NEW YORK (March 3, 2011) – Former body builder and NCAA wrestler Justin Wilcox will face former world title challenger Rodrigo Damm in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink at Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif., on Friday, April 1, live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Wilcox (10-3), of San Jose, Calif., has emerged a contender in the deep lightweight (155 pounds) division, while Damm (9-4), of Brazil, is looking to climb back into title contention.

Life is Good for Michael Grant

“Everything is going really good,” admits heavyweight “Big” Michael Grant.

Coming off a career-resurrecting performance against top heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek, Grant (46-4, 34 KOs) will take on fellow giant Tye “Big Sky” Fields (45-2, 41 KOs) at the Theatre for the Performing Arts in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, on Friday, March 11.

“I’m training at home,” he continues, “for the first time in my career, I didn’t go away to training camp. I love being here with my family and my kids. I’m here training and my wife is here working. Life is good.”

Things are definitely looking up for the 6′ 7″ heavyweight who was widely regarded as all washed up when in 2003, he was stopped by then-promising Dominick Guinn in a listless performance on national television.

Grant left the ring for two full years before embarking on a comeback that, until the fight against Adamek, had garnered little attention.

Wobbling and staying highly competitive with a top heavyweight contender throughout an entertaining 12-rounder tends to re-energize a career.

And so here is Michael Grant, the 2011 version. A victory over Fields would probably propel him back into the top 10 rankings and put him in line for another big-money showdown… right where he has wanted to be for so long.

Early in his career, then-undefeated Grant became the #1 contender and was brutally knocked out by champion Lennox Lewis in two rounds. His career since then has been about getting back to that level in the sport and this time making good on the promise he showed while rising through the ranks.

“It’s a difficult time right now for American heavyweights. The landscape is really harsh. A lot of things are not the way they should be right now. The world is suffering. The economy is suffering. Everything is suffering. But I continue to pursue my ultimate goal of fighting for the heavyweight title again.”

Grant says he learned what he needs to know about Fields when the two sparred for four rounds years ago. “He’s a puncher and not much of a technician. Punchers are always a risk. They can take you out at any time, but we’re going to keep Tye turning. He’s not a technical guy. He’s just looking to land that looping left hand. He’s not really an inside fighter either. There are going to be some good opportunities to exploit on the inside… and good opportunities on the outside as well. I won’t be looking for the KO, but if it comes: good!”

The 38-year-old Grant also reveals that Fields’ massive size will not be an issue… only his stance. “I like fighting guys bigger than me. All the shadow boxing you do, you always jab above your shoulder, so fighting someone even a little bigger than me blends in with my training better. The only difference is that he’s a southpaw. You can’t find too many 6′ 9″ southpaws to spar with unless you go to a basketball team. I have sparring partners and we’ve been working together real good. I have a guy I can punch on and he gives punches back and I have a guy showing me angles from the southpaw stance. He’s making me more comfortable with that.”

“Big” Michael Grant has fought his way back to edge of contendership after faltering on the brink of oblivion for many years. One of the true gentlemen in the sport, he admits he has one sincere wish for the outcome of this fight: “Hopefully we both end up healthy and we both live to fight another day.”

The main event has changed for the Hitz Boxing Fight Night event on Saturday, April 9, at the Venue in the Horseshoe Casino, in Hammond, Indiana.

Undefeated Ghanaian knockout artist Abdulai Amidu (19-0, 17 KOs) will now face Troy, Missouri, power puncher Brandon “The Business” Baue (12-5, 10 KOs) for the WBC Continental Americas Junior Middleweight Title.

Amidu has been attracting high-profile attention as a sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao, often giving it to the pound-for-pound king as good as he gets. The 28 year old will be looking to start another KO streak against Baue, as he was taken the distance by 50+ fight veteran Cristian Favela in his last fight.

