NEW YORK (April 2, 2009) — The exciting, stylistic mixed martial arts (MMA) match between top-ranked fighters “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (16-4) and Jake Shields (22-4-1) has been set for Saturday, June 6, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo., it was announced today by Strikeforce Founder and CEO Scott Coker. In addition, Coker confirmed the addition of a thrilling Strikeforce Championship fight between light heavyweight titlist “Babalu” Sobral and top-rated contender Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets for Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields”, priced from $30, go on sale on Monday, April 13, at 10 a.m. CT, at the Scottrade Center box office as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Lawler, a world top-10 middleweight, and Shields, ranked among the top-5 welterweights in the world, will face off at a catch weight of 182 pounds.

Sobral (32-7) will be making the first defense of his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship against vaunted striker and fellow Brazil native “Feijao” (7-1).

“It’s a great opportunity to fight another top-ranked fighter,” said the hard-hitting, 27-year-old Lawler, a former high school football star known for the stunning knockout power in his fists.

“Scott Coker really stepped up and I’m glad to be fighting for him and Strikeforce,” continued Lawler, who was one of many fighters acquired in Strikeforce’s asset purchase from ProElite, Inc., earlier this year. “We were all unsure of where our next fight would be (referring to the former EliteXC stable of fighters), so we’re glad someone with his experience stepped in. He has been good to us.”

A seven-time veteran of UFC action, Lawler attracted his biggest audience to date during his live CBS Television Network broadcast rematch with Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith, whom Lawler stopped with an onslaught of kicks and punches in the second round of their headlining matchup in Stockton, Calif., on July 26, 2008.

Born in San Diego, Calif., as an adolescent, Lawler relocated with his family to Bettendorf, Iowa, where at the age of 16 he became a protégé of MMA legend Pat Miletich. Two years ago, Lawler joined the fight squad captained by former Miletich teammate and all-time great Matt Hughes.

The 30 year-old Shields, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, is looking to notch his 12th consecutive victory. In his last start, he submitted the explosive Paul Daley with an armbar in the second round of their live CBS broadcast match in Sunrise, Fla., on October 4, 2008.

“It’s a fight that makes sense,” said Shields of his upcoming challenge. “We’re both already known to the SHOWTIME viewers. He’s a top middleweight and I’m a top-ranked welterweight. It makes me want to train really hard. I know I’ve got to be ready because, if I’m not, he’s going to kick me in the head or punch me and knock me out. I’m super-excited to come in at my best.”

Shields, who began wrestling at the age of nine, acknowledged that his advantage in the match with Lawler lies on the canvas.

“My grappling’s better than his striking. I’ve been working on my striking a lot, though,” said Shields, “and I think it’s a lot better than some people give me credit for. I’m not going to say I’m a better striker than Lawler because that would be stupid. Lawler is one of the better strikers out there.”

Also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, the 33-year-old Sobral was crowned the first-ever Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion after landing an elbow strike that opened a deep cut around the eye of Bobby Southworth in the first round of their bout at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 21, 2008. Southworth survived the round, but was deemed unable to continue the fight by the ringside physician before the start of the second round.

Over the course of 39 career starts, Sobral has faced and defeated some of the sport’s best competitors including legendary K-1 and UFC champion Maurice Smith, Chael Sonnen, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, whom he submitted with a choke in his last appearance on January 24, of this year.

On Sept. 6, 2003, Sobral knocked off three top-tier rivals—Jeremy Horn, Mauricio “Ninja” Rua, and Trevor Prangley—during a single-elimination tournament.

Since relocating to Orange County, Calif., Sobral has taken the opportunity to elevate his striking skills, to couple with his mastery of submissions, by taking on former world championship boxing contender Justin Fortune as a trainer.

Referred to simply as “Feijao” by MMA fans, Sobral’s opponent has been on fire of late, stopping all of his last three opponents inside the first round. Only the last of these, Travis Galbraith, whom Feijao faced on July 26, 2008, survived the three-minute mark against the Brazilian sensation.

Like Sobral, the 28-year-old Feijao brings to the cage fearsome submission capabilities honed on his native soil. Through his Muay Thai kickboxing training, he also has developed a dangerous kicking and punching arsenal that has helped facilitate his current win streak.

Doors at the Scottrade Center will open for Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields” at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 6. The first non-televised preliminary bout will begin at 7 p.m.

The National Wresting Hall of Fame & Museum’s inaugural class of Outstanding Americans, inducted in 1992, included a wide variety of backgrounds. Two presidents; an astronaut; a general; a legendary actor; and one of the great writers of the 20th century were among a group of 10 who, at some point in their lives, were influenced by the sport of wrestling.

