Graham Earl Signs Michael Grant – Fights Youssef Al Hamidi Named On May 7th

Former World Champion turned promoter Graham Earl has signed one time English title challenger Michael Grant to his rapidly growing stable of thoroughbred boxing prospects.

Grant is set to make his maiden outing under the Graham Earl Promotions banner this coming Saturday, at Graham’s ‘Redemption Day’ double title headed event at York Hall in Bethnal Green. Grant’s opponent has been named as tough Dewsbury, Yorkshire based Syrian Youssef Al Hamidi.

On making the announcement Graham Earl said, “Michael’s a good fighter, he’s done his apprenticeship. We know he’s a very good fighter and should be right up there challenging for more titles, the only reason he isn’t is that he doesn’t get to fight that often.

That will change now, so it’s down to him to show everyone that we made the right decision in signing him.”

Grant then spoke briefly on both signing with Graham Earl Promotions and Saturday’s showdown with Al Hamidi, “I’m really pleased that Graham has taken an interest in me.

It means so much to me as Graham is obviously going to get me the fights that I need to get and want this year. I’m really, really happy to be with Graham.

This is a now or never for me, I’ve had some time out and now I’ve really got to get out there and make a point.

Youssef is very experienced and has been in with some good names, he’s never been stopped, so he’s a really strong and durable fella. He’ll be a good come back fight for me.

I’m confident I’ll get the win, I’m much stronger at Lightweight and I expect to be getting a lot of stoppages at this weight.

I’m not saying I’m one hundred percent going to stop Youssef, he’s very strong and never been stopped in fourty odd fights, but I feel so much stronger at this weight and his record gives me more of an incentive to go for it to make a big statement on my return.”

Michael Grant, against Youssef Al Hamidi features on the Graham Earl promoted ‘Redemption Day’ event which is co-headlined by fellow TKO Boxing Gym mate Leon ‘Solid’ Williams who defends the BBBofC Southern Area Cruiserweight title against Danny Couzens at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 7th May 2011.

Co-headlining will be the eagerly anticipated Paul Morby-Daniel Cadman rematch for the Southern Area Super Middleweight title.

In addition to Michael Grant, Graham Earl has lined up a seriously strong undercard featuring some of the Country’s most exciting young warlords.

Former American Basketball star Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Oshunrinde will be hoping that his return to York Hall will be more satisfying than his previous outing there.

Oshunrinde was clearly robbed of his first win on British soil when his shortened fight with Jahmaine Smyle was declared a technical draw, following the fight being stopped, in the first round, due to a serious cut over Smyle’s right eye.

On May 7th Oshunrinde will be facing Sam Couzens, brother of Danny who faces Leon Williams.

Graham also has his exciting Light Welterweight Terry Holmes out for his third professional bout, against a yet to be named opponent. Holmes has proved to be nothing short of sensational on his two previous outings and Graham has big expectations for the heavy hitting nineteen year old from Stevenage.

Another big hitter, Belfast’s Joe Hillerby, will also be getting his third outing. Hillerby, who debuted in October 2010, has made quite an impact on the scene. No surprise really, after all he is an all action heavy hitter with a knockout finish, as proved on his debut against Gavin Putney, which lasted just 43 seconds!

His second fight, against super tough Ryan Clark, lasted the full course and turned out to be one of the most action packed fights of the night at Graham Earl’s excellent ‘Capital Punishment’ event back in January.

Lowestoft Featherweight Craig Poxton will be looking to get back to winning ways, following his loss to Grant’s opponent on Saturday Youssef Al Hamidi a year ago.

Making their professional debuts at ‘Redemption Day’ are Belfast’s Mark Ginley, Heavyweight Scott Whyley whilst former Armed Services boxer Sam Standing will be joining his TKO Boxing Gym mates Williams, Grant and Oshunrinde on the show.

Everyone at the gym is telling me that they are sorry that Hope is dead.

They are paying their respects to me as if I am the father.

I know her father.

I am only her trainer.

I am just another tourist in the country of friends’ tombstones.

John Douglas wishes that Hope ducked like he taught her when

Death entered the ring.

Hector Roca, who trained me and world champions,

Says, “It’s so sad. She’s like family.”

Bruce Silverglade says that she was part of Gleason’s gym,

A piece of its history.

