TAKEDOWN RADIO REPORT (7-9-09)

This week we take the Brute Adidas studios on the road and broadcast from the The Pro Hall of Fame inside the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum. This is a special weekend for many as they get to see, hear and meet their childhood pro wrestling heroes.

The 11 th class is comprised of living wrestlers Nick Bockwinkel, longtime world heavyweight champion in the AWA; Ricky Steamboat, a superstar in the WWF, and Fritz Von Goering, who wrestled many of the top stars of the 1950s and ‘60s, and all five of the other inductees at one point in his long career.

Three deceased wrestlers are also being inducted: Bronko Nagurski, Luther Lindsay and Karl Gotch.

Bockwinkel was the son of former pro star Warren Bockwinkel and was a top college football prospect at Oklahoma University before injuries put him on the sidelines. He then turned his attention to pro wrestling full time, early in the 1950s. Over the next 30 years, he wrestled every major star in the business and held the AWA world heavyweight title for nearly seven years, as well as dozens of lesser belts. One of the most popular heels in wrestling history, he has been president of the Cauliflower Alley Club (CAC) for the past several years and resides in Las Vegas.

A native of Hawaii, Steamboat was an amateur wrestler in Florida before entering the pro ranks in 1976, for Verne Gagne’s AWA. He entered the WWF in 1985 and became known as The Dragon and often struck karate poses in the ring, and electrified the crowds with his skills and antics. His title bouts with Ric Flair are among the best matches of the past two decades. Ricky captured the NWA world championship in 1989. He retired 1994 and lives today in Denver, N.C., working for the WWE.

Von Goering was a street-tough kid from Chicago when he turned pro in 1950. He learned the business the hard way, traveling around the country to take on the biggest names in the industry and learning all he could. He spent gym time with pure wrestlers like Dick Hutton, Lou Thesz and Luther Lindsay to learn the craft and today is one of the last from his generation. He won numerous regional titles in his 27-year career. He lives in Campbell, California.

From northern Minnesota, Bronko Nagurski is one of the greatest football players of all time, and is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Professional Football Hall of Fame. While starring with the Chicago Bears in the late 1930s, Nagurski approached Lou Thesz about wrestling in the off-season and used his great athletic skills to become a huge draw in wrestling, holding the world NWA title several times in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He died in 1990, at age 82.

Lou Thesz was one of many who considered Luther Lindsay the best African-American wrestler of all time. Big, powerful and fast, he played football at Hampton Institute in Norfolk, VA, and later in the Canadian football league. He then turned to pro wrestling and was trained by Stu Hart in the art of hooking. Well known for his skills and athletic abilities in the ring, he was popular outside the ring as well. He died from a heart attack during a match in 1972, at the age of 47.

Karl Gotch holds a near mythical spot in the history of wrestling. A native of Belgium, he made the 1948 Olympic team at age 18. He then moved to England, where he trained in the legendary Wigan “Snake Pit,” learning hooking and ripping techniques that made him one of the most feared wrestlers of all time. He was an absolute legend in Japan and all places were shooting ability is revered. He died in 2007 at age 82 in Florida.

“The Future” is now for Nate Lamotte

ASC debut show July 31 at Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 9, 2009) – Back in 2006, Manchester welterweight Nate “The Future” Lamotte fought in New Hampshire’s first sanctioned pro mixed-martial-arts show and now his July 31st showdown against Doug “Flash” Gordon has been elevated to main event on American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) first professional mixed martial arts show, at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.

Lamotte-Gordon, the original co-feature, due to an injury replaces the originally scheduled main event between Lance Everson and Woody Weatherby.

IFL veteran Lamotte (10-4-0) started studying Shaolin Kempo with Sensei John Burgess when he was eight years old. Nate, who wrestled in high school and college, was given his nickname, “The Future,” by a friend who told him “he was the future of the sport.”

Gordon, fighting out of New Castle, Delaware, has a Brazilian Jui-Jitsu blue belt. His most notable win was a third-round knockout of a fighter with the sport’s most recognizable last name, Gregor Grace, via a devastating kick to the head in their fight last year.

The new co-main event finds New York lightweight Pat Audinwood (7-0-0) putting his undefeated pro record on the line against former Cage Fury Fighting champion, “Mr. Big” Al Buck (6-7-0).

UFC pioneer Patrick Smith (16-13-0) makes his New England debut versus another UFC veteran, super heavyweight Kevin “The Shamnan” Jordan (11-8-0), in the Super Fight.

