Kattar fighting for MMA Title on 9/11 American Steel Cagefighting show Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire

SALEM, New Hampshire (August 20, 2009) – The Boston-New York City sports rivalry enters the cage Friday night, September 11 as American Steel Cagefighting (ASC) presents, in association with the Icenter and Bellabance Beverage of Nashua (NH), its second mixed martial arts show, featuring a pair of NABC MMA East Coast Championship fights, at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.

Hot, popular prospect Calvin “The Boston Finisher” Kattar (7-0-1) takes on Andrew “New York State of Mind” Montanez (7-10-1) for the vacant NABC MMA East Coast lightweight title (155 lbs.) in the 5-round main event.

Kattar, who now lives in Andover, is a natural athlete and former wrestling star at Methuen High. He took a break from college after one semester and realized he missed the competition he had from wrestling. After watching his sister’s friend, Dave George, in an MMA fight, Calvin immediately decided that he wanted to be an MMA fighter and did so. Now based out of Premier Martial Arts in Derry (NH), Kattar made his pro MMA debut after only six months of training, and now he’s one of the top MMA prospects on the East Coast.

Despite his strong wrestling background, Calvin would prefer to stay on his feet and strike. “I remember feeling after a loss in high school that, if I could have punched my opponent in the face,” Kattar explained, “I would have won. This sport allows me to do that. I prefer to fight on my feet, but I’ve gone to the ground twice, and won by both times by submission.”

“Calvin has the heart, dedication to training and determination to be a world champion,” promoter Sal LoNano, of Tewksbury, commented. “He is the top fighter, MMA or boxing, in the Merrimack Valley area, arguably the best MMA prospect in New England, possibly on the entire East Coast. He can really put on a show. Having him in the main event on our Sept. 11th show is huge for our new company. Calvin Kattar has the whole package to go to the top of the MMA world.”

The 5-round co-main event is an unusual match between two undefeated prospects, Mike Geurin (5-0-0) and Lorenzo Hood (5-0-0), for the vacant NABC MMA East Coast middleweight crown. Geurin-Hood doesn’t figure to go the distance. Geurin has three wins by knockout among his five victories, while the power-striking Hood has stopped all five of his opponents in the opening round.

“We’re excited to be hosting fights in our second show for the first two NABC MMA East Coast titles,” LoNano added. “Both are going to be tough fights. We’re building out promotional company and our goal is to groom fighters to move up to the UFC. We’re showcasing talent, especially New England fighters, so the UFC will recognize them.”

Hometown favorite Tyson “Psycho” Akl, fighting out of Salem (NH), makes his pro debut against middleweight Collin Schrader (1-0-0), while popular welterweight Doug “Flash” Gordon (10-7-0), winner of ASC’s main event fight July 31st at the Icenter, returns to meet Ralph Johnson (2-0-0) in the cage.

Also scheduled to fight on the ASC card against opponents to be determined are unbeaten New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (8-0-1), Worcester featherweight Evan Parker (1-0-0), Manchester welterweight Adam “Lonewolf” McQuaid (1-0-0), and pro debuting Methuen middleweight James Quinlin.

All fights and fighters are subject to change. Doors open at 6 PM, first fight at 8 PM.

ARGENTINIAN VICENTE MARTIN RODRIGUEZ FOE FOR ROMAN MARTINEZ IN “UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS” SEPTEMBER 12 IN PUERTO RICO

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (August 20, 2009) – WBO junior lightweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez has an opponent for his first defense, September 12 on the “Undefeated Champions” pay per view card, presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions, in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot.

Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KO’s), who won the 130-pound title last March in England when he knocked out British fighter Nicky Cook, will defend his WBO 130 pounds title versus Argentinean Vicente Martin Rodriguez.

“Rodriguez is a fighter that is ranked No. 9 by the WBO and he Martinez’ opponent for ‘Rocky’s’ first title defense,” said promoter Ivan Rivera, president of PR Best Boxing Promotions.

Rodriguez (25-2, 13 KOs), 24, has had 26 of his 27 fights in Argentina, the exception in Australia.

“Undefeated Champions” is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand and DirecTV for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

In the main event, unbeaten WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon (32-0-1 6KO’s), from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, will face Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KO’s) in a rematch of their June 13 fight that ended in a technical draw after six rounds due to a cut suffered from an accidental head-butt to Calderon’s head.

The IBO is looking to sanction MMA and aid in its lacking rank structure. Many believe the future of the sport is run through sanctioning bodies like the IBO and the Art of Fighting is proud to host the first ever World Title for the WFO.

