Opening statement

“We’ve had SHOWTIME boxing for more than 20 years and ShoBox, our young up-and-coming boxing series, began in 2001. It was designed to give fighters valuable experience and valuable television exposure both at the same time to accelerate the popularity of their careers. That franchise has launched the career of more than 30 world champions. We couldn’t be happier with that franchise. ShoBox has really become the Kleenex of boxing defining what a young fighter is. We expect the Challenger series to be just that in the world of mixed martial arts.”

“The look and the feel of the Challenger series will be distinct and unique to itself. There will be less of the bells and the whistles that we bring to the big shows that would be a bit overkill in some of the venues that we’re going to be in. But there will be the same high quality standard we bring to every show.”

On the prospect of boxing’s Roy Jones Jr. ever fighting Nick Diaz:

“I get a Roy Jones call once a week, pitching me things. That would be a very, very long shot of ever happening on SHOWTIME. I think it’s an insult to the integrity of mixed martial arts to think Roy Jones, or any professional boxer, can just come in and fight Nick Diaz in a mixed martial arts context. In a boxing context, it’s completely different. Beyond that, it’s not the strategy that we’re employing. We’re looking to build the best mixed martial arts brand. I believe that we have the best professional boxing brand on television and I think our fights, month in and month out, prove that. I don’t see the need to combine the two at the moment. I wouldn’t want to go down that path just now.”

SCOTT COKER

Opening statement

“The difference between the Strikeforce Challenger series and the bigger Strikeforce events is that we’re looking for the next up-and-coming stars. The next Robbie Lawlers, the next Gina Caranos and the next Frank Shamrocks. And we’re going to find them on these Challenger series.”

On how he chooses the fights for the Challenger series:

“Picking our big fights we sit down with our matchmaker and throw ideas off each other. On the Challenger series it’s the same process as the bigger fights. We also get a lot of calls from the trainers of fighters and get recommendations on fighters.”

BILLY EVANGELISTA

“It’s going to be great—finally fighting in my hometown. My Dad is going to come down and be there for the first time at a fight with me. I’m just so excited.”

“This is a great opportunity for me. A lot of people want me to win, especially because I’m the local boy. There is a lot of pressure being undefeated. I just try to ignore the pressure.”

“I’m always trying looking to put on a great show. It’s going to be a great show. I’m going to have a lot of friends and family watching. It’s going to be a great fight for me and Mike.”

MIKE AINA

“I’m obviously very excited to be back on the main stage and on national TV and on SHOWTIME. There’s always a little bit of emotion when you fight in someone else’s hometown. It’s going to be a little tough. But once the cage closes it doesn’t matter. Once that’s first punch is thrown you just let the fight happen.”

On training again after his long layoff

“Yeah, I did take some time off. We had a baby daughter and I’m juggling a full-time job. Training for a fight there’s a lot expected of you. It’s a lot of wear and tear on not just your body but also your mind. My daughter is 1-year now and sleeping through the night so it’s getting a little bit easier.”

What adjustments do you face traveling from Hawaii to the mainland:

“It really is a challenge. Traveling is not my thing really. You have to just take it for what it is. Will it take away from my fighting? That remains to be seen. I’ll be training hard mentally and physically for this fight.”

“I’m looking forward to an all-out war with Billy. He’s undefeated. I’m expecting nothing less than a war. I think the fans will be happy with the outcome of the fight.”

What about the idea of fighting Nick Diaz again. Was that a motivating part of you signing on with Strikeforce?

“Oh, yeah. I’d love another shot at him (he lost a controversial split decision in their last fight). I mean, Strikeforce and SHOWTIME, you don’t really get any bigger than this. For us fighters this is our dream and what we fight so hard for all year. We’re on the main stage now and I’m just going to take it all in and enjoy every moment of it.”

