Shaw Electrified by Geale Performance

Promoter Gay Shaw says he is still thrilled by the performance of his new IBF Middleweight Champion, Daniel Geale (26-1, 15 KOs), who dethroned champion Sebastian Sylvester by 12-round split decision on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany.

 

“I felt like I was dreaming,” recounted Shaw. “To win a decision in Germany is making a statement. Daniel was terrific, very fast, and he stayed busy throughout and maintained a great output of punches.”

 

The Tasmanian-born boxer is the first Australian to win a belt on German soil. He won by scores of 118-110 and 118-112 on two cards, while another judge curiously had Sylvester winning 118-110 on the third card.

 

Fights with fellow world-class Australian fighters Garth Wood, Sam Soliman and Anthony Mundine are possible, but Shaw says there is no rush to announce a next move.

 

“I will speak with the team about several different opponents, and we will carefully weigh Daniel’s options. Right now we’re just celebrating his brilliant victory.”

After a “Feel Out” first round, Santana was all over Jones and dropped him two times before the referee stopped the fight 1:20 into round two.

Santana of the Bronx is now 25-3 with sixteen knockouts and will look for bigger fish to fry in the Welterweight division.

Star Boxing’s newest signees, Jr. Lightweight Emanuel Gonzalez and Super Middleweight Jason Escalera each scored stoppage victories in their debut under Joe DeGuardia’s promotional banner.

Gonzalez stopped Jacob Thornton just 1:40 into their fight when Thornton was unable to continue due to an injured leg.

Escalera stopped the durable Mustafah Johnson in the second round of their scheduled six round bout.

With the wins, Escarlera is now 11-0 with ten knockouts while Gonzales is now 8-0 with seven knockouts.

Two more prospects remained undefeated with knockout wins as Isouf Kinda went to 10-0 with a third round stoppage over third round stoppage twenty-one fight vet Jorge Ruiz.

Former two time New York Golden Glove winner Stivens Bujac needed just fifty-five seconds to take out Chuck Dillard.

Last Saturday, May 7, the four Semifinalists in the Super Six World Boxing Classic on SHOWTIME^® participated in a press conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals will begin this Saturday, May 14 (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) when undefeated Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KOs) will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight world title against former world champion Arthur Abraham (32-2, 26 KOs) at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

On Saturday, June 4 (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) the Seminfinals will continue when Carl Froch(27-1, 20 KOs) risks his World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Middleweight title against Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) at Adrian Philipps Ballroom of Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

“The Super Six has been a long and winding road and it’s had its bumps in the road but that was the idea, to see which fighter would persevere through a series of major fights against the best competitors.  The Super Six was designed to pit the best super middleweights in the world against one another and come out with one winner.

“The Super Six has been a topic of conversation the last couple years and that’s what boxing needs: longevity. These fighters’ names have been in the headlines from fight to fight because each bout has so many implications, so much relevance. When Andre fights Arthur, it’s not just about those fighters. It’s about how that fight affects Carl, how it affects Glen. The tournament also gets rid of the myth that a loss on a fighter’s record is a big deal. When the best fight the best, someone is going to lose.

“Arthur Abraham is the epitome of what this tournament stands for. He was the heavy favorite after a dramatic knockout over Jermain Taylor. But after two setbacks, he never gave up and I expect we will see a tremendous performance from Arthur on May 14.

“They call Glen Johnson the road warrior. And he is a warrior but more importantly, a tremendous person. After a decade at light heavyweight, he dropped the weight, looked good, looked young and won his first Super Six fight with a big knockout against Allan Green, whom no one had ever knocked out before.

“Carl Froch is a tremendous champion. Look at his road in the Super Six. He had a dramatic win in a close fight against Andre Dirrell, then he lost to Mikkel Kessler, and there’s no shame in that; Kessler is a tremendous fighter. But then he came back with the fight of his life against Abraham.

“At the beginning of the tournament, people thought Andre Ward was untested and young. But look how we have we seen him rise to become the tournament favorite.

“Putting five promoters in a room is my worst nightmare. But it launched FIGHT CAMP 360°, which has produced some great television. Thanks (to all the boxers for) their commitment.”

“I think Carl showed us a good blueprint (against Abraham) but I’m going to do it my own way.

