WBU Champ Willie Limond’s ‘Team Scotland’ Set For Charity Football Tournament On 25th July

WBU Lightweight World Champion Willie Limond is taking a little time out of camp, where he is preparing for his September 11th showdown with seven time World Champion Erik Morales, to take part in the Ultrachem TKO Gym’s Charity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, at the Brockwell Stadium, Canvey Island on Sunday the 25th July.

Glasgow’s Limond, who beat English Champion Ryan Barrett to win the WBU Lightweight title in May ‘09, is no stranger to the football pitch, his team having won the previous Ultrachem TKO Gym celebrity football tournament in 2008.

On naming his squad, which includes his brothers Kevin and Rayman, various Scottish boxers including former British Super Featherweight champion Craige Docherty as well as a couple of former Scottish Premiership footballers – Kevin Melkle and Alan Reid, Limond briefly said “I’t’s an honour to take time out, from preparations for the biggest fight of my career, to come down and play in support of such a worthy cause as the Indee Rose Trust. It means so much to us to be involved and we’re looking forward to beating the English on their own ground again.“

Ultrachem TKO Gym’s Johnny Eames added, “On a personal note I would like to thank Willie and the Scottish team who generously offered to pay their own flights down and safe the charity a few quid. Fantastic gesture lads, shows the spirit of true boxing people.”

Willie Limond is just one of a host of boxing, TV, film and music stars taking part in the tournament, to raise funds for the Indee Rose Trust, which provide support to children recovering from brain and spinal tumors.

Amongst those already committed to the event are WBA Heavyweight World Champion David Haye, former undisputed Light Welterweight King Ricky Hatton, European Champion Darren Barker, British & Commonwealth Super Featherweight Champ Kevin Mitchell, British Super Middleweight Champion Paul Smith, Commonwealth Champions Ricky Burns & Tony Bellew, former Irish Heavyweight Champion, and Mike Tyson’s sparring partner ‘Big’ Joe Egan, Olympic Gold Medallist James DeGale, World Amateur Champion Frankie Gavin and Olympian Billy Joe Saunders.

From the world of television and film, actors Gerald Kerns & Ciaren Griffiths, both of whom are currently starring in the hit TV series Shameless, Mark Wingett (Jim Carver from the Bill) and former English Super Featherweight Challenger and Coronation Street star Stephen Bell, who will be guesting on the National Journalists team.

Representing the Music biz are Rock superstars Iron Maiden, who are co-favourites, with Team Scotland, to win having former England star Teddy Sherringham in their squad, and Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell, who will be guesting on the Ultrachem TKO Gym team.

Gunn Targets Nakash!

Hackensack, NJ (July 15) – It was just over a year ago that Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn put forth a gutsy effort against IBF/Ring Magazine Cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek. Gunn’s performance was commended by fight fans and various media outlets, who penned about his tremendous heart. The Hackensack, NJ native expected his showing against Adamek to help him land another notable bout, but this hasn’t been the case.

Since giving his all against the hard hitting Pole, Gunn had a number of bouts fall out and is yet to return to the squared circle. With one year down the tubes, the 36 year old Gunn acknowledges he’s in the final chapter of his career and is only interested in facing world rated fighters.

“From world title fights to unsanctioned referees and early stoppages, I have seen it all,” exclaimed Gunn, a former IBA Cruiserweight champion. “I am a seasoned pro and have earned my stripes, so at this point it only benefits me to face noteworthy opponents.”

Flash back to July 11 2009, when heavily hyped Ran Nakash dismantled William Bailey on the Adamek-Gunn undercard. Ringsiders were buzzing about Nakash’s performance and were in agreement that he was ready for a step up. From that day forward, the unbeaten Nakash was linked to a match up against Gunn. Unfortunately, the bout is yet to happen despite Gunn’s willingness to battle him anytime, anywhere and any place.

Last night, following Nakash’s victory over Victor Barragan in which he attended, Gunn spoke with the media about his eagerness to fight the world rated Israeli. Those at ringside were once again discussing the potential match up, but Gunn was far more concerned with landing a fight than making a splash.

“This guy is a perfect opponent for me and I have wanted to face him for quite some time” said Gunn, a former Canadian National Amateur Champion. “He’s a very strong fighter, but he comes straight forward and gets hit with a ton of jabs. I know I can outbox this guy without a doubt.”

Gunn also hopes that Nakash’s post fight statements hold true.

“He told a number of media members after his victory that I’m the kind of guy he is looking to fight, but actions speak louder than words. I am ready to fight, but is he? Documentation beats conversation seven days a week Ran, sign the contract and let’s do this!”