SARAH KAUFMAN

“I think it’s great that Strikeforce is willing to put the women on the main televised card on SHOWTIME. I do hope that we steal the show and I think we’re going to put on a great fight. I was just fortunate enough to step in and be ready for this fight.”

Regarding her training after a layoff:

“I wouldn’t have taken this fight if I wasn’t able to showcase what I can do. I feel really good. Once I heard Kim (Couture) was out I talked to my coach and told him I really wanted this fight. I don’t feel over trained or have any injuries. This is a big step for my career. I think it’s going to be a real exciting fight. It’s not going to be an easy fight, for sure.”

MIESHA TATE

On approving the fight after Kim Couture dropped out:

“At first I was kind of surprised because it is a pretty big jump but the more I thought about it the more I thought this was a great situation for me to fight someone like Sarah Kaufman. She has an undefeated record and now I’m stepping in there with the opportunity to be the first one to beat her and I’m going to go for it. I’m hoping it’s the fight of the night.”

“I think the style matchup makes for a fascinating fight because I perhaps have strengths where she has weaknesses and vice versa. I think there’s a lot of potential for some good back and forth which I think will make for a really fun fight to watch.”

“I don’t really prepare differently for each opponent. This is MMA so anything can happen out there. I just go out there and I know what I’m going to do and I plan on dictating the fight. You have to be prepared for anything to happen. She’s hungry and I’m hungry. I went from a win-lose situation to a win-win situation fighting Sarah.”

“There is more out there than just Cyborg and Gina Carano. They’ve been getting all the attention. We’re going to show next Friday that we can be included with those two names.”

Undefeated Billy Evangelista took part in an open workout on Wednesday at Gold’s Gym in Fresno following a national media teleconference call in preparation for the May 15 showdown at the Save Mart Center.

Evangelista returns home to Fresno in the main event to face Mike Aina in the debut of Strikeforce Challengers, a new SHOWTIME series that serves as a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters.

Lavar Johnson, a local Fresno fighter like Evangelista, also took part in the open workout Wednesday. He faces off against Carl Seumanutafa of San Francisco, Calif., May 15, in a five-round heavyweight fight.

Members of the local Fresno media came out in full force to check out the Fresno-area fighters on Wednesday.

In a three-round bout at 160 pounds, local Fresno school teacher Ben Holscher meets Cody Cantebury in a non-televised undercard fight Friday.

Misha Tate of Olympia, Wash., brings a 6-1 record into the cage with her for her three-round fight against Sarah Kaufman.

Sarah Kaufman (8-0) of Victoria, Canada, puts her undefeated record on the line next Friday night against Miesha Tate.

American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank Unveils New Format for May 7 Bouts

The best boxing in the Bay Area has a new name: ‘American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank: The Next Chapter and returns on Thursday, May 7 for its eighth season at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

“The Next Chapter” has been added to American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank to reflect the new team concept.

AM&I Fight Night at the Tank will now consist of seven four-round bouts with at least one women’s bout. All fighters will be included in the ‘You Be The Judge’ contest; a way for fans to show their support of their favorite fighter of the night. The crowd will judge the bouts and choose their favorite boxer by round of applause. The winning fighter will receive the AMI Cup with an extra $1,000 bonus. The crowd will have a chance to win money of their own as $100 cash will be given away between every bout.

Members of each team will have opportunities to add to their pocketbooks with team bonuses. Both teams will be competing for bonuses of $2,100 ($300 per fighter). The teams will be scored on a point system with one point awarded per bout ending with the best of seven. If there is a knockout, “The Quickest Knockout Award” will garner that special fighter another $500.

AM&I Fight Night at the Tank will bring back a familiar face as Roy Englebrecht returns to AM&I Fight Night at the Tank as the event matchmaker. Roy Englebrecht is owner and founder of Roy Englebrecht Promotions, California’s third largest Boxing Promotions Company. In December of 2001 Oscar De La Hoya purchased Roy Englebrecht Promotions creating Golden Boy Promotions, with Roy serving as COO for the first three years. Full Report: Jamie Moore vs. Roman Dzuman

European light middleweight champion Jamie Moore made a successful first title defense to headline a tremendous bill by Frank Maloney Promotions at Crow Tree Leisure Centre in Sunderland, England on Saturday.

