STILLWATER, Okla. – Longtime international wrestling official Dr. Vincent Zuaro will be inducted into the Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées (FILA) International Hall of Fame during the Wrestling World Championships on Sept. 4 in Moscow, Russia.

Zuaro will become the first official from the United States to be recognized by the FILA Hall of Fame for his career as a referee.

“This induction means a great deal to me as I have given much of my life to the sport,” Zuaro said from his home in New York City. “I never expected a reward like this, it’s been a labor of love.”

Zuaro officiated in five Olympic Games, 34 World Championships, six Pan American Championships and 30 years of national tournaments in addition to a long career as a collegiate referee. Three times he was presented the FILA Cross/Star, the highest award of international wrestling, as well as the Gold Whistle, for his Olympic and World officiating. In 1970, he founded the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association, responsible for educating American referees, and authored the USA Wrestling rule book for 20 years.

Zuaro joins two Greco-Roman wrestlers, two men’s freestyle wrestlers, one women’s freestyle wrestler and a legendary Russian coach in the FILA Hall of Fame Class of 2010. The awards are housed in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater.

In Greco-Roman, the list includes Georgia’s Roman Rurua and Poland’s Andrzej Wronski. The freestyle inductees are Russia’s Anatoli Beloglasov, Bouvaisa Saitiev, and women’s freestyler Nikola Hartmann-Duenser of Austria. Legendary coach and wrestler Ivan Yarygin will be the 2010 recipient of the FILA Legend award.

“This 2010 FILA Hall of Fame class offers us a glimpse at the steep tradition of Russian wrestling. It features Russia’s three-time Olympic Champion, Bouvaisa Saitiev and the only wrestler in history to win a gold medal at three different weight classes, Anatoli Beloglasav,” said Stan Dziedzic, President of the FILA Hall of Fame Commission. “Legend Ivan Yarygin rounds out Russia’s honorees and FILA looks forward to honoring all of the inductees after its Congress Meeting in Moscow.”

Rurua and Wronski combined to win eight World-level medals with Rurua winning one Olympic gold and Wronski winning two in Greco-Roman.

Beloglasov earned three gold medals at the World Championships and an Olympic Gold in 1980. Saitiev’s impressive career includes six World gold medals and three Olympic gold medals.

Hartmann-Duenser carries with her five World gold medals, three of which were won consecutively in 1993, ’94, and ’95. Yarygin, holds two Olympic gold medals, one World gold medal and is a former USSR National Coach.

(17Aug2010) You ever get those calls on your phone where you don’t recognize the number calling you so you let the phone ring until it goes to voice mail?

Usually this will suffice the caller’s needs and they will proceed with leaving a voice message in your mail center and wait for your return contact. However, every now and again, the caller will be persistent and leaving a message will only go so far in their eyes. They need more.

Well three calls and one voice message (marked urgent on my cell phone) later, it was apparent that someone was itching to “reach out and touch someone”; me. The person with the itch was none other than Roger Mayweather.

Needless to say, I returned his calls.

“This fight has to happen; we want this fight,” exclaimed Roger Mayweather.

“The fight for my nephew is Manny. This is the fight that makes the most sense when talking about money making, but also, this fight has to happen cause it’s important to the fans. The people want to see this fight and they should get what they want.”

“I’m hearing people say my nephew’s (multi-world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.) scared of Manny Pacquiao. Floyd ain’t scared of Manny. Lil’ Floyd ain’t scared of sh*t, why should he be?” Mayweather continued, “Let me ask this question, who’s been knocked out twice?”

Roger is clearly talking about the two pound-for-pound combatants that were expected to do battle in the “biggest fight in boxing history” sometime this year-undefeated slick boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the crowd pleasing, heavy handed Manny Pacquiao. However, the dream fight that was, failed to materialize and since has become a nightmare for all involved.

From the network suits to the promoters all the way down to the sweet science fans themselves and everyone in between, the sentiment is mutual, we’ve all been robbed of witnessing greatness in the squared circle.

Many people are blaming Floyd Mayweather Jr. for this fight not taking place. Originally, the fight was proposed with stipulations from the Mayweather camp that Pacquiao submit to random blood tests prior to the fight.

Pacquiao scoffed at this request believing that taking blood from his body would hinder his ability to be at full strength for the fight.

Because of this, the fight was nixed until talks allegedly resumed again over the summer.

This time, Pacquiao stated he would be willing to partake in blood tests, but only if the tests were scheduled to cease fourteen days prior to the scheduled bout with Mayweather.

With that, Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum from Top Rank boxing, initialized a very public deadline for Mayweather to agree to these terms or forfeit the chance to dethrone the “People’s Champion”.

The deadline came and went and no one has heard much from the Mayweather camp about this matter until now.

“The only reason this fight hasn’t happened is because Manny won’t agree to random blood tests throughout training camp,” Roger said.

