This coming Friday, Stoke Newington’s rising Light Middleweight star Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng is back in action on the under card of the Sky television broadcast, Frank Maloney promoted, British Flyweight title clash between Shinny Bayaar and Ashley Sexton at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham, Essex.

In his last fight, back in January, Ochieng decisively stopped Plymouth’s Jon Harrison at the Brentwood Centre in Brentwood, Essex. Harrison fought hard and tried all that he could to stop the stylish Ochieng from utilising his fight plan. Ochieng was patient though, constantly working away on Harrison’s body until the opportunity arose to finish him off with a beautiful left hook in the second round.

For his upcoming fight Ochieng will be facing Nottingham’s prospect Curtis Valentine. This exciting fight has an extra frisson as both Ochieng and Valentine are currently unbeaten.

Following some sparring at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, under the watchful eyes of his trainer/manager Brian Lawrence, a relaxed and smiling Ochieng spoke of his preparations for the upcoming clash with Valentine. “I’m looking forward to Friday, I’ve been training hard and I’m in good shape.

He’s a good fighter, but I believe I am more skilled. So It’s going to be a good fight. He’s a brawler, who likes to come forward, and I’ve heard he can hit a bit. That’s good but I can hit and I can box as well. It’s going to be good fight. You know what I’m saying, I’ll be smart, box and win.

I’ve sparred some very good fighters. I have far more experience than my fight record shows. You know, I sparred Darren Barker and I’ve been to Belgium to spar ‘Sugar Jackson’ Osei Bonsu, you know, these are World class fighters and the experience of sparring with them has bought me on more. I’m confident, I’m more experienced and I’m confident I will win the fight.”

May 22 IBO Middleweight Title Fight at Mohegan Sun

NEW YORK (May 9, 2010) – Veteran Angel “El Toro” Hernandez is arguably, pound-for-pound, one of the toughest boxers in the business. The Mexican native, fighting out of Chicago, has parlayed impressive back-to-back performances into a May 22 title fight against Peter Manfredo, Jr. at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“It’s all in his nickname – ‘Toro’ means bull,” Angel’s trainer “Fearless” Fernando Hernandez describes his fighter. “He is a charger who has evolved into a good boxer. He’s very tough!”

The 34-year-old Hernandez (30-7, 17 KOs) has taken a different road to his upcoming battle against Manfredo (34-6, 18 KOs) for the vacant IBO middleweight championship. His last two fights have been wins against multiple world title challenger Antwun Echols (31-11-4), last August when Echols failed to answer the bell for the seventh round, and a 10-round decision against then hot prospect James McGirt Jr. (19-1-1) on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

During the course of his 14-year pro career, the battle-tested Hernandez has also defeated Randall, Larry Marks, Victor Rosado, J.C. Candelo and Leonard Townsend, in addition to having fought Kassim Ouma, Raymond Joval, Vanes Martirosyan and Rhoshii Wells.

Hernandez, who will be making his debut fighting for promoter Boxing 360, feels that his time has finally come. “This opportunity is long overdue,” Angel said about his first fight in New England. “I’ve proven myself but haven’t had a world title shot since I fought Winky Wright (LDEC12) in 2003. I’m ready and excited about my fight for the IBO title.”

Manfredo was stopped in his two previous world title shots to Joe Calzaghe (IBF super middleweight) and Sakio Bika (IBO super middleweight). His notable victims include former world champions Frankie Randall and Grady Brewer, along with contenders Scott Pemberton, Alfonso Gomez, and Matt Vanda.

“I know Peter,” Angel added. “I remember him from when we both were sparring partners at training camp for Fernando Vargas. And then I heard a lot about him on The Contender (Manfredo lost to Sergio Mora in the Season One finale). He can’t bring anything into the ring that I haven’t seen before and I doubt he’s tougher than the other guys I’ve fought. I’m not underestimating him but I’m a veteran with a lot of confidence I will walk away May 29th as the IBO middleweight champion of the world.”

Los Angeles, CA (May 8, 2010) – In its nearly 30 years in the boxing industry Promoter Dan Goossen has grown accustomed to developing many young boxers from the amateur ranks into World Champions. Now, Goossen Tutor Promotions has entered into a promotional agreement with a boxer who holds a World Championship title belt with the goal of developing him into a Marquee World Champion.

Shumenov carries the distinction of winning the Light Heavyweight World Championship with the fewest number of professional fights under his belt, having won the title in just his 10th professional bout in a January 2010 rematch of a controversial loss against Spain’s Gabriel Campillo.

A 26-year old native of Chimkent, Kazakhstan, currently living and training in Las Vegas, NV with renowned trainer Kevin Barry, the 6-2, 175 lb. Shumenov (9-1, 6 KOs) is among the most unique figures to explode on the boxing scene in recent memory.

Following an outstanding amateur career in which he represented his native country as a Silver medalist in the first-ever Afro-Asian Games in India in 2003; as a Gold medal winner in the 2004 Asian Championships in the Philippines; and as a member of its Olympic Boxing Team in Athens, Greece the same year, Shumenov and his brother, Chingis, moved to Las Vegas and formed KZ Event Productions, Inc. in 2007.