LET’S GET IT ON PROMOTIONS INKS LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER OTIS “TRIPLE OG” GRIFFIN

JULY 15th, 2010, RENO – Let’s Get It On Promotions and current USBA light-heavyweight champion, Otis “Triple OG” Griffin, have entered into a long term promotional agreement. Griffin, with a record of 22-6, 9 KOs is also ranked #10 in the world in the IBF.

Griffin, who was the winner of Fox’s The Next Great Champ boxing reality TV show in 2004, has been on an impressive winning streak. In April of 2009, he traveled to Florida to fight former super-middleweight world champion, Jeff Lacy, and lost a majority decision in Lacy’s native Tampa, FL. Most boxing fans and writers believe that Griffin won seven out of the ten rounds, and was on the wrong end of a hometown decision. Since then, Griffin has been on a rush, coming off of three impressive wins. In November, Griffin made his way to New England to fight the popular Joey McCreedy. Although Otis was the underdog going into his opponent’s hometown, he executed a perfect game plan and came out with a unanimous decision victory. In May, Otis traveled to New York to challenge the dangerous Byron Mitchell for the vacant light-heavyweight USBA title. Again the underdog, Griffin pulled off the win with his excellent boxing.

Griffin is slated to headline on August 28th in Fallon, NV on the third annual “Rural Rumble” show. Being from Sacramento, CA, his regional fans will have a chance to see him fight on the West Coast.

“Otis is in a great spot right now.” Says Terry Lane of Let’s Get It On Promotions. “He is looking at a world title shot soon. He is a perfect fit for Let’s Get It On Promotions.”

(July 15, 2010)…The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation will receive $20,000 in funding from the Chase Community Giving Program-an initiative where the top 200 charities will benefit from $5 million in contributions distributed by Chase. This program gave Facebook users a chance to vote for their favorite charities or foundations among thousands that participated in this contest.

Serious about continuing his efforts to give back to the Las Vegas community, Mayweather reached out to his Twitter and Facebook followers, who helped vote the Champ’s charity into the top 200. Tua prepared to take care of business and Barrett

Tua-Barrett headlines Saturday night’s PPV show in Atlantic City

NEW YORK (July 15, 2010) – Power-punching David “Tuamanator” Tua isn’t looking past his opponent Saturday night, former world title challenger Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett, despite being mentioned as a future opponent for world champions David Haye and the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali.

Tua trained in Jersey City, New Jersey to prepare for Saturday night’s 12-round main event fight on the “T-N-T at the Tropicana” pay-per-view event, presented by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, at Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Tua (51-3-1, 43 KOs), rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization, hasn’t fought in Atlantic City for eight years, however, he’s undefeated fighting there in 13 fights with 12 knockouts.

“I have to do what needs to be done right up through Saturday night’s fight,” Tua said. “Everything has been fantastic in camp. I have to stay on top of what’s important, focusing 100-percent on my fight against Barrett. Israel Garcia (sparring partner) has given me good, honest work in the gym. I’m not done, yet. I have to maintain – mind, body and emotions. I can’t let my emotions run away from me and start thinking about other things.”

Other things could be his second world title fight, after losing his only opportunity 10 years ago to undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis by 12-round decision. “It’s exciting times for me but I can’t get fixed on a world title fight with this important fight in front of me,” Tua explained. “I know I have to keep winning or there won’t be another world title fight for me and that’s motivating enough to keep me going.

“In any sport, including boxing, the goal is to compete for the world title. My one chance didn’t go my way, but I still consider that the highlight of my career to date. I have a goal and that’s to fight for the world title again. I’m not going to be fighting forever; I figure I have 2-3 good years left. I would be satisfied to reach my goal and say I did it. After that, I can finish on my own terms. That would be sweet.”

Tua has defeated four world champions– John Ruiz (KO1), Michael Moorer (KO1) and Oleg Maskaev (KO11) in Atlantic City, in addition to Hasim Rahman (KO10) — but the Somoan strongman has never captured the coveted belt, resulting in his dubious label as the best non-world heavyweight champion of contemporary times.

Promoted by Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing, Tua will put his WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental heavyweight titles on the line against Barrett (34-9, 20 KOs), who is also perfect fighting in Atlantic City with a 7-0 (5 KOs) record.

“I believe everything happens for a reason,” Tua concluded. “I look at my time away from the sport, not by my choice, when I was able to be with my wife and boys, and I also got a good rest. I’ve been blessed; I’m lucky to still be fighting at this level. I’ve come back and gotten to this point in my career. At this stage of my life, I just want another world title shot. To have that chance I need to take care of business Saturday night against Barrett.”

New Zealand’s national indigenous broadcaster, Maori Television, will present exclusive, live and free-to-air coverage of Tua’s July 17th fight.
