PHILADELPHIA (JANUARY 25, 2010)–When Coy Evans went to a nearby gym in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, he was looking for a hobby. Nearly ten years later that hobby has turned serious and Evans looks to be the next in the long line of potential world champions from the “City of Brotherly Love”

Evans went to the gym at age sixteen where he was looking for a hobby. One thing led to another and Evans started his amateur career.

Evans had an outstanding record of 42-3 and won Philadelphia Novice Golden Glove tournaments between 2001-2004 and Evans decided to turn professional.

Coy Evans has established himself as one of the top prospects in boxing talent rich Philadelphia. The Featherweight turned pro on October 22nd, 2004 with a four round majority decision over Edward Valdez at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Evans then sat on the sidelines for four years as other fighters continued to get opportunities.

“It was hard to get fights with no management behind me”, said Evans.

“I quit a couple of times out of frustration but I am not a quitter so I knew if I stuck it out good things would start to happen”

Evans then hooked up with E & M management team consist ting of Eddie Woods and Moz Gonzalez.

The management duo have been managing fighters for the better part of two decades and almost instantly young Evans started getting fights.

The first fight after the hiatus, he came back to score a four round unanimous decision over Elias Castillo .

In that fight, Evans had some ring rust and showed his inexperience but was able to push through for the victory.

After a disputed draw with Jason Rorie, Evans began to regained focus and started a run of four straight wins that was culminated by a second round stoppage over the durable Vineash Rungea on January 15th, 2009 at The Arena in Philadelphia

“I knew I had power. I wasn’t sitting down on my punches and combined with my hand speed I believe that more knockouts will start to come”

Evans has quickly developed two reputations. first being that he may have the fastest hands in Philadelphia and the other being that he has become a man that nobody wants to fight.

Gonzalez agrees with his fighter.

Evans works as an assistant to an attorney in Center City Philadelphia. He has a six year old daughter and just recently, Evans inked his first endorsement deal as he is now is sponsored by Unleashed Beverage Company and is also promoted by Greg Robinson’s Power Productions.

Nathan Gunn had everything going for him in his MFC debut – that is until things went horribly wrong.

The welterweight prospect had a solid first round in his first fight under the spotlight, well enough to earn him the nod for taking the opening five minutes against veteran Pete Spratt on the MFC 22: Payoff card. But Gunn made a fateful error along the way. When he had Spratt in trouble, he failed to put the hammer down and finish the fight.

Instead, Gunn let Spratt off the hook and paid for it dearly. The heavy-handed Spratt blasted Gunn face-first to the canvas in Round 2, scoring the win, the Knockout of the Night, and the MFC’s 2009 Knockout of the Year.

Gunn (7-1) will try to regain his footing as an up-and-comer at MFC 24: Heat XC when he meets Thiago Goncalves (11-3) on Friday, February 26 at the River Cree Resort and Casino.

“I felt a fought a smart, good fight against a great striker … I just let it slip away and did not attack and go for the finish when I had my opportunities,” reflected Gunn. “When you are fighting someone with the firepower of Pete Spratt, well, you see all it takes is one punch no matter how much of the fight you control.”

It wasn’t a pleasant experience for Gunn, but one that he takes away a valuable lesson from.

“The biggest thing I took from the Spratt fight is not to hold back. You don’t get a second chance when you have your opportunity to finish,” said the Thunder Bay, Ontario, product.

“That along with experiencing my first KO and loss, I have nothing to lose from now on. I am going to go for broke and let things fly and see how it all plays out. As far as I’m concerned I am either walk out with a win or Thiago is going to have to do the same thing that Spratt did and that’s finish the fight in spectacular fashion and have me waking up looking at the ceiling again.

“One thing I can promise is I am going to be a ball of energy and go in there looking to have fun and to put on a good show for everyone.”

While being on the wrong end of the Knockout of the Year was a black mark on Gunn’s resume, he expects to rebound from the loss and take advantage of the situation presented to him – an opportunity in front of another sold-out MFC audience to showcase his skills. Gunn has accurately assessed his best chance of winning by approaching the fight with a frenetic pace. If he’s going to catch Goncalves, it’s likely to be early and in the stand-up before the Brazilian jiu-jitsu talents have a chance to go to work.

“He’s been training with the best in the world his whole life,” noted Gunn. “It is an honor to once again be put in a position to test myself against someone with his background and abilities. I have never seen him fight and don’t know much about him besides what I have heard about his ground skills and that he’s a big 170-pounder with power.”

