Schmidt & Tribolet capture SNMMA Titles at “Extreme Beatdown”

SAN CARLOS, Arizona (April 11, 2009) — Former Arizona high school wrestler Jamie “The Headhunter” Schmidt (8-2-0) captured the first SNMMA featherweight title, submitting Yaotzin Meza (11-5-0) in the opening round, last night in the main event at Apache Gold Casino in San Carlos, Arizona.

Schmidt, now fighting out of Denver and representing N.E.S.T., went right to the ground and locked Meza, another former Arizona high school wrestler, into a bone-crunching arm bar that resulted in a tap-out at 1:59 of the first round.

Despite an 84–pound weight disadvantage, late replacement Beau Tribolet (2-1-0) won the first SNMMA super heavyweight (266-pounds+) title in the co-feature, using a rear naked choke to submit the 335-pound New Zealand-native Brice Ritani-Coe (2-1-0) at 4:02 of the opening round.

SNMMA links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNMMA’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate mixed-martial-arts in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.

“Jaime is a very good fighter,” SNMMA president Pat Packineau said. “He trained very hard for this fight. He’s a master technician who stuck to his game plan and dominated a very good opponent, Yaotzin Meza. We’re very pleased he won the SNMMA title and I’m looking for big things from him. Tribolet took the fight on only two days notice. He came in and put on a great show, proving that perseverance and staying in top shape can lead to an opportunity like this to win a world title.”

In a classic match-up between a striker, former 2-time world boxing champion Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (3-0-0), and karate kicker, Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson (7-3-0), Reid’s heavy hands prevailed in an exciting special female 112-pound catch-weight attraction fight. Reid remained unbeaten in MMA action by second-round technical knockout, after dropping the game Waterson for the sixth time via clean strikes, immediately followed by several well-placed punches on her fallen opponent.

MMA heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was a special guest at “Extreme Beatdown” to support his friend and Minnesota Martial Arts Academy workout partner, Chris Tuchscherer (17-1-0), the first and reigning SNMMA heavyweight champion. The former 2-time NCAA, Division II All-America wrestler, Tuchscherer, defeated previously unbeaten Jamie Klair (7-1-0) by first-round TKO in a non-title fight. Tuchscherer used a power drive to bring Klair to the mat and then unloaded a barrage of unanswered punches until the referee halted the action at 1:50.

NICK DIAZ BEATS THE SNOT OUT OF FRANK SHAMROCK AND THEN HELPS HIM UP

Nick Diaz is back and better than ever!

I believe I have just witnessed one of the classiest acts I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing in my time covering the sport of MMA. Coming from a guy I’ve seen act very childish and disrespectful in the past, it was all the more shocking to see.

Nick Diaz, over the course of two solid rounds he was winning when the fight ended, took apart Frank Shamrock quicker than Cung Le did in Frank’s last fight and made Frank look like Phil Baroni did after his fight with Frank. Shamrock, battered, bloody, and beaten, lie crumpled on the cage floor with just inside a minute left in the round, taking a tornado of punches to the head and body from Diaz. Shamrock looked as if his life in the sport was flashing before his eyes, as if he knew the end was near.

Then it happened. Something nobody probably expected and everybody should appreciate and recognize. Nick Diaz pulled Frank to his feet and told him to get up. Standing with a look of suspicion on his face and still in a bit of recovery mode, Shamrock was able to show the crowd he was OK, but he looked like he wanted to go right back to the ground and rest. It was amazing to me how Diaz ignored the ref trying to lay Frank down and made sure the man was on the feet to wave to the crowd and symbolize the end of all the hype and the lead up to this thing. Diaz explained later that his degree of respect for Frank is immense, and it showed in the post-win reaction there. He decided to forget about his own celebration mode and tend to making the crowd recognize Frank. I was really impressed by that and hope it represents a new and improved Nick Diaz both inside and outside the ring. Great fighters often have serious demons we forgive because they put on great shows. In his past, I think Diaz let those demons destroy him and run his life. Today he looks to have channeled them and focused them on the fighting game. Let’s hope it lasts.

In other action Scott Smith pulled off an impressive win over Benji Radach after a slugfest that saw both fighters get their bells rung repeatedly. Finally, while in a state of slow sleep-fighting, Smith connected with a right hand that ended the fight. Gilbert Melendez had a similar victorious one-punch finish against Rodrigo Damm for the interim Strikeforce lightweight title, and Brett Rogers pummeled “Abongo” Humphrey in a match of 2 unbeaten heavyweights that almost got stopped for hair pulling by Rogers. Cris “Cyborg” came in with weight issues she attributed to a “women’s issue” but still demolished tiny little Hitomi Akano in a women’s match at 145 pounds.

It was a great first card for Strikeforce, but the choice of main events did not provide for much of climactic ending. Aside from that great moment of respect that saved the performance, that fight was a mismatch. Now I want to see Cung Le vs. Diaz.

Ticky Donovan honoured

Fighters Inc recently organised a testimonial evening to honour a “Great” amongst the Karate fraternity. The Ticky Donovan Testimonial was a celebration of an incredible career after Ticky recently retired from the England’s head coach postion. The event was jam packed with Karateka wanting to honour Ticky and was attended by new coach Wayne Otto and by Hanshi Steve Arneil who were among the guest speakers on the night. European Open during Half Term

Such was the success of the first European Festival of Martial Arts in Disneyland that organisers Botel events and Fighters Inc have been able to secure Half Term in Feb 2010 as the dates for the second EFMA event.
