MFC 25 boasts stacked lineup of top talent

The fight lineup for MFC 25: Vindication is proving to be one of the most talent-laden rosters in the organization’s history.
With the official main event still to be announced, the MFC has already lined up five action-packed fights to highlight the card which will air live on HDNet Fights on Friday, May 7 from the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.
In the co-main event, a pair of light heavyweights will battle for the position of No. 1 contender for the MFC’s 205-pound belt. Top-ranked Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo (12-1), who will be fighting in his home town, takes on Brazilian standout Wilson Gouveia (12-7), who is making his promotional debut and taking on a new role in the light heavyweight ranks moving up from middleweight. Jimmo has won 12 straight fights since his pro debut and is coming off a convincing decision victory over former MFC light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton at MFC 23. Gouveia has put together an impressive career resume that includes wins over such notables as Jason MacDonald, Jason Lambert, and Seth Petruzelli.
In another pivotal light heavyweight encounter, Dwayne Lewis (11-4) of Fort McMurray, Alberta, meets Mike Nickels (8-3) of Denver, Colorado. Lewis has won seven straight fights – five in a row by KO/TKO including back-to-back wins over Marvin Eastman and Ryan McClain at MFC 23 and 24, respectively. Nickels made his organizational debut at MFC 22, ultimately capturing a third-round submission over David Heath in an all-out war that earned the honor of MFC Fight of the Year for 2009.
A middleweight fight between David Heath (14-6) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and “King” Solomon Hutcherson (11-6) of Racine, Wisconsin, is also on the docket for MFC 25. This will be Heath’s first fight in the 185-pound division and he has a chance to turn things around for himself following the loss to Nickels. Heath holds a key career win over former MFC light heavyweight champion Roger Hollett. Hutcherson has endeared himself to the loyal MFC fans with an all-out hustle approach. He bested Dave Mewborn with a dominating decision at MFC 20 and fell just short in a close decision loss to Jason MacDonald at MFC 23.
An explosive welterweight matchup has also been signed for MFC 25, one that should certainly spark plenty of aggressive fireworks. Luigi “The Italian Tank” Fioravanti (16-6), fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida, will take on “The Secret Weapon” Pete Spratt (20-17) of Dallas, Texas, in what promises to be a war of accomplished strikers. Fioravanti will be out for redemption following his organizational-debut loss at MFC 22, while Spratt served notice that he still has big-time punching power with his 2009 Knockout of the Year verdict against Nathan Gunn at MFC 22.
As well, the recently signed lightweight bout between Richie “The Dirty Samurai” Hightower (8-3) and “Ragin” Kajan Johnson (17-11-1) will open the HDNet televised portion of the card. Hightower, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, makes the move down to the 155-pound ranks to take on Johnson, a native of Burns Lake, British Columbia, who added to his resume with a TKO win over Josh Russell at Heat XC 4.

Grano avenges only loss with decision against Brown

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (March 12, 2010) – Fan favorite Tony “TNT” Grano gained revenge for his only loss as a pro, winning a unanimous 10-round decision last night against Mark “Oak Tree” Brown in the main event on the “Brace For Impact” card, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., (CES), in a sold-out Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
Grano (17-1-1, 13 KOs) was cruising along through a rough fight until early in the final round, when lightning nearly struck again as Brown (15-3, 7 KOs), who knocked out Tony in the 8th round of their first fight, dropped Grano with an overhand right early in the 10th round. Grano, however, kept his composure and remained out of trouble to win on the judges’ scorecards (98-91, 97-92, 97-92).
“I didn’t want to overextend myself and rush in,” Grano commented. “This (revenge) was sweet. He’s a tough guy. He comes to fight. I give him credit for giving me a rematch.”
In the third round of the co-feature, super bantamweight Mike “Machine Gun” Oliver (23-2, 8 KOs) unloaded a right uppercut that dropped former 2-time world champion Kermin Guardia (37-12) for the 10-count in the third round.
“I did everything I had to do, everything that (head coach John) Scully told me,” Oliver explained after the fight. “I was relaxed and focused, instead of getting crazy in the ring. I felt real good. I cracked him to the body. It was a good shot and then he went down. I’m building everything back up (after suffering his only two losses, two years ago).”
Living legend and Hall of Fame trainer, Angelo Dundee, was inducted into the CES Ring of Honor during a special ceremony that included promoter Jimmy Burchfield and 5-time world champion Vinny Paz, who is a charter member of this exclusive club.
2008 U.S. Olympian Sadam “World Kid” Ali (6-0, 3 KOs) turned in an impressive performance, highlighted by the Knockout of the Night, in the third round against Jose “Hands of Steel” Duran. Ali hurt Duran early in the third with a left hook to the temple area and a finished him off with a right, followed by a vicious left hook that sent Duran to the mat for the 10 count, and his mouthpiece flying into his corner. “In the amateurs I used a lot of speed,” Ali said after the fight. My power has kicked in on by itself. In the pros you have to have power.”
Undefeated, power-punching Puerto Rican middleweight David Bauza (4-0) went the distance for the first time, out-pointing Erix Quintros in a 4-round bout for a majority decision that saw Quintros staggered a few times but never down.
Super middleweights Manuel Antonio Lopes (5-0-2) and Greg McCoy (0-1-1) fought to an entertaining 4-round majority draw.
New York light heavyweight Joe “The Irish Bomber” Smith, Jr. (3-0, 3 KOs) registered his third straight knockout victory, stopping Carlos Adams only 43-seconds into the opening round.
New Haven super lightweight Edwin Soto (3-0) kept his unbeaten record intact, out-classing veteran Joey Ortega by way of a second-round technical knockout.
CES moves over to Twin River (Lincoln, RI) next Friday night (Mar. 19), featuring unbeaten junior welterweight Danny O’Connor, in “ShamRock’d.”

