LAS VEGAS (Nov. 23, 2009) – Team Ruiz has responded to false allegations made in two press releases by promoter Don King, who erroneously stated that, “John Ruiz is my fighter,” as well as falsely claiming the World Boxing Association (WBA) had sanctioned an “Interim” title fight between one of King’s fighters, Kali Meehan, and former champion Ruslan Chagaev.

Ruiz’ contract with Don King Productions (DKP) expired last month, prior to his Nov. 7 fight against Adnan Serin, legally allowing Ruiz to become a promotional free agent.

Team Ruiz believes King’s actions are out of desperation because he has lost his influence with all of the major boxing organizations and broadcast outlets as well as many of his fighters leaving or trying to leave him. Plus, Team Ruiz contends that King is seeking retribution against Team Ruiz for its successful blocking of King’s bid at the recent WBA convention in Colombia to create an “Interim” title fight involving one of his fighters. King also failed to have Chagaev, promoted by a different company, dropped in the WBA ratings behind three other King-promoted heavyweights.

Team Ruiz also asserts that King misled and lied to WBA directors at the convention by falsely claiming Haye would not fight Ruiz and was set to relinquish the WBA belt to fight one of the Klitschko brothers.

“It’s shame that Don King’s influence in the boxing industry has diminished so much that he has stooped to this level,” Ruiz’ manager/legal advisor Atty. Tony Cardinale said. “The fact is John Ruiz’ contract expired, by its own terms, Oct. 9, 2009. Apparently, Don has lost his ability to read or count as well. Any claim that he has made about DKP still having John under contract is simply a case of King attempting to confuse the public and negatively affect John’s opportunities to engage a new promoter. All of his recent actions, including distribution of a knowingly false press release regarding a so-called WBA sanctioned ‘Interim’ title fight between Meehan and Chagaev, are an effort by Don King to damage the Haye-Ruiz fight, which he has nothing to do with.”

Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, WBA Executive Director, sent the following email on Nov. 20 at 7:23 PM to all parties involved with the Haye-Ruiz fight: “The Assembly General deferred discussions of amendments to the rules referring to Interim titles. This means the Meehan vs. Chagaev bout will not be sanctioned as an Interim championship.”

Besides DKP being copied on the aforementioned email, it was distributed worldwide to the boxing media that Friday or Saturday (Nov. 20-21), prior to DKP issuing its false press releases.

“This is the nature of the beast we have been dealing with for the past 10 years. In every title fight John has engaged in under the DKP banner, King actively rooted for and supported John’s opponent, excluding only one fight (Ruiz vs. Kirk Johnson), in which he had no promotional interest in the opponent.”

Ruiz is the WBA No. 1 contender and official challenger to new WBA champion David Haye (by May 30, 2010). We have been assured that the Haye-Ruiz WBA title fight will take place next year between March 13 and April 3.

Truax Wins WBF Title in St. Paul!

St. Paul, MN- In front of a standing room only crowd at the St. Paul Armory Caleb “Golden” Truax of Osseo, MN claimed the WBF Intercontinental Super Middleweight title by cruising to a unanimous decision win over fellow prospect Kerry Hope.

Truax was able to find his rhythm and timing through the early portion of the fight until cuts opened on both fighters after a clash of heads in the third round. Through proficient work of both cutmen, Truax and Hope were able continue with few problems. Truax‘s counter punching ability gave Hope nightmares throughout the ten round affair and a few hard uppercuts drew loud cheers from the pro-Truax crowd.

England’s Hope took a number of hard shots but continued to press forward, although unable to match Truax’s connection percentage. Truax finished the fight strong behind chants of his last name from the St. Paul Armory and a mutual respect between the two combatants was visibly evident.

Scores across the board were 97-93 in Truax’s favor. In addition to picking up the vacant WBF Intercontinental Super Middleweight title, Truax improves to 14-0 (9 KO’s) while Hope falls to 12-3(1 KO).
Truax and his team have stated that they will now set their sights on a bout with Andy Kolle that would establish Minnesota middleweight supremacy.

“We are eying the match up”, said promoter Tony Grygelko. “It is a big fight locally and Caleb is up for it, so now it’s up to Team Kolle to accept the challenge.”

St. Paul’s Mohammed Kayongo returned following a one year layoff to overwhelm James Todd, 2-2, en route to a third round stoppage. Todd was decked in the first round and hung in tough until a beautiful combination from Kayongo put him down for the count in the third round. Kayongo, 15-2 (11 KO’s) claimed the vacant WBF Welterweight title.

Former nationally ranked amateur Michael Faulk improved to 2-0 with a unanimous decision win over Ryan Soft.

The undercard also featured three action packed MMA bouts.

Miguel Espino Vs. Kelly Pavlik Press Conference

While taking a brief hiatus from training camp, WBC CABOFE Middleweight Champion Miguel Espino (20-2-1, 9 KO’s) is headed to the “Entertainment Capital of the World” to officially announce his upcoming bout against Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KO’s) for Pavlik’s WBC and WBO World Middleweight titles. Strong Latino Influence on “World’s Greatest Ever Boxers”

Spectacular Three-Day Celebration Dec. 11-13 in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Nov. 23, 2009) – Latinos have had a profound influence on boxing, particularly in smaller-weight divisions, evident by 21 nominees in the ongoing “World’s Greatest Ever Boxer” (“WGEB”) promotion.

