CHRIS HOLLAND… THE INVISIBLE MAN Denver,CO –
The main event at Ring of Fire Backlash pits two men against each other that could not be more diametrically opposed. In one corner, you have Brandon Thatch, one of the most popular and hottest up and coming fighters not with the UFC. Thatch has heavy support in the community, and a presence that can be felt from magazines to constant internet chatter
And then you have Chris ‘The Hammer’ Holland.
On Sunday it was Holland that MMA.CLVR.TV was looking for at the Ground Zero MMA media day, his home gym. Ground Zero isn’t easy to find, and if you don’t know what you’re looking for, a small gym in a warehouse district lying in the shadow of Colorado Heights University, you will miss it. In that way, Chris Holland and his gym are the same.
The media day was attended by exactly one outlet, MMA.CLVR.TV, a point Nate Johnson, coach, teammate and part-owner of the gym (along with partner John Maldonado), was eager to talk about.
“We’re used to being ignored. You know who we are? We’re the place Rocky worked out at during Rocky III. Remember how the Russian was hooked up to all the machines, and Rocky was just running in snow? Grudge is the Russian gym [laughing], remember who won that fight?” Johnson said, smiling as he stood under an American flag that hangs above the wrestling mats. He is half serious, but not in the way you would think. He does believe there is a villain in this main event, but not a lumbering barely intelligible Drago; but one that Ring of Fire has created.
“They want Chris to be the villain, they need him to be the bad guy. He keeps knocking out their favorites. He beats the promoter’s friends, Williamson, Lopez, and now they want to fix all that by having Thatch beat Chris,” Johnson said.
It is pretty frequent that we hear a coach or a fighter talk about being the underdog, or being the bad-guy in the hopes of pumping themselves and their fan base up, however in this case, it may just be true. At the Ring of Fire event where Holland knocked out Lopez for instance, the crowd was so staunchly anti-Holland that when the first round KO happened, it wasn’t so much that they booed his victory, as they screamed at it. They didn’t hate Holland, they just loved Lopez.
And no one is more loved in the Colorado MMA community than Brandon Thatch.
But that didn’t stop Chris Holland from cracking a wide grin on Sunday as he spoke to us.
“Are you kidding me? I’m the main event at Ring of Fire! This is my UFC. If I think about it too much, I start to not believe anymore,” Holland said standing near a weight bench that he had just a moment earlier been doing reps on. He had arrived at the media day quietly, toting his young daughter and a dog that couldn’t weigh more than ten pounds. It was a comical image. This devastating force of nature in the ring, with fists the size of hams and shoulders that are currently holding the entire collective future of Ground Zero MMA on them, was as relaxed as could be.

Las Vegas (April 5) – The stars of the April 9 “Action Heroes” pay-per-view event arrived in Las Vegas today for a full week of activities leading up to fight night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena which will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View®. When asked about their favorite action heroes and their own super hero qualities, Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Marcos “El Chino’ Maidana, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Michael Katsidis “The Great”, James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland, Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi and Jose Miguel Cotto provided a variety of answers telling how their childhood super heroes have inspired them to become the fighters they are today. Each of these fistic warriors will look to bring these qualities into the ring on Saturday night and prove to the world that they have what it takes to be known as an “Action Hero.”
QUESTION: Who is your favorite action hero?
Erik Morales: “My favorite action hero is Spiderman. I like Spiderman because he uses his brain to get out of tough situations.”
Marcos Maidana: “I like Argentinean national comic book hero Patoruzu. He possessed super human physical strength and was also very generous.”
Robert Guerrero: “Jesus Christ is my super hero because he has faith, patience and determination.”
Michael Katsidis: “Superman because I have super human strengths like he does.”
James Kirkland: “I always liked Spiderman because he was always willing to take on any one who crossed his path regardless of their size.”
Paulie Malignaggi: “My favorite action hero as a kid was the Incredible Hulk. As an athlete, I think I make a similar transformation from my everyday life then move into fight week where the “Hulk” in me comes out. Now, my favorite action hero is definitely myself, ‘Magic Man,’ who was sent here to save the world of boxing and rid it of all its evil forces and unworthy opponents.”
Jose Miguel Cotto: “Growing up, my favorite action hero was Tarzan, King of the Jungle because he is raw and powerful.”
QUESTION: What super powers do you bring to the ring that makes you an action hero?
Erik Morales: “I believe the way I throw punches and my precision when landing them is super human. I also have sharp reflexes that help me avoid counterpunches.”
Marcos Maidana: “I am strong, both physically and mentally and that’s very important for a boxer. In the end, it is about being the best you can be so people think of you as a hero.”
Robert Guerrero: “I look at the verse Philippians 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me,’ and that says it all.”
Michael Katsidis: “I can break down the technique of any fighter and pressure him from the first bell until the final bell.”
James Kirkland: “I’m willing to take on all comers. I have a great desire to win and never accept defeat.”
Paul Malignaggi:”Being that I, Paulie Malignaggi, am ‘Magic Man,’ my special powers include putting my opponents into a trance with my blazing speed of hand and foot as well as many tricks which vary from devious speed combinations to ‘hot-dogging’ that sometimes irritates my opponents and fans. Such tricks are necessary in order to keep my opponent frustrated as well as keeping a new generation of fans on the edge of their seats wondering ‘What will ‘Magic Man’ do next?'”
Jose Miguel Cotto: “I have the determination to win and know I will be victorious on April 9. I feel this is my time.”