Known as an all-action fighter prone to scoring his victories in spectacular fashion, Baue successfully defended his WBF All Americas welterweight championship three times and is the Missouri State Champion.

“Brandon Baue has an exciting style with plenty of power,” explained Hitz Boxing Founder Bobby Hitz. “Knowing these two guys, this fight can’t be anything other than an all-out war.”

The night’s undercard is packed with up-and-coming young contenders, mostly from the Chicago area.

Scheduled to appear are: Hammond’s own Ruben “Modern Day Warrior” Galvan (27-15-4, 10 KOs) in a welterweight match-up; Abdulai Amidu’s brother Yakubu “Black Mamba” Amidu (19-2-1, 16 KOs); Chicago middleweight Mike Kurzeja (4-0, 4 KOs); Chicago super middleweight Ninos Abraham (5-0, 2 KOs); Chicago heavyweight Dave Latoria (7-0, 3 KOs); Chicago junior lightweight Paulie Settepani making his pro debut; and Chicago light welterweight Russell Fiore (4-0-1, 4 KOs) in separate bouts.

El Maachi In Action March 19th – Then Wants Rhodes

International Masters Light Middleweight Champion Yassine El Maachi is set to be back in action again this month, co-headlining the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ Super Show at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.

El Maachi, whose ring moniker is the ‘The Showman’, has proven to be one of the most sensation all action young boxers to hit the scene since the legendary Prince Naseem Hamed exploded on the scene in the 1990s. Coincidentally his laid back, almost arrogant hands down style has often been favourably compared to the Boxing Prince.

Back in December El Maachi put on a masterful display that see him totally outbox WBC Latino Light Middleweight champion Jimmy Colas to retain his International Masters Light Middleweight crown. El Maachi’s performance was exceptionally slick and was rightly described as one of the best performances of the year by any domestic fighter.

Colas was ranked #4 Light Middleweight in Europe when El Maachi beat him, the only fighters ranked higher than Colas at that time were Great Britain’s own Ryan Rhodes, Matthew Hatton and Sam Webb, perhaps this in itself explains why the main players, at both Light Middleweight and Welterweight, avoid fighting this tough Finsbury Park based Moroccan.

Prime example of the domestic fighters unwillingness to fight El Maachi was when his promoter, Steve Goodwin, offered then British Champion Anthony Small £50,000 if he beat El Maachi. Small turned the offer down, Goodwin then increased the offer to whopping £75,000, yet Small still didn’t want to know.

With no British opponents of the level being willing to step in the ring with El Maachi Steve Goodwin has paid big money to bring top class fighters over from Europe for him, as he will be doing yet again on March 19th.

Earlier today El Maachi made his feelings clear on this matter when he said, “I would love to have Ryan Rhodes to fight because he is the one everyone says is the best in England, you know. But I know this fight is never going to happen because he knows that I will beat him. Ryan Rhodes is running away from a lot of fighters.”

El Maachi then went on to talk briefly about the upcoming fight, “You’re going to see a different style, which we’re working on right now. They’re gonna see a proper knockout. Whoever going to fight me is going to get knocked out.

Steve (Goodwin) is looking for a good opponent for me. He’s talking with a top ten ranked American, but not sure if that is for this fight.

Whoever I fight it’s going to be a war. ”

The twenty-five year old native of Brooklyn is coming off a second round stoppage over Johnny Rodriguez this past December 19th in his birth country of the Dominican Republic.

Gomez of Philadelphia likewise has a perfect record of 4-0.

Gomez has fought mainly in the southwest such as Oklahoma and Texas.

The twenty-six year old has a victory over twenty-eight fight veteran Arturo Herrera. In his last bout, Gomez scored a four round unanimous decision over Omar Gonzalez on December 17th in San Antonio, Texas.

In the six round co-feature, Mike Ruiz (10-4, 5 KO’s) of Long Island, NY will battle Jorge Barajas (5-4, 2 KO’s) of Boise, Idaho.