PETRUZELLI VS. BATEN

Seth Petruzelli is a seasoned MMA fighter with appearances in the WEC, UFC, and EliteXC. Petruzelli is well known as the “Kimbo Killer” after his October 2008 destruction of street fighting youTube star Kimbo Slice. Petruzelli wasn’t even scheduled to fight Kimbo, but after a cut opened above MMA legend Ken Shamrock’s eye, Seth “The Silverback” Petruzelli stepped in to fill his spot and fill it he did. Now seen as the “Rocky” of MMA, Petruzelli KO’d Slice in an astonishing 14 seconds of the first round in front of a stunned crowd of millions on CBS. The August 22 bout at the USF SUN DOME will be Petruzelli’s first fight since defeating Kimbo Slice.

Chris Baten is no Kimbo. Baten is a seasoned MMA fighter who has made appearances in the now extinct IFL. At 205 lbs. Baten will be an entirely different opponent for Petruzelli as fans should expect to see a standup war. Baten is also a Tampa Area police officer who has a large following in the area. Baten will seek to defeat a big time name in the sport cementing his name as one of the world’s best fighters.

OTHER MATCHUPS
Other matchups include the IFL vet Delson “Pe de Chumbo” Heleno versus the heavy handed pride of Kansas Tyler Stinson. This fight is going to be extremely exciting as Stinson has already put on a great show of skill in his first AOF vicotry against the Swiss Muay Thai Champion Yasubey Enomoto. Delson Heleno is an extremely well rounded fighter who brings a nuclear amount of energy into the cage. These two fighters are amongst some of the other elite athletes to be in the Sun Dome on August 22.

UPDATE:

EliteXC star American Top Team Trainer, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo black belt Nicolae “Armor” Cury slated to fight WEC vet Justin Haskins at 170 lbs.

Lightweight State Champion, Eric Reynolds has been just added to the card to fight Ireland’s Greg Loughran. Both fighters did a short stint on ESPN Deportes’ Bellator Promotion. Eric is the Florida State Lightweight Champion, the belt is not on the line since Loughran is not from Florida.

The show, produced by AMP Film Studios Creative Director, Edward Isin, will be available in its entirety in over 44 million homes in the US, Canada, and parts of Mexico and the Caribbean using Pay Per View On Demand services on popular cable and Telco outlets, including ATT Uverse, Verizon Fios, Time Warner, Cox Communications, Comcast and More.

FightZone TV will air the event at a later date on Sun Sports, Sport South, DIRECTV, The Dish Network and ATT U-verse to over 25 million homes.

Bradley Signs New Deal with Strikeforce

WEEKEND BOXING PREVIEW

At Houston (HBO): Juan Diaz vs. Paulie Malignaggi, 12 rounds, junior welterweights; Malcolm Klassen vs. Robert Guerrero, 12 rounds, for Klassen’s IBF junior lightweight title; Daniel Jacobs vs. Ishe Smith, 10 rounds, middleweights.

There are a number of interesting fight cards this weekend. But, before looking at one in particular, I wanted to address some news today, regarding Nick Charles from Showtime. Charles, who is one of the ringside announcers for the ShoBox series, is fighting bladder cancer. I’ve always enjoyed listening to Charles, and think that he adds to the sport, because he clearly loves boxing.

Charles also has respect and admiration for the men who step inside of the ring, and participate in the Great Sport. Not only that, but I’ve had the opportunity to meet Nick Charles and Steve Farhood at the Boxing Hall of Fame, and they are outstanding guys. They were happy to take the time to mix with the people at the annual induction ceremonies.

I’m hoping for a quick and full recovery for Nick Charles. I look forward to him returning to ringside, as soon as he is able to.

Now, for some of this week’s fights. There were a large number of cards that I did not include at the top of this article, mainly because they are not being televised. However, it is interesting to note that there are a number of good fights scheduled in the middleweight divisions. There are also some less competitive or interesting fights, involving some of the older heavyweights. That sums up the state of boxing’s big division.

HBO is featuring a very good card on Saturday. It includes the IBF super featherweight title match between Malcolm Klassen (24-4-2, 15 KOs) and. Robert Guerrero (24-1-1, 17 KOs);
and also a junior welterweight fight between Juan Diaz (34-2, 17 KOs) and. Paul Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KOs); and a middleweight fight bout featuring Daniel Jacobs (17-0, 15 KOs) vs. Ishe Smith (21-3, 9 KOs).

Daniel Jacobs, 22, is one of the most talented prospects that I’ve had the pleasure of watching in recent years. He won 7 national amateur championships between 2003 and ’06. And since turning professional, he has been showing consistent improvement.

Ishe Smith, 31, was an undefeated prospect, until losing to tough Sergio Mora in NBC’s “The Contender,” in 2004. He appeared to lose focus, and lost two of his next six fights. But he’s put together a couple of wins in a row, including an upset win over previously undefeated Pawel Wolak last year.