Shumenov then turned pro under his own promotional umbrella and debuted with a first-round stoppage of Walter Edwards in Wilson, NC. In his next seven fights, this remarkable warrior would go on to face – and defeat — a pair of former world champions in Montell Griffin and Byron Mitchell, as well as Epifanio Mendoza, who had an unsuccessful world title challenge against WBC champion Chad Dawson.

Then, in August of last year, came the disputed loss to Campillo by majority decision in Shumenov’s first attempt at a World Championship — in Beibut’s home country of Kazakhstan. A rematch was ordered by the WBA and Shumenov captured the title by split-decision in Las Vegas earlier this year.

In becoming the WBA Light Heavyweight World Champion in just his 10th bout, Shumenov shattered the previous record of 15 bouts by Jeff Harding back in 1989. He also became the fourth boxer from Kazakhstan to win a professional world title. And now Shumenov – who, along with his brother, Chingis, will continue to sign and develop talent for KZ Event Productions, Inc. – has decided to have Goossen Tutor promote his boxing matches so he can give one-hundred percent focus on training and becoming the undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion of the World.

“I’m excited about this arrangement with Dan (Goossen), one of the leading promoters in boxing today,” Shumenov declared. “They get a lot of television dates and have a strong stable of boxers and they always seem to maximize the opportunity for their boxers. That is all I can ask for… I will do the rest.”

Shumenov’s first fight under the Goossen Tutor banner is expected to take place in July in the United States against the very tough and undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Uzelkov (22-0, 14 KOs), the mandatory challenger for the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship.

Leites, Jimmo star at MFC 25:Two decisive victories for headliners at Vindication

Thales Leites made quick work of Jesse Taylor, and Ryan Jimmo made a huge statement with a convincing victory at the Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 25: Vindication.

In front of more than 4,000 fans at the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, and live on HDNet, Leites (17-3) submitted Taylor with an impressive triangle choke at the 2:27 mark of the first round. Taylor (14-6) initially forced Leites to the mat with a double-leg takedown, but the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, product scored big a strike from the bottom that opened a deep gash on Taylor’s eyebrow. That was the beginning of the end as Leites smoothly transitioned into the submission manoeuvre and forced the tapout.

It was a second straight win in the Maximum Fighting Championship for Leites and moved him to the top of the contender list for the MFC middleweight title.

In the night’s co-main event, Jimmo (13-1) surely shocked a number of mixed martial arts pundits as he dominated Wilson Gouveia (12-8) en route to a clear-cut unanimous decision. Jimmo showed his patented counter-striking in Round 1 and then thoroughly applied the heat on Gouveia in Round 2. Jimmo surprisingly took Gouveia down but instead of being caught up in the Brazilian’s jiu-jitsu skills, Jimmo unleashed a ferocious ground-and-pound assault. At one point, Jimmo had Gouveia stacked up in a neutral corner and rained down countless strikes that nearly forced referee John Braak to step in and stop bout. At the end of the round, a battered and bruised Gouveia needed help returning to his corner.

Jimmo continued to showcase a much more confident attack in Round 3, and despite getting caught with a punch from Gouveia in the early moments, he cruised to the win. A pair of judges gave Jimmo a 10-8 score in Round 2 and he finished with counts of 30-27, 30-26, 30-26 in his favor. Jimmo, who now fights out of Edmonton, Alberta, was given a huge ovation by the home-town crowd for the best performance of his career – a result which has tabbed him as the front-runner for a shot at the MFC light heavyweight title.

Meanwhile, former MFC light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton showed that cleaning up his act outside the ring had a profound effect on his in-ring performance. Newton (13-6), who hails from Norwalk, California, utilized outstanding takedowns and control to take a unanimous decision from crowd favorite Dwayne Lewis (11-5). Newton, whose corner was anchored by MFC lightweight champ Antonio McKee, put a stop to his own three-fight losing skid while snapping Lewis’s own seven-fight win streak. The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Lewis who had more than 400 fans in the audience from his home town of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

In an entertaining welterweight encounter, veteran Pete Spratt (21-17) picked up the Knockout of the Night by stopping Luigi Fioravanti (17-7) at 4:02 of Round 3. Spratt took control in Round 2 doing most of his damage with brutal kicks to the body. In the third, Spratt dropped Fioravanti with a stiff jab and then pounced with a barrage that brought upon the stoppage. It was the second straight win in the Maximum Fighting Championship for the native of San Antonio, Texas, who captured the MFC’s 2009 Knockout of the Year in his last appearance at MFC 22 back in October.

Gavin Neil (8-1) picked up the Submission of the Night by coaxing a tapout from Richie Hightower (8-4) at 2:52 of Round 1. Hightower was done in by a wicked left hook from Neil and the Victoria, British Columbia, native moved quickly into a fight-ending rear-naked choke.

MURRAY TARGETS ALL-ENGLISH WORLD TITLE CLASH WITH MITCHELL

JOHN Murray claimed the European lightweight belt and immediately set his sights on an all-English world championship clash with Kevin Mitchell.

