JONES HOPING FAMILY PRIDE CAN TAKE HIM TO PRIZEFIGHTER GLORY

BARRIE Jones has an added incentive to win Friday’s Prizefighter Light-Welterweights – family pride.

Jones, 24, stepped into the Prizefighter line-up as a short-notice replacement after Barry Morrison had to withdraw due to illness.

Three of the eight contenders – Jones, Gavin Rees and Jason Cook – are Welsh and Jones would love to fight Rees, a former WBA World Champion, in the final.

“I’ve known Gavin and Jason for years and always watched them and respected them,” said Jones. “They’re good boys, have fought at a very high level and will be a tough fight for anyone.

“If you see someone like Gavin win a world title then you think you can do it as well. I won just as much as him in my amateur career and early on as a professional I was undefeated for a long time so it shows you can achieve anything.

“I never fought Gavin as an amateur but my brother Robert did. He lost to Gavin a couple of times but there wasn’t much in it.

“It was a long time ago but it would be nice to get one over Gavin so I can tease my brother.

“But I have to concentrate fully on my first fight and I can’t look past Young Muttley.

“Any fight is going to be hard but I know if I box to my ability then I can win Prizefighter quite comfortably but I have to turn up.”

Jones won his first 15 professional bouts but then suffered three successive defeats, including a loss against Kell Brook with the British Welterweight Championship on the line.

No Welsh fighter has ever won a Prizefighter contest with Darren Morgan (heavyweights one and two), Paul Samuels (middleweights), Shon Davies (light-heavyweights) and Scott Gammer (heavyweights 3) all failing at the quarter-final phase.

However, Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn believes that run will come to an end on Friday. He said: “This is Wales’ big chance to make a big noise in Prizefighter Light-Welterweights.

“With three Welsh fighters in the line-up, I would be astonished if at least one of them is not in the final and I wouldn’t be surprised if a Welshman wins it.

“We haven’t had a Welshman in the final before so national pride is at stake. One thing Gavin Rees, Jason Cook and Barrie Jones all have in common is they all have the heart and desire for a fight.”

Prizefighter Light-Welterweights takes place at London’s Olympia on Friday and tickets are still available. FIGHT WILL NOT BE SEEN IN THE UNITED STATES OR AUSTRALIA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 30, 2009)—This Wednesday, Roy Jones Jr., one of the legends of boxing looks to win the IBO Cruiserweight title as he travels to Sydney, Australia to face the popular Aussie, Danny Green.

The action will take place at the Acer Arena in Sydney and the fight card will feature a big five fight undercard and will be broadcasted live on www.gofightlive.tv around the world beginning at 6pm local time in Sydney. (Sydney is sixteen hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the United States).

For Jones it is a chance to show the fans down under firsthand what the American fans have seen for twenty-one years and that is that he is one of the most electrifying fighters ever to grace the sport.

Jones is coming of a scintillating destruction over former Super Middleweight champion, Jeff Lacy.

Jones of Pensacola, Florida exploded on the scene at 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Jones did not win the Gold medal due to some controversial scoring but was named the outstanding Boxer for the Games.

Jones then went on to win the Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light heavyweight and Heavyweight championship of the world and for the better part of a decade was considered, Pound for Pound the best boxer in the world.

Jones has a record of 54-5 with forty knockouts.

Should Jones reign victorious he would then set the stage a rematch with Bernard Hopkins, who fights Enrique Ornelas later that night in Philadelphia, in what is one of the most anticipated rematches in recent memory as Jones holds a unanimous decision victory over Hopkins in 1993

Green will be looking to thrill the hometown fans as he has a chance to make history by defeating the legendary Jones.

Green, 27-3 with twenty-four knockouts has very impressive credentials as he turned pro in 2001 and over the next two years knocked out the first sixteen opponents before challenging Markus Beyer for the WBC Super Middleweight title.

In that bout, Green dropped Beyer two times before being disqualified for head butts in a controversial finish. Three more wins later set up a rematch with Beyer and despite suffering a twelfth round knockdown, Beyer escaped with a twelve round split decision in yet another controversial bout.

In 2006, Green challenged former WBA Super Middleweight champion, fellow Aussie Anthony Mundine in what was one of the biggest bouts in the history of Australia. Green lost a very close unanimous decision.

Since then, Green has gone 6-0 with five knockouts which includes a fifth round pounding of Julio Cesar Dominguez on the Jones – Lacy undercard to set up this huge international event.

Fans will also be treated to a full five fight undercard which will feature former WBA Featherweight champion, Derrick Gianer (41-7-1, 24 KO’s) taking on Steve Willis (12-0-2, 6 KO’s); Verquan Kimbrough (21-2-3, 7 KO’s) against Will Tomlinson (9-0-1, 9 KO’s) in a Jr./ Welterweight bout; Tui Levin (9-2, 6 KO’s) battling Ryan Walters in a Jr. Middleweight bout; Rayco Saunders (16-12-2, 7 KO’s) against Walter Pupu’a (11-4, 8 KO’s); Rey Anton Olante (8-12-2) takes on Sedat Tasci (5-1-2, 2 KO’s) in Lightweight bout.

Chambers has been coming along very nicely as he unbeaten in his last seventeen (16-0, 1 NC) bouts. Chambers is starting to make his own name as he fought side by side with his brother, and number-one ranked heavyweight in the world, “Fast” Eddie Chambers.

Chambers, 20-1-1 with six knockouts knew this time would be coming where he would be on top of the bill.

“I’m excited for this moment”, said Chambers

“I never intended to be in Eddie’s shadow the whole time. I compare this situation to Roy Jones and Derrick Gainer where Derrick would be on Roy’s cards and eventually branched out and won a world title for himself”

When asked if there is any pressure, being that Eddie has accomplished so much, Steve is eager to equal or better those accolades.

“I like the pressure. It means that I am approaching on being somebody. If there is no pressure it means that nobody cares.”

“I am so blessed to be alongside Eddie. If not for him, I know it would have been harder to get noticed. For the longest time he was driving the bust and I was right behind him in the front seat. Now I feel we are both steering the bus.”

“I know I can go out and beat these guys. People saw me and were surprised in my last fight about the power that I now have. I had some time off and with my new strength and condition coach Hasaan Watler, people are going to see that dimension to my game more and more.”

When asked about his opponent, Doel Carrasquillo (12-12-1, 10 KO’s), Chambers was very confident in facing this very experienced opponent.

“I think he tries to be a tough guy and walk you down. I defiantly can see that he can punch a little bit but I will be more than ready for anything he tries to give on Friday night.”

In the co-feature, Philadelphia Middleweight, Gee Cullmer (16-1, 3 KO’s) takes on Loren Myers (7-7, 2 KO’s) of Fresno, CA in a scheduled eight round bout.
