LOS ANGELES, California (August 25, 2009) – In anticipation of the upcoming showdown between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Juan Manual “Dinamita” Marquez on September 19 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, fans will have an unprecedented ‘first look’ opportunity to watch “Countdown to Mayweather vs. Marquez” a special behind the scenes ‘making of’ fight preview show that will begin airing nationally on Fox Sports Net (FSN) affiliates (check your local listings) starting Wednesday, August 26 and running through Friday, September 11.

The 13th annual DUMBO Art Festival at Gleason’s Gym is September 26 and 27, 2009. Any and all artists that would like to display their work should call Bruce at (718) 797 2872. NEW YORK (August 24, 2009) — K-1 legend and five-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0), will make his STRIKEFORCE mixed martial arts (MMA) debut when he takes on Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight contest on the SHOWTIME televised portion of the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, Sept. 25.

The 38-year-old Sefo, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds, boasts the highest KO percentage in K-1’s 16 year history. In 2007, he relocated from his native New Zealand to Las Vegas, Nev., and adopted Randy “The Natural” Couture’s Xtreme Couture camp as his new training ground.

A Muay Thai stylist known for his punishing leg kicks and a steel chin, Sefo has made eight trips to the K-1 “World Grand Prix Finals,” an annual, year-end tournament that pits the world’s top eight heavyweight kickboxers against one another in a single-elimination tournament completed over the course of one night. During a 14-year professional kickboxing career, he has conquered a number of fellow all-time greats, including three-time World Grand Prix Finals” tournament champion, Peter Aerts; two-time K-1 tournament winner, Jerome LeBanner; and former World Boxing Federation champion and three-time world kickboxing champion, Mike Bernardo.

In his sole MMA appearance, Sefo stopped Min Soo Kim with a high kick in the second round (:30) of their K-1 “Hero’s 2” matchup in Japan on July 6, 2005.

Also 38 years of age, Jordan is a nine-year veteran of MMA who has made two appearances in UFC competition. In his last effort, the 6 foot 3 inch, 245-pound Jordan earned a unanimous decision victory over MMA pioneer and UFC 2 runner up Patrick Smith, in Salem, New Hampshire, on July 31, 2009.

Born in Alabama, Jordan recently move to Cortland, N.Y., from Columbus, Georgia, where he spent nearly 10 years training United States Army personnel stationed at nearby Fort Benning in the military martial arts system called Modern Army Combatives.

Watch the above clip of the final round of Diaz v. Malignaggi, and you will notice body language tells the whole story. Diaz is so busy getting his face mopped up he doesn’t have time to raise his arms. Meanwhile Malignaggi is running around celebrating like a madman. Paulie’s smiling. Diaz is frowning, and we don’t even see a flash of a smile on his face until a few seconds before the decision comes in. One man is acting like a beaten man, and his own mother is praying for a miracle at ringside. The other is acting like he just beat Ali.

The fact is, Malignaggi was the fresher fighter the whole length of the contest. He took some big blows early and lost some points, but he came back and sealed things up in the later rounds with a super smooth “up-jab” and great body and head movement. No man wound up on the canvas, so Gale Van Hoy must have been smoking crack between rounds to judge it 118-110 either way. This was a fight judges had very close, and Harold Lederman’s HBO card was much more accurate. He had Malignaggi winning by 2 rounds. At the very least, the fight should have been declared a draw so we could see it again.

The real problem is we know Paulie won that fight. We saw it with our own eyes. He may not have done it with raging fists and knockout power, but he did it. He picked apart Diaz with precision, accuracy, and a perpetual jab and occasional right. If styles make fights, they should win fights, too. Malignaggi’s style was much better than anything Diaz could muster except for a few moments in the early rounds when Diaz seemed to have Paulie hurt. There’s no excuse for giving the fight to Diaz on a silver platter. Yet, we all know there will be no serious investigation. The fight is in the books and the results won’t change. Paulie will be forever stained by a loss he doesn’t deserve after 12 hard rounds he worked his ass off to be ready for.

Whenever you see the better man walk out the loser, the human reaction is to feel disdain for the perpetrators. Who put the fix in? The problem with boxing is we don’t always know who those people are. It could be a long list of “usual suspects,” but the cardinal rule seems to be what’s done is done, and we can’t go back. Paulie’s post-fight commentary was correct in pointing out that these types of bad decisions are hurting boxing as a sport:

I don’t disagree that boxing is “full of shit,” but of course there is a much better way of saying that in a family-friendly way. However crass he may be, though, Malignaggi is right on the money. There are a great deal of problems with boxing that need to change in the evolution of the sport. This is not a situation instant replay would have helped. Those types of little tweaks may change some outcomes for the better, but not enough. We may not agree with all of Paulie’s fast-talking, hateful, and heat-of-the-moment speech, but we all know what he’s upset about is completely unacceptable in any other sport and should be in boxing, too. In a sport that is so geared on the individual, status, and politics, you have to consider Paulie a very brave man for saying what he did. While he might be right about his “opponent” status whether he said it out loud or not, putting it out there for everyone to hear seals his fate. The sad truth is he may never again see a title shot.

Something needs to change in boxing so these kind of spectacles don’t stain the sport so much anymore. Forget about instant replay. We need instant over-rulings of bad decisions. There has to be a better way than this.

(August 24, 2009) – Undefeated prospect Fernando Guerrero (14-0, 12 KOs) is a rising star in the middleweight division, as well as the August 29th headliner on the “Boxing’s Future Champions II” pay-per-view pro card, shown live on streaming video from Fitzgerald’s Casino & Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi.

The first boxing match publicly shown in movie theaters was the Eric Boon vs. Arthur Danaher fight in London seen in only three theaters on Feb. 23, 1939. The first boxing match shown in U.S. movie theaters was the Joe Louis vs. Lee Savold bout from Madison Square Garden in New York on June 15, 1951. The last fight to be widely shown in movie theaters was Sugar Ray Leonard’s victory over Roberto “Fists of Stone” Duran in the famous “No Mas” fight on Nov. 25, 1980.

A 1996 Olympic Bronze medalist for the United States, Floyd Mayweather (39-0, 25 KO’s) has since gone on to strike gold in the professional ranks, firmly establishing himself as the best fighter of his era. Mayweather won his first world title – the WBC Super Featherweight World Championship – at the age of 21 in 1998. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native defended that title eight times before moving up to lightweight and taking the 135-pound belt in 2002. He went on to win the junior welterweight and welterweight world titles, respectively. Mayweather defeated Oscar de la Hoya in May of 2007 for the World Junior Middleweight Championship in a record-setting pay-per-view super-fight and in his last fight in December 2007, knocked out Ricky “Hitman” Hatton in the tenth round, handing the British superstar his first professional defeat. Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing soon after that fight. He went on to achieve crossover fame as a contestant on the hit show “Dancing with the Stars” and as a participant in WWE’s “Wrestlemania XXIV.”

Mexico City’s Marquez(50-4-1, 37 KO’s) has long been revered by boxing purists as one of the best in the sport, having won 29 of his first 30 pro bouts before finally getting a world title shot in 1999. Following a loss in that fight, he didn’t lose again for the next seven years. Marquez won the IBF Featherweight World Championship in 2003 and in the same year, also captured the WBA Featherweight title. Marquez would lose his belt via controversial decision in 2006, but he returned to win the WBC Junior Lightweight World Championship in March 2007. Marquez moved up to the 135-pound weight class in September of 2008 and won the Ring Magazine Lightweight World Championship. The 36-year-old added the WBA and WBO World Lightweight belts to his trophy case in his most recent fight on February 28, 2009.