Manchester-based Murray, 25, won the vacant European title on Friday with an 11th round stoppage of Cardiff’s Gary Buckland in Matchroom Sport’s latest boxing show.

Murray also held on to his British belt with a dominant performance at the Kingsway Leisure Centre in Widnes.

However, Murray now wants to fight the winner of next Saturday’s WBO world title clash between Londoner Kevin Mitchell and Australia’s Michael Katsidis.

“Mitchell fights Katsidis and there’s no reason why I can’t fight the winner – I’d love to,” said Murray in an exclusive interview with MatchroomSport.com.

“I shouted out Katsidis after the (Jon) Thaxton fight and Mitchell has come up a weight but now I’m back on the map and it’s time for me to kick on.

“I’ve won the European title and want to start mixing with these guys. Both are strong warriors but I would love to fight them.

“I think Mitchell can out box Katsidis but I’m not bothered who wins, I just want to fight the winner.

“Mitchell is doing it the right way by taking chances and not avoiding anyone.

“Full credit to him as he wants to fight the best to be the best so he is a man cut from the same cloth as me.

“I wouldn’t duck anyone and neither would he so it would be a massive fight for us, the fans and a massive fight for Britain.”

Friday night’s contest, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports, was the first time Murray had been in action since October but he did enough to extend his undefeated record to 29 fights.

“It was a good performance considering the amount of time I’ve had out of the ring and I was pleased to get the rounds under my belt against a strong, ambitious kid,” added Murray.

“It wasn’t a vintage performance but still good enough to grind out a win and that’s what you need to do.

“Sometimes I thought I had him going and I could’ve picked up the pace and started putting the shots together cleaner. But I was pleased and didn’t lose a round.

“Buckland had only lost one out of 19 and this was his big opportunity. Against a strong kid I had to show my quality and that’s what I did – I showed my class.

“It was a tough night at the office but I did what I had to and got a stoppage.

“I’m very proud to become European champion and I’ve done everything the right way. I’ve been WBC youth world title holder, Young Boxer of the Year, English champion and now European champion so the next step is world titles.

“I’ve just broken into Ring Magazine’s top ten so I’m nearly there.”

Matchroom Sport’s next boxing show is Prizefighter Super-Bantamweights on Saturday, May 29 at the York Hall in London’s east end.

Clark out-classes Pires to win NABA U.S. Junior Welterweight Crown

LINCOLN, Rhode Island (May 7, 2010) – Former world title challenger Michael “Cold Blood” Clark pitched a near shutout against New Bedford police officer Jason “School Boy” Pires in tonight’s main event on the “Spring Fever” card, presented by Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., at Twin River in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Clark (40-5-1, 18 KOs), fighting out of Columbus (OH) out-punched a game Pires (22-4-1), 1996 U.S. Olympic Team alternate, from the opening bell, flooring him in the eighth round. Clark captured the NABA U.S. junior welterweight title by way of a unanimous 9-round decision (90-80, 90-80, 89-81).

Two undefeated heavyweight prospects entered the ring in tonight’s co-featureandt South Carolina-invader Winston Thorpe (3-0) spoiled Cape Cod’s Jesse “Bad News” Barboza (3-1) evening via a 4-round split decision.

Hartford middleweight David Bauza (5-0) got off of the mat in the first round and went on to win a 4-round split decision versus Richard “Hurricane” Grant.

Super middleweight Greg McCoy (1-1-1) recorded his first pro victory, upsetting previously undefeated Keith Kozlin (5-1) in a back-and-forth, give-and-take fight by 4-round majority decision.

The pro debut of New Haven super middleweight Rick Dawson, older brother of Chad Dawson, couldn’t have gone any better as he stopped pro-debuting Damion Reed in the second round.

WORCESTER, Mass. (May 7, 2010) – Two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim “Main-iac” Sylvia feels disrespected regarding his May 21st showdown against the first 5-time World’s Strongest Man, iconic Polish powerhouse Mariusz “Dominator” Pudzianowski, headlining the “Moosin: God of Martial Arts” pay-per-view event, at the DCU Center in Worcester.

Sylvia (25-6-0), a natïve of Eastbrook, Maine, has defeated many of the top MMA heavyweights and super heavyweights – Andrei Arlovski (2) Brandon Vera, Jeff Monson, Wes Sims, Ricco Rodriguez, Mike Whitehead (2), Ben Rothwell and Jason Lambert. On the other hand, the 6-1, 275-pound Pudzianowski (1-0), a national hero in Poland, has had only one pro MMA fight.

In addition to his feats of strength as the World’s Strongest Man, Mariusz practices karate, boxing and even finished second last year in Poland’s version of “Dancing With The Stars.” Challenging a fighter of Sylvia’s stature in the May 21st super heavyweight main event, however, sends one clear message to the 6-8, 280-pound Sylvia.

“They’re underestimating me and obviously feel that I’m done,” Sylvia said. “I have another thing coming. He’s big, strong and a good athlete, but I’m going to knock him out. My last opponent (Jason Riley) thought the same thing and I knocked him out in the first round. I would have gotten him out even earlier but I broke my right hand.”