“This motherf**ker says he agreed to tests, but he really didn’t,” Mayweather continues, “he wants to know when these tests are happening and he wants them to end at a certain time.”

“How the f*ck is that random drug testing?”

He asks, “If you got nothing to hide, then why be so concerned about when you gotta take a drug test?”

“How you gonna leave over 100 million dollars on the table cause you don’t want to take random drug tests leading up to the fight?”

“I know why. ‘Cause you got something to hide,” said Roger.

I’m not sure if Manny is hiding something, but I am curious as to why Floyd is adamant about cleaning up the sport of boxing via random blood tests. Why now? Why go 40 bouts into your career and suddenly demand your opponents submit to Olympic style testing?

Mayweather answered, “My nephew brought this testing up because going into the fight with Shane Mosley, Shane had a history of using substances. And now with Manny, we got our suspicions.”

“Floyd ain’t asking no one to do nothing that he isn’t willing to do himself.”

“You saw what happened when we got Shane in that ring; Floyd put an ass whooping on him and guess what, we got the same for Manny too,” said Mayweather.

Roger continued, “We got something for this mother f**ker. He ain’t doing nothing but living on borrowed time and he knows it.”

“Manny can’t fight. He ain’t shit.”

Mayweather then turned his ire to me, “I heard you thought it would take my nephew eight rounds to finish Pacquiao. You’re crazy.”

“You must be being kind, but blind,” he added, “Floyd won’t take eight rounds to finish Manny. How can you say it’ll take eight rounds when this f*cking bum (Manny) swings wild, has no head movement or defense and ain’t got no f*cking skills in the ring?”

Mayweather offers yet another question to his captive audience, “Who the f*ck has two close fights with (Juan Manuel) Marquez?”

“Manny does. He’s a f*cking bum living on borrowed time and we got something for his ass.”

“The year ain’t over yet and there’s still plenty of time to fight.”

“I’m sure you’ll see Floyd fight before the year’s out,” proclaimed Mayweather.

Aside from revealing his belief that Floyd will fight in the near future, he finished with a message to Manny Pacquiao.

“Come on mother f**cker, meet us.”

Ruiz trying not to look past Serao

Lemoore, Calif. – Anthony Ruiz is trying not to look past his opponent for the Tachi Palace Fights Middleweight title on Thursday, September 9 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.

“I’ve learned a lot about him since he fought my teammate Phil Collins. Actually, I kind of thought he (Leopoldo Serao) would have done a lot better against Phil. I was watching him fight and thinking, ‘I know that I can beat this guy’,” said Ruiz, who carries a 25-13 record into the bout.

“I mean, I kind of always do that during fights. But I really thought he would do a lot better.”

Serao is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, earning a shot at the title in October with a decision victory over Collins (9-5) and the Oakland, Calif. based fighter has won two straight.

“I think it’s going to be a way. It’s a good fight for me, but Anthony Ruiz is very dangerous,” Serao (16-7) said. “I think the fight will be very difficult for both of us.

The fight will end when I knock him out or submit him.”

The later probably would be more than likely to occur, as Serao has 13 submissions in his 16 victories.

“Leopoldo is going to come forward. We know that I also like to come forward, but I’m going to be patient this fight. I’m not going to get caught in a stupid takedown,” said Ruiz of Coarsegold, Calif.

Huck-Godfrey Workouts in Germany

WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck (29-1, 22 KOs) and challenger Matt Godfrey (20-1, 10 KOs) today participated in an open media work-out in front of more than 500 fans in Erfurt, Germany.

Captain Huck is determined to defend his title for a fourth time on Saturday night. “My fans love my aggressiveness and explosiveness and I will make sure Matt Godfrey will get a good taste of it,” Huck said. “I am just too explosive for him. The belt stays in Germany. I want to put on another spectacular performance and defeat Godfrey in style.”

Even though Godfrey has left Ulli Wegner guessing in what stance he will fight, the German star coach said it does not matter. “I have prepared Marco for both a southpaw as well as an orthodox stance,” he stated. “Even if Godfrey intends to switch, it will not be a problem. Marco has worked hard in practice. If he listens to his corner, he will defend his title with another great victory.”

Meanwhile, Godfrey believes it will be him who leaves the ring victorious. “I might not have the hardest punch, but I am smarter than Huck,” he said during today´s session. “He’s a big strong guy and a very good puncher. He’s a little limited in some of the things he can do, but he’s very consistent in a lot of the things he does do. He’s a champion for a reason. He didn’t get 29 wins and 22 knockouts by accident. We have a big task on our hands, but we had a great camp to prepare for it. It will be a great fight. ”

Maurice Harris a player again

NEW YORK (Aug. 17, 2010) – The roller-coaster career of Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris, winner of the 2002 ‘Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament,” is riding high once again, coming off of his solid August 6 victory against IBF #15 prospect Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera for the vacant USBA heavyweight title.

