Throwback fighter Chris Henry takes on Hugo Hernan Garay

(Feb. 10, 2010) – Light heavyweight contender Chris “Hard Hittin’” Henry hopes to parlay his explosive win by sixth-round technical knockout of Shaun George, last July on ESPN, into a February 27 upset of former WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Hernan “Pigu” Garay for the WBA Interim title.
Garay-Henry is the main event, live from El Polyforim Benito Juarez in Cancun, Mexico, in one of two world championship shows on “The Double Assault” pay-per-view event, presented by KO Entertainment in Mexico and PR Best Boxing Promotions in Puerto Rico, in association with All Star Boxing and Sampson Boxing LLC.
The unique broadcast is being distributed in the United States and Canada by Integrated Sports for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, TVN, DISH Network, Viewer’s Choice and Shaw PPV for a suggested retail price of only $34.95.
WBA No. 4-ranked Henry, fighting out of Houston, has been the NABF, NABA, IBA Inter-Continental and USNBC light heavyweight champion during the past four years. “This is a big step-up for me,” Henry said from his Texas training camp. “Everybody has looked at me as a stepping stone to get to bigger guys, but I am one of the best light heavyweights, and I’ve worked hard to get where I’m supposed to be. I’m a throwback fighter who goes all out. Garay may not be a great puncher but he’s a 2-time world champ. He throws a lot of fast punches and I’m a big hitter. Pay-per-view fans are going to watch a great fight. I’m looking for a big W.”
Garay (32-4, 17 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBA, is a popular Argentinean who defeated Yuri Barashian by decision for the WBA light heavyweight title in 2008, successfully defended against present WBO Interim champion Juergen Braehmer by decision, and then lost his belt by decision last June to Gabriel Campillo. Garay and Henry fought each other in the 1997 World Under-19 Tournament.
“We were just amateurs but I saw the politics of boxing even back then,” Henry noted. “I thought I did more and should have won; we fought in his hometown. We were kids then and now we’ve grown into men.”
Former WBA & WBC super flyweight title-holder Cristian Mijares, No. 5 by the WBA and No. 14 by the IBF, drops back down to his natural weight class against an opponent to be determined. Revered Mexican boxer Mijares was considered one of the world’s top pound-for-pound boxers after winning a decision against Alexander Munoz in their 2008 WBC/WBA super flyweight unification match.

CONCEPCION SEEKS PRYCE REVENGE IN PRIZEFIGHTER

MARTIN Concepcion wants to avenge the ‘worst moment of his career’ by knocking out Bradley Pryce in the Prizefighter Light-Middleweight final.
Concepcion and Pryce are two of the eight contenders in Barry Hearn’s next Prizefighter, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on February 26.
The pair have history as Pryce stopped Concepcion in the third round of their clash for the Commonwealth Championship in October 2007.
But Concepcion, who defeated Kevin Hammond last week to claim the Midlands Area title and the last Prizefighter spot, is hungry for revenge.
“I’ve got a score to settle with Bradley Pryce and I want a rematch,” said 28-year-old Concepcion.
“Losing to him was the worst moment of my career without a doubt. It was a devastating loss but one I’m eager to fix.
“I’d just come off a massive win against Matthew Hall and the opportunity came up for the Commonwealth fight. I felt at the time that I was ready but looking back, I wasn’t.
“It would be nice to meet him in the final and I definitely owe him one.
“Matthew Hall (who later beat Pryce) got to him and gave him no respect but I gave him respect. I didn’t expect to knock him out, although I have the ability to do so.”
Concepcion’s career started in explosive fashion with 11 wins, including eight victories coming inside the first three rounds.
However, his first professional loss, which came a day after a relative had died, saw a downturn in form with six defeats in eight contests over a four-year period.
But now Leicester-based Concepcion has rediscovered his love for the sport after contemplating hanging up his gloves.
“I’ve taken problems out of the ring into it,” admitted Concepcion. “In the early days I was beating a lot of people and knocking them out but then I got caught by a punch and didn’t want to know. I lost the will to fight and had gone a bit stale.
“I had lots of hurdles to overcome and was very close to losing interest in the boxing game but now the passion has been reignited.
“I have three kids and I want them to be proud of their dad. I’ve had to come back from setbacks but that shows a lot about someone’s character.
“I’ve been in there with a couple of the lads in Prizefighter and this is like I’m having another opportunity to get my career back on track.
“Everyone that has come out of Prizefighter has gone on to bigger and better things so this can reignite my career.
“Despite everything that’s happened in my career, if I could change anything, I wouldn’t as it has made me the fighter that I am and made me more determined and focused.
“It would now mean more to me to be where I want to be – British Champion, Commonwealth Champion and winning Prizefighter.”

