Fans are invited out to La Sandia, a Mexican restaurant located inside Tysons Corner Center shopping mall, on Friday, July 9 at Noon to watch all 16 fighters step on the scales at the official weigh-in. Weigh-in sponsors include: Ed Hardy (providing boxers to the boxers), The Art of Shaving store and CakeLove, the retail bakery founded by Warren Brown. La Sandia elevates classic Mexican dishes with innovative and culinary techniques and fresh ingredients from local farms and markets.

Jimmy Lange Headlines 10th Patriot Center Show

Since starring in the first season of the boxing reality show The Contender on NBC in 2005, ‘fan favorite’ Jimmy Lange has served as the main attraction in all ten (including Saturday’s event) boxing cards held at the Patriot Center. After building his career and developing a strong loyal fan bases at shows throughout the Washington/Baltimore region, the Bishop O’Connell graduate has become the area’s top attraction averaging 5,000 fans per show. He’s compiled a 6-2-1 record and won three regional titles during this time.

Jimmy Lange Media Interviews & Appearances

Wednesday at Nats Park; Thursday on ESPN 980, CSN’s Washington Post Live and NBC4

Lange will accompany Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman to deliver the starting line-ups for the 7pm game between the Nats and the San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Nationals Park. On Thursday, Lange will talk the ‘sweet science’ live in-studio at 3pm with Scott Linn and Thom Loverro before heading over to Comcast SportsNet’s studios to appear on Washington Post Live with host Ivan Carter at 5pm. NBC4 is scheduled to run a preview story by Dan Hellie on Thursday during the 6pm broadcast.

“Chop Chop” Returns to Ring

Northeast D.C. native and former World Boxing Organization (WBO) light welterweight champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley takes on Detroit Southpaw Damian Fuller in the evening’s co-main event set for eight rounds. Corley is a last-minute replacement for Tim Coleman, who suffered a cut during training camp. Both fighters are battle-tested warriors with plenty of firepower and ring experience to make this a strong ‘fight-of-the-night’ candidate.

Rising Latino Stars Return to Patriot Center

Two of the area’s top Latino fighters are returning for their third bouts at the Patriot Center. “The Bolivian Queen” Jennifer Salinas of Manassas, who trains at Balance Gym in Washington, D.C., has attracted a strong regional following. She was born in the area, spent much of her childhood in Bolivia before moving back stateside. Meanwhile Haymarket, VA’s Juan “The Savior” Rodriquez, whose parents are El Salvadorian, has exhibited strong knockout power. All four wins have ended with a knockout, with only one going past one round. Salinas is an instructor at LA Boxing, while Rodriquez trains at Olympia Boxing Center in Falls Church.

Bolivian Queen Profiled by Rick Snider in the Washington Examiner

Veteran sports columnist Rick Snider of the Washington Examiner profiled Jennifer Salinas in his Sunday, July 4th column: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/sports/Bolivian-Queen-puts-up-her-dukes-97713754.html

Northern Virginia Trio’s Unbeaten Streaks on the Line

Three Northern Virginia fighters will look to remain unbeaten Saturday night. Virginia Military Institute (VMI) graduate and 2004 National Collegiate Boxing (139-lb) champion Todd “White Lightning” Wilson of Falls Church is seeking his eighth win against Calvin “Peco” Faggins of Marshall, VA in a six-round welterweight contest. Wilson, a senior director program delivery for Signature Government Solutions, fights out Annandale Boxing Club (ABC). Boasting punching prowess and a stellar amateur background, Wilson’s ABC teammate Zain “Tiger” Shah of Chantilly faces D.C.’s Antonio Walls in a four-round middleweight affair. Outside of boxing, Shah is a talented artist / photographer who works for a Washington advertising agency. Both fighters are making their Patriot Center debuts. Rodriquez is the third Virginia-based fighter with unblemished ring record.

Entertaining Ring Entrances Enhance Patriot Center Card

Fans will witness some exciting and flashy ring entrances on Saturday, highlighted by Jimmy Lange’s signature theatrical walk featuring Johnny Cash’s When the Man Comes Around and Metallica’s Enter Sandman. Showcasing each fighter’s heritage, Todd Wilson will be led to the ring by a single bagpipe performer while Juan Rodriquez will be accompanied by an entourage of supporters waving the El Salvadorian flag. Look for another flashy entrance from the always colorful and charismatic “Chop Chop” Corley, who was driven to the ring on the back of a motorcycle last fall in his Patriot Center debut. He promises another electrifying moment on Saturday.

Reid to Sing National Anthem

While Jonathan Reid, Lange’s former teammate from season one of The Contender, will not be fighting on the card as originally scheduled, the Nashville, TN fighter will still be participating by belting out the National Anthem prior to the Main Event. Fans may recall Reid displaying his vocal talents when he performed the song live at The Contender finale between Sergio Mora and Peter Manfredo Jr. in Las Vegas.

Henry “Dis-com-bob-u-lating” Jones Returns as Ring Announcer

Get ready to ‘clap your hands in the stands, stomp your feet in your seats and use your voice of choice’ as the one-and-only, veteran D.C. ring announcer, Henry “Dis-com-bob-u-lating” Jones brings his signature style back to Fairfax to announce all eight fights on Saturday night.

