plans. Beltran kept heavy pressure – and his weight – on Bogere to tire out the younger fighter and prevent him from getting into a rhythm. Bogere used his speed and volume punching to make his mark through the first several rounds.

Head butts dominated a large portion of the fight with Beltran suffering from a cut just above his left eyebrow in the third before returning the favor just below Bogere’s left eyebrow in the fourth. Both men punched, landed and bled in the middle of the ring for most of the fifth before Beltran landed some hard lefts to finish the round with the upper hand.

Beltran’s plan to take Bogere into deep water seemed to be coming together by the eighth, as the pressure seemed to be affecting the Las Vegas resident. Beltran rocked him with a big left uppercut and a short left that forced Bogere to lunge in an attempt to hold before eventually hitting the canvas. It was not ruled as a knockdown. Later in the eighth, Beltran slipped while trying to land a homerun punch.

One last cut-causing butt reared its ugly head in the ninth as blood poured from Beltran’s hairline. Despite the crimson streaked faces of each fighter, the two men battled until the final bell of a fantastically close fight that thoroughly pleased the crowd.

In the telecast’s first bout, Mitchell (22-0-1, 16 KOs) of Bradywine, Md., steamrolled over a completely apathetic Quinn (20-6-1, 18 KOs) of Bluefields, Nicaragua, in the scheduled 10-round heavyweight affair that didn’t go much past the first bell. Mitchell began the bout by popping his jab through Quinn’s lax guard. Quinn responded with a few flurries of wild punches, but Mitchell was unfazed and continued to pressure the Nicaraguan.

As the round entered the final minute, Mitchell connected with some hard shots including a left to Quinn’s head that was followed by some body blows and one last right that caused Quinn to drop to his knees. Referee Joe Cortez counted to 10 as Quinn looked up and shook his head to confirm that he would not continue.

After the fight, Mitchell commented, “He couldn’t handle my power. He couldn’t handle it.”

‘What Crossroads?’ Asks Kendall Holt

“What crossroads?” asks defiant former WBO Light Welterweight World Champion Kendall Holt when asked if his next fight could make or break his career.

 

“After I beat Julio Diaz, I’ll back in the top five in the world!”

 

Holt (26-4, 14 KOs), who faces former IBF Lightweight Champion Diaz tonight in the main event of the Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing event at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights, does have a point.

 

It is a stretch to say a fighter rated #8 WBC, #10 WBA, #15 IBF and #8 WBO, who was considered one of the best junior welterweights in the world, and had the consensus #1 fighter in the division on the floor less than two years ago, will be finished if he loses one more fight.

 

Still anyone who saw his performance against South Africa’s Kaizer Mabuza in 2010 might feel differently.

 

Holt looked like a shadow of himself, laying on the ropes taking punishment without firing many of the flashy, powerful combinations that have become his stock and trade.

 

So what’s going to be different?

 

“My preparations have been totally different for this fight. I have corrected my problems with balance and improved my leverage. Count on a faster and harder-hitting Kendall Holt than you’ve ever seen before.”

 

Holt says he takes nothing away from opponent Diaz, but doesn’t foresee having any problems with him. “I respect Julio. He’s a tough veteran and a world champion. He’ll do what fighters always try to do to me, which is to put pressure and go to the body, but I have an answer for that: power. I’m going to be hitting so hard he won’t be able to take it.”

 

Despite what the experts are saying, Kendall Holt isn’t boxing tonight to prove he’s not finished. Tonight’s fight will be about getting the fighter he truly wants back into the ring.

 

“I’m going to beat Timothy Bradley in a rematch and then fight him again in trilogy. That’s what I’m going to do.”

 

Golden Girl No More! Seniesa Estrada Turns Professional

Tucked away on the undercard of tonight’s ESPN3 Friday Night Fights — Kendall Holt vs. Julio Diaz broadcast from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, is a young lady making a life-changing decision.

 

Not the decision to get in the ring, she’s been doing that since she was a young child.

 

To get in the ring as a professional is a huge choice for East Los Angeles’ Seniesa Estrada, considering the excellent chance she had to become one of the USA’s first women’s gold medalists in boxing.

 

The case for going to the Olympics.

 

112-lb Estrada’s list of amateur accomplishments is nearly endless. Ranked #1 in the world, she went 87-4 while winning over 12 national titles as a junior and senior including the USA Championships, the Junior Olympics, the National Golden Gloves, the PAL Nationals and the Ringside World Championships.

 

The case for turning professional.

 

“It’s what I want to do,” she explains. “In my heart, it’s what I want to do.”

 

And so, turning aside the historically significant opportunity to add “gold medalist” to her resume, 18-year-old Estrada will make her debut tonight against Houston’s Maria Ruiz (0-2).

 

Known for her body work and quickness, Estrada uses smarts and a tight defense to outmaneuver opponents, sometimes making them look foolish – traits she learned well from her father Joe, who trained her for many years, and trainer Dean Campos, who was brought in to help bring her to the next level. “I want to be known as a great fighter,” Estrada continues, “not as a great girl fighter, but as a great fighter – a world champion in multiple weight classes.”

 

Estrada started boxing at eight after making her father promise he would bring her to a gym. She watched a few fights and quickly decided boxing was what she wanted to do. “I’ve been a nervous wreck at every one her fights from the very beginning,” admits father Joe. “I thought it would get easier but it never did.”

 

Aware that boxing doesn’t last forever, Estrada is also currently a first-year nursing student who hopes to make her mark in boxing quickly and get back out. “The only thing holding me back is experience. I’ve fought without headgear on in the gym a few times and I find it makes me even faster and improves my reflexes.

 

Pounding away on the heavy bag and the other boxers at the Montebello PAL gym, Seniesa Estrada has decided to follow her heart in making a very important decision. When you have as much heart as she does, you have no choice but to follow it.

Network Announces Multi-Year Deal with Europe’s Premiere Kickboxing Promotion

 

DALLAS (May 13, 2011) Today, HDNet announces a long term deal with “It’s Showtime,” Europe’s leading kickboxing promotion provided by Fighting Spirit, the international fight sport programming distributor. “It’s Showtime” will make its HDNet debut with “HDNet Fights: It’s Showtime Lyon” on Friday, May 20 at 11:00 p.m. ET – immediately following the network’s broadcast of “The Voice vs. Hulk Hogan.”

In the main event of the evening, Badr Hari makes his much anticipated return to the ring against Tony Gregory. Plus, Tyrone Spong and K-1 MAX Champion Giorgio Petrosyan will also be in action.
