EDMONTON (Feb. 25, 2010)—Super Channel, Canada’s only national pay television network, is proud to air Canadian Sarah Kaufman courtesy of SHOWTIME® as she headlines the STRIKEFORCE Challengers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event tomorrow/Friday, Feb. 26, in an effort to become the first STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight (135 pounds) champion in history.

Kaufman (10-0, 2-0 in STRIKEFORCE), a former dancer turned undefeated MMA fighter, will fight Takayo Hashi (12-1) of Tokyo, Japan in a live HD offering on Super Channel beginning at 11 p.m. ET live from San Jose, Calif. The card also includes two middleweight (185 pounds) matchups – Trevor Prangley (22-5) vs Karl Amoussou (11-2-1), and Luke Rockhold (6-1) vs. Paul Bradley (12-1).

Though gaining respect and popularity, the sport of women’s MMA is still in its infancy. There are many firsts ahead for the athletes competing in the formative years of women’s combat sports. Nevertheless, some women have already made serious strides. One who has worked hard and attained numerous firsts is Victoria, British Columbia, Canada’s Kaufman.

At 17 years of age, Kaufman stumbled upon MMA when a school opened in the building where she was studying dance. She was supposed to meet a friend to check out ZUMA Martial Arts but the friend never showed and Kaufman went in anyway. Initially she enrolled in an aerobic kickboxing class but before long she was taking every class head instructor and BJJ black belt Adam Zugec offered.

Kaufman competed in tournaments to hone her skills and began fighting MMA professionally in 2006. Beginning her “road of women’s MMA firsts” was competing in the first women’s MMA bout held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, when she beat Alexis Davis by TKO at the Ultimate Cage Wars show in April 2007. Her bout at TKO 29 in June ‘07, where she beat Valerie Letourneau with strikes in the second round, was the first women’s bout in the promotion’s history.

Her follow-up fight that year, yet another first, was competing for and winning the first Hardcore Championship Fighting women’s bantamweight (135-pound) title. There she pounded the experienced Ginele Marquez, stopping her with strikes in the second round. Kaufman defended the title five months later, beating down Molly Helsel and scoring her seventh consecutive career victory by KO or TKO.

Kaufman made her STRIKEFORCE debut last May as a late replacement for Kim Couture (1-2, 1-1 in STRIKEFORCE) in a bout with Miesha “Takedown” Tate (8-2, 0-1 in STRIKEFORCE). In the opening round, Kaufman moved forward, landing lefts and rights and stuffing the takedown attempts of Tate to control the opening phase. In turn, Tate dominated the second period after getting an early takedown and controlling Kaufman on the mat for the majority of the round. In the third, Kaufman continued to stuff takedowns and landed a hard right hook midway through round. Kaufman dominated the remainder of the contest, landing strikes standing and on the ground, and took a unanimous decision victory.

Her second STRIKEFORCE bout last June was also her most recent “first.’’ It was the first women’s bout contested under five-minute rounds. In round 1, Shayna Baszler got an early takedown and applied a unique Josh Barnett-inspired choke but Kaufman worked hard, released the pressure and gained top position. Shayna was able to tie her up against the cage and avoid strikes in the clinch to close out the round. In the second, Baszler again worked to control in the clinch but Kaufman found the range with her strikes and began to strike effectively. Using leg kicks and superior in-and-out movement, Kaufman had her way in round 2 and closed the round with a flurry of strikes. The final round opened with Baszler’s frantic attempt to bring Kaufman to the mat. She successfully pulled guard but a follow-up sweep and subsequent kneebar attempt only led to Kaufman getting behind her and back to her feet. Kaufman’s confidence grew as she used distance effectively and flustered Baszler, tagging her at will. In the final 30 seconds, Baszler rolled for a kneebar but Kaufman stayed closed, avoided the submission and took a unanimous decision win to stay unbeaten.

At just 24 years old, Kaufman is 10-0 in a sport where many competitors don’t even have 10 fights under their belt. Now Kaufman prepares for the biggest first of her career; the STRIKEFORCE Women’s 135l-piound title. She must take on a skilled grappler in Hashi. And if successful, the victory will serve as not only yet another in a long line of “firsts” but also as a historic achievement.

Hall of Fame Legend Remembered In New Digital Book

If there’s a credible wrestling Hall of Fame out there, Gordon Solie has been inducted; such groups include World Championship Wrestling (WCW), National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

The “Walter Cronkite of wrestling,” or the “Dean of professional wrestling announcers,” as Solie was known, kept rare photos from his involvement in stock car racing and wrestling.

Now, 200 images from the Gordon Solie Collection are woven through his writings in the new eBook “Gordon Solie…Something Left Behind.” (ISBN 978-0-578-04808-6 (previously Hardback ISBN 0-9763062-290000)

Solie’s daughter, Pam, spoke about publishing the new eBook, “Dad was known for his extensive vocabulary and his ability as a great story teller. Those qualities are evident in his writings. I am pleased by all the compliments I’ve received in regard to Dad’s writings.

ARRON SURVIVES WEIGH-IN SCARE

PRINCE Arron survived a scare at the weigh-in ahead of Friday’s Prizefighter Light-Middleweights tournament.