THE LEWIS ARMY: A STORM FROM THE NORTH

Are Dwayne Lewis and Company Taking Over the MFC?
Anyone who’s driven the 435 kms from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Edmonton understands that it isn’t the kind of thing you do just for a fun night out. So how is it that Fort McMurray-based MMA fighter Dwayne Lewis can come down to fight in the Maximum Fighting Championship – in the dead of a northern Canadian winter – and be followed by a legion of almost 300 fans?
Easily recognizable as a deafeningly loud sea of black “Team Lewis” t-shirts taking up most, if not all, of the floor seats at any MFC event, the grassroots phenomenon known as the Lewis Army is the type of thing that makes the Maximum Fighting Championship so special. How does something like this start?
Ask Sandy Bowman, Dwayne’s manager and the owner of Bowman’s Mixed Martial Arts.
Realizing Dwayne’s popularity early on, Bowman was the one who came up with the “Team Lewis” t-shirts and started providing them to fans who bought MFC tickets from Bowman’s MMA. An instant hit with Fort McMurray’s MMA fans, the shirts caught the eye of Kevin from Shah-K-Mate Clothing, who saw them while watching an MFC event on HDNet. Shah-K-Mate now makes special designs in very limited runs for each of Dwayne’s fights. The effect is staggering. Imagine being a hometown fighter and having your own crowd outnumbered by out-of-towners all wearing the same shirt!
Of course it helps that Dwayne Lewis (11-4-0, 7 KOs, 3 subs) is an exciting fighter. “I’m comfortable standing up and throwing bombs”, says Lewis when asked about his fighting style. And it shows in the results. Nine of his eleven wins ended in the first round. Of his 15 fights, only five have gone into the
second round.
This approach can come at a price though. Fighting Aron Lofton at MFC 17: Hostile Takeover, Lewis suffered a devastating knockout in the opening seconds of the first round. But since then he’s stormed back with a seven-fight winning streak, knocking out MMA legend Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman in the process.
Heavy hands aren’t Dwayne’s only weapon though. Those writing Lewis off as a ferocious striker who’s just been lucky enough to have avoided fights with accomplished grapplers will be surprised to hear that not only is he a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Rodrigo Munduruca, but also has a brown belt from Miletich Fighting Systems. Yes, Dwayne Lewis is a complete fighter.
But is a winning record enough to cultivate a fan base of Lewis Army proportions? There must be something else at work. Sandy Bowman attributes much of Dwayne’s popularity to a friendly nature that shows up regularly at the gym.
“If Dwayne sees someone doing something incorrectly, whether it’s a housewife hitting the bag or a local kid doing padwork, he’ll stop what he’s doing to give them a hand.”
Talking to Lewis, one thing becomes clear right away – he is definitely not the stereotypical MMA fighter so often demonized in the media. He’s humble, down to earth, friendly, and, married with three kids, is a self-professed “family man”. He also reiterates Bowman’s sentiment about his giving nature by adding, “I love teaching more than fighting”.
When asked about his success in MMA, Lewis is quick to deflect praise away from himself and towards his core training team of Mike Ciesnolevicz, Sandy Bowman, Matt Jelly, and Rodrigo Munduruca. He also credits MFC CEO Mark Pavelich, who he says, “has been giving me support since I was basically a bum”. What was
that we said about being humble?
So what’s in the future for Dwayne and the Lewis Army? “Just keep steaming forward”, Dwayne says. Want to see what all the fuss is about? Popular local amateur Jr. Middleweight Omar Zalvidar will be making his pro debut against Tom Peterson. Peterson is making the crossover from MMA to boxing. He is 6-2 as an MMA fighter.

Reno’s Joshua Turner is set to face Adam Albright in a evenly matched middleweight showdown.
The Rick Reeves vs. Derrick Burnsed fight has been scrapped due to a severe rib cartilage injury sustained by Reeves during training.