The action served as the lead in to Sky Box Office’s telecast of Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton.

Manchester area hero Moore expertly took apart seasoned Continental challenger Roman Dzuman with cold, calculated efficiency.

Dzuman was clattered from one end of the ring to the other in the first frame before Moore moved in for the kill with sickening body shots that canvassed the challenger before the bout was stopped for good in the second round.

Moore sees his record to 32-3 (23) and is closing in on a WBC title opportunity. Dzuman loses his second European title challenge and falls to 23-7-1 (10).

The chief support contest saw Danny Williams, 41-7 (31), retain his British heavyweight title with a split decision over John McDermott, 25-5 (16), in a rematch to their initial clash ten months previous.

Williams lost two points and McDermott lost one during a rough fight that went back and forth before Williams won on scores of 116-111, 116-111 and 113-115.

European super bantam ruler Rendall Munroe, 19-1 (8), won the Commonwealth title during a contentious 12 round scrap with Ghana hard man Isaac Nettey, 18-5 (11).

Munroe had to overcome the tenacious challenge of Nettey produced a fight that was closer than the wide scores of 120-109, 119-110 and 119-110 indicated.

Sam Webb, 14-1 (4), won a British light middle title eliminator by outhustling a more seasoned opponent, Thomas McDonagh, 34-2-3 (7).

Webb was the fresher man in the battle with lanky former English title challenger McDonagh and pulled out a 96-95 points win after ten rounds.

Lightweight Paul Holborn, 10-2-1 (0), made it past tricky upset artist Youseff Al Hamidi, 5-16-1 (1), after six rounds.

In a surprising upset, bomb throwing heavyweight slugger Larry Olubamiwo, 4-1 (4), was outpointed 59-57 by Norway based Russian Daniil Peretyatko, 16-21 (6), in a six rounder.

Olubamiwo had trouble getting a bead on the cagey Peretyatko and was outboxed as he looked for opportunities to land a big punch that never quite came.

2008 Olympic light heavyweight hero Tony Jeffries, 2-0 (2), punished German import Roy Meissner, 2-10 (2), until the one-sided affair was called off in the second round.

The occasion marked the first time Jeffries had fought in his hometown after winning the Bronze Medal in Beijing.

Danny Hughes, 6-0-1 (1), won a six round heavyweight slugfest against Howard Daley, 2-15-1 (1), by a score of 60-54.

Promising light middle Brian Rose, 12-0-1 (3), outpointed durable veteran Matt Scriven, 13-49 (1), by working behind a sharp jab over four rounds

Cruiserweight John-Lewis Dickinson, 3-0 (3), outpointed spoiler Nick Okoth, 8-22-5 (3), in a four rounder while his brother, super middleweight Travis Dickinson, 2-0 (1), made short work of Pawel Trebinski, 1-4-1 (0), finishing off the Pole in the first round.

EUROPEAN BOXING NEWS (5/6/2009)

May 2, Bremen, Germany:

WIBF and WBC female feather champ Ina Menzer beat US challenger Francheska Alcanter over ten one-sided rounds in the headliner of Universum´s show at Hall 7. All judges had it 100-90 and Alcanter landed as far as I could tell only with two scoring punches in the whole fight. At the same time she was strong and very fit and Menzer was careful, overly careful perhaps about getting involved and this made for a not very exciting fight.

