AL BERNSTEIN CALLS “JUANMA” A FAN-FRIENDLY CHAMPION

Showtime boxing analyst Al Bernstein will be at ringside calling the action with Gus Johnson for Showtime’s telecast of the Juan Manuel Lopez-Orlando Salido WBO Featherweight title match on Saturday, April 16^th.  This will be the fourth Lopez title match he has announced and he said “I look forward to doing his matches as much as any fighter I’ve ever announced in 30 years of broadcasting”

 

Bernstein called “JuanMa” a fan friendly champion, and explained why. “The two best words for the fans that you can put in front of a champion’s name  are exciting and vulnerable,  and those two words are etched in front of the name of Juan Manuel Lopez.” Even though he is 30-0 with 27 wins by KO, the take no prisoners style of Lopez has led to him being down or staggered in several of his recent fights. “Perhaps the wildest fight I’ve announced in the last five years was the  2009 Lopez fight with Rogers Mtagwa,” Al said. “In the 12^th round  Juanma was literally out on his feet for almost all of the last three minutes and yet he remained upright to win a decision—it was remarkable.”

 

On April 16^th he faces a former  world champion and all out aggressor in Orlando Salido. This Mexican brawler has power and a great chin—it could produce another rollercoaster evening for Lopez. “Salido is as live an underdog in this fight as you will ever see,  and even fighting on Lopez’ home soil in Puerto Rico, Salido has a good chance for an upset.”

Bernstein is now filing weekly reports on the CBS radio network for the upcoming May 7^th Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley. Al will serve as analyst on that Showtime pay-per-view telecast of boxing’s biggest event of 2011.

 

Boxing Channel, for which Al serves as executive producer,  now features a special two-part interview that Steve Farhood did with his longtime broadcast partner and friend Nick Charles. “I am happy that we can present this to boxing fans who have followed Nick on his courageous journey in the last two years,” Al said. NICK DIAZ TELLS HDNET’S INSIDE MMA “I DON’T SEE MUCH OF A FUTURE IN THIS SPORT FOR ME;” MANAGER REVEALS BOXING CONTRACT

DALLAS (April 14, 2011) “Inside MMA” is locked and loaded this week with an all-star line-up including four current and former world champions and a special guest host.

The program will feature complete coverage of last weekend’s Strikeforce™ event including an interview with Strikeforce™ Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz – fresh off his TKO victory over Paul Daley.

“[Strikeforce™] doesn’t have anybody else for me to fight right now, I’m better than all these guys they have,” says Diaz. “The guys they have ranked above me, I’m sure they don’t want to fight me. I don’t see much of a future in this sport for me. I honestly don’t, especially if there’s not a whole [lot] of money going on.”

Separately, Diaz’s manager Cesar Gracie tells “Inside MMA” that Diaz has signed a boxing contract to fight Fernando Vargas later this year. The contract is awaiting Vargas’s signature, but Gracie says that unless Dana White offers Diaz a fight with Anderson Silva, Nick’s next fight will definitely be in boxing.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 14, 2011) – Long before Georges “Rush: St. Pierre became a living legend and achieved rock star status in the mixed-martial-arts world, he learned how to fight in his native Canada prior to him joining the UFC, and now MMA fans in the United States have an opportunity to watch the 2-time Canadian Athlete of the Year before he became “GSP.”

His first five pro MMA fights, plus one other non-UFC match, are available for viewing through a special one-hour special, “George St. Pierre: Rush To The Top,” exclusively distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media, ), the undisputed distribution champion of mixed martial arts and boxing fights in North America.

The special includes St. Pierre’s six non-UFC fights, including his rarely seen 2002 debut, now available on cable and satellite pay-per-view via DISH Network, DirecTV, Avail-TVN and iN DEMAND, as well as via Video On Demand, for only $9.95. Check listings for replays through the entire month of April and into May.

St. Pierre, who sports an amazing 21-2-0 professional MMA career record (8 KOs, 5 submissions), studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), wrestling as well as boxing, and today he holds a third-degree black belt in Kyokushin, as well as black belts in BJJ and Gaidojutsu.

“GSP” made his MMA pro debut January 25, 2002, defeating previously unbeaten (4-0) Ivan Menjivar, in Montreal, by first-round technical knockout (punches) in UCC 7: Bad Boyz. Five months later in Gatineau, Canada, Georges captured the UCC (Canadian) Welterweight Championship, forcing Justin Bruckmann (4-1) to submit (arm-bar) in the opening round in UCC 10: Battle for the Belts 2002.His first and only UCC title defense came October 11, 2002 in Montreal, when St. Pierre stopped Travis Galbraith (5-1) in the first round at UCC11: The Next Level.

In his next fight, Georges took on Thomas Denny, who was riding a three-fight win streak January 25, 2003 into UCC12: Adrenaline in Montreal. It took St. Pierre two rounds to win for the first time as Denny was defeated by technical knockout on cuts. Denny was a US citizen so the fight wasn’t for St. Pierre’s UCC title belt.

In his fifth and last pro match before joining UFC fight, “Rush” took on UFC veteran Pete Spratt, who was coming off of a victory by submission in UFC 42 against Robbie Lawler, who went on to capture the Elite XC middleweight title. St. Pierre locked-in a rear naked choke against Spratt (12-6), who tapped-out at 3:40 of the first round in their November 29, 2003 fight in Victoriaville, Canada on theTKO 14: Road Warriors card.

Three fights after making his UFC debut, GSP bounced back from his first pro MMA loss (Matt Hughes, 1^st round submission – arm-bar) in his last non-UFC fight at TKO 19: Rage, in which he defeated Dave Strasser by first-round submission (Kimura) in Montreal.

GSP’s most notable victims include B.J. Penn (twice), Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Dan Hardy, John Fitch, Thiago Alves, and Josh Koscheck. Georges is scheduled to next defend his title belt April 30 headlining UFC 129 against Jake Shields in Toronto.

Boxer Cestone Passes Unexpectedly

Bobby Hitz and the Hitz Boxing Family are sad to announce the loss of Chicago native and once-beaten 39-year-old cruiserweight Kevin Cestone, who passed away suddenly earlier this week.

 

Cestone (5-1, 3 KOs), who returned to boxing last May after 10-year retirement, was in the process of transitioning into a trainer and starting his own boxing gym when tragedy struck. The cause of death is still unknown.

 

Cestone had worked as a stock trader in his native Chicago and was a father of three small children. He was a former five-time Golden Gloves Champion who went 67-4 as an amateur.

 

“I’ve known Kevin and his family since he was eight years old and this is a terrible tragedy,” said a still shocked Hitz. “Kevin is a member of the Hitz Boxing family and he will be sorely missed.”

 

Kevin Cestone’s wake is scheduled for Friday, April 15 in Roselle, Illinois at Salernos (located at 450 Lake St) from 5 pm to 9 pm. Church Service will be held on Saturday.