World Championship Fighting today announced that former Olympian and undefeated MMA fighter Rick Hawn is scheduled to fight New Jersey native Tom Gallicchio in the Co-Main event of WCF 9, which takes place Friday, February 26 2010 from the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, MA. Hawn is a four time national champion in Judo, and finished in the top 10 at the 2004 Olympics. He trains under both Jimmy Pedro and Mark Dellagrotte, and has started his MMA career at a blistering pace, going 5-0 is less than a year. Gallicchio has won 7 out of his last 8 fights, and has the majority of his wins by submission. He represents a step up in competition for Hawn, and the crowd is sure to love this one.
Also added to WCF 9 is a classic striker vs. grappler match up between fan favorite Jamie Campbell and Colin Schrader. Both fighters are undefeated, and both intend to keep it that way on February 26. Campbell was last in action at WCF 3 when he knocked out Jose Valentin in the first round. Schrader makes his much anticipated WCF debut, but has won his 2 pro fights by submission.
As previously announced, the card is headlined by Mike “The Beast” Campbell vs. Marc Stevens. WEC Veteran Mike Campbell is fresh off a win at WCF 8, and is 7-2 overall with 2 first round TKO wins for World Championship Fighting. Campbell is moving down to his optimal fight weight of 155 pounds to take on his toughest opponent to date at 155. Stevens is a dominant wrestler with fantastic ground and pound, and was 4-0 in 2009 (12-4 overall) with big wins over Hitalo Machado and “Mr. Big” Al Buck. Stevens is currently ranked #2 in New England at 155 lbs. and he looks to continue his rise to the top on February 26, but standing in his way is “The Beast.”

BRUCE LEE’S CLOSE FRIEND WILLIAM CHEUNG SPECIAL GUEST AT SENI 2010
Bruce Lee’s close friend, teacher, training partner and Grandmaster of Wing Chun William Cheung will be attending Seni Show where he will be doing a Q&A and conducting a Wing Chun seminar. Grandmaster William Cheung, direct descendent of the famed Wing Chun master Yip Man, was one of Bruce Lee’s best friends. In 1951, at the age of ten, Cheung started training in the Wing Chun system under the late Grandmaster Yip man. In early 1954 Cheung introduced his childhood friend and companion Bruce Lee to Grandmaster Yip Man. Throughout the four and half years Cheung and Lee cultivated a very close friendship, with both men training and socialising together. Cheung passed onto Bruce Lee many techniques and has been credited as Lee’s teacher in the early years of his formal martial arts training in Hong Kong. The Little Dragon spent countless h! ours learning from Cheung in addition to the guidance of Yip Man. Bruce considered Cheung to be the “ultimate fighter” at a time when street gangs were rife in Hong Kong and matters were often settled with fists and kicks. Bruce Lee worked with, taught, and crossed paths with many people during his life time. Some barely spent quality time with the Little Dragon, other’s knew him to a certain extent. or trained with him to a degree. Then there are those who developed a special bond and were close friends of the late icon. William Cheung is no doubt one of the elite people who rightly fits into this category, and his insights into his friendship with Bruce Lee are unique and intriguing. COY EVANS TO RETURN ON FEBRUARY 27TH IN ALLENTOWN, PA