WBA bantam king Anselmo Moreno retained the title after twelve fastpaced, hardfought rounds against Ukrainian Wladimir Sidorenko with a split decision. It was scored 115-113 on all cards with two for Moreno – American judge Glenn Feldman´s scoring was wrongly announced as 115-112. To this reporter the slick Panamanian southpaw was a clear winner even though Sidorenko made some rounds very close with his all-out agression. Trainer Michael Timm worked almost as hard as his fighter but Wladimir just couldn´t trap Moreno and get to work – he had his moments but it wasn´t enough.

Moreno could be defending the title in July in France against Frenchman Mayhar Monshipour who was on hand to negotiate the fight.

Cruiser Aleksander Alekseev outscored Max Alexander over ten on scores of 98-92 twice and 97-93.

correction: the Domenico Spada vs Sebastin Zbik fight for the WBC interim middleweight title goes ahead July 11 at the Nuerburgring Arena along with Felix Sturm and not as I wrongly had it.

PHILIP NDOU VS. LOVEMORE NDOU HEADLINES FIGHT CARD ON JULY 11 IN KEMPTON, SOUTH AFRICA; TELEVISED ON SUPERSPORT

Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves and Arthur Pelullo’s Banner Promotions will present a sensational fight card on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Emperors Palace, located at 64 Jones Street in Kempton Park, South Africa. Featured fights will be televised live on Supersport.

The main event, scheduled for 12 rounds, will match Philip “Time Bomb” Ndou, 32-3 with 31 knockouts, of Johannesburg, South Africa, against former IBF jr. welterweight world champion Lovemore “Black Panther” Ndou, 46-11-1 with 31 knockouts, a native of Messina, Transvaal, South Africa, based in Sydney, Australia. They are not related. The fight is an IBO welterweight elimination bout, with the winner to face Matthew Hatton for the IBO welterweight world title.

A former world title challenger at lightweight, Philip, now 32 years old, returned to the ring for the first time in almost five years on February 14 in St. Quentin, France, and TKO’d Rachid Drilzane in the fifth round.

Before his retirement, Philip was considered South Africa’s top fighter “Pound for Pound.” He was voted South Africa’s “2001 Boxer of the Year,” and his fight against Cassius Baloyi in November, 2001, was voted South Africa’s “2001 Fight of the Year.” He also represented South Africa in the 1996 Olympics.

Lovemore, now 37 years old, won the IBF jr. welterweight world title with an eleventh-round TKO against Naoufel Ben Rabah in February, 2007. He lost the title in his first defense by 12 round unanimous decision against Paulie Malignaggi in four months later in June. Lovemore lost a 12 round split decision in the rematch against Malignaggi in May, 2008.

In the co-featured bout, South African bantamweight champion Simpiwe Vetkeya, 20-1 with 12 knockouts, of Duncan City, South Africa, will face Eric Barcelona, 47-15-4 with 17 knockouts, of Valencia City, Philippines, for the vacant IBO bantamweight title.

Vetkeya, now 28 years old, won the South African title in February, 2005, and has made nine successful title defenses. He challenged Hozumi Hasegawa for the WBC bantamweight world title in May, 2007, but lost a 12 round unanimous decision.

Barcelona is the Philippine Boxing Federation bantamweight champion. Now 27 years old, he won the title in February, 2008, and has made seven successful title defenses. He has won four fights in a row since his last loss in August, 2008.

In a battle of South African prospects scheduled for 10 rounds, lefthanded Tommy “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen, 9-0 with 9 knockouts, will battle Jared “The Storm” Lovett, 8-0 with 8 knockouts, for the vacant IBO Youth light heavyweight title. Lovett was South Africa’s “2008 Prospect of the Year.”

2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, 4-0 with 4 knockouts, of Providence, Rhode Island, will be featured in a four-round bout against an opponent to be announced. Andrade is co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Art Pelullo’s Banner Promotions, and is considered by many to the top prospect from the 2008 U.S. Olympic team.

More exciting bouts will complete the card. All bouts subject to change without notice.

The first fight starts at 8:00 P.M. (local time)

The first fight televised live on Supersport starts at 10:00 P.M.
