This Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) will defend against Ward (20-0, 13 KOs) in their first Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 1 bout.

(Nov. 16, 2009) – Five days before they collide in the first Super Six World Boxing Classic Group Stage 1 bout in America, World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler of Denmark and undefeated Andre “S.O.G” Ward of Oakland participated in a free public workout Monday at King’s Gym in Oakland.
Kessler, whose WBA super middleweight title will also be on the line, will enter the ring for the 12-round match at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), with a record of 42-1 with 32 knockouts . Ward is 20-0 with 13 knockouts.
The Europeans held serve in the opening Group Stage 1 fights Oct. 17 on SHOWTIME, Arthur Abraham knocking out Jermain Taylor and Carl Froch outpointing Andre Dirrell in Germany and England, respectively.

MIKKEL KESSLER
“Ward is a real gentleman. He doesn’t talk trash. The best fighters I have fought are like him. It’s going to be a great fight on Saturday night.
“He’s a great, young fighter. He reminds me a lot of myself when I was his age. I won my first world title at 24, but I’m more experienced in a lot of different ways. I can see that he is hungry, has good speed and good technique. He’s a good fighter.
“I think my strengths are also speed and my experience. I have double the fights he has and I have had a lot of big fights.
“You can pick things up from all kinds of bouts. We all have different skills. I don’t see all of the big fights (in the United States) because I am busy and it’s more difficult (to see them) in Europe, but we have good fights in Europe, too.
“I have a lot of things to do (during his down time in fight week). There are places that I like to eat; I have to do a lot of media events. The more time off I have, the more I have to relax and watch movies.”
On tapering off closer to the fight
“You relax a little bit and you don’t have to train twice a day anymore. I will go for a half an hour or an hour a day and that’s it.
“I’m not the kind of guy who watches tape. I watched some of his fights a couple times and we talked about it. I’m well prepared.”
ANDRE WARD
“People are often surprised when they fight me. You see one thing and get in the ring and see something different. (Edison) Miranda told me in the locker room after the fight that he thought I would be a lot easier than I was and I’ve heard that a lot during my career, even going back to the amateurs. I have no idea what it is about my style, but they would hear I was the No. 1 guy and see me fight and say ‘that’s Ward?’ We do it in such a way that it looks easy until they get in the ring with me.
“This is what it’s all about, I’ve been at the highest level as an amateur and now I’m preparing for my first world title fight as a professional. I see all you guys (media on hand) and I know what a big fight is all about. I’m ready.”
On Fighting at Home
“It’s incredible to have this fight at home and the support here has been outstanding. A lot of people say that boxing is dead in Oakland. There used to be two or three gyms full of boxers here. Boxing was a huge thing and to see the excitement for this fight here in Oakland and in the Bay Area and to give them something positive to support, I’m excited about that.
“As the fight gets closer, I draw into myself more. I envision what it would feel like to leave the arena with the belt and what it would feel like to leave without the belt. I’m doing everything I can to leave the Oracle Arena with the WBA strap on Saturday night.
“I’m eating just fine. We don’t do sauna or anything like that. I’m doing OK on weight, but I am looking forward to the weigh-in.
“We’ve had a game plan for the past nine weeks, since the last fight. We have a general plan but at the end of the day, it’s going to be about getting in there and being myself, being Andre Ward. The days that you go in there and try to be perfect are usually your worst days, but the days that you go in there and say I’m going to have fun and do what I do are generally your best.
“We go back and look at every fight. We saw mistakes in the Miranda fight and we’ve corrected those.”
On tapering down close to the fight
“As far as the physical side, things have toned down. We are at our peak. It is tempting for a fighter to over-prepare. I don’t think we’ve done that. I think we are right where we need to be. That comes with experience. This is my 21st fight and we’re beginning to master all of the aspects of preparing for a fight from the weight to handling media appearances.”
In response to Kessler’s trainer saying Andre doesn’t like to get hit
“I don’t think anybody likes to get hit. Miranda hit me more than I would have liked in my last fight. but I responded and came right back. Who has hit Mikkel Kessler clean? Who has really caught him so we could see what his chin is really like? Joe Calzaghe isn’t a puncher.”

“This is just like Andre Ward’s run to the gold medal, but in the pro ranks. On his path to gold, no one gave him a shot, everyone else was the favorite, and this is the same situation. “For me there are three favorites to win the Super Six World Boxing Classic – Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham and Andre Ward. It will be important to start the group stages with a victory. Obviously, Ward has the tremendous advantage of fighting at home – that is a big help.
“Ward has a tremendous unbeaten run. His Olympic gold medal as well as his professional record speak volumes about his class. He is certainly a very special fighter but one does not know where his boundaries are. He has never been tested and he has never fought someone like Mikkel, so Saturday will be Ward´s first big test.
“In my opinion the difference between the two fighters is Mikkel´s huge experience and also his well-known punching power. So for me Kessler is the favorite but only just as you cannot be too sure because we don´t know where Ward is at and what his limits are.
“Obviously for Mikkel, Saturday´s fight will be as important as the clash against Calzaghe and I am sure he will make a great fight.”