Arron, 22, originally scaled 1lb 7oz more than the championship weight of 11st 2lb before a quick exercise session saw him make the weight at the second attempt an hour later.

If he had failed to make the weight then he would have lost his place in Barry Hearn’s latest eight-man, one-night tournament where the winner picks up £32,000.

“I thought I’d done the weight, going on the scales at my home,” said a relieved Arron at the weigh-in, held at the Lillywhites sports shop in central London. “I thought it was right but obviously it was wrong so I had to go back to the hotel and get it off.

“It wasn’t a problem but just a mistake and a lesson learnt – I will use proper scales in the future.

“I’ve never had that in my career and it’s not ideal preparation but it was only a pound and a half and I could’ve done it easily. In the end I got three pounds off just to make sure.

“I went back to the hotel room and I was just skipping in my sweat suit.”

This will be the tenth Prizefighter competition and it gives former champions and ambitious prospects the chance for a career-changing night.

Many former Prizefighter winners have gone on to title contests, including Heavyweights 3 champion Audley Harrison, who meets Poland’s Albert Sosnowski on April 9 for the European Championship.

Arron fights betting outsider George Hillyard in the first fight of the night and is confident of defeating Hillyard before winning the tournament.

“I’m 100 per cent here to win the competition. Hillyard is a game, tough boy but the sort of fighter that is made for me and I’m going to box his head off.

“Winning Prizefighter will open doors with hopefully a British eliminator after I win.”

NEW YORK (Feb. 25, 2010)—Showtime Networks and Verizon announced today the launch of the first nationwide, high-definition interactive television application (iTV) using EBIF (Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format), with the new SHOWTIME Sports Interactive. Verizon’s FiOS TV customers will have the first look at the network’s interactive experience – including voting and polling functionality and fighter profiles – during the live Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts telecast, Friday, Feb. 26 (11 p.m. ET). All FiOS TV customers with a high-definition set-top box who subscribe to SHOWTIME will have access to the interactive experience.

Unlike static on-screen stats displayed during traditional televised sporting events, these features are interactive.

Verizon was the first company to deploy a nationwide EBIF iTV application to all of its subscribers. Showtime Networks is the first programmer to launch a high-definition EBIF application and the first to do so with voting and polling functionalities. Allentown, PA (Wednesday, February 24, 2010) – The first taste of adversity for a professional boxer reveals a great deal about the character of the fighter. Heavyweight prospect Travis Kauffman of Reading, PA intends to show that what hasn’t killed him will only make him stronger when he returns to the ring this Saturday, February 27th at the Rodeway Inn & Conference Center in Allentown, PA against Mike Miller of Akron, OH in the six round main event.

King’s Promotions will promote the ten-bout event that will feature both professional and amateur boxing action.

Kauffman, 18-1 (15 KO), will be making his first appearance since his first professional loss to Tony Grano in September. Ahead on the scorecards and trying to finish off his fading opponent, Kauffman was drawn in by his opponent’s dirty tactics and left himself open in the process. After taking some time to deal with the defeat, Kauffman has put the experience into perspective.

“It got me down a little bit at first,” admits Kauffman, “but I feel I’ve won bigger fights than that as an amateur. I fought with my heart instead of my head and that was my biggest mistake in that fight. I got over it in time and am now 100% focused in the gym. I still feel I have the potential to be the heavyweight champion of the world and hold the title. All this has done is strengthen my desire to prove that I am a world class fighter.”

Kauffman, a former number one ranked heavyweight amateur in the country, accrued a number of amateur accolades, including a gold medal in the 2004 PAL Nationals. The 6?3? Kauffman was on an eight-fight knockout streak prior to the defeat but has demonstrated technical boxing skills in addition to power.

Kauffman was originally supposed to face Baltimore, MD’s Bernard Brown but plans changed when Brown suffered from cold feet in the last 24 hours and pulled out of the fight. Stepping in on short notice is the durable Mike Miller, 6-15 (3 KO), who was the first person to extend Kauffman the distance in the pros. Miller has only been knocked out once as a professional, by the aforementioned Grano.

“It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me, I’m ready to fight. I want to show Allentown, the entire Pennsylvania and the world that I’m still on a mission to become heavyweight champion of the world.”
In the co-featured attraction, Jason Cintron of Reading, PA will clash with Maurice Chalmers in junior-welterweight action. Cintron, 11-1, is the brother of former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron. He is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Martinus Clay at Reading’s Sovereign Center in December.

Rounding out the professional action, undefeated super-middleweight Farah Ennis (11-0, 5 KO) of Philadelphia will face Emmanuel Gonzalez of San Juan, Puerto Rico in a six round bout. Featherweight Coy Evans (6-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia, PA will face Robert DaLuz of Providence, Rhode Island in a six round bout. Middleweight Derrick Webster of Glassboro, NJ will face Pete Guthy of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in a four round bout. New York super-featherweight Emanuel Gonzalez will face Jamar Saunders of Atlanta, GA in a four round bout.

Bragging rights will be at stake in the amateur portion of the night when fighters from the Allentown Boxing Club challenge their counterparts from Reading’s King’s Gym.
