Holyfield Returns to Ring for ‘Redemption in America’

Headlining Jan. 22 PPV show vs. Sherman Williams in West Virginia

CHARLOTTE, NC (December 20, 2010) – Living legend Evander “The Read Deal” Holyfield returns to the ring January 22, headlining “Redemption In America: The Journey Begins Now” Pay-Per-View Event, live from America’s resort, The Greenbrier’s Colonial Hall, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Holyfield (43-10-2, 218 KOs) will defend his World Boxing Federation heavyweight title against battled-tested veteran Sherman “The Tank” Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs) in the 12-round main event.

“Redemption In American,” presented by ARK Promotions in association with The Greenbrier, will be distributed in North American by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay per view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, Avail-TVN and DISH Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice and Shaw PPV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

“Redemption” will fuse world class boxing and entertainment; showcasing a production that includes high-energy music presented by Broadway performers, along with dancers and aerial artists. Competitive supporting fights, soon to be announced, will set the stage for the main event featuring Holyfield on his journey to become the first heavyweight champion to regain the coveted world title four different times.

“Our show will be a one-of-a-kind event – real pain, real boxing, real entertainment,” ARK Promotions president Rick Lazes said. “Redemption is about America and Evander Holyfield on the road back to the top. America’s down but not out: Americans are winners, not quitters. Just like when we put a man on the moon; when we are challenged, we are at our best, so don’t ever count us out. Just like America, Evander will show the world that he still has what it takes to rise to the challenge.

“This show is a feel-good story about America and Evander Holyfield. It opens with a performance of Ray Charles’ ‘America,’ by Tony award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays the lead in the upcoming Broadway play, ‘Unchain My Heart,’ chronicling the life of Ray Charles. The audience will see a collage of America’s beauty and strength, including the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Statue of Liberty, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Marilyn Monroe, etc. All this will accompany Brandon’s amazing live performance of ‘America.’ I guarantee that it will give everyone goose bumps. The evening continues with non-stop boxing action, complimented by high-energy musical entertainment. It’s going to be a night to remember. No one has ever seen boxing presented like this before. If I were David Haye, I’d be counting my days as world champion.”

Holyfield has fought and beaten a virtual Who’s Who of the heavyweight and cruiserweight divisions during his Hall of Fame-bound, 26-year pro career, including world champions such as Mike Tyson (twice), George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, James “Buster” Douglas, John Ruiz (twice), Hasim Rahman, Chris Byrd, Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, Dwight Muhammad Qawi (twice), and Carlos De Leon. Holyfield’s last fight was a win by eighth-round technical knockout against Frans Botha (47-4-3) last April for the vacant World Boxing Federation crown.

Williams, a native of Freeport, Bahamas, has defeated former world champion Al “Ice” Cole, fought multiple world title challenger Jameel McCline to a draw, and extended former world heavyweight titlist Ruslan Chagaev the full distance in their 2005 fight. Williams is a rugged heavyweight who has never been knocked down so expect an action packed fight to the finish.

Xmas Fitness Lifeline – London Gym Stays Open Throughout Christmas-New Year Break

Normally the Christmas and New Year holiday presents boxers and fitness fans a major dilemma as it is almost impossible to keep training, other than running or doing a home workout, with all the gyms closed for the break. However things will be very different this year as health conscious Londoners have been thrown a welcome lifeline.

Due to various of their professional boxers being due to fight on January 22nd, at the Graham Earl promoted ‘Capital Punishment’ event at York Hall, Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town will remain open, albeit it with limited hours, over the entire holiday period.

Whilst primarily Ultrachem TKO is a professional boxing gym there are more than enough general fitness equipment, machines and weights on hand to satisfy even the most fanatical of fitness devotee.

In addition there will be various members of the Ultrachem TKO training team on hand for advise and assist those who require additional help. Two of the team, Barry Smith and Marianne Marston, will also be available to undertake prearranged personal One-2-One boxing or fitness sessions.

Canning Town and West Ham stations are just a few minutes walk away and Ultrachem TKO Gym has a private car park for those that prefer to drive.

