Heavyweight War of Words: Ruiz jumps all over Arreola’s Comments

LAS VEGAS (July 1, 2009) – It didn’t take two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) very long to respond to comments made by unbeaten heavyweight contender Chris Arreola and his promoter, Dan Goossen, at a press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Arreola was quoted as saying, “There are a lot of old guys and former champs sitting around there that we need to take care of. Their time is up. They need to go.”

“This September,” Goossen added, “you’re going to see Chistobal fighting in California and you’re going to see him fighting a former world champion.”

If the WBA doesn’t rule that its heavyweight title-holder, Nicolai Valuev, immediately defend his title against the WBA’s mandatory challenger, Ruiz, “The Quietman” is ready to be the old guy, former world champion fighting Arreola in September.

“I’m willing to risk my WBA mandatory shot against Arreola, if he puts up his WBC mandatory,” Ruiz said from a Las Vegas gym where he’s been training. “What’s been taking him so long? I called him out in early May but he never said a word and his people never contacted mine. I don’t get it. He keeps complaining about not getting a title shot that he’s done nothing to deserve. Maybe he needs to push himself away from the dinner table and take a risk. I’m over-the-hill, huh? Well, I guess everybody thinks it should be a cake walk for him, but I’m not like his last opponent, who came out of retirement to fight him for the money.

“He wants to be the first Mexican to win the world heavyweight championship. Be a macho Mexican, Arreola. Walk the walk and fight the first and only Latino world heavyweight champ to really prove yourself. If it makes you feel better, I’ll retire for a few days, and wait for your call. Stop disrespecting me and talking trash unless you have the rocks to fight a real champion.”

UFC Pioneer Patrick Smith makes N.E. debut in Super Fight vs. Kevin Jordan

ASC debut show July 31 at Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire

SALEM, New Hampshire (July 1, 2009) – UFC pioneer Patrick Smith was there at the beginning and 16 years later the ageless wonder is still going strong as he prepares to fight another UFC veteran, super heavyweight Kevin “The Shamnan” Jordan (11-8-0), in the Super Fight on American Steel Cagefighting’s (ASC) first professional mixed martial arts show, July 31 at the Icenter in Salem, New Hampshire.

Smith (16-13-0), now fighting out of Milburn, Oklahoma, was a UFC pioneer, losing a tough fight to Ken Shamrock in UFC1. He came back strong in UFC 2, winning three fights in a row, before eventually losing in the championship match to legendary Royce Gracie. Patrick’s most notable wins have been against Rudyard Moncayo in UFC6 and last year versus Eric “Butterbean” Esch.

Reflecting on his MMA career that Smith believes has taken off again, Patrick clearly is proud of where he’s been, as well as confident about where he’s headed. “I look at it and say, ‘Wow,’ because this sport is now the fastest growing in the country,” Patrick said. “I’m still here and doing very well. I’m more of an all-around fighter now, not just a good Muay Thai fighter and kick boxer. My body’s still good. (UFC president) Dana (White) keeps telling me to beat somebody more accomplished. I just beat Brad Imes in 28 seconds (TKO, March 13). I busted him up and did a lot of things to him in 28 seconds. I don’t know what more I can do. I’m outweighed by a lot every time I fight, but I’m still willing and able to fight anybody. Tim Sylvia, Chuck Lidell, Anderson Silva……they’re terrible strikers. They can’t hit me.”

Smith has fought all over the world – Russia, Japan, Brazil and Canada – and across the United States, but never before in New England. “I’m looking forward to coming up there,” Smith added. “I don’t talk trash because anything can happen in the heavyweight division. I’ll be in good shape and will bring my best.”

Shaun George Video Diary Preview For July 8 Friday Night Fights

BROOKLYN – The initial installment of Shaun George’s Video Diary is now available on Youtube (see below). Shaun George will face Chris Henry on July 10 at The Arena in Philadelphia, PA in a ten round light-heavyweight bout that will be aired on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.

Brooklyn’s George, 18-2-2 (9 KO), opened eyes with a punishing ninth round TKO of former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd last May. As an amateur George had a record of 51-7, which was highlighted by two New York Golden Gloves titles and on National Golden Gloves championship.

Henry of Houston, TX is 23-2 (18 KO) and has held the NABF and NABA light-heavyweight titles. His only two losses have come in highly-competitive bouts with Yusaf Mack and Adrian Diaconu by decision. Henry has never been knocked down as a professional.

The fight will be the co-featured bout alongside Matt Godfrey vs. Shawn Hawk. The show will be promoted by Blaine Garner’s Shalyte Entertainment in association with Dibella Entertainment and CES Boxing.

The Onion Picker: Carmen Basilio and Boxing in the 1950s; Gary B. Youmans; Syracuse University Press; 2007 (Book Review)

Several years ago, I wrote a book on the contributions of the immigrant Irish families to the culture in upstate New York. One evening, after a presentation to a area historical society, a woman approached me and said, “You didn’t include enough about the Italians.” She proceeded to tell me about her family’s history. I mentioned to her that early in the book, I had noted that the stories of the Irish and Italian immigrants were closely related. Before I could finish, she said, “That’s just not enough,” and walked away. One of my friends, who has published several books, started laughing. “Write a history book,” he said, “and people will let you know how little you really know.”

Perhaps that experience has influenced the manner in which I want to review some of the best books on boxing, for this forum. There are few, if any, books on boxing history that are 100% accurate ….even the Ring Record Book has errors. Yet it takes remarkably little talent to focus on the negative. My aim in this series is to encourage people to read and enjoy some of the valuable books that help to document the history of the sport, and which offer insights on some of the most interesting boxers.