It should be an interesting fight. Smith isn’t a big banger, but he has a good chance of winning. He needs to set the pace, and frustrate Jacobs’ attempts to land combinations. Still, I favor the younger man in this fight by unanimous decision.

In the co-feature, Robert Guerrero moves up in weight, to try to take the IBF super featherweight crown. He’s had an impressive run as a featherweight, wining both the NABF and IBF titles. I thought that one of his most impressive victories came in a February, 2008 title defense against hard-punching Jason Litzau, who he KOed in 8 rounds. Guerrero’s only loss came in 2005, when he lost a split-decision to Gamaliel Diaz; six months later, he flatten Diaz in a return match.

South Africa’s Malcolm “Stone” Klassen is also a hard-punching, talented fighter. This will be his first fight in the United States. He has definitely faced some quality opposition in his career, but I think Guerrero has more experience against top-notched fighters. It could prove difficult for Klassen to debut here against someone as tough as Guerrero. Still, he is the naturally bigger man, and is certainly aware of the scar tissue over Guerrero’s eye. This should be a slugfest, and it is difficult to imagine it going more than five or six rounds.

The main event is a contest between two seasoned veterans, in one of those fights where I wish that neither man had to lose. Juan Diaz and Paul Malignaggi are scheduled to go 12 rounds in what is definitely a “crossroads fight” for both.

Diaz, 25, is a college-educated former lightweight champion, who is moving up in weight after losing two of his last three fights. These are his only loses, and loses to warriors like Nate Campbell and Juan Manuel Marquez is no shame. However, Diaz absorbed a significant amount of punishment in both of these fights. Going against Malignaggi now is a clear indicator of what a tough competitor Diaz is.

Malignaggi, 28, is a thoughtful man, who often comes off as a brash street urchin. He also has only two loses, to Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton. He, too, took a lot of punishment in those fights. Although he had problems with his hands, and wasn’t considered a powerful puncher, Paul actually wobbled Cotto late in their fight.

Diaz is an aggressive fighter, who can be counted on to throw a high volume of punches. In the past, he would have had trouble finding Malignaggi in the ring. However, in what I consider a bad move, Paul bulked up after the Cotto fight. I understand why he would want to put on some muscle to compete in one of the toughest divisions in boxing. However, he has slowed down half a step, and his once brilliant defensive skill are not what they once were.

There are going to be two important factors in this fight. The first will be who is able to do more damage with their punches? Make no mistake: both of these fighters has the ability to hurt anyone they hit. But, more important, will be who can keep up a fast pace in that ring longer? One of the two is likely to pull out a decision, by imposing their will in the last few rounds in an otherwise close fight. I think that even though there is not a title at stake, this should be one of the most interesting fights of 2009.

SOUTHHAVEN, Miss. (August 19, 2009) – An unbeaten duo of soon to be ready-for-primetime prospects — middleweight Fernando Guerrero (14-0, 12 KOs) and junior middleweight Shawn Porter (9-0, 7 KOs) — will be showcased August 29 on the “Boxing’s Future Champions II” pay-per-view pro card, live on streaming video from Fitzgerald’s Casino & Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi.

Also fighting on this entertaining card is once-beaten Philadelphia heavyweight “Gentleman” Chazz Witherspoon (25-1, 17 KOs), as well as exciting middleweight Dominic Wade (3-0, 3 KOs), 4-time Junior Olympic champion, and 2004-2005 U.S, Super Heavyweight Champion Mike Wilson in his much anticipated pro debut.

Guerrero (14-0, 12 KOs), born in the Dominican Republic, has already fought twice on ESPN and once on Showtime. The talented southpaw headlined the inaugural “Boxing’s Future Champions” show this past June in his hometown of Salisbury, Maryland, knocking out Brian “The Assassin” Norman in the second round.

The 22-year-old Guerrero, who captured a gold medal at the World Cadet Junior Olympics and 2007 USA National Championships, has also cracked the ratings and is No. 10 in the NABF and No. 14 in the NABO. He faces Chris “On Target” Archer (11-7, 7 KOs), in the 8-round main event.

The 6-round co-feature matches 2007 World Golden Gloves champion, 2008 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Porter (9-0, 7 KOs), against Lamar Harris (6-2, 4 KOs).

Witherspoon was the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion and his only loss in 26 pro fights was to world title challenger Chris Arreola, last year by a controversial disqualification. Witherspoon, whose cousin Tim was world heavyweight champion, takes on gatekeeper Stacy “Big Foot” Frazier (14-5, 13 KOs) in an 8-round bout.

Also on the undercard in 4-round bouts is Wade, versus 23-fight veteran Tyrone Dowdy, and Wilson, who meets battle-tested “Marvelous” Marvin Hunt. Wilson defeated Travis Kaufman and Mike Marrone in the amateurs.