Primetime Hosts Official After Party

All fans are invited to attend the official After Party at Primetime Sports Bar & Grille located in Fairfax at 11250 James Swart Circle (off Main St in Fairfax Court Shopping Center).

International appeal: Tom Watson in range of stardom on worldwide level

Posted on | July 7, 2010 | No Comments

Tom Watson has a unique opportunity within the Maximum Fighting Championship.

By MFC Staff

Already a top-ranked contender for the MFC’s middleweight title and one of the most-potent strikers in the entire organization, Watson is in position to become something that the MFC has never had before – a truly international star.

Because of his mass appeal and social media accessibility, Watson has become a popular figure in his native England and in both countries where he trains – the United States and Canada. His Canadian fan base in particular has grown exponentially thanks in large part to his appearance at MFC 24: Heat XC but Watson is far from forgotten in his homeland or in the U.S.

While the MFC has featured countless fighters over the years in prominent roles and as home-town favorites, Watson has the chance to become the first fighter to have international drawing power.

“I’ve always had a bit of a following in the U.K. due to the fights I’ve been involved in,” explained Watson, who will sport a 12-3 record going into his expected clash at MFC 26 in September.

“It was great to see the Canadian fans appreciate the humor of my (ring) entrance at MFC 24 and I hope to give them more of the same in September. I have been training in America for over three years now so that has helped my exposure in the States as well.”

At MFC 24, Watson strutted to the ring to funky soul music all while sporting a gorilla mask in homage to his nickname “Kong.” But what’s a stylish ring entrance worth if you don’t back it up with some substance when the bell rings? Watson certainly did that, scoring a near-lethal head-kick knockout of Travis Galbraith. The first-round sudden stoppage is most definitely a candidate for the MFC’s Knockout of the Year and instantly put Watson on the map as a contender and budding star.

That convincing win was Watson’s seventh straight positive verdict and was a resounding debut, both in the organization and on North American soil. Watson will get his chance to show the world his talents at MFC 26 when he steps into the ring for the first time on HDNet Fights.

“(Against Galbraith) I remember being thoroughly prepared for a jiu-jitsu battle and didn’t really train too much striking too be honest,” recalled Watson. “But years’ of hard work is always there and as soon as it landed I knew it was over. No one can take my kicks clean on the jaw and not get knocked out. My coach Eric O’Keefe put together a great game plan. We knew what Galbraith’s moves would be and the rest fell into place.”

And so did Galbraith, with a crashing face-first thud to the canvas. Should Watson come away from MFC 26 with another victory tucked securely into his back pocket, he has been assured of a crack at the MFC’s middleweight crown – an emblem that has only been worn once before when Patrick Cote took the honor way back at MFC 9 in March 2006.

“Of course it won’t be easy but nothing worth doing in life is easy. I came into the MFC with the belief that I would become champion. I will achieve this goal,” declared Watson, who is hoping the road to the title goes straight through Drew McFedries – his potential opponent at MFC 26.

“I really hope it is McFedries as for sure he will come and stand and bang with me. I have never been knocked out in 50 fights but he has big power so for the fans that is a great fight. I have no doubt I can do whatever it takes to win and put myself forward to fight whoever the MFC decides.”

One thing for sure with Watson, whatever fights await him, he will undoubtedly do his best at creating as much hype as possible and even fire off a few verbal jousts at his foe. It’s just ingrained in British fighters that part of their job is to heat up the pre-fight antics with some ribbing – good-natured or not. While some in the martial arts world frown on that behavior, it’s a necessary part of the business both for the fighter and the organization to stand out in the crowded world scene.

Like his good friend Paul Daley, Watson isn’t shy about tossing out the quote-worthy lines, shooting them out like a stiff jab.

“Not all British fighters are like that … just the good ones!”

If you think you might want to interview prominent fighters and fight industry figures, and if you think it would be cool to get into all kinds of local fighting events for free, we can help you realize your own dream by giving you the secrets we learned the hard way to put our own sites on the map. Fight News Unlimited started with an idea really, and then a MySpace page with a huge blog, and it became a Web-site within a few months. The Fight News Unlimited Network Founder Rich Bergeron was a small town newspaper reporter who wrote a few magazine articles here and there and did some pieces online for a few boxing Web-sites before he started Fight News Unlimited. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE OLDEST SURVIVING RECORD OF FIGHT NEWS UNLIMITED AS IT USED TO APPEAR TO VIEWERS.

Since then, Bergeron has been breaking big stories and covering every angle of the combat sports with a popular weekly talk show and podcast page and spin-off sites like fightspaceonline.com and fightradio.info. We’ve outlasted lots of other companies since we started. Our original radio show was on nowlive.com, which doesn’t even exist anymore as of this writing. The domain’s blank and up for sale. Rich and his staff have interviewed some big names over the years like Oscar De La Hoya, Donald Trump, and Ken Shamrock (just to name a few).

Rich gets into all kinds of events now for free with at least one photographer. It’s a dream job that all started with a simple MySpace profile and led to a blog that is now ranked in the top million sites in all the world. Now Rich gets to go backstage at all the big events and interact with all kinds of combat sports celebrities. Check out Rich this past May with Bas Rutten:
