O’Donnell takes inspiration from Froch ahead of Watson fight

John O’Donnell says he’s taking inspiration from WBC Super Middleweight kingpin Carl Froch ahead of his Commonwealth title challenge in London next month. O’Donnell takes on Craig Watson at the York Hall for his Commonwealth Welterweight title on a Hennessy Sports show which is being screened live on ITV4 on April 11th.

Froch of course has a massive night of his own to look forward to next month as he crosses the Atlantic to put his WBC title on the line against Jermain Taylor in the first defence. With both men trained by Robert McCracken, O’Donnell is hoping that he can go on to emulate Froch’s achievements starting with ripping the Commonwealth title away from Watson.

“Carl did things the traditional way by winning the British and Commonwealth titles and I’d like to do the same,” said O’Donnell. “I see Carl day in, day out in the gym and he’s an inspiration to me.

“He’s a world class fighter with world class ability but he still works harder than any other fighter I know and he’s a great role model for young fighters like myself coming through. He just wants to prove that he’s the best out there and he’s shown that by going over to fight Jermain Taylor in the U.S.

“I can’t think of too many other fighters that would take a massive fight like that for their first defence but that’s Carl’s mentality. When you’re rubbing shoulders with guys like that in the gym it brings you on because you get to see exactly what it takes to reach the top.”

O’Donnell believes that a victory over Watson will go some way to propelling him towards the top of the British and European welterweight ratings. “I’ve a lot of respect for Watson because he’s a tricky southpaw and I think he’s underrated but I’m confident I can do a job on him. Training’s going perfectly and I’m really stepping up my sparring now this week so by fight night I should be in the best shape of my life.”

O’Donnell’s Commonwealth title bid headlines a fantastic line-up of championship boxing at the legendary York Hall in Bethnal Green. 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada plans to upset No. 1 rated Alexander Povetkin April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany

PROVIDENCE (March 27, 2009) – 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada held an open media workout today at his ”Big Six Academy” in Providence before he departs Sunday for Germany to fight Alexander Povetkin, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and the IBF’s No. 1 contender, April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Estrada (15-1, 3 KOs) and Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs) nearly fought several times as amateurs but it never materialized, due to their contrasting schedules, until now as professionals. Povetkin, who has a mandated title shot this fall against IBF heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, signed to fight Estrada because, according to reports from his camp, he wants a test not a tune-up.

“Training has gone well and my body is good,” Estrada said today. “I’m going over there to whoop his butt. He’s going to be out of his league. He’s not used to fighting somebody like me. This isn’t going to be cute; it’s going to be a real fight. The only real fight he’s been in was against Eddie Chambers (WDEC12). I thought he (Povetkin) lost but they gave it to him. He’d throw five slaps but only two would be what I call clean. I’m a lot more aggressive and mean than Eddie Chambers.”

Providence-native Estrada was one of the most highly decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition. He was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row.

High School Senior Defeats Challenges and Beats All Odds To Become Successful Wrestler and Model Citizen

TDR’s March HS Wrestler of the Month for March- Christian Schuler of Arkansas

Des Moines, IA- March 26, 2009- Much like the story of David and Goliath, Christian Schuler took on some giant challenges, emerging the victor. The 18 year old, 145 lb. Bentonville, Arkansas high school senior achieved second place in State Finals during his junior year, with less than three years wrestling experience, and with a series of physical setbacks. Suffering a severe hearing loss and diagnosed with ADHD, his parents, coaches, and teachers credit wrestling for much of the incredible improvement and success Christian has attained.

On the mat, Christian wrestled nearly his entire Junior year on an undiagnosed torn ACL. Finally diagnosed, and only one week before State Finals, doctors allowed him to continue. During the second round of competition, the ACL severed completely, and despite pain doctors described as ” off the charts”, Christian finished the match to win, and went on to the finals where he took second in the state. Christian also finished second in the Diamond Missouri Tournament, with his only loss coming at the hands of a national runner-up.

Soon after, Christian suffered an additional injury during the Mudville Duals in Oklahoma that required arthroscopic surgery. Again, he would not quit. As quickly after surgery as doctors would allow, he wrestled in the Fayettville Classic where based on an Officials call, he was forced to forfeit due to injury and lost his starting slot for the State Finals in his senior year. Despite sitting out the finals, and based on his undeniable drive and determination, college coaches continued to follow Christian’s progression both athletically and academically. Christian’s hard work and sacrifice paid off as he was recruited to go on to college and wrestle for Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Off the mat, although directly related to wrestling, Christian contributed greatly to wrestling becoming a sanctioned high school sport in Arkansas. Christian recalls the times prior to wrestling, and as a football player, when members of the wrestling club were not allowed in the weight room due to wrestling being unsanctioned. Carrying over the incredible strength he built in the weight room as a football player to wrestling, he brought his might to organize and influence as well. He was contacted by Greg Hatcher, one of the key people accredited for the state becoming sanctioned, and was asked to address the Arkansas Activities Association as an ambassador and on behalf of wrestling, He also engaged in extensive fund raising activities to support the drive to officially recognize wrestling in the state.

Christian is a dedicated member of his church, where he serves as an Assistant to the Priest and participates in several church youth groups, including at the national level. Additionally, he volunteers his time to coach a youth wrestling club, where he is dearly loved and valued.