MAYWEATHER HAS YET TO HEAR PACQUIAO CALL HIS NAME

“They are all talking for him but Manny Pacquiao has yet to say he wants to fight me. If he wants to fight me all he has to do is step up to the plate.”
Las Vegas, NV (November 16)… Floyd Mayweather, who listened to several comments made by Manny Pacquiao’s promoter and trainer about a possible match-up between the two fighters, still has yet to hear Manny Pacquiao himself say he wants to fight him.
“Manny Pacquiao is the fighter and every time someone asks him if he wants to fight me, he says it is up to his promoter, he’s going to take a vacation, whatever the answer is. I have yet to hear him actually say, ‘yes I want to fight Mayweather.’ We are the fighters and if one fighter is talking about fighting another fighter, then they should just come out and say it. Manny Pacquiao doesn’t say anything directly about fighting me because he might just know it’s not a fight he can win.
“He said during an interview he did leading up to his fight that he didn’t think I wanted to fight him and that boxing for me was just a business and I wasn’t interested in a good fight. But again, he never said during that interview that he would fight me. Why is he talking about what I won’t do instead of what he wants to do? Plain and simple, it’s because he knows he can’t beat me under any circumstances.
“Less than an hour after his fight Saturday night the talk turns back to me. Their whole promotion was just a Mayweather sweepstakes. They know it and anyone could figure that out. Why, because my name kept coming up and I didn’t even say anything. Even when he was interviewed on ESPN by Brian Kenny, he was asked about fighting me and what did he say? Not ‘yes I want to fight Mayweather or bring it on.’ But no! He said ‘hum, ahh, well talk to my promoter.’
“The world is much more intrigued by the thought of someone fighting me who can beat me. That is what everyone wants to see and the boxing world is trying to find that guy. Manny Pacquaio’s people have done a good job of creating an image of him to be this unbelievable fighter and now the so-called guy to beat me. But like all the rest, he’s not the one.
“There is boxing and then there is me. The rest are just falling in line behind me or are trying to get in line to fight me. And that includes Manny Pacquiao too.
“Tell Manny Pacquiao to be his own man and stop letting everyone, including his loudmouth trainer, talk for him. I am my own boss, speak for myself and tell it like it is. If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself.”
Russian freestyle lineup set for four events in the United States this week

The Russian Wrestling Federation has released its final lineup for the freestyle team which is traveling to the United States this week to compete in four events.
The Russian freestyle team will face Freestyle Team USA at the Chicago Cup at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, November 15. The Chicago Cup will be webcast live on TheMat.com.
It will then face a different lineup from Freestyle Team USA in a World Dual meet at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Wednesday, November 18. The dual meet in Iowa will be webcast by TakedownRadio.com and LiveSportsVideo.com. Broadcast team for the Iowa event includes
Mark Ironside, Dan Gable and Hawkeye Play by Play radio voice Steven Grace. Event coverage set to get underway at 6:30 PM CST.
On Friday, November 20, there will be a third Freestyle Team USA vs. Russia dual meet, held at the New York Athletic Club in New York, N.Y.
The final appearance for the Russian team will be at the New York Athletic Club International Freestyle Championships at the New York Athletic Club in New York, N.Y. on Sunday, November 22.
Information on additional broadcasts will be announced when available.
The Russian team features numerous athletes who have won international medals on the World or Continental levels. Included are some of the top young stars in the Russian program. Russia is currently the reigning World Champion team in freestyle wrestling.
Leading the effort is Nariman Israpilov at 55 kg/121 lbs., a 2009 European champion and the 2008 Junior World champion.
Two of the team members have won silver medals at the Russian National Freestyle Championships, Arsen Mairov at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Anzor Urishev at 84 kg/185 lbs. Mairov was a Russian National silver medalist in 2009, while Urishev won his Russian National silver medal in 2008. Urishev was also a Junior World silver medalist at 2008.
Bronze medalists at the Russian Freestyle Nationals on the tour include Vladimir Vilmov at 60 kg/132 lbs., Magomed Magomedov at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Valeri Bedoev at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Bedoev won two Russian National bronze medals competing up at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Vilmov won a gold medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo. in 2009.

Tunica, MS – Prize Fight Boxing showcases a slew of young talent on “Boxing’s Future Champions III” Saturday Night at Fitzgeralds Casino in Tunica, MS.
The main event of the evening features highly touted junior middleweight Shawn “Showtime” Porter against Jerome “Boomer” Ellis and can be viewed by fans from all four corners of the globe for just $4.99 on Prizefighttv.com and Gofightlive.tv.
A 2008 United States Olympic Alternate, Porter, 10-0 (8 KO’s), served as Manny Pacquiao’s primary sparring partner leading up to his fight with Miguel Cotto. The Akron, OH native also appeared on HBO’s famed 24-7 series and received kudos from three time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach for pushing the pound for pound king to the max.
Ellis, 12-9-2 (10 KO’s), is tougher than advertised and has one of the most deceptive records in boxing. Hailing from Coconut Creek, FL by way of Nassau, Bahamas, Ellis fought to a draw with well regarded Richard Gutierrez, while a dropping close decisions to title challengers Miki Rodriguez, Irving Garcia and rising star Antwone Smith among others. The gritty Ellis holds victories over three unbeaten fighters and was stopped just once.
Porter and Ellis meet over 8 rounds.
The co-main event features an eight round lightweight contest between Tyrese “Head Honcho” Hendrix, 17-0-1 (7 KO’s), of Gainesville, GA and 67 fight veteran Marteze “Too Sweet” Logan of Covington, TN. Hendrix has put together a string of impressive performances, most recently stopping 12-3 Robbie Cannon inside of two rounds.
Philadelphia, PA super middleweight Farah Ennis makes his much anticipated return to the ring over six rounds against Tuscaloosa, AL’s Anthony Doughty 5-1 (4 KO’s). Ennis, 11-0 (5 KO’s), outpointed unbeaten Bobby Jordan in June.
Also appearing on the undercard in separate bouts are amateur sensation turned knockout artist Dominic “The Blade” Wade, two time US Amateur Champion Mike Wilson and Star Boxing’s Raymond “Tito” Serrano.
“The card will be nothing short of sensational”, said promoter Russ Young. “You have Shawn Porter in his first main event supported by four very talented fighters below him.