Gary Youmans’ book about the career of Carmen Basilio is a great place to start. The author, who grew up in Syracuse, NY, is a sports marketing consultant. He played basketball in college, and went on to coach at the high school level in Florida, and at the professional level in Canada. He has published two books on football history. It makes sense that someone with a love of sports’ history, coming from Syracuse, would write a biography of Carmen Basilio.

“The Onion Picker” has 15 chapters, each one a round in Carmen’s rise from a tough farm kid in rural, upstate New York, to the welterweight and middleweight champion of the world. The author includes information from the newspapers and boxing magazines of the day, as well as interviews with those closest to Carmen. Youmans covers both the yin and yang of boxing: there are the shadowy figures, intent upon profiting financially by controlling the titles, and the honest, hard-working people – like Carmen – who aren’t looking for any favors or unfair advantages. They just want to compete on a level playing field.

Boxing, of course, has had its share of corruption. The pages of this book show how the theft of the decision, and title, in his March 14, 1956 defense against Johnny Saxton outraged Basilio. It also provides interesting coverage of his most important fights, against tough Tony DeMarco and the great Sugar Ray Robinson.

A review in one boxing magazine noted that this book is incomplete, and leaves room for others on Basilio. I disagree with the “it’s just not enough” attitude. I do not think that any one book could possibly tell the complete story of a great boxing champion. As my son Darren said to me, a good biography involves the author’s interpretation of what is most important in the subject’s life, and there are as many impressions of Basilio as there are boxing fans who have watched his fights, especially from those who have had the opportunity to meet Carmen in person.

By no small coincidence, Carmen Basilio’s boxing career is a topic mentioned in my book on the Irish in upstate NY. As Youmans notes in his book, Carmen’s father worked on the railroad for a period of time. He was a boxing fan, who liked Jimmy Braddock. One of his friends on the railroad was my great uncle, who at times helped train Braddock and others, after his own career in the ring ended. My extended family has numerous photos of Carmen at their Sherburne home, throughout his career.

I’ll share a personal story here, in this book review. In 1975, the first annual “Southern Tier Boxing Tournament” was held at Broome County Community College in Binghamton. This was in part, due to differences between local trainers and some promoters in other areas, over “robberies” in the decisions at the regional Golden Gloves. The promoters brought in Carmen as a “guest referee,” although he did not end up as ref in any of the fights.

In the finals, I fought a tough kid, but I handled him with ease. I knocked him through the ropes once (Rubin’s advice on setting an opponent up worked!), and sent his mouthpiece three rows back another time. When it came time for the decision, we knew that something was up, because the referee was arguing “that’s not fair, you can’t do this.” But they did – the decision went to the other fellow – perhaps because his father was an influential businessman in Binghamton. My opponent was gracious: he told me in the ring that he knew I won, and offered me the first place trophy. But I had something more valuable.

Carmen Basilio walked up to the ring, and was shaking his head, saying, “No, no. This kid won the fight.” He knew what it meant to get ripped off. It was one of my proudest moments in the ring.

At the end of his 15-round book, Youmans includes a brief interview with Carmen. He asks why people loved watching him fight. “When people buy a fight ticket,” Basilio answered, “they’re paying to see blood and knockdowns. Every time I go into the ring, I expect to be busted up. It is as much a part of the business as the boxing gloves. There is no room in the ring for two fighters, a referee, and pity. It’s him or me.” That is just what you expect from Carmen Basilio, the welterweight and middleweight champion of the world. And this book delivers. I give it an A+.

“Trilogy” PPV Aug. 1 – Sobral-Mousasi

SOBRAL Prepares for Mousasi

SEAL BEACH, California (July 1, 2009) — Gegard Mousasi has declared his fight against Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Renato “Babalu” Sobral an all-out war. “Sobral is so tough. When he comes, he comes to fight,” says Mousasi, as he trains for one of the biggest challenges of his career. Babalu Sobral ranks in the top ten of light heavyweights and has been training since Mousasi was a newborn. Besides the ten years difference in age and experience, Mousasi will have to contend with Sobral’s explosiveness and dangerous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills in the ring.

Sobral, on the other hand, prepares for the power and athleticism that comes with Mousasi’s youth. Although Babalu is well aware of the dangers Mousasi presents, he fully intends on continuing his current winning streak. “On the ground,” Babalu contemplates his possible advantage over Mousasi, “…probably that’s where I can take advantage (of him). Whatever it takes.”

“It will be a good test for me,” asserts Mousasi. “With Sobral, I will try to fight (a) stand up game. If it goes to the ground, I will take top position and work him over with my ground and pound. Sobral will have to watch out for my elbows; I want to use them in this fight. If I end up on my back, I can defend myself and eventually we will stand back up again.”

Although he has other plans for the fight’s outcome, Babalu is ready for Mousasi to try to keep the fight on his feet and to adapt to whatever the fight may bring. Sobral (32-8), enters the bout as one of the division’s most compelling fighters, with five consecutive wins and notable victories over Jeremy Horn, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, “Shogun” Rua, Trevor Prangley, and Maurice Smith.

Babalu is always ready to fight, saying he is “on the top of the wave” right now “waiting to drop.” And although he won’t reveal it in interviews, he has some tricks up his sleeve for his upcoming bout with Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi, who made the majority of last year’s “Fighter of the Year” lists. But the seasoned Sobral is ready, bringing to the bout the same passion and ferocity he brings to all his fights, along with a tried and true game plan. “Whenever I see a space, I’m gonna push the fight,” Sobral states. “When he makes a mistake, then I’m going to finish.”
