Referees have the toughest job in sport. No one is ever 100% happy with their calls, and no matter what they do someone will have a problem with it.

But I do respect what they do, and very rarely make criticisms.

However, the time has come where I do need to speak out and levy a heavy critique on officials. Not for stopping fights early, not for being in the wrong position, and not for missing a blatant foul.

No, this criticism is for the money they are costing me as the owner of the show. I don’t find fault in the guys who work the MFC events and are able to put some dollars in their back pocket. They do a job and should get paid for it.

But I find no rationale out there that is a satisfactory explanation as to why a few particular referees are charging exorbitant fees. They have, in effect, in become “celebrity referees.”

It’s outrageous and absolutely inappropriate. These certain referees are charging anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 just to show up, bark out a catchphrase, and supervise a fight. But these fees aren’t being paid by any commission. They are paid by a show owner or promoter. And quite frankly it’s sad that some promoters feel obliged to pay them and put them front and center on a poster.

Why would they do that? Honestly, for most of them, it’s because they don’t have any talent pool to draw from so the biggest ovation of the night for anybody in the ring is for the referee. That’s a terrible statement for the sport of mixed martial arts. You don’t have much of a show if you’re paying your referee five times what you’re paying the two guys in the main event.

And how can you not call into question the ethics of these referees. Would you not expect their loyalties to be torn when some promoter is willing to pay them 10K, and that same referee is then calling the action when the promoter’s top fighters are in action.

It’s time for the commissions governing MMA to put a pay structure in place for all referees. They would be paid according to their experience, the level of competition they have overseen, and even feedback from notable fighters and insiders. There are a number of very good referees out there, including those that have worked recent MFC events. But even they shouldn’t be allowed to just toss out a price tag, or have a commission toss out one for them. There should be a pay scale in place – here’s what you get paid (plus reasonable expenses) … take it or leave it.

You don’t see referees in the NFL or NHL tossing around numbers, and then getting paid according to their individual requests. They are paid a set price by a league (in MMA’s case, a commission), and the best ones are hired for more high-profile games and playoffs.

If referees were assigned by this philosophy in MMA, I believe you would see a proper pay structure and proper protocol. You could also factor in a system where developing referees could work smaller shows to gain experience before working major events.

I will not be goaded into paying for overpriced referees. Most do a good job, but I will never pay a referee more than a fighter, and I will never pay a referee a ridiculous fee just because he’s been around for a while and has a trademark intro.

And I will not be bullied by a commission who just shoots a number in the air, expecting me to pay what they want to give a referee when it’s not their money. My staff and I have contacted referees first hand and know exactly what they will take as their fee.

I won’t just write a blank cheque for a ref because he thinks he’s worth it.

Will not happen … ever.

Prescott Enjoyed Saturday’s HBO Broadcast of Khan Fight

Hammer-fisted super lightweight contender Breidis “The Khanqueror” Prescott (23-2, 19 KOs) says he enjoyed watching HBO’s broadcast of WBA Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan’s dominant TD6 over little-known Paul McCloskey at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester last Saturday night.   “They showed me knocking Khan out in the highlights before the fight,” said the proud Colombian.   For those who don’t recall, Prescott delivered Khan (25-1, 17 KOs) a Sleep-o-Gram wrapped in leather and laid waste to his undefeated record in 54 seconds in September 2008 at the very same M.E.N. Arena.   Prescott will face Virginia via Mongolia slugger Bayan Jargal (15-1-3, 10 KOs) this Friday, April 22, in the main event of the ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” broadcast from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.   “I’ll take care of business with Jargal and then wait and see if Khan’s fight with Timothy Bradley materializes. He promised to fight me right after Bradley.”   Prescott says he’s content to wait, with the economy being what it is. “I understand Amir wants to make a little money before he faces me again and I prove once and for all what I did to him was no accident. But if the Bradley fight doesn’t come together, then let’s get it on next. After a technical decision over mystery meat, scored 60-54 on all cards and ended by a headbutt, you owe your fans an exciting fight, Amir.”

Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira Repeat Brazilian Athlete of the Year winner

MIAMI (April 18, 2011) – Unbeaten Interim WBC Latino super middleweight and UNBC middleweight champion,Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira (14-0, 11 KOs,) received his the Brazilian International Press Award’s 2010 Athlete of the Year Award last Saturday night in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

 

The 20-year-old Oliveira, rated No. 20 by the World Boxing Council, was the leading vote-getter for the second year in a row among a group of great nominated Brazilian athletes.

 

“I am honored to win this prestigious award for the second time,” Oliveira said. “I’d like to thank all my fans for supporting me with their votes. I represent all of the Brazilians living back home as well as those in the United States. Brazil is always No. 1 in my heart. We take all sports, especially boxing, serious but no matter what the final results, it always ends with Samba music and partying. There’s more to Brazilian sports than just soccer. I’m only 20 and hopefully I can keep winning this award for many years to come. I loved fighting at home in Brazil my last two fights and look forward to returning there this summer for my next fight.”

 

Oliveira was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. Backed by his family promotional company, as well as TV Globo, Michael has returned to his roots in hopes of reestablishing boxing back to the days of Brazilian boxing icons, Hall of Famer Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre, and more recent superstar Acelino “Popo” Freitas. Both legendary Brazilian boxers have supported Michael by attending his fights in Brazil.

 

TV Globo, the third-largest network in the world, committed to a two-year, six-fight commitment featuring Oliveira, whose next fight has been tentatively set for July once again in Sao Paulo. Plans also call for Oliveira to return to Brazil in September to headline a show in the capital of Brasilia, inside of a portable arena built by TV Globo.

 

“Michael’s popularity in Brazil has really taken off,” said Carlos Oliveira, father and promoter of Michael under the MO Productions banner. “Brazil is going to be the center of the sporting world as the host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics. Ortiz upsets Berto in Spectacular ‘East-West Showdown’ for WBC Welterweight Title

MASHANTUCKET, CT (April 16, 2011) – “Vicious” Victor Ortiz lived up to his nickname tonight, upsetting defending World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Welterweight Champion and previously unbeaten Andre Berto by 12-round decision, headlining the “East-West Showdown” card at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

In the first six rounds, both fighters hit the canvas twice in arguably the best fight of 2011. It culminated with what is now the 2011 Fight of the Year frontrunner, as two of the best young fighters in the world amazingly kept an electric pace from start to finish.

Ortiz came out firing right from the opening bell, cornering Berto with a series of punches, until the defending champion took a knee. Berto, however, came right back to drop Ortiz with a straight right at the end of the second round.

The non-stop action went back-and-forth in the third through fifth rounds; Ortiz’s power and aggressiveness versus Berto’s speed and quickness.

In what is certainly to be the round of the year in round six, Berto decked Ortiz again with a big right in the sixth, and looked on the verge of finishing the Ventura, CA native. However, Berto, couldn’t finish off Ortiz, who came back to drop Berto with a left cross moments before the bell sounded to end the round.

Adding to the drama, in the tenth round referee Michael Ortega penalized Ortiz a point for hitting behind Berto’s head.

In the end, Ortiz won on all three judges’ scorecards 115-110, 114-112, and 114-111 to capture the WBC welterweight division title in thrilling fashion.

“Absolutely not,” Ortiz responded to a question about this fight being redemption for his loss to Marcus Maidana. “Maidana was never in my class. I never gave him respect, especially for not giving me a rematch.

“147 lbs. is where I’m king. I want to thank Andre Berto for the opportunity. He is a real champion.”

Berto, who was having his right thumb examined after the fight, stated, “I just didn’t feel it tonight. I just couldn’t get off.”

Red-hot Puerto Rican welterweight prospect Thomas “The French” Dulorme (11-0, 10 KOs) continued to shine bright, stopping veteran Harrison Cuello in sensational fashion in the tonight’s chief supporting fight.

Dulorme dropped Cuello and then registered his 10^th consecutive knockout, when the budding star Dulorme caught his opponent with a devastating left hook, and referee Johnny Callas didn’t bother to count-out the fallen Cuello. Dulorme is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Gary Shaw Productions, and Universal Promotions, under the Team Puerto Rico banner.

“East-West Showdown: Berto vs. Ortiz,” presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions, aired live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.