Eighteen of the 21 Latino “WGEB” nominees are in the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the remaining three – Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez and Marco Antonio Barrera – are surefire locks for induction as soon as they’re eligible.

On-line voting at www.GreatestEver.com allows boxing fans from around the world to select the greatest boxer in each of the original eight weight classes (10 candidates in each division except for 12 heavyweights), highlighted by the all-time pound-for-pound “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer.”

The Dec. 11-13 weekend of events at the Paris Las Vegas include a USA vs. The World pro boxing show on Saturday (Dec 12). Final results of the global on-line vote at www.GreatestEver.com will be announced Sunday (Dec. 13) at “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer” black-tie awards dinner.

The Dec. 11-13 weekend event is being presented by Greatest Ever Enterprises, which already has done “world’s greatest” tributes on two continents in the sports of soccer and rugby.

Roberto Duran, Wilfredo Gomez and Carlos Ortiz are among the numerous “WGEB” candidates already committed to attending the Dec. 11-13 weekend festivities in Las Vegas.

Argentinean middleweight CARLOS “Escopeta” MONZON (87-3-9 1 NC, 59 KOs), a 3-time world champion in the 1970’s, held the record at the time for 14 middleweight defenses. Monzon was a known playboy convicted of murder who was killed in car crash on weekend furlough. He had two victories against “WGEB” welterweight nominee Emile Griffith.

Mexican-American welterweight OSCAR “Golden Boy” De La HOYA (39-6, 30 KOs), 1992 Olympic gold medalist, defeated 17 world champions and was a 10-time world champion in six weight classes. Three-time world welterweight champion JOSE ANGEL “Mantequilla” NAPOLES (77-7, 54 KOs) was a national hero in Cuba and Mexico after he found asylum in Mexico after Fidel Castro banned pro boxing in Cuba.

The “WGEB” lightweights are well represented. Panamanian ROBERTO “Hands of Stone” DURAN (103-16, 70 KOs) was world champion in four different weight classes and the second fighter ever to fight in five different decades. Mexican icon JULIO CESAR “JC” CHAVEZ (108-6-2, 87 KOs), 6-time world champion in three weight classes, fought 25 years and was No. 1 Pound-for-Pound during one stretch. He started his pro career by winning first 88 fights and holds records for most world title defenses (27), most world title fights (37) and longest unbeaten streak (91). Puerto-Rican CARLOS ORTIZ (61-7-1, 1 NC, 30 KOs), a 4-time world champion in two divisions, moved to New York City and became first Puerto Rican world champion in more than 30 years and second ever at time.

Four of 10 “WGEB” bantamweights are Latinos. The recently deceased Nicaraguan favorite ALEXIS “El Fiaco de Explosivo” ARGUELLO (80-8, 64 KOs), a 6 -time world champion, was the sixth boxer to be world champion in three weight classes, only the second Latino. Mexican star SALVADOR “Chana” SANCHEZ (44-1-1, 32 KOs) won a world title at 19 but died in car crash in 1982 at the age of 23. Another Mexican warrior, “Baby Faced Assassin” MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA (65-7, 43 KOs) is a 7-time world champion in six divisions. “The Cuban Bon Bon” KID CHOCOLATE (131-9-6, 50 KOs) became the first Cuban world champion in the 1930’s.

Latinos dominate the “WGEB” bantamweight process with seven of 10 nominees. “Panama” Al Brown (123-18-10, 4 ND, (62 KOs) was boxing’s first Hispanic world champion. Mexican-American Manuel Ortiz (96-28-3, 49 KOs) was a 2-time world champion. Brazilian Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre was a 4-time world champion as a bantamweight and featherweight. Mexican Ruben “El Pucas” Olivares (88-13-3, 78 KOs) also was a 4-time world champion in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions. Another Mexican great, Carlos “Canas” Zarate (61-4, 58 KOs) set the record for two streaks of 20 or more knockout wins. Puerto Rican power puncher Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gomez (44-3-1 (42 KOs) was a Puerto Rican Olympian, 3-time world champion in three divisions, and he had one of the highest KO rates (95.4%) in boxing history, including 32 knockouts in a row (longest streak of any world champion). Mexican-American Orlando Canizales (50-5-1, 37 KOs) defended his IBF title belt a record 16 consecutive times.

Strawweights are included in the flyweight category. Pascual “El Terrier” Perez (84-7-1, 57 KOs), the first Argentinean world champion, didn’t lose as a pro until his 52nd fight. Four-time world champion Mexican Ricardo “Finito” Lopez (51-0-1, 38 KOs), who established the record for most consecutive title bouts without losing (26), defended his WBC Strawweight title 21 times. Mexican-American Michael “Little Hands of Steel” Carbahal (49-4, 33 KOs) was a 4-time world champion. Miguel “El Maestro” Canto (61-9-4, 15 KOs), another Mexican superstar, lost his first pro fight but went on to become WBC Flyweight champion, and holds the record for having 13 15-round title fights.