 

“I’m very desperate, too.  I don’t think people understand that.  I try to train with a sense of urgency.  Whether Abraham had beat Carl Froch in convincing fashion or if he was in the situation he is now with two losses, I would still train the same.  I train until it hurts.

 

“I want to thank SHOWTIME just for the opportunity.  Outside of this tournament, I can guarantee I wouldn’t have been able to fight the best back-to-back-to-back.  It’s also a great burden because you have to fight the best.

 

“A lot of people use the term ‘favorite’ very loosely.  But I don’t consider myself the favorite because I haven’t gotten my just dues yet. I train with a chip on my shoulder because there is more to prove.  There is still plenty of work to be done.

 

“When I prepare for Arthur Abraham, I train for the best Arthur Abraham.  I take being the WBA champion very seriously.  I respect every fighter in the sport and I train for every fight accordingly.”

Robert Guerrero Receives Bill Crawford Award for Courage in Overcoming Adversity

Photos By Paul Hernandez May 9, 2011 – Boxing luminaries came together for the 86th Boxing Writers Association of America’s annual dinner this past weekend inLas Vegas.  With his incredible story outside of the ring during a time when his wife was battling leukemia, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrerowas awarded the Bill Crawford award for “Courage in Overcoming Adversity.”  Guerrero had a remarkable year inside the ring as well, winning bouts against former Gold medalist and four-time world champion Joel Casamayor, Olympian Vicente Escobedo and former two-time champion tough guy, Michael Katsidis.   ESPN’s Dan Rafael presented Guerrero with the prestigious award stating, “How a fighter deals with the adversity being in a victory or defeat often becomes a big part of how that fighter is remembered. But fighters like all people have to deal with adversity in their everyday lives and Robert Guerrero is one of the top fighters in the world right now…fighting very well right now, very, very well.  Outside of the ring he has shown true grit doing it in a very classy manner. Robert and his family were dealing with a lot more than a boxing match.  His wife Casey who’s here with us tonight…she was hit with leukemia and she was not doing well.  She needed Robert by her side and he needed to take care of her and their kids and be with the family.  Instead of going forward with the fight (Vs. Katsidis in 2010) which is what would have been a career high payday for him at that time.  He decided to withdrawal from the bout and gave up his world championship belt, something I know he worked very hard for and remained by her side.  Casey proved to be a fighter in her own right and is now in remission.  The way he handled himself in his career during the darkest days for him and Casey is an inspiration to many.”   Robert Guerrero went on to say, “First I want to thank God.  He’s blessed me a lot and my wife is here with me today.  She’s been a year in remission and she’s cancer free.  I just want to thank Golden Boy for being by my side every step of the way when I vacated my title and had to take care of my wife.  I’m thankful to the writers for recognizing my courage outside the ring.  I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support.  I’m back now and coming to fight hard for all the fans.”   Robert looks to continue his astonishing boxing career with the biggest names in the sport.  Guerrero’s skills and experience are approaching new heights and his ring presence is demanded by fans around the world.   Mario Serrano Publicist ~ Team Guerrero

The Hitter could face old foe Colin Lynes on June 7 at York Hall

Junior Witter and Colin Lynes head the bill for the Prizefighter Welterweights II at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Tuesday June 7 – the final Prizefighter of the season.

Former WBC and WBF Light-Welterweight Champion Witter could face Lynes at the same venue that they met in 2005 when Sheffield’s Witter successfully defended his Commonwealth, European and British titles against Londoner Lynes.

Witter won his WBC crown in 2006 against DeMarcus Corley and defended it twice the following year before Timothy Bradley took it from him through a split decision in 2008.

There’s a chance for double retribution for former IBO World, British and European champ Lynes, with that score to settle against ‘The Hitter’ as well as one with Prizefighter, after he lost the Light-Welterweights final to Gavin Rees in December 2009.

Former British champion Kevin McIntyre, unbeaten prospects John Wayne Hibbert (Essex) and Bobby Gladman (Cheshunt), popular north London-based Moroccan Yassine El Maachi, Bermondsey’s Irish European title challenger Peter McDonagh and Aylesbury’s Nathan Graham complete the line-up for the 19^th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments.
