Gleason’s Gym will host the New York City Empire State Games three Saturday evenings this Month on our Monthly Amateur Boxing Series. The three Saturday nights are: May 15, 22 and 29, 2010.
The shows will include amateur boxers that are part of our Monthly Boxing Series. The shows will include JO, Novice, Senior and Master bouts.
In addition to the Monthly Boxing Series participants, we will be hosting the New York City Empire State Games. This is a State wide tournament where the winners out of New York City will meet winners from other areas of the State in Buffalo at The 2010 Empire State Games in late July.
The weigh in will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.
All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

“If Manny Pacquaio wants to fight, it is not hard to find me. We were going to make the fight a couple of months back but it didn’t happen. I take my hat off to Mosley. He had problems in the past but he’s a warrior. He took the blood and urine tests. I just want everyone to be on an even playing field. If every athlete is clean in the sport of boxing, take the test. If Manny Pacquaio takes the blood and urine tests, we can fight. If he doesn’t, we won’t make the fight.
“Here was another tremendous fight, another tremendous turn out.
“There was a point to prove; to see who was the best welterweight out there.
“Do I have to fight? No I don’t have to fight, absolutely not. I truly believe the numbers we did are unbelievable.
“I always say, put them in front of me, I’ll beat them.
“My dad, Roger and I have chemistry. The game plan was unbelievable. I looked back at my dad and he’s telling me something. I looked back at Roger and he’s telling me the same thing.
“I’ve got the will to win under the lights, but we all don’t form under the lights the same.
“After a while I think Mosley went into survival mode. All he was trying to do was survive.
“Every fight is different, every fighter is different. Everyone was talking about how Mosley is stronger, how Mosley is faster. I rocked him more than he rocked me.
“At one point I thought he was going to cough it up, but he held on valiantly.
“I’ve been dominating fighters since the 90s, but I always say I’m closer to 40 than I am to 21. I’m not chasing fighters.
“Even with the second round, I knew I was the strongest guy form the beginning. Every fighter is totally different.
“Mentally in the fight I was talking to him. Telling him ‘Your jab isn’t faster than mine; if it is let me see.’
“Over the years, when I’m at home, I never study an opponent. They are going to be totally different in the ring.
“I believe that it’s not bragging or boasting if you can back it up.
“The ultimate goal it to try to find a fighter than can beat me. There’s a lot of young tough fighters out there that I take my hat off to, that I want to see do well.
“As of right now we just want to go home, reevaluate a few things, and see what we come up with. As of right now I just want to spend some time with my family.
“I’m here to just fight the best that’s out there and be the best you can be.
“Zab Judah hit me with a better shot and DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley hit me with a better shot.
“I think he tried, but it’s just me being able to show my versatility to adapt and adjust. My game plan was going to work, break him down in every way.
“I think a lot of people are surprised. I just believe in myself, these types of things happen in big fights.”

“I tried, it was a good fight, it was that close. He’s a hell of a fighter. He’s a great fighter. He did what he needed to do to win the fight.

“I think after I caught him with that big right hand I opened up to much and played into his hands. I was too tight. When I hit him with the big right hand, I thought I was going to get the knockout.

Edouard back to his Winning Ways

Daniel “The Haitian Sensation” Edouard (23-2-2 KOs 14) made short work of Panamanian Champion, Jose Arosemena (12-6-2 KOs 10), knocking him out in the 2nd round of their scheduled 11 round WBA Fedelatin Middleweight main event held at Hotel Melia Panama Canal, Colon City, Panama last night, Friday, April 30.
In front of a capacity crowd Edouard, who weighed in a at very fit 156 1/2 pounds, looked in very good condition. Arosemena forced the action early but this proved to be a bad strategy. Edouard, in response, reeled off several controlled jabs and strong right hands, ultimately knocking out the challenger at 2:33 of second round.
Other results on the night yielded wins for former interim WBA super bantamweight title holder, Panamanian, Ricardo Cordoba over Nicaraguan, Jose Guiterrez. Undefeated prospect, Jamaican, Nicholas Walters won by knock out over Alexander Alonso, and Andua Vargas beat Humberto Pena.
Upset of the evening was a loss suffered by undefeated Haitian prospect, Evens Pierre at the hands of Panamanian, Rosano Lawrence. Pierre’s record falls to 12-1 with 11 KOs.
Edouard plans to return to his native Haiti and continue helping with the earthquake relief efforts. When asked what’s next in the ring Edouard responded, “I don’t know yet. I’m ready to go again right now. I guess we’ll see what happens.”