LIVE in Los Angeles.
In the must-win co-feature, former Two-Division World Champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, by way of Vanadzok, Armenia, and former IBF Bantamweight World Champion Yonnhy “El Colombiano” Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs), of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., by way of Cartagena, Colombia, will square off in the tournament consolation bout.
Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs), of the Bronx, by way of Accra, Ghana. recaptured the IBF title from Perez in the tournament’s semifinal round, while Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs), of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, won a close split decision over Darchinyan.

JOSEPH KING KONG AGBEKO:
“The winner of this fight is the best bantamweight in the world, of course! Ya know, this tournament was open to everybody – all the greatest fighters at bantamweight. The tough fought. We were brave enough to make the decision to fight in the tournament and that shows that we are the best fighters at bantamweight. So the winner of this tournament becomes the best bantamweight in the world.
“The fight with Vic was the only war that Mares has been through. I’ve been in a couple of wars, as far as boxing is concerned. No disrespect to [Mares] but I think I’m the better fighter. Against him, I’ve got better skills. There’s [no] way that he can go through me. “
“When I come to the fight prepared, no one can survive. When I fought Yonnhy Perez the first time, I wasn’t fully prepared for that fight. Even though that was a very close fight, I didn’t think I was going to lose. But a few head butts happened and it went to the favor of Yonnhy Perez and I lost the fight. In the second fight, I proved to the world that I’m the best bantamweight.
“I feel happy to be in the final of the tournament. The only prediction that I know is that I am going to come out of the ring as the winner of the night. I’ve really prepared for [Mares]. I don’t know if he’ll be able to take the strength and the skills that I bring to the ring. If he can take it, then I’m going to beat him unanimously. If he can’t, it’s going to be a knockout.
“To be honest with you, I have not watched Abner Mares [vs.] Vic Darchinyan because Vic is a different fighter [than me] so I don’t need to watch. Plus, Vic is a southpaw so I can’t really see anything in that fight.
“I’m thinking of moving up to featherweight to take on the big guys. I’m thinking of Gamboa, Lopez and I’m thinking of being in the league with them. After this fight, if I don’t get any good competition then I’m going to move to featherweight. I want to fight them. I want to prove to the world that I’m the best.
“Joseph King Kong Agbeko is not my nickname. It’s an original name. It’s my birth name. I think my dad had a vision of something. My dad gave me the name “King Kong” as I was born. It’s my real name. It’s on my passport and everything.”

Montreal, Canada (April 5)…Undefeated Canadian middleweight David Lemieux (25-0, 24 KOs) is prepared to make a serious statement when he faces Marco Antonio Rubio (49-5-1, 42 KOs) in a WBC middleweight title eliminator this Friday, April 8 from the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Lemieux vs. Rubio fight, which is the final installment of Groupe Yvon Michel‘s highly acclaimed FAST AND THE FURIOUS fight series, will be the main event of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights that evening (11:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
“Rubio is the best opponent I have fought to date,” said Lemieux, whose list of conquests includes Hector Camacho Jr. whom he beat in a first round knockout. “It is going to be interesting to see what Rubio brings to the table. He is a big puncher and has a lot more experience than I do. I am ready to give it my all and I am preparing for war.”
“We are excited to see David in a terrific fight that night from the Bell Centre in Montreal and we are delighted that the US boxing fans will have a chance to see him on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights,” said Yvon Michel, President of Groupe Yvon Michel. “He is a fantastic, very exciting fighter and I think this very competitive fight against Rubio will catapult him to another stage of his career. Lemieux, who has knocked out 24 of his 25 career opponents, is in a position that most fighters dream of – he is one step away from a world title. Rubio, who has an impressive resume and brings his veteran’s experience to the ring, will be a sure test for the undefeated Lemieux. If victorious, Lemieux will be set to face the winner of WBC Middleweight Championship between Sebastian Zbik vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. taking place on June 4.
“I honestly feel that Rubio is tougher than either of the fighters I would face for the title if I win,” Lemieux continued. “I am not looking past Rubio and taking it one step at a time, but I am really looking forward to making a statement with this fight and doing whatever I have to do to get a shot at the middleweight title.”
Long before Lemieux was ranked the #2-ranked middleweight in the world by the WBC, he was a troublemaker running in the wrong circles. A self-proclaimed “Dennis the Menace,” Lemieux was kicked out of school multiple times, as his family moved from house to house, and was often found fighting in the streets. At the age of nine, a neighbor caught Lemieux smoking a cigar and offered to take him to the boxing gym in order to teach him discipline.
“Boxing saved my life,” said Lemieux. “Violence and drugs were all around me when I was growing up. If I hadn’t discovered boxing, I don’t know what I would be doing. I never would have been good at a routine desk job. I fell in love with the boxing gym, and I never wanted to leave.”