Since 1992, the NWHOF has continued to honor a diverse group of individuals.

Kevin Short adds to that diversity, as an African-American and an opera singer. In 2008, the NWHOF highlighted 50 years of African-American contributions to the sport of amateur wrestling. Although Short did not pursue a collegiate wrestling career, the Washington, D.C., native took some of what he learned on a wrestling mat into a career that has been every bit as competitive.

The son of a successful football coach in Maryland, Short played football until his freshman year.

“I was always pretty small, smaller than just about everybody on the field,” said Short, who was inducted into the NWHOF in 2004. “I thought I’d see what it was like competing against guys my own size. I weighed 98 pounds in the 9th grade.”

A quick learner, Short was a three-time district champion for Lackey High School. He attended Morgan State University where, originally, he was going to pursue wrestling and music. But his calling came in music and wrestling soon took a backseat.

“In high school you can pretty much do everything,” Short said. “That’s not the case in college. I once wrestled a match and went directly from a singlet to makeup and wardrobe for a musical. I played saxophone, was in a jazz band playing bass guitar and was also in theater, plus I was wrestling.

“It’s not that easy in college.”

The musical influence perhaps came from his mother’s side of the family which includes a number of world-class musicians. Many of them currently perform with successful bands in the D.C. area.

For Short, a life-changing experience occurred during his second year at Morgan State.

“I was just checking out some stuff in the music department, wanting to join the choir,” he said. “The instructor I talked with asked me to sing him a song. When I was done, he said I could make a living singing. I met with a few others and all of a sudden they were talking about a full-ride scholarship in music.

“Being able to make a living as a singer hadn’t really occurred to me.”

Eventually, Short ended up at the prestigious Julliard School of Music, where he graduated in 1989. Two years later he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1991. His career also includes performances at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy and Lincoln Centers, plus venues around the world.

In 1998, he was selected to perform at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

The 48-year old, now residing in Switzerland, is currently performing in Sarasota, Fla., with the Sarasota Opera. From March 7-27, Short, a bass-baritone, is part of the cast of Verdi’s Don Carlos.

“I’ve been very fortunate,” he admits. “I’ve been able to do things I never imagined. I didn’t really start until I was in my 20s. It was all fresh and new to me. When I got to Julliard I was with a lot of formally-trained students who’d been at it for a number of years. Like I said, I’ve been very fortunate.”

The 1960s produced some of the most racially-charged and turbulent times the United States has ever experienced.

“My mother and father both have multiple degrees,” Short said. “My father was the first black principal in Maryland and became a very successful football coach. He won a lot of games and that opened some doors. He was tough.

“The thing about my family is that I never heard that I couldn’t do something growing up. I’m sure there were some issues at the time, but our family never talked about racial issues. It was never ‘black-this’ or ‘black-that.’”

Opera, much more popular in European communities, hasn’t always been African-American friendly in the United States.

“Let’s just say I don’t usually play the love interest,” Short said. “There are still companies out there who wouldn’t consider hiring an African-American. It’s very difficult in this business.”

On April 17, Short will perform a benefit concert at the OSU Seretean Concert Hall in Stillwater. Proceeds from the concert benefit the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum’s Educational Outreach Program and the current exhibit “Glory Beyond the Sport: Wrestling and the Military.”

Shumenov takes on another former world champion May 9 vs. Berrio in Kazakhstan

LAS VEGAS (April 1, 2009) – Two of the most exciting fighters in boxing will battle May 9th when world-rated light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov takes on former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio for the vacant IBA light heavyweight championships, as well as Shumenov’s WBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council titles, outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan.

Shumenov-Berrio will be the 12-round main event on a card presented by KZ Event Productions, Inc., which is owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, and based in Las Vegas.

2004 Kazakhstan Olympian sensation Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), the 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, who also holds the PABA light heavyweight belt, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His most notable win was a one-sided victory by 12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) last August in Kazakhstan.

Beibut’s last action was an impressive performance in Washington last December against former world title challenger Epifanio “Diamente” Mendoza (28-6-1), who was coming off a controversial loss to former world champion Jeff Lacy, easily winning on points by scores of 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93.