DICKINSON CLAIMS PRIZEFIGHTER TROPHY / BAD CUT FORCES OUT HIDE

JON-LEWIS DICKINSON is the Prizefighter Cruiserweights II champion after a night of high drama and tension.
Durham-based Dickinson, 24 on Monday, floored substitute Nick Okoth three times in the final and claimed a knockout victory at the York Hall in London’s East End.
However, there had been an earlier twist as pre-tournament favourite Herbie Hide became the first fighter to be unable to continue after winning a fight.
Hide was in complete control in his quarter-final against Wayne Brooks and floored the Welshman in the opening round. But a clash of heads in the second resulted in Hide sustaining a bad cut near his right eye.
Hide eventually won the fight on points, but, with an expected shot at the WBC world title later in the year, he reluctantly withdrew on medical advice.
But nothing could take the glory away from Dickinson, who now extends his undefeated record to 8-0.
“Winning Prizefighter proves what I’m all about,” said a delighted Dickinson. “It’s absolutely fantastic. I said I would win it and I have done.
“It was tough but as soon as I got into my rhythm I really enjoyed it and it was a great night – the best ever experience.
“I was here to box anyone in front of me. Herbie Hide pulled out but he has only got two arms and two legs just like everyone else. Personally, watching him tonight, I think I would’ve beaten him.
“But I still had to do a job on the person in front of me and that was Nick Okoth.
“I’m still just a novice and I’ve never done four rounds but it does make a statement to the rest of the division how good I am.”
Hide’s injury meant Okoth, who earlier in the day had been working in his day job as a firefighter in Twickenham, became the first reserve to be used in Prizefighter history.
A fresh Okoth then claimed the biggest victory of his career with a points triumph over former Commonwealth champion Darren Corbett.
Dickinson had made his way to the final with a controversial split-decision points verdict over Londoner Leon Williams in the quarter-final.
He then followed that with a stunning victory over Mark Krence, a two-time British heavyweight title challenger, who retired at the end of the first round after being floored twice.
In the other fights, Krence claimed a unanimous points victory over Zahid Kahut in the opening fight of the night.
Corbett, a semi-finalist in Prizefighter Cruiserweights I last year, again reached the final four with a points triumph over John Anthony but again could not reach the final.

I Just returned from the Bellator Fights held in KC. This promotion loves wrestlers. We do return to the Brute adidas studios this week for a packed show. We have some special guests stepping up to the Mic to talk wrestling, camps the NCAA Championships and much more.

Hudson Taylor- Graduating senior, one of the very talented wrestlers from the east coast will join us. Originally recruited and coached by Pat Santoro, Hudson was recently awarded the ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete among all his other accolades.
Bruce Burnett- Head Coach US Naval Academy will join us to discuss past season, recruiting and summer camps. Navy as quite the offering.
Jack Childs- Head Coach of the Drexel Dragons. The NCAA’s are coming us in Philly next year. Jack may give us some insight on places to eat, sleep and ways to save money in the city of brotherly love.
Lenny Zalesky- Head Coach of UC Davis. It was recently announced that his program along with other sports would be eliminated from the athletic offerings. He’ll update us on the progress of putting this program back together and what you can do to get involved.

Tickets Go On Sale Tomorrow
LOS ANGELES (April 30, 2010) – Knockout artist “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-5) will collide with former STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) at a catch weight of 195 pounds in the main event when STRIKEFORCE Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) hits Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles, Calif. on Wednesday, June 16.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. PT tomorrow/Saturday, May 1, at STAPLES Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and STRIKEFORCE’S official website (www.strikeforce.com). Tickets will also be sold at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE box office on days when events take place there.
The first-ever STRIKEFORCE event scheduled for mid-week will take place in the midst of the E3 Expo, the premier trade show for computer and video games. During E3 Expo 2010 at the L.A. Convention Center, EA SPORTS™ will exhibit its highly anticipated title, EA SPORTS MMA, in which STRIKEFORCE is featured as a premier league.
Sobral’s start will be his first since he relinquished his STRIKEFORCE belt to superstar Gegard Mousasi, who stopped the Brazilian fighter one minute into their meeting at San Jose, Calif.’s HP Pavilion on Dec. 19, 2009. Prior to the loss, Sobral had reeled off five consecutive victories.
Sobral, 34, who resides in Orange County, Calif., has faced and defeated some of the sport’s toughest competitors during a 13-year career. On Sept. 6, 2003, he defeated three consecutive, first-rate opponents – Trevor Prangley, Mauricio Rua, and Jeremy Horn – in one night of single-elimination tournament action.
Also slated for action on the card are former WWE champion turned undefeated heavyweight MMA sensation Bobby Lashley (5-0) and lightweight star K.J. Noons (8-2)
Doors at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE will open for the event at 5:15 p.m. PT. The first non-televised preliminary bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card fight will begin at 8 p.m.
The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
