ROBBIE LAWLER VS. MELVIN MANHOEF, JOE RIGGS VS. JAY HIERON SET FOR STRIKEFORCE: MIAMI JAN. 30

NEW YORK (January 6, 2009)– Knockout artists “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (16-5) and Melvin “No Mercy” Manhoef (24-6-1) will square off with each other in a middleweight (185 pounds) contest at the STRIKEFORCE: Miami mixed martial arts (MMA) event at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday, January 30. Wrestling powerhouses Joe “Diesel” Riggs (32-10) and Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (18-4) will face off at welterweight (170 pounds).

The 27-year-old Lawler, one of MMA’s most explosive punchers, will attempt to rebound from the first round (2:02) submission (guillotine choke) he suffered at the hands of Jake Shields in the main event the first-ever STRIKEFORCE fight card in St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

One fight prior to the meeting with Shields, Lawler, who hails from Granite City, Illinois, thrilled millions of fans when he unleashed his wrath on Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith in the main event of the live, CBS primetime televised event held in Stockton, California on July 26, 2008.

Born in San Diego, California, Lawler relocated with his family to Bettendorf, Iowa where, at the age of 16, he became a protégé of MMA legend Pat Miletich. Just three years later, Lawler exploded onto the MMA scene, emerging victorious in his first seven starts.

Lawler’s second round KO of Steve Berger at UFC 37.5 on June 22, 2002 made history when it became the first MMA fight ever to air on cable television during an episode of Fox Sports Net’s The Best Damn Sports Show, Period.

A seven-time veteran of UFC action, Lawler also made a splash in the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships when he scored a crushing knockout on Joey Villasenor with a flying knee a mere 22 seconds into their matchup at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Thomas and Mack Center on October 21, 2006.

Manhoef, one of STRIKEFORCE’s newest signees who hails from Amsterdam, Netherlands, notched his latest conquest just days ago at the annual New Year’s Eve K-1 “Dynamite!” event in Japan when he scored a first round (1:49) TKO on former top 10 ranked Kazuo Misaki with a barrage of punches.

His arrival in STRIKEFORCE comes after Manhoef reached the semifinal round of the 2008 DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix tournament by scoring first round TKOs on Dae Won Kim and legendary champion Kazushi Sakuraba on May 11, 2008 and June 15, 2008 respectfully.

His well-known battle cry “When I fight, I am willing to die” has translated into Manhoef’s explosive style of fighting, one that has helped him earn 22 of his 30 career MMA wins and 27 of his 45 career kickboxing victories by way of knockout.

Manhoef’s tenure in K-1, the world’s premiere stand-up fighting league, dates back to February 24, 2002. During his tenure with the Japanese promotion, he has triumphed over the likes of former K-1 tournament champions Stefan Leko and Ruslan Karaev, whom Manhoef crushed with a left hook only 31 seconds into their meeting in Amsterdam on June 23, 2007.

Riggs, a 27 year old native of Phoenix, Arizona, will attempt to extend a four fight win streak that began with his second round (2:05) TKO of Luke Stewart in a STRIKEFORCE: Destruction bout at HP Pavilion in San Jose, California on November 21, 2008.

In his last effort under the STRIKEFORCE banner, Riggs dominated hard-hitting “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni for three consecutive rounds of action before walking away with a unanimous judges’ decision victory at St. Louis’ Scottrade Center on June 6, 2009.

Hieron, a former nationally ranked NCAA wrestler for Hofstra University, has been victorious in each of his last six starts. The Long Island, New York native made his STRIKEFORCE debut in his last effort, earning a unanimous decision win over Jesse “J.T. Money” Taylor at HP Pavilion on August 15, 2009.

A former troubled teen, Hieron has since become an inspiration, winning a world title with the now defunct International Fight League (IFL) and relocating to Las Vegas in order to train with the fight squad headed by MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture.

In the main event, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Nick Diaz (20-7) of Stockton, California will take on fellow superstar and DREAM welterweight (170 pounds) champion Marius “The Whitemare” Zaromskis (13-3) of Siaulial, Lithuania at welterweight.

STRIKEFORCE Women’s World Lightweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg (8-1) of Curitiba, Brazil will put her title on the line against Marloes Coenen (17-3) of Deventer, Holland.

Football legend Herschel Walker (0-0) will make his highly-anticipated MMA debut against an opponent that has yet to be determined. Undefeated heavyweight and former WWE champion Bobby Lashley (4-0) will make his STRIKEFORCE debut during the event.

Doors at BankAtlantic Center will open for the event at 6:30 p.m. The first non-televised, preliminary bout will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The live SHOWTIME telecast of STRIKEFORCE: Miami will begin at 10 pm ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) and will include as many as five bouts.

STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network. The promotion made its live, primetime debut on CBS with the “Fedor vs. Rogers” mega-fight that it co-promoted with M-1 Global on Saturday, November 7

and generated 5.46 million viewers for the main event between the world’s number one heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, and superstar Brett “The Grim” Rogers.

FightZone TV Enters Fourth Year Of Broadcasting With Over 100 Hours Of National MMA Programming

When FightZone TV began airing MMA events in 2006, they began with a modest four shows per month on FSN Affiliate Sun Sports, wired into 6 million plus Florida Homes and 4 million national subscribers on DIRECTV and The Dish Network.