PHILADELPHIA (February 9, 2010)— on the heels of his first career knockout, Undefeated Featherweight prospect, Coy Evans returns to the ring on Saturday night February 27th at the Roadway Inn in Allentown, PA when he takes on tough veteran Robert DaLuz in a bout scheduled for six rounds.
Evans of Philadelphia has a record of 6-0-1 with one stoppage and is coming off a scintillating knockout over Vineash Rungea on January 15th at The Arena in Philadelphia.
Evans has been making noise in the Philadelphia fight scene with his previous performances and the twenty-five year old has been coming into his own and with a win on February 27th he will be looking rapidly step up his competition for the balance of 2010.
“Coy has been coming along nicely and we expect huge things from this year”, said Greg Robinson of Power Productions who promotes Evans.
“We are excited to keep Coy back in the ring and we expect him to be very busy in 2010 and we are very happy to have a promotional company behind us that will keep Coy active”, said Evans co-manager Moz Gonzalez.
DaLuz of Providence, Rhode Island is a veteran of thirty-nine professional fights and has been in the ring with many of the top featherweight prospects in the world such as former U.S Olympian Clarence Vinson, Cornelius Lock, Gary Stark Jr., Teon Kennedy, Eric Hunter, Robert Marroquin and Chris Avalos to name a few so this bout with be a test to see where Evans stands in terms of his progress.

With a win, Evans could see his first headlining appearance as he is tentatively scheduled to participate in an eight round main event on April 9th at The Arena in Philadelphia.

MATT SERRA DOES A XYIENCE 180

Matt Serra is back with Xyience in a big way. In case you didn’t know, he made it perfectly clear by donning a Xyience hat upon striding up to the microphone after his big UFC win against Frank Trigg at UFC 109 this past Saturday. I admit I must have overlooked Serra’s signing a new contract with the company in May, 2009.

According to Wikipedia, Serra first got involved with the Xyience brand after winning the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter: “His win earned him a guaranteed title shot against Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship,[4] as well as a $100,000 contract and $100,000 sponsorship with Xyience.”
Serra was wrapped up in the scandal that led to Xyience’s bankruptcy and the Fertitta Enterprises takeover, and his contract remained unpaid for a considerable amount of time before a settlement was reached. As part of the bankruptcy, complaints actually had to be filed by the trustee’s office against some sponsored fighters Xyience (while owned by the Fertittas) settled with post-bankruptcy. Other creditors were technically supposed to be ahead of the fighters in line, though I doubt many would say it to their faces :), and seeing Serra back with the brand after enduring that debacle is very surprising.
It appears there may be a reason for Serra’s incredible return. Actually there may be thousands of reasons. Beyond whatever Serra is getting paid to hawk the brand for Xyience, it appears there also may be some extra financial benefits of playing ball with the Fertittas and helping the brand recover its tainted image. Coming off a disappointing loss and facing a guy who is washed up at best, there is no reason Matt Serra should have made almost as much as “Captain America” Randy Couture’s main event performance earned him. Yet, that’s exactly what happened. Serra’s $210,000 included a whopping $135,000 in bonus consideration.
I have been told by multiple witnesses familiar with Xyience and the UFC’s past relationship that Xyience sponsored fighters would always tend to make more money per fight than those not sponsored by the company. The symbiotic relationship Xyience and the UFC had in the early days was very healthy. Both sides benefited tremendously from their association with each other. The branding of the best fighters in the company with Xyience sponsorships eventually resulted in a marriage that could not be easily dissolved. To this day many images of the league’s best fighters feature Xyience logos displayed prominently in the picture. Rather than part ways and intensify the scandal, UFC brass devised an even more surreptitious plan for Xyience. They swept things under the rug and hoped nobody would notice by using Fertitta Enterprises to take over and then bankrupt the brand to start over.
The Fertittas are so far into this fiasco that they are now making it obvious, probably thinking they could never get caught. Not only did they pay Matt Serrra an obscene amount of bonus money, but they are also giving away Harley Davidson motorcycles now through a Xyience co-promotion. These are all conflict of interest and insider dealing games most businesses don’t get away with when it’s so obvious.
Matt Serra is not a stupid guy. He’s definitely not wrapped up with Xyience for the free supplements and energy drinks. He’d at least be a bit more vocal about his favorite products if the partnership was based on the company’s actual offerings. I’ve yet to see any evidence that he swears by any particular product Xyience makes. It seems pretty obvious the UFC brass probably made Serra a sweetheart deal to come back and start repairing some of the PR damage done to the brand over the years. I just wonder if Serra knows he’s being used as a pawn for the Fertittas to prove to the world that the brand is back on its feet and all is forgiven.
On the contrary, the fight over Xyience is about to get even more contentious, and in the next few weeks the story will grow even wider. The entire direction of my own litigation against Xyience will be revolutionized soon, and a new phase of the case will begin. When the final details are hammered out, you’ll read it here first.