Harris (24-14-2, 10 KOs), who has beaten some of the best and also lost to journeymen, out-boxed and out-worked the much younger Aguilera (16-3, 11 KOs) to earn a unanimous decision (117-111 twice, 115-113), as well as the USBA belt.

“It feels good being a champion again,” Harris said. “I’m one step closer to my dream of fighting for the world title. I’d be honored to fight one of the Klitschko brothers. They’re both strong and big. I like them a lot, personally, having worked with them in 2005 in Venice Beach (CA). That’s when I got my first tattoo. Vitaly and Wladimir are great people, but I’m on a mission right now, so we’d have to put friendships aside. It’s just business.”

“Nagy had a big first round knockout of (former world champion Oleg) Maskaev last year,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy noted. “He got knocked out by (Samuel) Peter, but he was still coming off of two impressive wins, and was rated No. 15 by the IBF. He’s a good young fighter but Maurice is the most experienced American heavyweight. He has a very good jab, experience. and now he’s confident with Boxing 360 supporting him. All of that could lead to a world heavyweight title fight. Who knows what the heavyweight division will look like next year?

“A lot of fighters near the top wait for their title shot and don’t fight too often. In 2001, Harris lost his only title shot to former world champion Chris Byrd, ironically, by 12-round decision for the USBA belt. “Winning ‘Thunder Box’ was cool but this is better because I have a belt,” Maurice commented. “I lost what I set out to do to against Chris Byrd – win a title belt — but it just wasn’t my time. Now that I’m here, though, I don’t plan on leaving very soon. I’m fighting for my family and I’m getting closer and closer to my ultimate dream.

“I’m very spiritual and Big Daddy (God) up there made this possible. I’ve proven that anything can happen if you believe in yourself, work hard, and surround yourself with good people. I learned from Mario (Boxing 360 owner Dr. Mario Yagobi) to never take no for an answer. He lifts me, instills confidence in me, in and out of the ring. We respect each other. Now, I just do my job. Mario takes care of boxing things outside the ring. He has taught me a lot.”

Duffy, a veteran boxing promoter and former NYAC boxing commissioner, appreciates the difference in the new Maurice Harris. “With all Maurice has been through during his career,” Duffy remarked, “instead of chasing opponents for him to fight, now, we’re getting calls about guys to fight him. SAN JOSE, CALIF. (Aug. 17, 2010) – Leading Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) website Sherdog (www.Sherdog.com) will stream two LIVE fights from the undercard of the world championship doubleheader at STRIKEFORCE: Houston this Saturday, Aug. 21, at Toyota Center in Houston, Tex. The live stream will begin at approximately 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Undefeated heavyweight and two-time United States Olympic Games wrestling team member Daniel Cormier (4-0) will attempt to make it five wins in a row when he faces hard-hitting Jason Riley (9-3) during the free undercard stream. Also streaming LIVE on Sherdog will be a welterweight bout between Brazilian Andre Galvao (4-1) and Houston’s Jorge Patino (20-12-1).

A former NCAA Division I national championship runner up at Oklahoma State University, Cormier has won three of his four fights via knockout. Cormier won his initial MMA and STRIKEFORCE start with a second-round TKO (punches) over Gary Frazier on Sept. 25 in Tulsa, Okla. He dominated John Devine in his second fight with a first-round knockout at a STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event on March 26 in Fresno, Calif., and followed that up with a first-round TKO of Lucas Browne on July 31. He is fresh off a 2:27, first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Tony Johnson, Jr., on Aug. 13.

A heavyweight prospect who trains at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose., Cormier placed fourth in the 2004 Olympics in freestyle wrestling. He was named captain of the U.S. squad for the 2008 Olympics, but was unable to compete due to injury.

Riley, of Columbus, Ohio, has won seven of his fights via knockout and is coming off two knockout victories in the last two months. Far more experienced professionally than Cormier, Devine has been in the cage with MMA veteran Tim Silvia, who fought MMA legends Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Randy Couture and Andrei Arlovski.

Galvao, of Brasilia, Brazil, is coming off a split-decision victory over Luke Stewart at a STRIKEFORCE Challengers fight on March 26 in Fresno, Calif. Galvao, a submission specialist, will be tested by the experienced Patino, who has triumphed seven times by submission, more than Galvao’s fours wins and one loss combined. The Brazilian-born Patino has fought professionally since 1995 but will be in the cage for the first time in almost a year. Patino, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has been in a handful of epic battles, holds a notable 2003 win over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who will fight for the vacant STRIKEFORCE Middleweight title in Houston.

The co-main event will pit Souza against American military hero Tim Kennedy in a battle for the vacant STRIKEFORCE Middleweight (185 pounds) title.