There were four original Promoter Partners: Real Fighting Championships (RFC), Mainstream MMA, Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) and Combat Fighting Championships (CFC). Now there are sixteen with new leagues and events being added monthly.

Starting their fourth year of broadcasting, FightZone TV will air 112 hours of MMA content in January to over 25 million homes on Sun Sports, Sport South, DIRECTV, The Dish Network and ATT U-verse and be available to over 65% of the homes in America with cable TV. Look for FightZone TV to even increase their distribution coverage in 2010 both on more cable networks and on various websites making their content available on demand and to video capable phones.

The Machine, John Lober stepped out of retirement to face Lee “Dragon” Mc Kibbin and was out to put the young Dragon in his place. Colin “The Gift” McKee was intent on increasing his six fight winning streak by facing down undefeated Brazilian Ju Jitsu black belt Neydson Santos Ferrara from Spain. Nightmare features a host of International and European talent in a non stop action packed event that was so big it had to be split in half with Part 2 airing in February.

Also debuting will be FightZone’s newest Promoter Partner, Unconquered Martial Arts’ “November Reign,” held at the BankUnited Center located on the University of Miami’s campus. This event saw fighters leaving it all in the cage with the judge’s scorecards only being read once. The action packed event was called by Jay Adams, Jen Boronico and Din Thomas cageside.

The card featured two female fights with Amanda Duval from Animal House taking on the tough ATT fighter Jessica Aguilar and the televised bout of Michelle Gutierrez and Fight Girls’ Felice Herrig, a Muay Thai Champion.

Other featured bouts included Jen Boronico’s pick for Fight Of The Night, Allan Arzeno vs. Patrick Mikesz in a crowd pleaser ending with a standing ovation.

Another fight that had the crowd on their feet was the Miami street fighting legend Rene Martinez vs Charlie Champion.

In other action, The Miami Hometown Hero, Luis “Baboon” Palomino took on Rafael Dias and ATT’s eighteen-year-old prodigy, Yuri Villefort against Joshua Lee.

This truly International card, which saw fighters from the US, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Venezuela and Czech Republic among others, set the stage for many more Unconquered events to come.

And, of course, FightZone TV will be there to bring you all the action.

Rounding out FightZone TV’s January’s debuts is X1’s “Legends” from Hawaii. This event features some of the most know and loved Hawaii fighters over the past years, plus some newcomers trying to become fan favorites on their way to future legends. Bouts include two fighters, who according to Russell Shimooka, a legendary commentator himself, were not legends coming into this fight but will soon be after this explosive TV coverage. Welterweight Champion, Chad Reiner and Brandon Wolff, after having a five, 5 minute war of non stop action, will certainly be local legends after these airings. Cuban boxing prospect Alexei Acosta heading to U.S.

CORK, Ireland (Jan. 5, 2010) – Unbeaten Cuban bantamweight Alexei “The Hurricane” Acosta, now fighting out of Ireland, will cross the Atlantic Ocean later this month to prepare for his United States pro debut in 2010.

The 21-year-old Acosta defected from Cuba in 2008 and signed a managerial contract with Cork, Ireland-based Gary Hyde, president of Nowhere To Hyde Promotions.

The thrilling, power-punching Acosta made his pro debut September 13, 2008, knocking out Krastan Krastanov in the second round of their fight in Cork. Fighting exclusively as a pro in Ireland and Great Britain, Acosta has stopped all nine of his opponents, the last this past November, via a second-round stoppage of Sean Hughes (15-9-1) on Belfast.

“I’ve always dreamed of becoming world champion as a professional,” 2006 Junior World champion Acosta explained in fluent English, “but that that was never going to be possible if I stayed in my native Cuba. The hardest thing for me was leaving my family behind in Cuba, especially my son, Michel. My dream is going to become a reality soon, when I go the United States and win the world title in six or seven more fights.”

Hyde has been involved in talks with some leading boxing promoters interested in signing his top fighter, 2-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (4-0, 3 KOs), the multi-talented bantamweight who had an incredible 243-4 amateur record.

“They have all also expressed interest in signing Acosta,” Hyde noted. “I hope to have Alexei fighting alongside Guillermo because this will give him the best possible platform to shine. Alexei is very excited about fighting on the important U.S. circuit. Belfast’s Tony Dunlop coaches Alexei, who has punching power in both hands and hasn’t been extended more than three rounds in any of his nine pro fights.”

Hyde also manages two other Cuban boxers, heavyweight Mike “The Rebel” Perez (8-0, 6 KOs), winner of the World Junior Championships; and super middleweight Luis “El Leon” Garcia (5-0, 4 KOs), 2006 World Junior Championships winner, in addition to Irish super middleweight brothers J.J. “Slick” (2-0, 2 KOs) and Paddy McDonagh (2-0).

“My original plan was to bring my Cuban fighters to Ireland and, after they built-up respectable records, send them to the U.S. to win major titles. I picked three of the brightest young stars on the Cuban National Team, but I also needed one of the most decorated amateurs ever to go pro, ‘Rigo,’ as my key for fighting them all in the U.S. My plan was sidetracked for a while due to the Rigondeaux situation (Hyde recently won a legal judgment in Miami that validated his managerial contract with Rigondeaux). I am now putting it all back together with Acosta joining Rigondeaux (living in Los Angeles) in the U.S. I will be spending a lot more time in the United States, developing my team in 2010, and they should all be ready for global dominance by the end of this year.”

All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.