Also scheduled to brawl on the explosive 10-fight ASC card is middleweight Lamont Lister (6-7-0) vs. Randy Rowe (2-6-0), Worcester featherweight Evan Parker (1-0-0) vs. Albert Ricco in his pro debut, lightweight Damien “The Omen” Trites (2-3-0) vs. Joe Dechaves (3-1-0); lightweight Brian Danner (1-1-0) vs. Chris Foster (3-0-0), welterweight Carlos Nieves (3-6-0) vs. Ryan Schieding (3-1-0); Boston welterweight Nick Drummond (2-0-0) vs. Manchester’s pro debuting Adam McQuaid. Al Germain Sterling faces Ibrahiem Tody, of Allston (MA), in a 145-pound amateur match.

PROVIDENCE (July 9, 2009) – Five-time world champion Vinny Paz will have a special book signing of his biography, “Fight Or Die: The Vinny Paz Story,” July 17th at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, prior to the “Braggin’ Rights” Pro-Am boxing card, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. CES’ latest signee, super middleweight Vladine Biosse (1-0, 1 KO), who played football at the University of Rhode Island and Dean College, has moved from the gridiron into the ring. He makes his CES debut in a 4-round fight against tough Rafael Jastrebski.

In the main event, former Undisputed Lightweight World Champion and hometown hero Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz takes on former 140-pound world titleholder Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi of Brooklyn, New York, while the co-featured bout sees heavy-handed Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero challenge for a world title in a second weight class when he takes on IBF Junior Lightweight World Champion Malcolm Klassen.

Both bouts, which are presented by Golden Boy Promotions, with Diaz vs. Malignaggi being presented in association with DiBella Entertainment and Guerrero vs. Klassen being presented in association with Branco Sports Productions, will air on HBO Boxing After Dark beginning at 9:45 pm ET/PT (8:45 pm CT). Boxing’s most exciting pound for pound fighter, Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (34-2, 17 KO’s) has accomplished a lot in the sport for a young man of just 25 years old. A former WBA World Lightweight Champion who defended his title five times before adding the WBO and IBF World Titles to his resume with technical knockouts of Acelino Freitas and Julio Diaz respectively, Houston’s finest is coming off an epic war with Juan Manuel Marquez in February. Though he fell short against the future Hall of Famer in a Fight of the Year candidate, Diaz is eager to go from hitting the books to hitting opponents following his graduation from the University of Houston – Downtown earlier this year.

“Ever since graduation, I’ve just been in the gym and I can’t wait to get back into the ring,” said Diaz. “Malignaggi is a slick opponent and a good test, but I’m confident that with my fans in Houston behind me, I’ll win the fight in exciting fashion.”

A brash Brooklynite who has been to the top of the boxing world as a former Junior Welterweight World Champion, Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KO’s) is more than flash in the ring. Owner of wins over Lovemore N’Dou, Herman Ngoudjo and Edner Cherry, the 28-year-old Malignaggi has also gone to battle against boxing superstars Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, but he knows that no fight is more important than the one ahead of him on August 22nd as it could lead to a another world title shot for him if he beats Diaz.

“I respect Juan Diaz as a fighter and I know this fight has the potential to be Fight of the Year,” said Malignaggi. “But I know what I have to do on August 22nd, and that’s to dominate every round. This is the kind of big fight I’ve been waiting for and the fans are definitely going to see the old Paulie Malignaggi in action.”

Hailing from Hammanskraal, South Africa, Malcolm Klassen (24-4-2, 14 KO’s) is the latest in the line of hard-nosed South African fighters to ascend to the peak of the boxing mountain. A ten-year veteran who rebounded from a rocky start to his career to win 11 of his last 12 bouts, Klassen came to the attention of the boxing world in 2008 with his win over former Five-Time World Champion Manuel “Mantecas” Medina and followed that with a seventh round technical knockout of South African boxing legend Cassius Baloyi in April that earned him the IBF 130-pound championship.

“I’m happy to be fighting in the United States for the first time and to be challenged by a respected fighter like Robert Guerrero,” said Klassen. “I expect a tough fight, but I waited too long to win this title and I’m not about to give it up on August 22nd.”