‘Saint’ George Jupp Ready For Battle With Pavels Senkovs on Sept 11th

Ultrachem TKO’s exceptional teenage discovery, George Jupp, is set for the second start of his fledgling professional career, against the highly experienced Latvian Pavels Senkovs, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘It’s Personal’ title double header at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 11th September 2010.

Back in May this year, at the ‘Oakey’s Last Stand’ event at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth,19 year old Jupp showed his mettle against a very tough opponent in Peter Barney, with a superb boxing display to secure victory by a 40-37 points margin.

Following a training session under the watchful eyes of co-trainer Derek Grainger, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, Belvedere’s ‘Saint’ George spoke of his preparations for his upcoming fight, “So far so good, been training for the past three weeks and all’s looking good. Just started the sparring last week, got some good sparring in with Daryl Setterfield and will be sparring Ian Bailey this week. Everything is coming together, the roadwork and gym work.

I don’t know anything about Pavels, other than he’s a tough coming forward pressure fighter. I think he’s had a few fights. It’ll be good experience and a good test, I’m looking forward to it.

My debut fight was a tough, tough fight, He was a really strong boy, he just kept coming. I caught him with some nice shots. I just stuck to my boxing and think I did the much cleaner work, it was hard as he was a tough test for my debut, but I came through.

After coming through that tough fight, and the excellent preparations I’m getting here with Johnny (Manager/co-trainer Johnny Eames) and Del (co-trainer Derek Grainger) at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym, I’m feeling quite confident for this fight.

I’ve been doing my work with Del mainly, and with Johnny sometimes during the day. We’ve been going over the basics again and trying new things. We watched the video of my first fight and are working on some things we could improve and sharpen, using his fight wisdom. I’m learning some of his tricks and that. He’s been there and done it, lucky for me I get to benefit from his experience.

It’s going to be a great night, we have six Ultrachem TKO fighters on the show so there’ll be lots of support and a great atmosphere. I can’t wait.”

A smiling Johnny Eames, who had been listening intently as George spoke, then added, “With regard to George’s first fight we did something that we don’t normally do by putting him in with a debutante. So we knew very little about the kid. We gave away a couple of kilo as well.

We decided to take a bit of a gamble because of George’s boxing skills and dedication. We rolled the dice with George and he stood up to it superbly. It was a perfect fight for him in the sense that we could see what George’s made of and the kid came to fight, he came to win. It was in Portsmouth and the kids from Portsmouth and he had everything in his favour except George’s superior ability. George handled the pressure really well, showed he has an old head on very, very young shoulders and I really do believe George can go all the way.”

‘Saint’ George Jupp versus Pavels Senkovs is on the undercard of the Goodwin Promotions ‘It’s Personal’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 11th September 2010.

Co-headlining ‘It’s Personal’ are Former English Super Bantamweight Champion Ryan Barratt versus Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander, for the vacant International Masters Lightweight title and ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese versus Lee Noble, for the British Masters Light Middleweight Title.

‘It’s Personal’ also features the exciting, Brian Lawrence trained/managed, Light Middleweight star Erick ‘The Eagle Ochieng, who recently defeated Curtis Valentine in the battle of the undefeated, is looking to extend his unblemished record against Brummy hardman Dee Mitchell.

Another Light Middleweight prospect, Michael Norgrove, also looks to extend his perfect record. Norgrove, whose record ot 2-0, has his hardest test to date when he faces Finchley’s Ian Eldridge.

Welterweight John Wayne Hibbert, who also has a perfect unbeaten record, is set to face his sternest test to date when he faces the experienced brawler Kevin McAuley from Halesowen.

Unbeaten prospect Tony “The Conqueror” Conquest is set to face one of the most experienced Cruserweight’s around, Hastings Rasani, who has fought the best the division has offered over the years, David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye, Troy Ross, Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott, Terry Dunston, Mark Krence, Tony Bellew, Dean Francis… and the list just goes on. This is no easy fight for Conquest, who will need to be right on his game.

Another Ultrachem TKO Gym discovery, Portsmouth’s Light Heavyweight Joel McIntyre, the protégé of WBU Light Heavyweight World Champion Tony ‘Oakey Kokey’ Oakey, will be making his highly anticipated professional debut. Joel will be facing Welsh banger Jamie Ambler.

Super Middleweight Eder Kurti will be looking to maintain his six fight winning streak against Sabie Monteith.

Bethnal Green’s highly popular Light Welterweight Jamie Arlain is set to explode on the professional scene. Arlain will be facing Bulgarian Danny Dontchev.

Exciting Welterweight prospect Phil Gill aka “The Phil Gill Experience” looks to continue his unbeaten record against the experienced Sid Razak.

Also at Welterweight Bobby Gladman, who has a perfect 6-0 record is set for a four round contest against a yet to be named opponent.