Gym owner, Johnny Eames, has deemed that NO GYM MEMBERSHIP will be required for casual users over the Christmas and New Year period just a daily fee of £5.00

HOPKINS DENIED HISTORY: Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins Battle to Majority Draw

QUEBEC CITY (Dec. 19, 2010) — Sixteen years after swearing off fights outside of America because of a draw against Segundo Mercado in Quito, Ecuador, history repeated itself for Bernard Hopkins. Though dropped twice early in the bout – as he was against Mercado – by World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, the 45-year-old Hopkins battled back in the teacher vs. student fight with an energetic veteran performance. In the end, Hopkins was one scorecard short of making history as the oldest boxer to win a major title as the fight was ruled a majority draw.

The 28-year-old Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs) came out with the fervor of a champion, landing hard shots to the head of Hopkins. Counterpunching more than normal, the young titleholder finished the first round with a barrage of punches ending with a right hand that landed Hopkins (51-5-2) in an unfamiliar place: the canvas.

Pascal continued to bull rush Hopkins, of Philadelphia, into the second and third rounds with running rights and leaping lefts. The Haitian-born Canadian knocked down the future Hall of Famer with a left hook in the third round and it began to look as if Hopkins might be showing signs of his age as the sold out crowd went wild at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada.

Hopkins, unhurt by the punches that knocked him down, proved his veteran confidence by maintaining his composure. The former two-division world champion kept up his work rate as Pascal’s began to slow. Listening to his trainer Naazim Richardson‘s words from the corner, the cagy Hopkins “invested” in body work to pay dividends later in the fight.

“I got up and fought like a champion,” said Hopkins after the fight. “Look at his face. Look at mine.”

Pascal, often questioned about his stamina, stopped his bull rushes and threw far fewer punches as the championship clash entered the middle rounds. The crowd started to quiet as the fans in attendance began to wonder if their countryman’s point lead would be able to hold as Hopkins slowly but surely gained control of the fight by outpunching and outlanding Pascal. Feeling the tide turning, Hopkins walked around the ring with swagger and taunted Pascal after the champ’s punches left him unfazed as the fight wore on.

To begin round 12, Hopkins came out firing to let the crowd, judges and Pascal know that he planned to take the belt from a man 18 years his junior. The two warriors threw punches – some effective, some wild – to bring the packed house to its feet. When the final bell rang, a revitalized Hopkins raised his arms in victory.

Jimmy Lennon Jr. revealed the first judge Steve Morrow’s score, 114-112 for Hopkins, to a cacophony of boos. The next two cards were scored as draws, 113-113 from Claude Paquette and 114-114 from Dan Van De Wielle. The majority draw left many things uncertain except for the fact that everyone in attendance and at home watching on SHOWTIME witnessed a terrific championship fight.

Clearly annoyed by the outcome, Hopkins said, “[I’ve] got no reaction. The world [has] seen it. I had the guy beat up.” He continued, “You don’t see Pascal jumping around happy. I am not going anywhere. You saw a young man in an old man’s body. I still have the fight in me.”

Proudly donning his Light Heavyweight belt, Pascal stated after the fight, “Of course I thought I won. I stood there. I dropped him twice. We’ve got fair judges in Canada.” Though he did admit, “That wasn’t my best fight.”

When asked about going another 12 rounds with The Executioner, Pascal responded, “If he wants a rematch, any time.” Hopkins later added, “The closest I will ever come to Canada again is Niagara Falls.”

Though fight fans will have to wait to find out about a rematch, they can relive all of tonight’s drama when the telecast is reaired this Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO2 and be available ON DEMAND from Dec. 21 through Jan. 3, 2011.

The event was promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel and Golden Boy Promotions.

Douglin Demolishes Berkshire!

Morganville, NJ (December 18, 2010) – Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin once again displayed why he is a prospect to look out for after stopping Matt Berkshire in the first of their scheduled six round bout yesterday evening at the Doubletree Hotel in Monroeville, PA.

Douglin was in control from the opening bell, dropping Berkshire with a right hand to the body and then moments later with a monstrous uppercut, forcing the referee to halt the contest at 1:53.

“I am very satisfied with my performance,” said Douglin, who improved to 12-0 with 8 KO’s. “Going into the fight I didn’t know much about my opponent so the fact that I was able to get him out of there in the opening round is definitely a plus.”

Douglin, a Morganville, NJ native, stopped five of his six opponents in 2010. Berkshire, of West Virginia, falls to 11-3-2 with 5 kayos.