A ferocious puncher whose last 16 wins have come by knockout, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (24-1-1, 17 KO’s) has the type of power that can change the direction of a fight in a split second. A native of Gilroy, California, the popular Guerrero knows what it’s like to compete at the game’s highest level, having won the IBF Featherweight World Title twice. Now competing at 130 pounds, Guerrero – who is fresh off of an eighth round stoppage of veteran Efren Hinojosa in June – is ready to join the select few who can claim to be a world champion in two different weight classes.

“I miss being a world champion and knowing that I’m the best in the world, but I knew that after giving up my featherweight title I’d have to pay my dues all over again,” said Guerrero. “I think I’ve done that and on August 22nd, I’m excited to have the opportunity to become a champion again. YOUNG AND HUNGRY: GEGARD MOUSASI’s California Dreaming

SEAL BEACH, California (July 7, 2009) — “All my focus is on Gegard Mousasi,” asserts current Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (32-8-0) about his upcoming bout with the fast rising star. “He is a huge challenge for me. I look forward to stepping in there against a former Dream Middleweight Champion. This fight will be champion vs. champion.”

Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi (25-2-1) moved up in weight and will compete in a light middleweight bout against Sobral for Affliction M-1 Global’s “Trilogy” on August 1st at Honda Center in Anaheim. He has an impressive record, is currently ranked the #3 middleweight in the world by Sherdog and #7 middleweight by MMAWeekly, and made the majority of last year’s “Fighter of the Year” lists. Mousasi defeated Ronaldo “Jacare” de Souza for the Dream title last September and heavyweight Mark Hunt in the first round of DREAM’s highly-publicized Super-Hulk Tournament at Dream 9.

Mousasi is managed under the Red Devil International banner, the same association Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko fights under, and the two have worked out together. Fedor, whose headline fight with Josh Barnett for “Trilogy” promises to be a blockbuster match up, has influenced Mousasi in a number of ways. The young fighter even speaks in the same calm, collected manner as the heavyweight champ. “Training with him, that’s also one of the reasons I thought I can be a heavyweight,” says Mousasi of Fedor. “Standing next to Fedor, I feel so much bigger than him. When you train with him, he feels like a middleweight. He’s as strong as a heavyweight but as fast as a middleweight, so I think that makes him special. If I can take my speed as a middleweight, have that explosiveness and mobility and move up to heavyweight, I think that’s something a lot of them don’t have.”

And Mousasi has the same quiet confidence in his abilities as Fedor, too. “I feel always that I’m physically stronger than my opponents. I feel like my opponents can’t hurt me because I’m always comfortable in stand-up and there hasn’t been a fighter that’s ground-and-pounded me,” he says. “I feel like I can hurt them, but they can’t hurt me.”

Still, Mousasi anticipates that facing Sobral in the ring will be a tough trial of his skills. “It’s a good test for me, I’m training very hard for it,” says the Dutch-Armenian mixed martial artist. “Babalu is a big challenge. I like the way he fights—he fights to win. He’s a real fighter. I like fighters who come to fight. This fight will be and all out war. I think the fans will get an exciting fight.”

Sobral agrees. “Mousasi is a great match for me. (It’s) a great match for him, too. He’s a true champion. People might not know him in the U.S., but he’s a true fighter. I’m very impressed with him.”

Sobral will pose the biggest challenge for Mousasi on the ground, where his years of experience and expertise will be a threat. “I think he will be the better wrestler and Jiu-Jitsu guy,” says Mousasi. “But none of that matters—this is MMA.”

And what does Mousasi bring to the table to try to unhinge Sobral’s advantage on the ground? “He’s hungry to fight,” states Babalu, “That’s the big difference. We both have great styles, so this fight will come down to youth vs. experience. Mousasi is a young, hungry fighter. He wants it. Against him I have the experience and strategy and the fight’s in my backyard. That makes me think it’s equal. We will see which mindset wins out.”

“Even if he could take me down, I don’t see him (being able to) ground and pound me,” says Mousasi of Sobral. “I don’t see him getting mount or top position (or) that he can do any damage. I don’t see him submit(ting) me. So eventually it’ll be a stand up fight again. And sooner or later, I’ll catch him.” Mousasi, who is enjoying an incredible 12 victory winning streak will be making his American fight debut at “Trilogy”—a great opportunity to increase his fast growing fan base.

“I’m going to fight stand up. If I can take him down, I’ll take him down,” the six-foot-one, two-hundred and sixteen pound competitor asserts. “I feel strong, I feel explosive. I’m very confident. I think I can beat him.”