“All of us involved with KZ Event Productions are really looking forward to returning home to fight another world champion, Alejandro Berrio,” Beibut said. “I’ve really enjoyed being on the promotional side but, as we get closer to a fight, I’ll concentrate on training and my brother, Chingis, will handle all of the operations.“I’ve put myself on the fast track to fight the top light heavyweights in the world — (Roy) Jones, (Glenn) Johnson and (Clinton) Woods, etc. We offered to fight several of these guys but they all turned us down. I want to promote and fight in the United States after the May 9 show. Maybe we can get one of the major networks involved so one of the top light heavyweights will finally agree to fight me. All I am looking for is to fight the very best and to be judged on my ability, not by the number of pro fights I’ve had so far. Look at whom I’ve beaten, not just the number. After Berrio, I’ll be willing to fight anybody in the world. Line them up and I’ll knock them all down.”

Bolivian knockout artist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs), fighting out of Colombia, has been the distance only once in 33 pro fights, knocking out 27 of 28 victims, stopped in all five of his losses.

Berrio’s resume includes two victories against Robert Stiegltiz, in 2007 for the IBF super middleweight title, Syd Vanderpool and Yusaf Mack. Alejandro lost his IBF belt in 2007 to present holder Lucian Bute.

“Berrio isn’t coming to Kazakhstan just for a payday,” Shumenov noted. “He’s a very dangerous fighter but I am, too. They’ll be fireworks May 9, not just to celebrate my homecoming, but in the ring with two great warriors. Berrio has fought some of the best super middleweights in the world and now he’s moving up to fight me. I’m learning every time out and improving with each fight. I can’t wait for May 9th.”

The newest member of KZ Event Productions’ stable, unbeaten Uzbekistan light heavyweight prospect Gayratjon Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), 4-time Uzbekistan national amateur champion, is scheduled to make his KZ debut on the May 9 card against an opponent to be determined.

Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard extends target practice tonight in Maryland

MANCHESTER, Conn. (April 2, 2009) – Unbeaten in 16 pro fights, 22-year-old Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard, the reigning WBC Youth and USNBC featherweight champion, is spreading his wings and expanding his base starting tonight (Thursday, April 2).

Remillard (16-0, 8 KOs), representing Manchester, Connecticut, traveled outside of New England to fight for the first time as a pro for this evening’s 8-round bout against Jesus Perez at Michael’s Eight Avenue in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Last year, Remillard won all five of his fights, capturing the WBC Youth and USNBC featherweight title belts in the process, as well as being named the NABF and Connecticut Fighter of the Year.

“I’m happy to be fighting in the ring for the first time this year and I plan on getting off to a good start,” Remillard said. “I’m not a club fighter anymore and I’m trying to prove myself by traveling around. The toughest competition is on the West Coast and I’ll be moving around a lot to fight this year. Right now, though, I have to fight a tough guy who is coming to fight. This is a step in the right direction. The Baltimore area is out of New England, where I’ve had all of my pro fights to this point.”

The multi-tattooed Remillard is coming off of arguably his most impressive win by 6-round decision against 3-time world champion (34-9-2) Maurico Pastrana last November. “Sharp Shooter” can box or crack, pending the opponent. “It depends on what mood I’m in and what my opponent brings,” Remillard explained his style. “I’m a boxer-puncher. I love to mix it up but people are surprised to see how well I box, too. I can scrap, box, do it all and I’m going to prove that nationally by moving around for fights. Pastrana had lost his last two to world champions; I moved into another league beating him. I boxed very well and really used my jab effectively I stayed calm and did what I was trained to do for that fight.”

WBC No. 23 rated Remillard, also ranked No. 4 by the USBA and NABF, fully understands the opportunities ahead of him. “The featherweight division is one of the most loaded and deep in boxing,” Matt concluded. “Anywhere from 122 (pounds) to 135 is action packed. A lot of fighters are moving up or down to win world titles and I feel that I’ll be able to do that, too.”

BROKEN LEG FORCES THOMSON OUT OF STRIKEFORCE TITLE DEFENSE

New York (April 1, 2009) – A broken left leg sustained during a sparring session early Wednesday, has forced Strikeforce World Lightweight (155-pound limit) Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (14-2) at Strikeforce’s “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, April 11.

Strikeforce is searching for a replacement fighter to face the top-ranked Melendez in the live SHOWTIME televised event.

“I was sparring hard and I broke my leg, above my ankle, during an exchange,” said the 30-year-old Thomson, who was trading blows with fellow Strikeforce competitor Billy Evangelista when the injury occurred. Thomson is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday and is expected to be out of action for two to three months.

“I’m very upset. All the hard work was done and it was time to fight,” said the injured champ. “I was looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans. All I can say is that I’ll be back when I get healthy.”

Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Diaz” will air live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) on Saturday, April 11.