Coach Bill Desler lead Christian’s team, the Bentonville High School Tigers, to their first sanctioned championship this season, as well as the two prior years when the states teams met in unsanctioned tournaments. TakeDown Radio was present and reported from this years first sanctioned State Championship and witnessed first hand the coaching that contributed so greatly to his progress. Christian is really part of a trilogy of success, that being personal, team, and state. It’s what’s called a winning combination.

Another thing that’s certain. Knock Christian Schuler down, he gets up. Repeat the process as many times as you like, the result will come up the same.

Troy Nickerson- Cornell Universities 2009 NCAA Champion and EIWA Wrestler of the Year at 125 pounds

Three time All-American Troy Nickerson won the 2009 NCAA championship at 125 pounds last Saturday night with a 2-1 tie breaker win over Paul Donahoe of Edinboro. Nickerson previously placed third and second in 2007 and 2006 respectively. The Big Red finished in fifth place as a team. He’s also a really good broadcaster. We were pleased to have Troy’s team mate Adam Frey join our team in St. Louis, Mo.

Darrian Caldwell- a junior from Rahway, N.J., won NC State’s fifth individual national championship in wrestling Saturday night in St. Louis, with a dramatic upset of No. 1 seeded Brent Metcalf of Iowa. He was also named the NCAA Championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, giving him the claim to the title as America’ top amateur wrestler.

He will spend the year away from NCAA competition by participating in open and international tournaments, which will help him prepare for the 2012 Olympics in London. Caldwell would also like to give football another try. That’s the reason he considered leaving NC State last spring to transfer to his hometown Rutgers. He did spend some time working out with the NC State football team as a walk-on, and would like to give it another try.

How important was Former Clemson national champion Noel Loban to Caldwell’s success?
Loban, who went unbeaten in dual matches for three years for the Tigers, won the national championship at 190 pounds in 1980, was named Clemson’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year for 1980, and later was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame.

Iowa Head Coach Tom Brands joins us to discuss the season. The Margin of victory was the closest since 1999 as the Hawkeye Wrestlers repeat and earn the 2009 NCAA Championship, their 22nd.
2009 Big Ten winter Academic all-Conference team was greatly enhanced by Hawkeye wrestlers. The nine Hawkeye wrestlers break the previous school record of seven honorees. They are: Jay Borschel, Nick Kolegraff, J.J. Krustinger, Dan LeClere

RING OF FIRE 34: JUDGMENT DAY!!. The 13 bout MMA event will take place on Saturday, April 11th,2009 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

MAIN EVENT:

In the main event bout of the evening, UFC veteran Alvin KID Robinson returns to Colorado for the first time in two years.

A four time UFC veteran, Robinson is known as one of the slickest ground fighters in the sport. His biggest career victory came when he defeated Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Robinson holds the rank of Black Belt under the legendary Royce Gracie and is also a former All American wrestler. He won and defended the ROF Light Weight Championship three times. Robinson was sidelined during training for ROF 33, but is now injury free and ready to get back in the cage.

“On April 11th I make my return to 145lbs division. The 145lbs division is stacked and I can’t wait to fight the best.”

“Its honor to be fighting on Ring of Fire again, the show that started my career. I also can’t wait to fight in front of my hometown crowd here in Colorado. Robinson’s opponent, Anthony Morrison was raised in the rough streets of Philadelphia, PA. Morrison has literally fought for a better way of life. He is a powerful fighter that started his career training out of his grandmother’s basement, literally. Morrison has been training with Team Combat for the past year (the camp that brought up Amir Sadollah) to improve his game. Anthony is moving down from 155lbs to 145lbs. He feels at that weight, he will be a handful for any opponent.

“Alvin is tough opponent and I’m stepping into his back yard for this fight… I like being the underdog and I think the pressure is on him. This fight means a lot to me and I have faced tough opponents like Alvin before. I am going to prove to myself and everyone that I belong here. I dont think Alvin will want to stand with me so I’m obviously gonna try keep him where he is not comfortable. If it stays on the feet I will KO him. If it goes to the ground Im looking to pound him out. I am very excited to fight with Ring Of Fire! FEATURE BOUTS:
In the main feature bout of the evening UFC veteran BIG Mike Nickels returns to the cage.

Nickels is a BJJ stylist with a 6-2 record and was featured on season 3 of Spike TV’s Ultimate Fighter. BIG Mike was last seen in action at ROF 32, where he displayed text book technique in finishing Serbian boxer Vladimir Vuckovic early in the first round.

At ROF 34, Nickels will face the top up and coming light heavyweight in the region, James Funny. Funny has a very impressive 10-2 MMA record. He is known for both his KO power as well as brute strength on the mat. Funny is lookin for a win over the UFC vet to launch his career.

The undercard is stacked as UFC vet Luke LIL HULK Caudillo returns to action against Army Combatives instructor Josh Arocho. The 145 lb Young Guns belt will be on the line as Tyler THUNDER Toner takes on the 4-2 Dee Jay Fuentes of Matt Hughes HIT Squad camp. Fabian The FREAK Acuna makes his long awaited return as he squares up against K-1 and Contender Asia star James Martinez.. Undefeated Heavyweight and Golden Gloves Champion Brendan Schaub looks to go 5-0, but standing in his way is Montengro MMA Champion Bojan Spalevic. In a battle of brawlers fan favorite Kenneth Seegrist will clash with Ed Banks to open the main card portion of the evening.

There will be six preliminary matches starting at 6:30, highlighted by Cody Frederickson of Jacksons MMA taking on Easton BJJ’s Chandler Holderness. The remaing bouts feature some of the most promising young fighters on the circuit.