While Goncalves remains a bit of a mystery, Gunn is hopeful that he can rely on some past success in his upcoming battle. Gunn previously beat Tyler Jackson, one of Goncalves’s training partners, in early 2009 so going two-for-two against teammates would make for a great start to 2010.

“I’m pressing hard with my cardio and expecting to come into this fight in tremendous shape, allowing me to be able to push the pace and not hold back any offense like I did in the Spratt fight,” said Gunn. “You will definitely see me looking for offense from any position I might find myself in. I’m grateful the MFC has given me a chance to come back and put on a show for the crowd again and I am not going to disappoint – that’s for sure.”

Lundy wins split decision in Boston

BOSTON (Jan. 22, 2010) – Hot lightweight prospect “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy brought a touch of his Philadelphia fighting to Boston last night, defeating former Cuban amateur standout Richard “El Tigre” Abril by a 10-round split decision, in the “Boston Pop” main event at The Roxy.

Lundy (17-0-1, 10 KOs) remained unbeaten, even though he suffered a knockdown in the midway through the fight, that appeared to be more of a slip causing his glove to briefly hit the canvas. The judges scored 98-91 and 96-94 in favor of Lundy, 95-94 for Abril (12-2-1, 6 KOs).

“He didn’t frustrate me but he kept moving around,” Lundy said after the fight. “Once he felt my power he ran. I clearly beat him. He didn’t do noting but hold. That was a slip, not a knockdown. He can’t punch.”

In the co-feature, power-punching Eddie “Thunder” Caminero lived up to his nickname, stopping Chris Traietti in the second round, after flooring him in the first and later hurting him with a right hand before referee Bob Benoit halted the action.

In his first scheduled 6-rounder, popular lightweight Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczewski kept his perfect pro record (7-0) intact, despite being floored, and took a unanimous decision from Francisco Palacios.

Junior welterweight Simeon “Dynamite” Dunwell improved his record to 11-1 with a 6-round decision versus Josh “Bam Bam” Beeman in an action-packed bout.

Boston super middleweight Maceo Crowder won a unanimous 4-round decision against pro debuting Greg McCoy.

Brandon Gonzales Looks to Remain “Flawless”

Reno — Undefeated middleweight prospect Brandon “Flawless” Gonzales 9-0, 8 KOs will fight to keep his unblemished status on January 29th. Gonzales will be facing ring veteran Dumont “Dewey” Welliver in a six round bout under the highly anticipated super-middleweight IBF eliminator bout between Jesse Brinkley and Curtis “Showtime” Stevens at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV.

Gonzales performed in spectacular fashion in his last fight by stopping the durable Victor Villereal in four rounds. Previous to that, Villereal had never been stopped in his career, even after being in the ring with fighters such as Marcus Johnson.

Dumont “Dewey” Welliver promises to be Gonzales’ toughest test yet. Welliver, a decorated amateur, is only 27 years old, but already has 39 professional fights under his belt. The Spokane, WA native is no stranger to big fights. He’s fought several big names including Daniel Edouarud, Livingstone Bramble, and Anthony Thompson. Welliver has also proven to be very durable. His record stands at 18-19-1 with only five of his defeats coming by way of KO or TKO.

“I’m looking forward to doing battle against such an experienced fighter.” Says Gonzales. “All but one of my wins have come by KO or TKO, and I’m going to show that I can do damage to the best fighters out there come January 29th.”

In his last fight on December 11th, Gonzales proved that he is growing his fan base throughout the region. He is from Sacramento, CA, only two-hours away from Reno. Under snowy conditions, Gonzales still drew about 100 of his fans from Central California while making a slew of new ones in Reno.

Jesse Brinkley – From TV ‘Contender’ to Top-ten Contender

Reno — On January 29th Jesse Brinkley (34-5, 22 KOs) will be in the national spotlight once again as he faces off against Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (21-2, 15 KOs) on ESPN II’s “Friday Night Fights”. The fight is for the IBF. #2 contender spot. The WBC-USNBC super-middleweight title, currently held by Brinkley, will also be on the line.

Like most athletes, the 33 year old Brinkley has experienced peaks and valleys throughout his career. As a promising young fighter, Brinkley was selected to be a part of the first season of ‘The Contender’ on NBC. He was known for his big personality and big punch. Under less than ideal circumstances, Brinkley became a semifinalist within that competition. In the time after ‘The Contender’, he had a few poor performances in the ring and was considering retirement. But that was not the end of the road.

In 2007, Jesse made the decision to work with trainer Peter Manfredo Sr. on a permanent basis. The bout will take place at the Grand Theatre inside the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. Doors open at 6PM with the first bout scheduled for 7PM.