Universal, Shaw and DiBella Sign Kenny Galarza

Promoters Javier Bustillo (Universal Promotions), Gary Shaw (Gary Shaw Productions) and Lou DiBella (DiBella Entertainment) are pleased to announce the signing of 140-pound Puerto Rican super prospect Kenny Galarza (14-1, 14 KOs).
Galarza started boxing at five years old and had over 300 fights in his stellar amateur career, winning seven national and several international championships.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity provided by Javier, Gary and Lou. I will work hard not to disappoint them and provide my town of Juana Díaz and my island of Puerto Rico many victories,” said Galarza.
Galarza will make his first appearance under the new promotional banner on the undercard of the Universal Promotions, Gary Shaw Productions and DiBella Entertainment show scheduled for June 10 in New York.
“Kenny is a great fighter and is one of the star signings of the company. He brings a lot of depth to the Universal Promotions stable of boxers,” said Bustillo.
“We have big plans for Kenny. He is a tremendous fighter and I’m sure will bring great glory to Puerto Rico,” said DiBella.
“I’ve seen him fight before and I know Kenny is a great fighter and a great addition to Team Puerto Rico. We want to do great things on this island and Kenny is an essential part of our progress,” added Shaw.

SPROTT TO FLY FLAG FOR BRITAIN IN PRIZEFIGHTER

Reading fighter gunning for back-to-back titles on May 7
Michael Sprott will fly the flag for Britain in the Prizefighter International Heavyweights on May 7 at London’s Alexandra Palace, aiming for back-to-back titles in the series.
The 36 year-old is the current UK Prizefighter Heavyweight Champion after lifting the trophy in October but has found opportunities to kick on in his career limited, with just one four-rounder since that night at York Hall.
Now Sprott is ready to take on the 18th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one-night tournaments in an attempt to get back into major title contention – returning to the venue where his European title dreams were dashed by Audley Harrison’s final round knockout last April.
Sprott and trainer Jim Evans decided that another crack at Prizefighter was the best way for him to get back into the mix, even though the sole Brit in the line-up so far is less than impressed with the Heavyweights in the UK at the moment.
“It’s kind of dry out there at the moment, there’s very little happening in the UK Heavyweight scene,” said Sprott. “It’s a bit frustrating but I do fight a lot over in Germany so I don’t really worry about my place here, I just get on with winning across Europe.
“I was talking to Jim about what will happen next and then the International Prizefighter came around and we decided that I’ve got nothing to lose so why not go for it. There’ll be no surprises for me on the night, it’s a good line up so far but I’ve been here before and claimed the title so I know what is needed.
“I’m definitely ready to fly the flag for Britain, it’s going to be great mixing it with all the other countries, it adds a different twist to the night and I want to come out on top.”
Sprott’s last outing was in Germany on the undercard of Vitali Klitschko’s first round win over Odlanier Solis, with the Englishman claiming a unanimous decision over Turkish southpaw Serdar Uysal.
“I hadn’t boxed since winning Prizefighter so I just had to get rid of a bit of ring rust,” said Sprott. “Some of my timing was a bit off but I did what I had to do to win and he was there just to survive, tucking up, holding on and running around the ring. I had sparred with Vitali for three weeks beforehand and also with Luan Krasniqi so I’ve got some good work under my belt already.
“I was hoping to get a big shot after winning the last Prizefighter I was in, but people avoided me. I know that if I win this Prizefighter with these big names in the line up then surely I won’t be denied.”
Joining Sprott in the International Heavyweights are New Jersey’s Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson who boasts 24 victories and just one defeat, a points loss to Vitali Klitschko in a WBC title challenge in December 2009, unbeaten Irish-based Cuban Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez, who holds ten knockout victories from 13 fights, all inside three rounds, and big-hitting German Konstantin Airich, who holds 13 knockouts from 16 wins and is remembered for a crazy fight with Danny Williams in May 2008. Further names are expected to be added soon as promoters Matchroom Sport promise an explosive night of action with a multi-national flavour.