She came here at twelve,

One of the early surge of female boxers.

I thought she was too proper to train with me,

Too well-brought up,

Somehow too mature for her age.

She kept coming back for ten years between charity trips

And colleges,

Like the gym had something to offer her,

Some underbelly of life that she wanted to understand

VINNY “THE LION” O’BRIEN SEEKS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN MAY 20

Welterweight prospect Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien of East Hanover has exploded onto the boxing scene, winning his first two fights by way of TKO.  The explosive 24-year-old fighter has already shown his power and determination, and looks to continue his winning streak May 20 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

 

O’Brien, who made his pro debut on PPV March 5, is looking forward to appearing on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights for the first time.

 

“I’m really excited about this opportunity and the ability to showcase my skills on a show that has such tradition in the boxing world,” said O’Brien. “I watch Friday Night Fights every week and I just want to go out there and show everyone who I am as fighter and what I can bring to this sport.”

O’Brien is quickly becoming a fan favorite to New Jersey boxing fans.  In both of his first two fights he put on a performance that was reminiscent of a young Arturo Gatti.  O’Brien was relentless with his attack and wore down his opponents punch by punch until each fight was ended.

Having garnered much attention on both a national and local level leading up to his professional debut and following his two TKO wins, O’Brien wants to continue putting on a show for his fans each time he steps into the ring.

 

“My fans are the best around and I don’t think they understand how much I value their love and support for my dream, along with how much it pushes me in my training,” said O’Brien.  “And come fight night, I want to be the hometown kid on this card and show ESPN how great my fans truly are. Ruth Simmons Announces Brown to Postpone Varsity Team Cuts (Go Local Prov-4/30)

Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons announced today that she will postpone her recommendations to the Brown Corporation concerning the future status of four varsity athletic teams until its October meeting. The wrestling, women’s skiing, and men’s and women’s fencing teams will all compete in the 2011-2012 academic year.  reprieve

The announcement is Simmons’ response to a preliminary report issued by the Athletics Review Committee suggesting that the four teams be cut in order to resolve long-standing issues about the appropriate scope and budget of Brown’s varsity athletics program. In a letter to the Brown community, Simmons explained that “the time-frame for consideration and implementation of the discontinuation of specific sports is too brief,” particularly in light of “where we are in the semester… when students are focused on final projects and exams.”

“Completing the semester without the burden or stress of addressing this issue”

“[Allowing] students to complete the semester’s work without the burden or stress of addressing this issue is sound and compassionate,” Simmons wrote. “[They] will be able to return to Brown in September with the assurance of a full year of participation in their sport as well as have the opportunity to offer additional input about the value and status of their sport before a decision is made.”

Simmons thanked the “wrestling, skiing, and fencing students and their efforts to collect information and offer testimony,” and commended them for “conduct[ing] themselves with great poise and intelligence.”

Though the suspension decision is on hold, Simmons will make several other recommendations concerning varsity athletics to the Brown Corporation at their May 2011 meeting. These recommendations include a reduction in the number of admission slots for recruited athletes, development of a plan to make necessary salary adjustments for staff and coaches, and fund raising to support improvements in financial aid and other department needs.

Jake Ellenberger Clocks out at 2:42 Wins at UFC 129, Talks to Takedown Wrestling

Jake Ellenberger sent a huge message to the rest of the UFC welterweight division by destroying Sean Pierson in just over two and a half minutes. Ellenberger quieted the pro-Canadian crowd with a thunderous left hook. The punch landed just over Pierson’s right eye and forced him to lock up. A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Pierson fell helplessly to the floor where he was saved by referee Herb Dean at the 2:42 mark of the first in the first Spike television fight at UFC 129 in Toronto.

Ellenberger (25-5, 4-1 UFC) showed some moxie by taking this fight on just 17 days notice. Brian Foster had to back out after a brain issue was discovered during a prefight scan by the Ontario Athletic Commission.

The American rolled the dice against Pierson, a solid MMA veteran, and it paid off. He’s now won four straight and is knocking on the door for a fight against a top 10 UFC welterweight. His only loss with the promotion came in his debut against Carlos Condit. That was a very close decision. Ellenberger beat the snot out of Condit in the first, but faded a bit late and lost a split decision at Ultimate Fight Night 19.
